Do the Eds know if Galtier is being looked at at all? Has done an amazing job with Lille and St Etienne in France and reckon he would be a great fit.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Not an option for Everton.}

Ed - in the past you have championed Lucien Favre as an ideal manager for Everton. Still seems a top manager and now out of work - any chance we would be in for him now?

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Lucien Favre would be a great choice but I suspect he has age against him now.}

Eds - is there any interest in Bertrand Traore and Kenny Tete at Lyon? Reports are saying both are available and both would improve our right side while fitting the Brand's signing profile.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Bertrand Traore (RW/F) Crystal Palace, Newcastle, West Ham and Leicester have enquired after his availability - Lyon want €40M and want to hold on to him - and there is the complexity of Chelsea having an option of a buy back clause that was due to expire but has been extended. Would be a hard sell to the player who wants to try his luck in Italy although there is no interest. I am not aware of any approach by Everton.

Kenny Tete (RB) has been subject to an approach by Milan and Mino has been offering him around - I am not sure of any approach by Everton.}

Gbamin in, Kean on the way - it's looking very promising for us right now. I think we still need a RW and CB, and Silva has also said he wants a RB (though Holgate can cover) .

I can't see any more major signings though - possibly a few loans. With our spending over the past few seasons and low commercial income we must be pushing FFP close already (good financial analysis provided by @theesk on twitter for those interested)

Also we currently have a squad of 28 - that needs reducing to 25. So if we sign 3 more then that means we need 6 out. Should be doable with Martina, Murallas, Bolasie, Onyekeru, Besic, Pennington,

Toffee in Herts

1.) 03 Aug 2019 10:21:12
were not pushing FFP we've spent roughly 5 mill after net profit due to sales an loan fee’s plus wages saved we should still have a way to go before we get close to the FFP.

{Ed001's Note - that is simply not true, we really shouldn't even discuss finances because it is so complex. For starters FFP only matters if you are in Europe. Secondly you do not get all the money from sales and loans, any player who has not requested a transfer gets 5% of the money, a further 5% is split between those clubs who trained the player at youth level. So there is 10% of any fee gone before you get into paying up contracts, agents fees (which can number into the millions per deal), solicitors' fees, taxes etc. You might not have even saved wages as sometimes the selling club continues to pay a percentage to make the deal happen. And that is just a few of the things cutting into sales. There are also excess costs on a buy, such as agent fees and signing fees for players.}

2.) 03 Aug 2019 10:25:30
Also its a UEFA ruling so only comes into effect if the club in question has qualified for a UEFA competition and we havnt yet.

3.) 03 Aug 2019 10:27:30
in fact I've just checked the incomings to outgoings and were £5 mill in profit without loan fees.

4.) 03 Aug 2019 10:58:46
McCarthy, Niasse and Tosun (maybe) to add to that list.

5.) 03 Aug 2019 11:18:52
Great reply ed001, my self as a fan don't take all this into account, I just think in transfer fees etc. Which brings on impatience and panic. Cheers mate.

{Ed001's Note - honestly it is better to just forget about the money. Everton have done some really good business this summer, Kean could be something special. There is still time left as well.}

6.) 03 Aug 2019 11:28:03
People think that it’s like football manager where the fee is all It is!
Mr Moshiri is a billionaire for a reason! He runs businesses properly and keeps in the black! If money wasn’t there to spend or at least the things in place to generate it then we wouldn’t be spending! I wouldn’t be shocked to see another £100+ spent (that’s the figure we see as fans) this summer!
We know what we need and they will spend what it takes to get it!

7.) 03 Aug 2019 13:02:00
Agree, great post ed. I knew there was more to it than just selling a player and getting the money but I didn't know there were payments to the clubs who the player was with at youth level. Think that's great, out of interest do you know if the 5% is common across other leagues/ countries?

{Ed001's Note - it is across all countries. So even a player like Gueye would have required 5% to go from his fee.}

8.) 03 Aug 2019 14:45:35
Out of curiosity if they request a transfer do they waive that fee? And in that case does it go to the selling club?

{Ed001's Note - if a player hands in a written transfer request, they forego the 5% of the transfer fee that they would otherwise receive. That is why players are often asked by a selling team to do so in order to make a move go through.}

Ed - just wondering if we have an interest in Fabian Delph?

