Worse than Howard? I doubt that.

Swan. what are you going to do when Howard retires?
I am sure I speak for most people on here when I say that your constant hounding of him is just pathetic.

I'd take Marshall from Cardiff in a heartbeat.

Efc4everpaul-how many times have you seen him play?
He's a quality keeper only second to lloris for France. Rubbish is a ridiculous statement as is crap Jcw!
Mandana is miles ahead of what we have.

It's pathetic because I doubt Mandanda is worse than Howard? Okay. Rainman, does that excuse him not coming 2 yards off his line to collect a cross? Spilling a shot in to the danger area? Getting beat at near post. When Howard goes I will be much happier.

04 Jan 2016 10:24:11
Mandana is quality! Those who doubt this are probably basing this on the fact he's been linked with villa. Fact is there is a constant debate in France as to whether it should be mandana or lloris in goal for France, go figure that he's rubbish.

Ok fair enough Howard is a liability at the moment. Best keeper around outside Man U, Chelsea, arsneal keepers is Hennessy of palace - that's the man we should get imo.

Agree2 Disagree1

04 Jan 2016 12:57:05
Rather we put Big Dunc in goal before Hennessy.

06 Jan 2016 11:46:16
Palace have a better team (check the table before you argue) , more money to invest, they are based in London and have a (now) highly rated manager. Why would he want to come to us?

Hey guys! Any news on actual transfers? I'm reading lots of different names at the minute but all getting linked with us and 2-3 other teams! I guess I'm just asking if there are any solid links atm?

{Ed002's Note - This has been updated (last Thursday) from the previous version Dave.

It is difficult to answer anything and pin it on January as clubs are not keen to sell – but I have tried to give a hint (but it is only my opinion about January). Lots of players are looked at over the course of a season and I will try and capture as many of the ones where there has been more than a glance or two:

Goalkeeper:

Possible: Aston Villa and Norwich are both looking at Marseille's Steve Mandanda with interest from elsewhere (notably Crystal Palace, Atletico, Spurs and Arsenal) seemingly gone. There was speculation that Everton had submitted a bid for a January move - but the offer that has been made is from Aston Villa. He is out of contract in the summer and Marseille would ideally like a new deal. They would prefer not to sell in January as it gives them a goalkeeping issue they don't want right now. I don't know where the supposed interest of Everton has come from but it would not be out of the question. There has been no approach made to Marseille at this time by Liverpool or Newcastle - but I am aware of reports. Stoke have also been keeping a watchful eye on the situation as they are concerned about losing Butland in the summer - I suspect that interest has gone. If Marseille are going to let him move in January they will look for a replacement first - right now they don't have one in mind.

Unlikely: I am not aware of any but Everton interest is not out of the question as he is available and will be moving in January: Roma have dropped their interest in Dnipro's Denys Boyko who looks to be on the way to Besiktas - possibly even as part of a double sale including centre back Douglas.

Centre Back:

Unlikely unless someone moves on: Milan's Christian Zapata will be available and might provide a solution for Everton if they were to lose a centre back. Everton has watched the player this season.

Unlikely: According to his agent there is interest in Nemanja Vidic from Aston Villa and Everton but the reported interest of Spartak Moscow is yet to be confirmed. Inter say otherwise, but would be open to a sale in January.

Unlikely: Werder Bremen's Yannik Vestergaard was subject of an approach by Newcastle in the summer but the club declined any chance to discuss a transfer. Southampton and Everton both watched the player at the start of the season but did not, according to his club, declare any formal interest.

Probable but not a first team starter: Everton have had an offer accepted by Bury for left-sided centre back Matthew Foulds fending off interest from Derby.}

Left Back:

Unlikely side of possible: Everton, Southampton, Swansea, Sunderland and West Ham have all maintained an interest in Leeds' Sam Byram. Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal have had him watched but it is now Aston Villa who are making an active effort to bring Byram to the Premier League. I cannot see he would want a relegation battle. The kid has the following options: (a) Sign a new contract with Leeds. (b) Opt for a January transfer if the right offer arrives - that would help Leeds out but the player would lose out on a signing on fee. (c) See his contract out and consider his options in the summer - including a potentially very hefty signing on fee.

