09 Dec 2013 21:55:25
RM's comments indicate that the two players we might bring in are to cover for the long-term injured pair: Gibson and Kone.
RM's comments also indicate that Heitinga might leave, but that Jelavic might stay.
It'll be interesting to see if Duffy, Garbutt, and Lundstram have their loans extended - especially if they're still considered not quite ready for our first team.
For me, the situation with Vellios and Gueye is intriguing. Neither seems to be getting a sniff if the first team - and just seem to be here just in case we need to make up numbers on the subs bench in the event of first choice absentees.
I expect the reshaping of the squad to continue in January, but IMHO next Summer - when we could lose Barry, Lukaku, and Deulofeu - will be even more critical.
Add in the hoped-for progress of some of our U-18 and U-21 players and we could see a squad going forward that's a good combination of youth and experience.

Are there any posters (that's genuine - preferably registered to show authenticity - Everton fans) who are still unhappy that RM is our manager? I know it's early days, but could we have expected much better so far in terms of transfers, results, and the football we're playing?
Cowpat Sid

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i would be very surprised if there were any sid..

I knew all a long that Bobby was the man for us. I had faith in him from the very start. I wouldn't of picked anyone else. When everyone else doubted him, I said "come on lads, he's the man for us".

And then I remember what I really thought.

I, like most blues, was a little unsure on Bobby's appointment. I really wanted the lad from Porto. How wrong we were hey! He really is top class and we were wrong to judge so early. I like he could get any job in Europe to be fair, he's that good. I get the feeling he does his homework on every game. And i'm not talking about 20 minutes before the game on the bus but nights before and every little bit about the other team. That's what he gets paid to do and does it so well. He's perfect for us!

IMWT, COYB!

Everton Al.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree, Al. I was a bit pessimistic. I was a huge Moyes supporter & was devastated when he left for that lot, ( I really don't like Utd!). However, it didn't take long for me to change my view of Moyes - That sycophantic first press conference & then trying to buy our players, (glad that Fellaini's gone though). It was another one of those Tony Blair moments where someone you admire a lot let's you down.
Regular readers might remember that I always used to sign off with IM(&K)IT. I was going to give Roberto a full season before I did similar - in my view, trust is something that must be earned. Well, he's done that already for me. LOVING this season!

IR(&K)IT

Agree0 Disagree0

As someone who welcomed RM's appointment, I did ask the eds if they could make a list of all the pro/anti RM posters so we could say either "we told you so", or "we were wrong." Unfortunately it was never posted- shame on you ed25! Now 90% of posters always rated RM, as well as McCarthy and Barry!! Blue Lee

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im not into naming and shaming lee, and its a lot of hard work mate, we are all in this together...but using myself as an example, i wanted martinez, was indifferent about McCarthy, and a big fat no to barry, but thats why im a lowly editor and robbie is the second coming.. :)

I NEVER wanted RM in a million years, but I'll be the first to push my way to the front of the queue for my slice of humble pie.
The guy is a breath of fresh air, a "unique talent" and seems to be respected by the players.
Did anyone notice, that when we equalised for the second goal against the dark side, jags and a few others, ran to him for instructions instead of celebrating?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - we cant always be perfect doc, although i was a big advocate of bobbys, i never wanted barry or gibbo, who i descibed as has beens, who were looking for a big pay day!, which just goes to show that we all get it wrong at times mate..

I'm really unhappy. really unhappy we didn't get him earlier the man is a genius.

2 reasons why I am not 100% convinced Roberto Martinez knows a good striker. Aruna Kona and Mauro Boselli. Pair cost £12m. Class tactical manager and what he has done so far is nothing short of amazing. But you have to raise eyebrows at the price of those two players.

Just watched the u18s against brighton, have to say george green looks like he could be a top player.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree that Green looks very promising. Only question for me is whether or not he needs to develop more and then also be given a period on loan at a League1/2 (maybe Championship) club before getting an opportunity in our first team. Anyone else have an opinion?
KevinM

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - great talent kev, i would like to see him beef up a bit, and have a loan spell in the championship mate..

Long-term, I see Green taking on the Osman or Pienaar role in our team. That's unless he really beefs up and could play centre forward. It's early days and this is just me speculating. I'm content that RM and our coaching staff will get the best they can out of him and the rest of our U-18 and U-21 talent.

When Baines is fit, should he be first choice again?
a) Yes
b) No
c) Depends on Oviedos form
d) Don't know?

