Read a piece yesterday about our issue with transfers is that we do not have an identity or formation. We all know we need a RB but he'll need to be able to play RWB too, we need a RW with pace but if we're playing with wingback, where does he fit in? We need goals but does that mean a no10, CF or a winger who has pace, crossing, work rate, plus goals (hard to find in our range) ? The top teams tend to have their set formations and then make 1/ 2 personel changes game by game without upsetting positions/ other players.

Statement of the obvious mate and personally beyond my paygrade!

2.) 31 May 2021 01:00:11
That’s why we have used so many formations and players in various positions which ever system Carlo plays it’s still not balanced, right side is week need a new RB and Right sided attacking player.

3.) 31 May 2021 08:56:23
Perhaps it is a double entendre. When he has the right players, he won't be forced to change formation so much. Defenders who don't run to the halfway line with the ball, then turn back to the keeper. Midfielders who can play a pass through the oppositions midfield. Strikers who don't have to come back to midfield to help defend.

Nkounkou wow! Not one for the hype train but how did we manage get him in on the cheap? Lad looks class n has a little attitude in him too. Pleased for Kean, Bernard and Iwobi tonight but back to normal for Pickford.

He's our weak link at the moment and I think tonight might be last straw for Carlo. Also, don't understand why bring on Davies if Saints are interested and Walcott is available to come on unless we've had offer for him as well?

Cornerflagjab

1.) 24 Sep 2020 17:21:46
Davies was brought on for Delph as a holding midfielder. Walcott is not a holding midfielder, in fact I’m not really sure what he is.

2.) 24 Sep 2020 18:49:38
Cornerflag - Marcel Brands. He’s the reason we’ve unearthed the gem Nkounkou.
Totally fits in with the way he does business getting these young players in with the potential to sell on at a profit in the future This is what he was brought in to do and he’s finally being allowed to do it. Hopefully he gets his contract extended.

3.) 24 Sep 2020 19:58:35
Totally agree with that sentiment GD, hope we see some more Brands Gems come in and shine
It’s been smart business by the club in my opinion, James, Allan and Doucoure for the here and now, gives us 3 seasons to be bringing in new talent and integrating them into the first team.

4.) 24 Sep 2020 20:47:54
I meant bring Walcott on for Ricco instead of Davies on for Delph. The games was won and I woulda protected him from injury and given Delph a full game/ protected Davies from injury with the Soton link.

5.) 25 Sep 2020 07:16:44
It was 3-2 at the time, the game was far from won. It was a tactical substitution.

6.) 25 Sep 2020 09:12:15
Delph had been out for 7 months. I'm not sure I can remember any player anywhere out for so long to come back 1st game and play 90 mins. Or was that your plan? Hoping to get him back to sickbay? If there is one thing we all know about Rikky, it's that the guy is made of hardened steel. I don't really wince anymore when I see him getting kicked repeatedly. He gets up, gives his death stare and gets ready for the free kick. I'm sure once we get waist deep into the season that subbing players off once games are won will be the norm. It was only the 4th match of the season and one with 1 warm up match? Its still pre season in the fitness race. Won't be full tilt for another week or 2.

19 Sep 2020 01:23:26
See Lozarno being linked again but I think our front three is sorted now and don't see him getting in ahead of Ricco - maybe we're lookin to cash in on him if reporting true about HL? If Ricco stays, as much as I like HL, I'd rather spend to strengthen with quality in def.

Cornerflagjab

1.) 19 Sep 2020 22:43:35
Reckon he will move James inside to were Gomes is playing and rotate midfield.

2.) 20 Sep 2020 00:01:24
I disagree about the front 3 being sorted, we don’t have much quality cover If we get an injury or two. Kean not looking up to it at the moment, Walcott, Bernard and iwobi aren’t good enough.

{Ed0666's Note - I’m saddened about Bernard not kicking on I had high hopes for him

3.) 20 Sep 2020 09:31:47
Totally agree with Cookie, if Carlo can get himself a right winger I think James will get more games in the middle than Gomes.
More importantly is trying to get Mina to play like a centre back, he scares me more than Yobo and Stones put together.

4.) 20 Sep 2020 11:26:53
Bernard was quality vs ‘salford’ an will get another chance midweek, but based on our 2 prem games, who is going to get a chance in that team apart from a centre back? We could still up up with zaha, him tomori and arias would be nice.

5.) 20 Sep 2020 22:05:03
Ed0666, why do you think Bernard hasn't kicked on? Is it because of the rigours of the league or is it to do with the problems with his mental health/ anxiety that has made him stagnate? For me, he's one of those players that you want to see do well every game but he doesn't score or assist enough. It would be a shame to see him go.