Midfield:

Possible: Dynamo Kyiv managed to persuade Yarmolenko not to move this past summer and managed to get him to sign a new contract. There has been interest over the past year from Roma, Spurs, Stoke, Fiorentina, Everton, Inter and Dortmund. Bayer Leverkusen, Valencia, Napoli and Manchester City all dropped their interest and PSG, who were considering Yarmolenko as a possible option to replace Lavezzi this past summer, seem to have done the same - at least for now but there is a reasonable chance Lavezzi could move in January. Yarmolenko has expressed a desire to move to Barcelona or Chelsea - and there has been more than one approach made directly to the Chelsea to gauge their interest. Right now it looks like Barcelona are considering their options for a January bid, but much will depend for them on an entirely separate matter. Whilst an approach was made to the agent of Yarmolenko by Arsenal in the summer, nothing could be done. He spent the summer screwing everyone around and there is still a lingering view he could do the same in January. I don't know if anything can be done or if Everton, Arsenal or Barcelona will push, but Piero Ausilio was at a recent game to look again at him - so Inter might still be in the mix.

Possible but his club will try to resist a January sale: Auxerre midfielder Brahim Konate has been attracting the attention of a number of English sides with Everton, Reading, Ipswich and Brighton all having him watched this season.

Won’t happen: Liverpool have agreed in principle to the transfer of Red Star Belgrade's Marko Grujic after agreeing a record fee with his club and an astonishing wage offer. The player will almost certainly spend the rest of the season with Red Star and move in the summer. I don't know what promise of game time had been made but it has been suggested by his representative that Liverpool have offered him Gerrard's number 8 shirt as wel. This far outstrips any other offer, particularly if the club are promising game time. Inter could not match the transfer fee in cash and certainly not the wages even though they were his first choice destination. Chelsea offered a lower transfer fee (that could have been resolved) but would not be looking at him for the first team for probably two and a half years. That would comprise an initial loan back to Red Star (perhaps even next season at Red Star but that was not their preference) and then a year on loan in Europe as he is seen as being behind the pecking order of another midfield player who is going through that process already. Liverpool's offer has also ended interest from Napoli, Hamburg, Wolfsburg, PSG, Manchester United, Everton, Stuttgart, Manchester City and Roma - although none of these clubs put a firm offer on the table as I understand it. Much is expected of him.

Attacking Midfield/Wing:

I think Everton can complete a deal but not just yet – one for the future certainly and a real coup if the club can do it: Dinamo Zagreb's winger Josip Brekalo is on the "wonderkid" list but underage so any move is problemmatic in the short term. However, interest from Everton is sustained with both Dinamo Moscow and Monaco also showing an interest.

Unlikely side of possible: Bournemouth have been trying to buy Birmingham's Demarai Gray since January 2015 and have several bids rejected. They will return before January to try again. Leicester, Arsenal and Liverpool have also enquired after the player with Everton, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool watching him on several occasions. Leicester are in discussions with Birmingham.

Very unlikely: Manchester City, Atletico, Spurs and Valencia have all previously declared an interest in Gokhan Tore with Atletico having made two offers to take him as a replacement for Arda Turan in the summer. I would think any Manchester City bid is dependent on David Silva moving on and that has gone for now. Valencia will probably not now follow up on their interest. Spurs interest remains. Additionally, Besiktas has said that Arsenal has again watched the player. However, they have said that they are not looking to sell him over the winter window but are open to further discussions over making an agreement for a summer move to Atletico Madrid - and further discussions are scheduled. Besiktas have not been approached by West Ham United with any offer to take Tore back to London. but have admitted that Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal (again) have watched the player before the holidays.

If Arsenal don’t revive interest, possibly one for the summer: Empoli's Riccardo Saponara continues to be of interest to both Everton and Juventus who have been told they will not listen to offers before the summer. Previous interest of Norwich has waned.