Thanks

I'm sorry but this one really is a no brainer. Leighton Baines is a World class left back, IMO the best lb in the premier league. Let's not forget he's still an Everton player wether he's been linked with a move away from our club or not. A modern professional who will only make our team stronger when he comes back from injury. Freekicks, corners, an awsome left foot. I for one can't wait to see him back in our first eleven and link up with the likes of Stephen Pienarr on our left side again.

lady gaga that's not fair, oviedo has been immense and i'm actually not scared when a winger runs past him unlike baines, oviedo has things baines doesn't have too, he has pace, can run past people and works his socks off non stop, taking him about after the way he's played would just be wrong, its like if aguero had been average all season and had 2 goals and he gets injured, they put jovetic as a starter and he gets 7 goals in 6 games, youd take him out just because aguero is a regular, if oviedo plays poor for a few games then fine but not the way he is playing at the moment, baines hasn't been at his best, despite his 2 free kicks against west ham his set pieces have been poor and his link up with pienaar hasn't been all that good, oviedo for me at the moment any day, I love baines but the way oviedo is playing he deserves to be starting every game

Mike-Ox Long

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm with Mike. Oviedo has been fantastic and to drop him now sends out completely the wrong message to the rest of squad. I hope, and think, that Bobby is a manager brave enough to continue picking someone in such great form against some of the biggest clubs in the country.

Baines needs to earn his place the same as everyone else and if that means he sits on the bench fr a while or demands a transfer then so be it.

Pod

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Baines has been brilliant for us for a few seasons now but I also think other teams are setting themselves up to make him less effective. Oviedo sometimes goes inside as well as outside whereas Baines nearly always goes outside. Pienaar seems to have improved with Oviedo in the last 2 games and is in much better form. They combine very well. I would say that until Oviedo gets injured or has a stinker, he has earned his place.

Hi fellow Blues
Frequent browser, but first-time poster.
I'm interested to know what you all think about maybe giving Lukaku a week off and resting him for the Fulham game in order to keep him fresh for the Christmas run-in. Or woould you just keep playing him given that we don't really have any viable replacements?
Cheers Blues

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - interesting one that BD9, i would personally start him, but if things are going well drag him off..

In the words of a certain KK, "I'd love it, just love it", if Jelavic could get a chance (probably off the bench) during the forthcoming home fixtures and score a goal or two. Lukaku is still first choice, but to have Jelavic get some form (confidence?) back would IMHO be a very nice bonus.
Cowpat Sid

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I think it is time to rest/drop Lukaku. He is young and in all fairness he has not IMO been up to much in the last 3 games, including the Stoke game where he scored. He is first choice and a clear first choice but I think it will be good for his hunger and his drive to drop him for Fulham. Play Jelavic or Mirallas up top with DelBoy on the right if you choose that option.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - he does so much work svenny that i think he will be a big miss, teams are so wary of him that they focus on him, leaving gaps in other areas, im not saying giving him a rest would not be a good thing, just that he brings more to the table than just his scoring mate..

Cheers for thoughts guys.
Its a conversation I was having with my mate, and we had different opinions - much like the replies from you.
I'm with you Ed - play him, and hopefully we can build up a big enough lead by half time/hour mark to give him a break.
Like you say Svenny, giving Jela 45/30mins and the chance to bag a goal or 2 could re-invigorate him, and he could be like a new signing himself for the crucial Christmas fixtures.

You didn't really have any chances, even your goal cam from a half chance and a decent strike from a Barcelona player and your next two best players are on loan from chelsea and man city. You think your one of the best teams in england. Your not even the best in your own city.

Is anyone else getting a little bit pissed off by the way other teams fans are saying that the only reason we are in the position we are in, is because of our loanees? Barry is more or less an Everton player anyway, our best player yesterday was Barkley who will hopefully be at the club for a long time, it's likely that Deulofeu will stay another season, and does any of the other team's fans give any consideration to Roberto Martinez!? He was the one who bought the players to the club in the first place ffs.

BitterBlue

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sorry but without Barry, Deulofeu and lukaku, you would not be in the same position. Nobody is saying Barkley is not your player and you have a good team as evident by beating united at OT, You do have a good manager. But without the loanees you would not be in the position you are in.

09 Dec 2013 15:36:42
i agree mate, barry is basically are player anyway, doofy loofy will be back but isn't even a starter and lukaku hasn't scored in two games but without them we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are now apparantly, even when we are finally getting recognized as top four contenders people still have to find a way to make up an excuse against us, quite annoying really

Mike-Ox Long

Agree0 Disagree0

Its because they have been in there cosy billionaire group but we have beat chelsea without lukaku we hammered Liverpool and got a draw we beat man u at cold Trafford and now gave arsenal a football lesson and they are quality so there scared ha we might want to join there cosy group . tp.