{Ed0666's Note - I’m not sure pal. It’s not a cultural thing as he has Richie and the Brazilian lads at Liverpool to knock about with. Maybe it’s a tactical thing? Maybe he should play more centrally where he can affect play more a bit like the Bobby does for Liverpool. With Ancelotti favoring a 4-3-3 maybe that’s the way forward. I hope it’s not a psychological thing as no one deserves that.

6.) 21 Sep 2020 14:12:44
The problem with Bernard is he doesn’t really have the pace to play out wide for us and his decision making is poor which ruins him down the middle

Good player who had some good games for us but he only plays well maybe 4-5 games a season in the league which isn’t enough.

{Ed025's Note - i agree swan..

7.) 22 Sep 2020 12:44:43
Ed0666, cheers for the reply. Never thought about the positional side of it, wasn't he predominantly an attacking midfielder rather than a winger before we signed him? As I said previously, he definitely had mental health troubles, fingers crossed the lad has got them sorted.

8.) 22 Sep 2020 12:44:43

{Ed0666's Note - Correct mate he played as a playmaker under Fonseca at Shakter. Actually he was part of three attacking midfielders who were given the freedom to roam the other two being marlos and taison. I agree mate let’s hope he can banish his issues as their is a fine player in there.

Very happy to get the 3 in if the reported fees are right (60-70mill) . Just goes to show what a farce we've been prev yrs but it's nice to see us getting some value for our money. Couple of loans now and I'll be happy as long as we see a cpl leaving the wage bill. On wages, are there any whispers of potential leavers? Soggy has quality but will get squashed by James and doubt really see us playing with wingers that often.

Do you think we would be interested in taking IGG back from PSG after they've declared a clear out to free up Messi wages? He wasn't just a DM, would strengthen the middle and loved the club by all accounts.

Just seen Timmy Howard on ssn. What a guy and what a keeper he was and how I'd love to have him in this current team! Class.

Best left foot - James, Sheedy, Baines or Hinchcliffe?

Cornerflagjab

1.) 02 Sep 2020 18:41:40
Sheedy’s left was magical, followed closely by Baines. Haven’t seen enough of James.

2.) 02 Sep 2020 18:45:45
Sheedy for me mate, that left peg was like a magicians wand. Will have to reserve judgement on James until he's signed and played a few games.
Baines and Hinchcliffe had a great left foot it has to be said, just a pity they were in competition with Sheeds!

3.) 02 Sep 2020 19:20:05
Sheeds for me, baines next.

4.) 02 Sep 2020 19:38:23
Sheedy! Sheedy! Sheedy!

5.) 02 Sep 2020 19:55:52
Sheedy was pretty much responsible for me becoming an Everton fan. He will always be one of my favourite players with either foot, so definitely the best with the left!

02 Sep 2020 12:24:57
Anyone else wondering how we fit Doucoure, Allan and Gomes in the same side? Can only see it if CA switches to a 3 up top with Ricci on the left again, DCL middle and JR on the right but we saw the benefit of DCL in a pair. Maybe a diamond with JR behind the strikers but then we're reliant on fullbacks being the only width and no place for Iwobi, Bernard etc who are amongst highest earners but not starting. Can't see either being moved on in this window. Guess it's a nice problem to have if the money ain't mine.

Cornerflagjab

1.) 02 Sep 2020 12:57:08
I was thinking we could play 4-3-3 narrow, but when attacking, the full backs push up and Allan drops back so it would be like 3-4-3, Carlo used that a few times last season.

2.) 02 Sep 2020 13:00:23
can maybe see 4-2-3-1 and as for gomes am afraid its the bench.

3.) 02 Sep 2020 13:34:37
Gomes may be on the bench.

4.) 02 Sep 2020 14:36:46
I’m not sure we will have James for the entire season. He tends to pick up injuries. So we will need options. And of course competition.

5.) 02 Sep 2020 17:59:41
Don't think I could leave Gomes out. I think he's suffered more than most with the lack of quality, fight and pace in the middle. He was immense with Gueye and my mouth does water with him, Doucoure and Allan as a trio. Should be a match for most midfields. Bring on Romero next and get a few out.

24 Aug 2020 16:11:37
Cannot believe the lazy paper rubbish about CA wanting out. He would have known the situation before joining. Without any signings, as soon as Silva left we looked better (if we don't include the weirdness after the restart) , and Carlo will only improve most with his man management skills.

Yes, we have not made any signings but neither have most and of you really cared about the club (or if it was your money) , you wouldn't be spending just for the sake. I'd much rather just get rid of some more and work with a smaller squad and actually save the money for a signing we actually want/ need. Look at what Sheff Utd and Wolves did without blowing the bank up, being sensible and biding their time/ actually coaching players.