Unlikely: Genoa's Diego Perotti will be available in the summer and may just be available in January at the right price. Everton, Belgrano, Arsenal, Vélez Sarsfield and Milan have looked at him recently with both Arsenal and Milan open to making a January deal.

Very, very unlikely: Braga's Rafa Silva has been of interested to Benfica, Everton, Southampton, Wolfsburg and Schalke for a number of months. West Ham, Real Betis, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille and Spurs have had him watched but to the best of my knowledge not enquired further at this time. Notably, Manchester United have watched in several recent games.

Forward:

Possible, and I think something can be done: Grasshopper's Shani Tarashaj has been watched by RB Salzburg, Everton and Sturm Graz. With his contract due to expire in the summer and with tentative interest being shown Grasshopper and the player extended his contract in order to shore up his price - but that won't deter an offer being made by Everton.

Possible: Bordeaux's Wahbi Khazri has attracted the interest of several English clubs including Swansea (whose interest may have gone), Newcastle, Stoke and Everton (strenghthening) already this season. Previous interest from Roma, Fenerbahce and Sunderland has gone. Lille and Arsenal had the player watched but have no declared interest. Aston Villa are interested but may need to survive before anything could be done. No offers have been made at this time.}

Unlikely side of possible: Manchester United and Bayern Munich have both been aware of Moussa Dembele since his time at PSG and were both interested in signing him when he opted for Fulham as a 16 year old. Newcastle, Lille, Juventus, Napoli, Everton and Spurs have also been looking at Dembele since the start of the season with recent glances from Liverpool, Chelsea, Marseille and Monaco. A move in January is possible with his contract running out at the end of the season but Slavisa Jokanovic will try and have him sign an extension, no doubt advising him that if he moves he could be sat on the bench or playing in the reserves.

Unlikely side of possible: Inter, Crystal Palace and Watford are interested in Kieta Balde Diao - but a move from Lazio in January is unlikely. Everton, West Ham and Shakhtar have watched the player this season.

Very unlikely: Mainz, PSV, Hannover, Bruge and Rapid Wien had shown interest in Sion’s Moussa Konate over the summer with most stepping back because of the asking price and Rapid Wien opting for Tomi Correa. Everton, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal have been represented at games this season and may follow up on their interest but all will be aware that it would be a big step up for the player who has struggled when chances came in Russia and Italy.

Very, very unlikely: Jese Rodriguez is again going to seek assurances about playing time that I am sure Real Madrid will not agree to and the expectation is that they will draw a line across and cash in on him. On the basis of this he has also said he may be forced to leave the club. Completely recovered from his crutiate injury Lazio, Inter, Milan and Bayer Leverkusen made clear their interest in signing the player in the summer, whilst Aston Villa, Napoli, Malaga, West Ham United and Everton had all shown an interest in taking him on loan. Real Madrid are moving in to a potentially difficult period regarding transfers (with a possible ban looming) and they will be happy to raise funds and it is possible it may return. Napoli are again looking for a deal - Arsenal or Chelsea may be an option for Jese Rodriguez.}

Won’t happen: Marseille have a sustained interest in Toulouse's Wissam Ben Yedder and thought they had completed a deal in the summer - they will return in January for the player who needs a change of club having struggled at the start of this season. Interest from Everton has gone and I suspect the interest of Spurs has now shifted elsewhere.

Won’t happen: Basel's Breel Embolo remains a target of Borussia Moenchengladbach, Spurs, Inter, Juventus, Red Bull Leipzig and West Ham with Basel aware of interest from all of these clubs in addition to Wolfsburg who have discussed a transfer with the club. Inter will push to agree a summer move as they don't have the money for a January transfer unless they can offload Icardi. Barcelona, Everton, Southampton, Liverpool, Arsenal and Leicester have also had the player watched.

I am going to say one possibly in January, perhaps two. The probable takeover will take up much of the Everton news in the coming weeks.}

Hi Ed a great and in depth response. My only question though surrounds Sam Byram a player I do like the look of the only thing is, like in your post, I keep seeing class him as a left back however I thought he was a right back and and currently being deployed as a right midfielder/ winger.

{Ed002's Note - Sorry - should say RB.}