Agree0 Disagree0

How can you get p*ssed off by other fans saying if it wasn't for our loan signings we would not be where we are. Well they are absolutely right without them we would be 3 player light in the squad and IMO would probably be lower in the Prem. It doesn't matter what they think! The loan signings are playing for us and they are jealous. If you want to get into a slanging match just point out that they would not be where they are if they hadn't been able to spend millions of players on their squads. Oh and why not ask why there great clubs did not get the loan players we have maybe its because we are the "Peoples Club" with the "School of Science" and players just love being at EFC.

COYB IMWT

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with the last post but would go further and say the negativity over the loanees is based on fear. The wealthy clubs are now frightened of us and what we may achieve, so I take it as a compliment. A reverse compliment if you like. For the first time since the mid 80's we have an Everton side that plays without fear and bosses it's opponents. We are going to crash their party, break up their cosy little clique, and they don't like it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Its just testament to how we are playing. Let em moan like girls. Must irk them that Del boy was sent to us. They hand picked Everton under Roberto Martinez to progress their academy jewel. Now that's a compliment. didn't see them banging down the door of Brenda, Jose, Arsene, Andre or Manuel.

Probably not going to say anything that hasn't already been said, but absolutely delighted with the season so far. Was at the game yesterday, I thought we were superb against a very strong arsenal side. Good work rate, pace and passing. The new players Barry, McCarthy, Lukaku and Deulofeu have fitted in perfectly and have improved the team no end. For those who were wining and moaning about Martinez before he had managed a game for us, what's your opinion of him now? He has clearly made a hell of an impact, tactically astute, the players look like they are enjoying playing for him, Jags and Distin now pass the ball out of defence. Under Moyes it was always hoof it long and we then lost possession to quickly. Things are looking good for us blues. And the support in the away end yesterday was as always brilliant. I'm sick to death of the Moyes hating that is going on. Here is a man who built us up to be a regular challenger for European football but couldn't for whatever reason take us beyond that. And it's true he has been disrespectful to us and has had to lose his dignity by selling out to the corporation that is Manchester Utd but that was his choice and we should just let him get on with the disintegration of a once potentially great career. As for us let us be grateful this Christmas for 2 things. 1. Bill Kenwright for having the balls and the foresight to see what this team needed to go onto the next level. He had to shun the ever critical fandom and media concerns over his willingness to appoint a recently relegated manager to take us on to a higher level. But if ever there needed proof that he knows what he's doing then this appointment truly is it. 2. Roberto Martinez for making the transition seemless. For taking us onto new heights. For giving us a brand of football which I at thirty years of age have never seen at Goodison. For having the confidence to take on the top teams and outplay them and even when not outplaying them then out muscling them. This is the most exciting time to be an Evertonian that I have ever known. Let us revel in that this Christmas and forget the past.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Dec 2013 12:36:53
Good post mate, shame you never left your name though, I think we are starting to calm on Moyesee a bit now but you cannot blame anyone for being angry, he was as you stated disrespectful, I still don't want Man u to be successfull though as can't stand them anyway.

Bobby is just a fantastic manager and Mr Whelan (broken leg at Wembley) told us all this, my only worry now is will a top top club come in for him, he has shown he is tactically a genius, good thing though is that the guy is totally loyal to his teams, don't forget he turned down the Koppites to stay at Wigan lol.

We have our ups and downs like any club and at the minute we are doing great, long may it continue and hopefully we will get a chunk of money from somewhere because we are going to need it at the end of the season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have probably been the biggest hater of moyes on here, even when we were unfortunate to have the clown as our manager for 11 long, long years, I hated everything about him. (And the abuse I got over it was ridiculous, at least everyone now sees that I was right once again)

But I will now give him some credit. He once said he'd make Everton better than United. Well done moysie, you are a man of your word.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was fine with the low bids for Baines and Fellaini, essentially he was simply trying it on, trying to get the best deal for his club Man Utd. I even did not mind the load of bull about how he would let players go to Utd to further their careers if he was still Everton manager. He even kept some respect from me when he was open about the mentality his Everton sides had going to places like Old Trafford. However all of the respect is now gone following the "Everton don't even need a manager" remarks. The guy is desperate and his lack of respect at the job a fellow manager is doing speaks volumes about the man. All he needed to say was I think I left Everton in pretty good shape but I am very impressed with how Martinez is following on from me and he would have held my respect. He just couldn't though, he can't bare the fact that it is becoming apparent that it was not a case of him taking Everton as far as they could go but more a case of Everton taking him as far as he could go.
I am 30 as well and I have never felt more optimistic, more pride and more joy (i was at the 95 cup final) than watching us this season. Martinez in 15 league games has us playing better than Moyes managed in 11 years, he has us thinking we can win against anyone no matter what the score at the time is, something Moyes never managed to instill. Neither of these things are reasons not to respect Moyes, the first 6-7 years of his job were great in a difficult time, however the last 3 seasons were stale. My beef is that backhanded insult directly to Martinez and how he tried to play it off as a compliment. The guy is and will fail because he is negative and it now appears quite bitter as well.
Superb yesterday ignore everyone banging on about loan players, Barry is an Everton player and who knows re DelBoy he seems an prem rather than la liga player to me anyway (explosive) Bobby I had my doubts but my oh my they are long gone. No matter if we lose one you just know there will be a response.