Cornerflagjab

1.) 24 Aug 2020 18:46:07
Yes he may have, then C.V. 19 kicked in, ffp, and players wages with no gate receipts hasn't helped, plus players on high wages we need to move on, that are not moving, i'm sure there is a plan, but as usual, us fans will be the last to know COYB.

{Ed025's Note - this pandemic is killing us graham, no one is looking to take on our over paid players as money is very tight and they are not likely to take a cut so i cant see many of them moving mate..

2.) 24 Aug 2020 22:08:50
To be fair Ed I think we were having issues shifting a lot of these players before the C.V.

3.) 24 Aug 2020 23:05:55
Hopefully the penny has dropped with Moshiri and Brands. Stability on the manager front is most crucial and then getting his players in whilst working with what he has got. Never understood why we went for RK and Ms on the first place - we used to be k own as the people's club but our identity changed as we invested in the wrong leaders that didn't tie in with our identity.

Whether money is or isn't available right now, it's not just us and I believe we already have the quality there to challenge top 7/ 8. Remember, technically CA hasn't even had 6 months proper with the players yet because of the C.V. and lockdown. Carlo comes across as a sensible head who takes pride in his work - I think the Challenge will only spur him on and getting us anywhere near the top 5 would be one of his biggest achievements considering the mess we were in and what a Yr 2020 has been.

It's OK saying Benitez out next but who comes in? There's not a mass of quality managers out there, especially ones that would take a down step. Whether he stays or not, the fact is we have no money, will likely lose Richarlison, maybe more and we will have no choice but to get youth more involved. Gordon, Simms, Dobin and Branthwaite need a run of games.

The Messi thing is going to have a knock on effect. I'd expect PSG would make LM their priority and not move for Kean. Inter have to sell and if Lukaku is headed for Chelsea, I cannot see them forking out 50-60 for Kean. Can't see AC or Juventus going for him with what they already have, so would expect Kean to stay and see more action. Rondon would purely be a back up for DCL and prob get a dozen games, most as sub or cup. Be a decent low cost short term signing.

Probably with the majority in not wanting him but we didn't rush the decision and Moshiri hasa dwill continue to fund us, so has the right to pick who he wants. Whatever we think, Moshiri is putting his money on the line and will be certain Raf is the right man. He'll always be the fat Spanish waiter but now he's our fat Spanish waiter. We have to get behind him. I just hope he starts well or it'll get tasty.

Some right idiots on here. Every single keeper makes mistakes and so called experts make the mistake of ruling them against outfield players, which is ludicrous. Keepers get better as they get older and Pickford is still learning but I'm v happy with his progress and am made up we've got him. He lacked competition prev and like all players, he needed someone to push n bring the best from him. Olsen was one of the best moves Carlo made in his short time.

{Ed0666's Note - he has got better that I grant you cornerflag.

I'd take Aaron's, Bissouma, pace with Bailey and Antony plus a striker to push Dom ie Dzeko, Cavani, Costa etc. Don't think that's unrealistic.

Need to put things in perspective. We're mid-table, have no money to spend and our spine has been/ is injured. We're all disappointed with last half dozen games but let's judge Rafa when he has our top players back and a couple more transfer windows. FFP and prev wastage has seriously damaged us but we can't turn back the clock and have to live with it. It'll probably get worse before it gets better ie, Richarlison being sold but for now our only aim should be staying in the prem league, shifting a bit more dead wood and a cpl youth players breaking through.

Just shows how much we rely on Doucoure and Mina. For me, Godfrey isn't a CB in a two. Either plays in a three or RB in a two, maybe DM but needs experience. Simms or Dobin should have been given the nod above Rondon but we have Ricco back now. Gordon needs to start regularly. For now I'd go Pickford, Digne, Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Gbamin, Allan, Townsend, Gray, Gordon, Ricco.

I honestly think this has been a very decent window. We acted like a kid finding a tenner in woolworths on Xmas eve and made so many mistakes. Now we've had to really think about where the money is going, we are making better decisions. Woulda been nice see a RB but we do have cover, just not sustainable quality. I think we'll compete in the top ten quite comfortably n may even be the surprise of the season if an avoid injuries to key players.

Can't believe the slating of Moyes on here. We may have had to sell to bigger clubs but as fir rolling over for them? I remember wins over Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and legends from nowhere in the shape of Pienaar, Baines, Cahill, Howard, Jags and Rooney. He didn't make many mistakes with transfers and we scored so many late goals, we were rarely beaten without a fight. Showing his class now at West Ham.
