Now that Ireland have qualified for Euro 2016, I'd imagine that their players would want to be playing regularly for their club sides so that they could be first choice selections for their country. With that in mind, what are the odds that McGeady leaves us in January? RM did let Jelavic and Heitinga leave in similar circumstances ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals. The question is whether Mirallas would be similarly placed.

Apparently we are mulling over offering Ron Vlaar a contract. I'd rather not get him, he would be taking up Galloway and Browning's spot in the squad and isn't required. I'd rather develop what we have, Stones, Mori and Jags are enough with Tyias and Galloway as backup.

We named 24 players (aged over 21) in our Premier League squad at the start of the season and are allowed 25. If we've already added Mattioni (the Brazilian free agent) , then we cannot also add Vlaar (or any other free agen come to that) for the time being.
As Mattioni has immediately gone out on loan, I don't know if we actually have included him yet in our Premier League squad. If we haven't included Mattioni yet, then we can add a free-agent like Vlaar. Beyond that, any other changes would have to wait until the January transfer window.
As for Vlaar, I'd be OK with him bringing experience and cover at centre-back. Browning and Galloway are good, but are still relatively inexperienced. Others - like Pennington and Holgate - may get an occasional taste of first-team football (such as cup ties) , but aren't really ready for regular starting positions. Funes Mori - who also shows promise - is still inexperienced in the Premier League. Let's not forget that Stones - admittedly a gem - is still very young. We only really have Jagielka as a seasoned centre-back with Premier League experience.
Playing young centre-backs - like Browning and Galloway - at full-back is a tried and tested method of introducing them to first-team football so that they can experience the demands (physical, mental, technical and tactical) of the Premier League. Even Stones (and Jagielka) have had stints at full-back. Look back at our history and you'll find several examples of this approach with young defenders. Playing as part of a centre-back pairing - and working with the goalkeeper (especially our goalkeeper! ) - is imho the toughest challenge whatever physical and technical prowess a young player may possess. I accept that the way to gain experience is obviously to play first-team football, but a young player's development has to be carefully planned and monitored.
Final thought: I get the impression that RM and the coaches (and Joe Royle) really do think through their plans for development of every young player and it would appear that these younger players do generally appear to respond positively to what's asked of them.

Well said Cowpat. So I presume you'd value Vlaars experience? that he would bring. I agree, fine having plenty of young defenders' but we also need experience.

Listened to Joe royle on radio city last night talking about loaning the kids to the right club and how he goes round the country watching them to check their progress. It's a lot better for the kids to be playing lower league rather than U21's. We have a good youth set up and like most people would like to see more introduced so we can develop the side as a unit, (like utd's kids) but I suppose we have to trust that Bobby knows what he is doing.

As you mentioned about the squad size Sid, would you not rather the final place in the squad goes to a new no.10 or a striker than Vlaar, providing we don't sell anybody in January?

Blue Tommy: a number 10 or a striker would be good, but we'd surely have to pay well over the odds to get a good one in the January transfer window and I don't know if we've got the funds to do that. Interestingly (to me at least) is that RM has said that our next 12 Premier League fixtures will determine if we're going to challenge for European qualification. If we looked close to that come January, we might invest in some squad additions to get us "over the line", BUT those next 12 fixtures end after the close of the January transfer window, so a decision would have to be made after fewer of those fixtures. I reckon that it's more likely that 1 or 2 (anymore would surely be too disruptive) fringe players (McGeady? ) would be moved on and replacements brought in. As it stands, bringing in Vlaar mght still be good move although his injury record isn't that good - but then he'd only be cover and wouldn't play most matches.
Final thought: our first choice team is pretty good, but we have too many aging players, and we don't have quality in real depth, and some of our "flair" players are frustratingly inconsistent, and our youngsters (while promising) are still, learning how to play Premier League football. It's tantalisingly close, but RM's "golden generation" is clearly still being assembled/built and while those players need time (and the fans' patience! ) to develop, we will surely still need a core of experience on the field.
