Just read the news about Amadou Onana being targeted by racist abuse online. How absolutely dreadful.

I often tell my children how far we've come as a society and that things were much worse in the 80s when I was a boy, but I am increasingly of them opinion that this isn't true and that nothing has changed (my daughter is 17 and often tells of the awful sexist abuse she gets at school) . It's all so very depressing and I am glad Onana has called this out.

As long as there are parents who discriminate, there’ll be kids who discriminate unfortunately. There has been progress, but that doesn’t make these incidents any less impactful for those involved.

Majority of my working life and indeed growing up was outside of the UK, some Countries the abuse toward Women and indeed toward people different was terrible. On return to this Country majority was spent in London (multi cultural) and the abuse there was bad. I think modern day UK (Worldwide) is not necessarily worse but more media wide ranging and supposedly advanced. As a result the competition for 'Headlines' can reach desperate levels.

There are too many racist idiots with bigoted thinking given a platform on TV, the Internet, get featured on the news etc that normalise controversy and influence others into thinking they have freedom to say what they like and everyone wants to hear their messed up opinions too. The Premier League / Fifa have the power to make changes to punish and in turn eradicate racism and other unacceptable thinking but are too cowardly to do so. Players taking a knee is not enough and becomes tokenistic, when it will be more effective if clubs are punished harshly with eg points deductions. That will soon shut the dongheads up.

Unfortunately this is a society problem and until society accepts this and deals with it accordingly it will carry on. We all have to take responsibility to eradicate this problem and the sooner the better we should make sure these people have no place in our society.

I saw it reported on the BBC and couldn’t believe it. Just stupid idiots being stupid idiots. It really hacks me off that people behave like this. I’ve worked with kids for many years and agree that the prejudices of the parents is a major root of it all. What were they thinking? How is making comments like that helpful or ending well in any circumstance?

You can be annoyed with the team and how they played but that sort of behaviour is outright disgraceful. I’ll add to Steve’s comment and say there is no place in society for this behaviour.

Agree with jbtoffee, while parents continue to discriminate and do not create the right environment for their children this will continue.

There is generally a lack of any respect for elders, police, women and teachers in todays Society.

Unfortunately I do not have the answers, wish I did.