It is being reported on SSN and would be quite an interesting signing - a departure from our ethos so far (bad) , but would improve our squad and by all accounts is an excellent dressing room presence.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach but I am aware of an "agent" having said three sides have an interest in him "if the price were reasonable" - so certainly a maybe.

If my two cents are worth anything Everton should have pushed harder for Morgan Sanson after enquiring.}

1.) 09 Jul 2019 14:16:18
Thanks Ed - great information as always.

Always interesting to hear your views on players as well as they are invariably names that we don't hear much about.

I've recently been reading a brilliant book about the use of data in scouting (Football Hackers: The Science and Art of a Data Revolution by Christoph Biermann) . It talks about teams (Brentford, Liverpool, Dortmund, FC Midtjylland etc. ) and individuals (Lucien Favre, Sven Mislintat, Thomas Tuchel etc. ) using advanced player data models and stats in recruitment and coaching etc. to great success both on and off the pitch to allow them to punch above their weight.

Do you know if Silva / Brands have a similar data based approach to help identify targets?
How sophisticated/ modern is our approach to recruitment, or are we behind the curve?

{Ed002's Note - I don't know TiH but about 18 months or so ago the conference rooms were being used by orgainsations who sell these sorts of software packages and clubs were represented by those responsible for doing the performance analysis of players. The sales pitches were pretty heavy.}

2.) 09 Jul 2019 14:24:32
Do you think we have missed out on the chance of a good player there Ed002? Sanson is not a name I have heard/ seen mentioned before. Thanks for your time!

{Ed002's Note - Most certainly.}

3.) 09 Jul 2019 18:07:17
Although only rumors, there has been mutterings of Delph over the past couple of Days here on Merseyside, for what it’s worth, my understanding is he will be an Alan Harper type utility player covering a few positions.

If Gaye pushes for a move then in my opinion we have an excellent player in Delph to bring in as a replacement, same age as Gaye and a very under rated player.

Like I say just rumours but very strong rumour.

4.) 09 Jul 2019 17:32:02
Hi Ed have we missed out because he is off somewhere else now or just cooled our interest.

{Ed002's Note - Not for either reason.}

5.) 09 Jul 2019 20:33:31
Sanson is quality. I'd be chuffed to bits if we managed to sign him.

6.) 09 Jul 2019 21:56:16
Thanks Ed so does that mean we still may be in for him? Or have we messed around on any potential deal by not pushing hard enough and torpedoed our chances?

{Ed002's Note - there has been nothing from Everton recently.}

7.) 09 Jul 2019 22:54:33
Delph is a wonderfull player but is injury prone sadly, when fit is a true international class player, would improve us greatly if fit.

Hi Eds, wondering if there is any interest in Malang Saar now he's a free agent?

Left footed CB available on a free, seems like plenty of clubs would be interested.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - There has been a lot of interest in him but not from Everton.}

22 Jun 2020 22:30:43
Bit of a random question for Eds - is there any interest in Jeff Hendrick?

Not a fashionable name, but a solid prem player for the squad and would add much needed energy while having the tactical discipline to play central or right of a midfield 4 in a Carlo 4-4-2. Available on a free as well so could be attractive given curent financial constraints.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Yes but not from Everton.}

1.) 23 Jun 2020 16:35:40
Ac milan I heard want him - maybe they think its Jimmy Hendricks.

08 Mar 2020 18:46:44
Another frustrating day, no energy in midfield and we need a clearout of the high wages. Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin, Keane and Walcott all need to be moved on in my opinion and we need to be smart about who we sign.

At RB, I would bring back Kenny.
CB, Bring Gibson into the squad and sign one other to replace Keane - perhaps Ajer from Celtic?

CM is biggest need - we need far more energy. Only Gomes and possibly Gbamin in the current squad could be good enough. Possible bargain options doing really well could be Adam Maher at Utrecht or Teun Koopmeiners (22) who has captained AZ to 2nd in Eredivisie. Maybe a bargain for Ndombele if he continues to fall out of favour, or Kalvin Philips if Leeds don't come up.

RM we're short already, let alone if we get rid of Walcott. Tempted to sign Sidibe if we either keep him away from RB, or can move him on quickly for a profit. Otherwise any other options? Maybe Ryan Fraser?

This summer needs to be the one we switch from aging, bloated squad on high wages to a young hungry squad looking to get better.

Toffee in Herts

1.) 08 Mar 2020 19:08:01
Gomes was to slow in midfield, even in La Liga, he is talented but not for the Prem. Gbamin! who knows!

