Ok, so this isn't a rumour per se, though it does an awful lot of speculation so hear me out. Leighton Baines has became the heart beat of our club. He's a scouser, a top professional, arguably the best attacking left back in the league and possibly the world. He topped the stats last season for chances created and is a top penalty and free kick taker. On paper he seems perfect and indeed that's what fuels our desire to keep hold of him. Nobody likes to lose their best players and be labelled a "selling club". But is it all that bad? Baines is 28, 29 this year, meaning he has maybe 3 years left at his top, top ability. Coleman on the other hand has been showing consistently that he looks to be developing in the same way as Bainesy, only as an RB rather than a LB. Oviedo also looks promising and the word from within the club is that Garbutt is going to be a class act. Would it be the end of the world if we sold off Baines (for top, top money) and used it to reinvest in the squad? Look at what Spurs are doing at the moment with Bale. Nobody can tell me that they're not a little envious of the players they're bringing in. I don't want to lose Baines myself, but I actually think its more imperative we keep Fellaini as he proved on Wednesday his worth to us. So I ask, where do we all stand on this situation?

1.) The more I think about it, the more I'm favouring Baines to leave ahead of Fellaini. Although he'd be near impossible to replace, he's only got 2 years on his contract and is, as you say, getting older. Fellaini still has 3 and is 25. If we could get Siqueira and McCarthy then I'd reluctantly sell for £17-18m.

what we must also consider is for the past 4/5 years until we got in coleman, our main attacking threat came through Baines and Pienaar as they were so well suited to each other on the left hand side. Pienaar likes to move inside allowing baines the space to run forward and attack the opposing full back on the overlap. Baines' pace has been the greatest asset in this partnership as he runs forward he is so hard to track by either the right winger or opposing right back, which is why it has been succesful. this also is more than likely why he is held in such high regard by our supporters confirming the statements like "the best left back in the league and possibly the world" and "top assist maker in 2012-13 season" As good as baines is, I'm torn between whether now would be the best time to sell him as a 28/29 year old, but only if the price is right or to keep him and expect very little sell on value in a couple of seasons time when he is not good enough to play for us! he would provide us with 2/3 more years of quality, but then his pace (main asset) would start to disappear, then you would have an average at best left back because defending is certainly not his strongest point. 3.) I would tend to agree but teams sit back now to nulify are attack on the left

Funny that BK is still bein slated even though he's been mooted as a deciding fa for in getting lukaku (due to his relationship with his agent who also reps Mirallas). Also, just because we said pay over four years doesn't mean we're skint. Madrid still owe Spurs money over Modric and I wouldn't say they're skint so wind ya neck in ya Blue Union doom mongerer.

I don't think BK has been as bad as you're making out. Most of the players that Spurs have bought would never have chosen us over them. They can offer more money, live in London (a big draw to over seas players vs Liverpool) and they are undoubtedly closer to top four and look more likely to win a cup than us. So to say that we could have signed players like Capoue or Eriksen and that it's Kenwright's fault we haven't is rubbish. We need to stop looking through rose tinted glasses expecting us to have the draw to sign champions league too quality and well known players. Regardless of whether we have money, and I believe ed25 when he says we do, we cannot compete with the likes of spurs etc. I'd be gutted if we sold fellaini (more so than Baines) but to say its BKs fault would be presumptuous as we don't know whether fellaini or baines will have asked to leave, whether Martin ex has authorised it to reinvest etc so just stop blaming Kenwright sice it's the easy thing to do, and just support the bloody team. One things for certain and that is we need a strong and positive support otherwise it'll undermine everything that Martinez is trying to do. It is after all only three games into the season, two clean sheets and undefeated.

I've liked Osman for years and defended him to my mates and the like, but I've been really disappointed with him for a while now. He seems to have lost all his pace and fatigues easily and I can't recall the last game where he had a major influence on. I think Barry would be a decent shout, especially on loan as he is experienced and a good CDM. I also think that Mirallas has been poor compared to his pre-season and one can only speculate whether he's been unsettled by Fellaini's UTD move etc. What I do know though is that we are missing Gibson, and its obvious to see that our team is in desperate need of a playmaker and a top striker. I know Barkley is good and will one day be our main playmaker, but at the moment we need something closer to the finished article to unlock defences when their tactics are clearly set to defence like Cardiff's was today {Ed025's Note - i agree mate.

Yeah, I wouldn't say 15 million is the worst thing in the world for McCarthy. I do think that a lot of you are being swayed by the fact he plays for Wigan, Martinez is their ex-manager and for some that has raised questions over his ability (both Bobby and McCarthy). That being said, we knew **** all about Fellaini when we signed him for 15 million but we were all excited and he's turned out alright like. If, (and it should be pointed out that its all speculation) we are going to bid 15 million for McCarthy, then I think we should trust Martinez' judgement. By all accounts, the guy is a rough diamond and for what people are paying lately for players (read Bale and half of Spurs' signings) then 15 million isn't a "huge" amount of money to spend. Its practically the new 7 million in our transfer market now.

Love how you're slagging off "Kenwrong" for something that is purely conjecture and tabloid sensationalism. No wonder we're called the bloody bitters looking at some of the responses. How about doing something novel and actually supporting your team, instead of moaning about anything and everything {Ed025's Note - i keep saying that crobs..

I agree tbh. This isn't exactly a new thing that has suddenly came with Martinez style of footy; we've lacked a cutting edge/predatory striker for God knows how long. We've never really been a team that shoots on site under Moyes and probably won't be under Martinez. We do need a top striker and I think that given Kone had a poor pre-season (which I'm putting down to Ramadan) we should be slightly patient with him. Jelavic looks lost out there with a touch of an elephant. I think we need to look slightly positively and take the fact that we've had two clean sheets as a positive and just be patient with Martinez
