Well that's a welcome relief. We've hit the fabled 40 points, Tosun is an all terrain weatherproof beast and some luck finally went our way with decisions today. Vital to be in a secure position before the visit of Citeh. Hopefully we can use the rest of the season to build the mental strength and cohesion of the team, rather than down tools and start visualising sunbathing already.

Not the case of luck but at last picking a winning Team without change. Still want him gone (I like Alardyce and wanted him because we needed his particular talent but he has proved up to now he is not the long term solution) but I said at the beginning the bloke was not the neanderthal some would have us believe, he embraces modern methods one of which is the Sports Psychologist and that does seem to have worked this week.

{Ed025's Note - except on bolasie DFS..

2.) 17 Mar 2018 21:33:45
The club has had a sports psychologist for years and that hasn't made a difference to our away form. Allardyce was supposed to bring one in but didn't.
Managers train and breed a winning mentality into players or go out and sign players with winning mentalities.
Expecting a sports psychologist to do the work for you is not revolutionary or forward thinking.
Relying on psychologists and stats will save you from relegation, building a team and galvanizing team spirit will win you a league or trophy.

3.) 17 Mar 2018 22:10:35
Smit, correct.

4.) 17 Mar 2018 23:24:02
Ducks sports psychologist have been going for 100 years. This has nothing to do with tactics, buying and selling players, training techniques, man management, physical fitness or style of play.

If I had to run around for 90 minutes watching the ball fly over my head then I'd want to have a chat with one.

I don't think anyone said he was a Neanderthal just that his style of football was crap.

5.) 17 Mar 2018 18:18:07
Yeh Ed Bolasie was poor and so was Tom.

{Ed025's Note - they were GB but i thought keane had his best game for us which is a plus mate..

6.) 17 Mar 2018 19:54:17
Ed025. Give you that one.

Quite happy with Mangala as he was a top defender at Porto, just had a poor run of injuries and form at Man City. At least he's left footed which is essentially lacking in our squad.

Lookman gone on loan to RB Leipzig. Give me strength, is he ever going to get to play for us?!

What els did you expect from SAM.

2.) 31 Jan 2018 21:52:30
I don't understand what the problem is, he's not ready, it's not just Sam who didn't play him, when he has played most of the time he's a 2 minute wonder then none exsistant, give him some football and hope he comes back with something to prove.

If part of the problem this window in getting signings in is freeing up places in the squad, and with Garbutt apparently being registered this window, do you happen to know Ed if players can be deregistered? I was wondering if after poor McCarthys horrific injury which will see him out for quite some time, and I don't mean to sound heartless, but can he now be deregistered before the window shuts to make space for a replacement, or is it set in stone once declared for the rest of the season?

{Ed002's Note - Yes they can be removed but that is not stopping anything happening.}87

I still have faith that we'll sign at least one more player in this window, a defender hopefully, but I've always believed that a big part of a club in our particular circumstances (mid table, not in any cup competitions, not as attractive a lure as the capital blah blah blah) has to approach to the merry go round of the transfer window by patiently waiting for other clubs to do deals first. For example, several clubs are after a LB, some for an improvement on what they have, whereas we barely have one at all, even if you sewed Garbutt, an injured Baines and Cuco Martina together, so suddenly a player who has had to make way or face competition might suddenly be tempted by a move and might do a job for us. Certainly better than the Frankensteins Left back option we have. A possibility may emerge where a quality player we may at one point may have considered to be beyond our reach is suddenly in a position to at least be willing to listen to an offer. I wonder how a player like Juan Mata, who i believe would be good for us, now feels after becoming third choice behind Sanchez and Lingard? Doubt he'd come, but its just an example of a possibility that perhaps didn't exist before another club went about it's business.

OnlyHaveEyesFoooorBluuueeee

{Ed002's Note - I would put aside thouts of Mata moving to Everton.}

1.) 27 Jan 2018 13:19:53
Yes sorry ed002 it wasn't the best example to offer, but before you file me away in your catalogue of eejits, I did say "I doubt he'd come"! :)

{Ed002's Note - if you are going to fantasise about players who won’t be joining, why mata? How about Neymar?}

2.) 27 Jan 2018 13:37:06
Never heard of him. He play for Hartlepool? Prefer Spiderman. :)

3.) 27 Jan 2018 19:24:43
Wow Ed002 what have you heard, do we really have a chance of getting Neymar?

At the very least, Blue79 Gilfi and Rooney both got contenders for goal of the season in Europe and PL. But let's not get too carried away with all the Martinez praise, the man had one tactic and got found out by almost every team in the league. Do miss his positivity though. Some of that would be phenomenal.

I dunno, we are now looking pretty light on wingers. With Theo's injury record and Bolasie not up to speed, we only really have Vlasic for cover, unless Sam wants to play square pegs in winger shaped holes. Surely one more will come in after so many outgoings.

So many to choose from, although strangely not from recently. i'd go for Jelavic scoring against Citeh after a lengthy goal drought, when the ball was layed off to him in the box, the whole good is on faithful stood up and shouted "Shoot! ", he bundled it towards goal, despite kicking his own feet and it went in. Everyone went berserk, Jelivic ran around the pitch swinging his shirt like a nutter, like Niasse probably did with his key when he was finally given a locker. I'd also go for Saha smashing 5 past Blackpool. He was immense, but sadly never again after that, really.

You make some great points coyb and the way I see it, we are sort of an exception to the rule. Allardyce was brought in on his rep as a relegation dodger, but more than likely with the full intention of replacing him and rebuilding at the end of the season. With the manager merry go round at the other clubs at the bottom, the pattern I see is simply old school management. Hodgeson, Moyes, Hughes and even Pardew are old school disciplinarians, who insist on hard work and a tough love approach, which conforms nicely with the need to 'steady the ship' approach required to stave off relegation. However, I think this only suits a survival mentality and is not the answer to club progression in the modern game. At the other end of the spectrum, in the top 6, you have your Morinho's, Conte's, Klopp's and Wengers (sounds like a terribly whiny law firm) who are all successful but very emotional. Each has had thier flip outs in the media, or fallen out with players, most of whom are very young millionaires. The level of ego they must deal with is a gulf away from the plucky underdog mentalities of the next 14 and so a different set of rules for success. Old school just can't keep up with the pace of a top 6 club, as Moyes discovered. That's also why I think a top manager like Conte would struggle with a club like Crystal Palace, as its almost a different world. I think this ties into your thoughts on how the wage bills affect the game in general. Until this gulf is lessoned by fairer financial rules in the PL, the top 6 (and staying there) may as well be a different universe.

Pickford has bags of skill and potential. He's still quite raw though, and needs time to develop. He's still very young for a keeper and can only get better. Shame he didn't come off his line for the goal, but he'll learn from that and let's face it, he was confused by attacking Choupo-Moating's low flying balls. If you can't stop a goal, at least a smack in the opposition nads takes the edge off!
