It's misleading to purely point at the back four or three plus wingbacks, depending on the team setup, and the striker in isolation for improvement/ replacement.
Granted each needs to know their role but football has changed and you only have to look at Man City, Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea for the blue print for success.
All four top sides attack and defend en masses with players supporting each other and compacting all areas of the pitch.
In contrast we tend to play, generallyi in three distinct areas with only a semblance of joined up thinking.
The real issue lies in the midfield which is weak and disconnected offering little protection for the back line and very little support for the usually the sole
striker.
Until this changes we will at best blow hot and cold in terms of performances.
The coaching staff need to address basic issues with certain players to eliminate silly mistakes that lead to conceding goals and Marco, whilst calling for consistency, needs to identify and address the root causes for our inconsistent performances. Not really that difficult because the majority of posters and Ed's continually point them out.
One thing is certain we cannot afford to carry four or five under performers and expect to turn in winning stylish performances.

Brilliant post fancy.

Good post fancy. Remember Everton of early 80's under Kendall and doubling up in the tackle, it started in midfield, one guy going in with the other immediately ready behind. The only one to come near since was Moyes but never really had the depth. What we see now is sometimes akin to junior football. Go to close the man then inexplicably stop or make a tackle and not follow through (after the ball) . Deeply frustrating at the moment. What I want to see today is a sign that Silva is not as obstinate as Martinez or arrogant as Koeman, signs that yes he is flexible and man mark at times wingers showing they can cover when the fullback makes a run. All basic stuff.

Can't argue with any of that FS. I'm sure Silva and co are aware of the problems, and if anything it just goes to highlight the mess left behind by previous managers and the monumental task that lays ahead. It won't and can't be fixed overnight.

13 Jan 2019 10:02:53
Keep referring to the mess left behind. So let's look. For a first season Manager/ Coach we are currently in a worse position than our last three Managers at this stage! Closer to 18th points wise than 6th. Obstinately pursues zonal marking when for this group of players even the most ardent advocate can see it doesn't work. Has his favourites (to be fair most do, but even so) , just one name 'Walcot' that stands out. As I have mentioned before at the game I normally do not shout criticism or voice out loud, however against Leicester I said to my son and Grandson after yet another error, 'we need a RW' around me others (young and old) , agreed in various forms. Not a Manager or coach but surely if something is glaringly obvious to thousands, how come not the coach.

If you seriously don't believe Silva inherited a mess when he took over DFS you need more than your eyes testing. I/ others keep saying that he is acutely aware of what's needed but it will take some time to achieve. So he's been here 6 months and it's been up and down at times, so what? What did you think would happen? He'd wave his magic fairy wand and we'd have all the problems taken care of just like that? There IS NO instant fix. What part of that don't you get?

I actually think that Tosun is a good striker that hasn't had a truly good run in the first team since Silva has taken charge. We could end up selling him and getting someone not as good. Also if a Turkish club comes in for him, you can bet your bottom dollar that it'll be a loan request that will eventually go pair shape.

I say keep him and do business in the summer. And play the guy, he will score, just give him time.

I agree with you, need the bloke, constantly has to come looking for the ball, so far.

Agree with both of you. Always said he is our most clinical finisher at the club. Just has no confidence, but how do you get any with daft 5 minute cameos here and there. Play him and gave faith, he will start banging them in.

Any striker will struggle the way we are playing at the moment.

{Ed025's Note - your right sa, we huff and puff around the area but dont actually create many clear cut chances imo mate..

13 Jan 2019 12:24:46
Could not agree more with the OP, I think Tosun is a great player and a clinical one at that - simply short on confidence and unfortunately a square peg to a round hole in Marco Silva's style of play / regime.

I've kept to myself the past few months, observing the general consensus of opinion from the fans on this site and there's one very common occurrence (which expands beyond this website and into most news and social media). People forge opinions. Often taken from a headline, story, decorated sports broadcast and twisted spectacularly in their own format believed to be their own (Corbyn taking Britain back to the 1970's; for example?).