2.) 08 Mar 2020 21:00:26
Gomes has been back a couple of games, give him some time to get his match sharpness back, he was out for a long time. Agree an additional CM is needed, plus RW and CB. I think DCL has made the CF position his own luckily so won’t need to buy anyone for that position and see how Kenny does on his return, if he can carry his form through that’s RB sorted. If we can sell Sigurdsson, Schneiderlin and Tosun to help with FFP and maybe reinvest for 1 player then perhaps promote from within for the other positions.

On another note I’m really confused why Sigs is being played on the wing, surely that’s Bernards natural position.

3.) 08 Mar 2020 21:04:53
Gomes needs pacey players around him, but they have to be good footballers, not the shower we have now.

4.) 09 Mar 2020 10:04:56
Brassington, spot on.

02 Aug 2019 15:55:23
So Maguire has joined Utd for £80m - their 7th centre back.

Maybe it's a hangover from the Steve Walsh era, but I'm just terrified that this will be followed up by "Everton complete £40m double deal for Smalling and Rojo"!

Toffee in Herts

{Ed025's Note - i hope not TIH..

1.) 02 Aug 2019 17:02:32
Would of like if is to complete our cb signing before maguire went incase his prices makes all the other clubs value there cb’s higher now.

09 Aug 2018 20:23:27
Exciting season ahead!

Chelsea, utd and Spurs all with poor windows. Us, West Ham and Leicester all excellent windows. Plus Fulham and Wolves unknown quantities.

Don't think we will finish top.

Excellent signing for that price. Better than Jimmy MC, Morgan and Besic - so immediately improves our squad. Adds valuable experience as well.

All accounts are that he is an excellent dressing room presence as well - from both Guardiola and Southgate. Look at how good Miller has been for Liverpool, and how good Barry was for us.

Think he's a quality player - but isn't our problem too many no 10s / centre mids?

We need to sign players who fit the system and provide balance across the squad, not just for their quality - otherwise we will make the same mistakes as last summer.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Only one side has approached Chelsea about RLC and it is not Everton.}

Very British level of arrogance that we think 2nd tier in England is better to play in than top 6 in Germany!

I'm divided over this to be honest. I would love Lookman to stay and play a major role in the 1st team this season. But considering that isn't happening under Sam, then half a season on loan with one of the most exciting teams in Europe is surely the next best thing.

I know Zaha at his best would improve our team hugely, but am I the only one who doesn't want us to spend our money for the next few years on a player who wants to play for another team, struggled every time he has been outside London and has no resale value?

I would much rather us to sign a CB, a better value RW and be financially viable and sensible than bust it all on an excellent, but inconsistent winger.

DC - I would love Everton to take a more homegrown approach. At the moment I don't think we have an identity as a club - for the first time that I can remember. I would love us to take a homegrown approach.

Ricktee - you said "Why aren't our players as ready as other countries, or is it just the stakes are so high with TV money etc that managers are just too afraid to give the kids a chance. "
It's definitely the latter. And I think our youngsters are getting fed up of it. There is an exodus of exciting young prospects at 18-21 moving to Europe to get game time, and I think it is going to do them the world of good.

AWB will be £40m+. We should be investing that sort of money in other areas of the squad first - if at all. With the way Coleman has been playing he's still got another year left in him, and we have Kenny and Holgate behind him as well. If we look to replace him then it shouldn't break the bank (already have Gomes + Zouma + striker to sign)

Plus, very much doubt AWB will come to us. He will have a number of Champions League teams to pick from. And from his point of view - why would he leave his hometown club for Everton - not quite a sideways step but certainly not the jump up in stature or money he would probably want.

Toffee Ace - Agree. It's going to be a very interesting season next season. Liverpool and City will be challenging again, and if Spurs can keep hold of their stars then they will be up there too.

Utd will throw money at the problem - then it's up to Ole to make it click. Arsenal will improve under Emery as he builds his team and Chelsea have the transfer ban to deal with.

With any luck we can capitalise on a slip - but you would put us in a group alongside Leicester and Wolves as the teams to take advantage. Wolves look best placed right now if we're honest. And dare I say whoever doesn't finish 7th (and get Europa) this season may have the best chance next.

But we shouldn't kid ourselves how far away we are. Even with the great wins we are 15 points behind the top 6. I'm a fan of Silva and Brands and think we are heading in a positive direction, but let's focus on improving and continuing to build a young exciting team - if we do that then who knows what can happen.
