I would take 7th/ 8th every season and that is what Moyes would give us. I don't get all this Moyes traitor thing.

DFS there is no chance Moyes would get 7th or 8th with us.

Majority think he did well with us previously but if you actually look at it that was when the league was relatively weak, these days there’s far more decent teams in the league and he’d struggle.

Spent a fortune at West Ham and has left them in a mess.

Always went into big games with the knife to a gunfight mentality.

He’s similar to Dyche in he’s too old school for the league these days if you want to be pushing for the top 8 places.

{Ed025's Note - im with you Dan, when you look at the players Moyes had then compared with this squad now there is no way he is getting us to those dizzy heights mate, hes a dinosaur who should be nowhere near our club imo..

Think everyone is forgetting Moyes bought the players in, we had year after year of relegation and he got us up the league players from the lowers leagues and he did a brilliant Job, people need to get over he left for United.

{Ed025's Note - i dont care that he went to United Pasty, in fact i was bloody made up mate..

Whilst I agree that Moyes would not be the right appointment today as the game has moved on, it is unequivocally incorrect to say that the league was weak back then.

This was a league that had the strongest Arsenal side ever. Man Utd under Fergie, riddled with top class players. Chelsea backed by Abramovich and Mourinho. Newcastle when they were actually decent and beating teams like Juventus and Inter in the San Siro - a team with top players like Given, Solano, Speed, Shearer and Bellamy. Liverpool who were winning trophies consistently, albeit not the PL.

Even below them 5, you still had the likes of Blackburn, Bolton and ourselves as the equivalents of todays Villa's, Spurs, Leicester's, Brighton's West Ham's finishing in the 6th-8th positions.

The only thing that has really changed is that City have come into the mix and Utd have fallen off a cliff.

You could have given Moyes all the money in the world. He could not handle big players. You need big players to win big prizes. He barely had his feet under the table at Man Utd and the signs were showing. The players even asked Fergie to speak to him, but, Moyes being Moyes, loaded both barrels, pointed them at his feet, and pulled the triggers. He got what he deserved. A best, he was a mid table manager good with a low budget and not what we require going forward. He will find his niche somewhere but not here.

Just soooooo glad to see the back of him.

{Ed025's Note - me too GB, some look back at his time with fondness mate but i can only remember the turgid defensive football we played im afraid..

Its the wins that turned to draws or draws that turned to losses that stick in my memory Ed.

Bolton, Villa, Leicester at Goodison. Games under control and playing well. On comes an old an aging Davey Weir and the game gets turned on it's head.

{Ed025's Note - yeah BN, im not saying it was all bad under him mate but it was so negative most of the time, we never even competed against the bigger teams and played for a draw it seemed to me..

I’m not pro Moyes returning, but saying couldn’t finish top 10 is just ignoring the achievements of the past. He achieved it many times with squads no better than we have.

Didn’t he get West Ham into Europe.

For my pennies worth, my first manager I saw us play under was Kendall (the second stint in the 90s) , Mike Walker, Walter Smith, Kendall again, a season under Joe Royle, Moyes, Martinez and the mess of the last 10 years. I think Moyes did well compared to some of the dross that played under some of them. Martinez was more attacking but we seemed more vulnerable in his second season and results dropped. Moyes was consistent for 8 years. I’d love to see us get someone in who can turn us back into an outfit worthy of the history but we have tried so many times and failed I just don’t know what to think. Basically, Moyes was not that bad.

I’d have lived to see us play under Kendall or Catterick when we won stuff. Sadly, I’ve not seen us dominate the league.

Catterick ruled the roost mate, players were terrified of him. Howard was a legend on and off the pitch. Totally different style of management, but both worked. And we played entertaining football.
But those were the days when the motto meant something.

I'd say that you only need to be able to handle big players at the clubs that have big players. We are not a club, right now at least, that doesn't have big players. Moyes was good at forging a great team spirit knowing that his teams weren't as talented as the big boys of that time. He bought in players that had desire and drive, players that would work hard and bot afraid to do the hard yards. The togetherness of the majority of his squads got results, albeit that went out the window when playing the top teams.
I'm not advocating for a return but I think some have lost perspective in their obvious dislike of the man. He was good for us at the time when he was here but that doesn't mean he would be good for us again now. That said, I think he's a better manager than what we have right now!

{Ed025's Note - its all down to how you see things i suppose BP, some will remember the good times and some will only remember the bad, for me the game has moved on from his management style and for us to move forward as a club we need a forward thinking manager...just my opinion of course mate..

Moyes management style was questioned long before joining Everton. When taking my law degree we had a guy from PNE on the course. He said that Moyes team selections at times were questioned and the directors did not see him getting PNE into the EPL. I think Moyes only had as long as he did with Everton due to BK. I think any other chairman would have got rid earlier.

Agreed ed25, I just think we should remember him in both good and bad rather than concentrating on one. Like most managers, he has had bad times as well as good but he definitely did some good with us, despite not winning a trophy. As I said, I don't want him back even though he's a better manager than what we have now but let's keep it real regardless of whether we like him or not.
Nick, I think that could be levelled at every manager at some point in their career. It doesn't matter what team you put out, you're going to upset a few fans along the way. Wasn't Preston his first managerial job? I'd be shocked if he didn't make any mistakes in his first role, that's how we learn at the end of the day. I don't agree he was kept at us because of BK, he had maybe 2 seasons where it looked like we were in trouble but I think he earned the right at that point to get us out of the mess he had a hand in creating.
For the record, I'll never want him back for the way he tried to treat us when he went to Utd. I know it sounds like I'm championing him for a return but that's not the case at all!