Last season, people could not sing the praises of Tosun anymore. Hard worker, creates space, makes all the right runs, clinical finisher, brings others into the attack with his efficient hold-up play. There were so many positives.

Fast forward to this season and of all the Tosun related posts I would say 90% have the same format - forged from the person before. Too slow, not good enough, lacking quality, lazy, needs to look hungrier, not taken his chances (baring in mind the chances given to him have been drab in regards to both playing time and service on the pitch - consistency is required).

Yes, I admit, he is not world class. He is not going to score 20+ goals every season until his retirement. However, I absolutely guarantee he is the only person in this team (with the exclusion of Richarlison) who is capable of coming remotely close to that number. Quality and technical ability does not disappear over night (it rarely ever disappears). We have all seen his ability and we have all been incredibly impressed by it before.

The man has been absolutely starved of game time, service, love and appreciation and its laughable how the majority of our fan base can jump onto his flaws so tenaciously.

It's clear that Marco Silva does doesn't rate him under his regime and style of play, however his decision to exclude him as often as highlighted - does not not mean he has turned into a drab player over night.

If it were my choice as a manager - given the current crop of talent we have, Cenk Tosun would play every minute of every game. If any one individual can provide the goals to push us up the table - it is this man.

Unfortunately, with a combination of low self-confidence and no faith from the manager, we are compelled to losing him at a cut price, I just hope wherever he ends up he can be the great players he deserves to be at this club.

I hope he proves all the naysayers of Everton Football Club wrong.

Went to see the under 18s at Stoke
Very interesting game Everton more or less controlled the first half and likewise Stoke the second half
A few standout players for Everton were Einar Iverson Ryan Astley, Ellis Simms, Anthony Gordon had a very quiet second half but you a can see he could become something really special.

I know we need quality all over the squad but striker has to be priority and ASAP can be the difference from being a good season or another poor season even though I think we have right people in place now.

For sure mate but we have to address our leaky defence too.

The right DoF is in place but powder kept dry on others. 8 points off 18th and 11 points off 6th. First time in 3 Managers first Season we are in bottom half at this stage. We supposedly have better players, playing better football but worse results. So please tell me where is the weakness, are the 11 put out all thick so can't absorb tactics or instructions.

See where you are coming from dfs mate, as you rightly say we now have Marcel in place so hopefully Marco will have all of his own team in two or three Windows and not half an inherited like he has at the moment, not a five minute job this its going to take time.

Have been saying that for a while dfs mate that our defence needs sorting, and your right BigH but still a good 3points for them, would settle for that result tomorrow for us.

12 Jan 2019 16:51:29
Definitely GB, 3 points is 3 points and as long as we get them tomorrow and keep the pressure on W/ Ham and those above us it's all good.

12 Jan 2019 17:05:48
Exactly BigH mate I would take 3 points by hook or by crook tomorrow, its all getting close around us at the mo, just hope Marco can get a striker in and hopefully do something for our leaky defence, we are losing too many goals even when 1 or 2 up.

Watched the Leeds Derby game and was impressed with Adam Foshaw who controlled the game from midfield displaying a great engine, ability to tackle and break up play showing pace and energy throughout and was central in launching Leeds attacks everything we are missing in our midfield.
I acknowledge it is Championship level but nevertheless impressive.
Oh and he is an Everton academy player who was deemed 'not good enough' by either Moyes or Martinez.

Should be an open (ish) game tomorrow and depending on a few results this afternoon a win could see us move up 3 places to 8th. I believe. Do you? COYB!

No, I don't believe we can move up to 8th, not unless there is 4 points for a win.

Oh do try to keep up you blert. 'Before' the West Ham game - which was when I posted - they were on 28 we are on 27 so if they lost or drew and we won tomorrow we'd overtake them and be up to 8th place on 30 points. Obv can't happen now because as I say Arsenal were awful and WH have moved onto 31.
