If a new left-back will only sign for us if we make him first choice (albeit not guaranteed) starter ahead of Leighton Baines (who'd become the backup/ cover) , would you accept that as fans?

If he is a better left back then yeah. I'd be playing Antonee Robinson left back in cup games this season. But for a Baines replacement I'd think Frank Fabra, Joe Bryan or Aarron Martin.

LB is certainly required.
Baines is still ok. He's not as desperate to be ousted from the team as say, Williams of Jags.

I'm sure a younger LB of quality would be able to displace Baines quickly but I think Baines still has something to offer.

Ideally he'd be into his last season for us. But we have a knack of having really old long serving defenders.

got to start giving baines limited time really, if we got a new left back I think the season would be a season of rotating them easing the new one in and easing good ol bainsey out.

It only works like that with a youth player.
We're probably just going to go a buy a ready made LB. So it will be a simple shoot out of the best player gets picked.