Not like you to gloat Mike ha ha

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree. Moyes has made his bed, now let him lie in it ( no pun intended ). I really could'nt care less what he does or says as his links to our club are becoming more distant by the day. He had my full backing when he was our manager, as would anyone, even when the writing was on the wall from christmas onwards, but he now belongs in the past.
The Bill Kenwright detractors should give him immense credit, as he appointed the right manager at the time in Moyes and has appointed a manager in Roberto Martinez who is the right man to continue our evolution in the best Everton tradition. Something Moyes failed to comprehend. Gone are the days of the priority being to protect what you have when you cross the white line at 3 o'clock on a Saturday, with anything else being a bonus.
In just a few months Roberto has us playing our best football since the mid eighties and long may it continue.
By the way Degsybluenose, roberto will not leave for a top club as he is already with one, and he knows it. Martinez and Everton were quite simply made for each other.

cant drop ross against fulham mate as in can't drop him to the bench or drop him in the holding midfield role, parker (who is sh*te) and karagounis (who I actually rate) are both incredibly slow and ross' driving runs will cause lots of problems for them, I see osman going in the holding midfield role with barry, he may also give doofy loofy a start but he may also want mirallas tracking back on riise and kakcaniklic (catch ye knickers bitch) so its a tough one for bobby to choose but he will get it right and know what to do

IMHO it's nailed on that Osman will replace the suspended McCarthy in the starting lineup against Fulham.

Great performance from the lads. Proud to see an Everton side going for the three points right to end. Didn't see that when Moyes was on charge. We've played all the so-called title contenders now and for my money Man City is the best of the bunch. They are the only team to beat us and the only team that has outplayed us.

The city game imo rested on the no penalty decision when lakaku was thrown to the floor. At that stage the score was level, who knows Pegasus if we got that decision we may of ended up taking something from the game.Idont think they outplayed us really to be honest

Great performance yesterday, totally smacked the Arse in the first half and were unlucky not to be a goal up at half time. Allowed them back into the game after the break, but superb midfield work by McCarthy and Barry never allowed them to dominate.
We can prove ourselves as top 4 if you check the fixtures into the New Year. I just hope we stay injury free with key players. COYB

Just an observation.

Liverpool haven't played spurs, City or Chelsea yet, home or away. In fact they have still got 8 fixtures with the top six still to play. Whereas we have only 5.

Itll be interesting to see what the league looks like in a few weeks when these fixtures catch them up.

Regarding us, we are 2 points better off than this time last year. The key will be how well we do in the January transfer window. A little bit of business there could make all the difference come the last few weeks.

So whilst we are all delighted with our form thus far there are some important reminders from last season that we will need to do this year so as to keep the momentum.

Loving it so far

Lets not worry about them lot. There fans are more interested in how other teams do than their own.

We are 5 points better off than last season. Our record at this stage last season read 5-8-2=23 points. 7 draws and 7 wins thus far leaves us on 28 points, 5 points difference.

Sorry, I was going by the date of last weekend which means we played 16 games last year against 15 this year. So your right 23 v 28.

Ain't been on for a while, can't believe what a difference in play from moyes to Martinez. This looks like a team of the 80s. Are next 5 games are very win able, we could be in or around the top. Every player is performing and you can tell by the smiles on the face the difference in management.

"He has come a long way, " Martinez said in his post-match press conference.

"When he arrived in pre-season, I thought it would take him to around February to get used to his role as a team player and the physicality of the Premier League.

"He has surprised me and everyone that he is ready now and wants to help the team. He is incredibly arrogant in the right way, has belief in himself and his finish against Arsenal was exactly what he deserved."

Martinez added: "We have an agreement that it could be extended an extra year as long as the parent club do not need the player."

Just to clear things up, so if all goes well he will stay as barca will buy players, like they just about always do

To be honest I'm a little disappointed we didn't win that! Absolutely bossed it first half! They came back into it second half but I still think we were the better team! Great goal from Del Boy, lukaku looked a little bit off today! Ross was awesome! Keep playing like that and top 4 is a very realistic target!
