So Ivanovic says he has had an offer from us? Now you could look at this in two ways.
1- we are skint and so are just looking to pad out the squad with older freebies who have/ had a winning history (though this didn't work with Rooney) .
2- Carlo thinks he is just what we need to get our players motivated during a game, and so is worth it regardless of his age.
Personally I was worried when we were looking to spend 40m on a 30 year old, as I felt that was pushing it. But is getting a 36 year old for nothing (I know he will get a good wage, sign on etc) , a better prospect?

Would probably depend on length of contract we may be offering him. If we’re trying to get him in for a season to provide cover and allow the younger defensive players to develop then may be a decent addition. I imagine Holgate would benefit from seeing his leadership abilities as I think Holgate would make a decent captain in a season or two.

If offering him a 3yr contract it would be a disappointing proposition.

Personally think we are alright in the defensive department with mina, Keane, Holgate and branthwaite but always good to have another option if we get injuries so this may be an inexpensive way to provide that option.

However if we’re looking at him to replace one of our back 4 or instead of going for Gabriel that would be disappointing.

The situation with Branthwaite has helped massively. I wouldn’t rely on Mina to have a full season as he’s injured a lot. So if we are going to bring Ivanović in, then maybe we can move Mina on.

As already mentioned, as long as the contract isn't a long one and that the wages aren't too high, I don't see why older, experienced players can't be brought in to help out. Players tend to look after themselves a lot better these days so being 34 shouldn't be a problem. But it has to be the right move for the club rather than lining the pockets of a player looking for a retirement pot. I'd pass on Ivanovic though! Even with the young lad stepping up to the first team, we still need a decent cb for the coming season.

The idea of us signing a 36 year old Ivanovic is ludicrous imo. If that’s a “Brands” signing or even an Anchelotti signing we might as well shut up shop.

Tbh the way we’ve spent are money over the last five years I think the majority of fans would’ve spent it better. Maybe not me mind as I would’ve spent it all on Rum.
