Just read this very good article on besic that was written before we signed him, thought I'd share: Before the World Cup started, Roberto Martinez – in one of his television roles – spoke about the competition and the scouting opportunity it presented for clubs. He was right, of course, because the tournament is essentially a big shop window of global talent.

Less than a month after that interview, Martinez is poised to add Bosnian holding-midfielder Muhamed Besic to his Everton squad for a paltry £4m. You can almost imagine the Spaniard sitting through the first half of Argentina against Bosnia, excusing himself at the interval, and getting straight on the phone to Bill Kenwright.

Like many people – myself included - he probably fell for Besic at first sight and recognised him as being a perfect-fit for the style of football he’s preaching at Goodison Park

While we should all look forward to seeing the 21 year-old in the Premier League, that anticipation should be tinged with frustration. The £4m fee makes an absolute mockery of some of the prices that are being paid for English talent. Besic isn’t just an aesthetically seductive player, and his game is actually far more blue-collared than his elegant passing and feathery touch suggests. He has spent part of his career at centre-back, and that’s clearly been an important stepping-stone in his development: his defensive-awareness is excellent and his ability to anticipate the ball and cover large areas of space in front of his centre-backs is exemplary.

So Everton are buying a holding-midfield who can both take the ball away from the opposition regularly and provide a steady stream of accurate distribution from deep-midfield? And they’re paying just £4m for him?

No, he may not be proven within the Premier League, but that in itself does not explain away the disparity in price between him and, say, Adam Lallana, or Jake Livermore. Besic is, to varying degrees, more talented than both, is younger than both, and has a sharper development curve than both. His price, for all intents and purposes, looks anomalous by comparison.

Not to pick on Livermore, but there isn’t a better example of the absurd home-grown tax than the £8m Hull City paid to Tottenham for him – really, how does Steve Bruce justify that? What is he getting beyond a very average set of attributes and a UK passport?

Here’s what happens next with Besic: he’ll be a revelation in England, and around October or November the ‘what a find’ narrative will gather pace. Six months further on, he’ll start to be linked with a big money move to a Champions League club and a gossip-mongering newspaper like The Mirror or The Mail will slap a £20m and above valuation on him.

And, for once, they’ll be right. There’s something very similar going on with Wilfried Bony at the moment. He scored goals for fun at Vitesse yet, when the time came to leave Holland, English clubs turned their noses up at the Eredivisie and refused to take a risk on him. Swansea didn’t, though, and are now on the verge of doubling their money inside twelve months.

Arsenal need a holding-midfielder, as do Manchester United, and as do Liverpool: they’ve all passed on Besic. Well done to Everton – and to Roberto Martinez for having conviction in his own judgement – but the clubs who have ignored him have made a very costly mistake.

This boy is going to be a star in the years to come, and the worst case scenario for Everton now is that they end up making an enormous profit on him in two or three years time.

International tournaments can create false economies and they can exaggerate the abilities of certain players – the Giovani Dos Santos problem – but Besic’s range of tools and abilities makes him close to a ‘can’t miss’ prospect.

Great, great business.

Normally stop reading half way through big posts especially Swans alcohol induced ones (sorry swan) but read all this and enjoyed it, great post mate

I remember reading this article about 2 weeks ago I think. It was actually having a go at the clubs like spurs and the like who just throw money away on tosh players when if they just did some decent scouting they would save a bit of money and get a decent player to boot.

And honestly after seeing him for 30 seconds on Sunday you would have to admit this scouting thing can look quite easy at times.

Have any of you seen the new mural being added to the outside of the main stand at goodison? It's a dedication to Roberto. Personally I think it brightens up the exterior, but was wondering whether anybody else thought it was a good addition.

Just got a sneaky feeling we still have a bit of cash knocking about? Can't see Martinez paying fees for players to go straight into the under 21's (no matter how small the fee) whilst we still need a couple of first teamers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Strange one Bobby sayin he only wants to sign a winger well what about David henen it hasn't been announced that he has signed yet think their will b more to follow

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Maybe he was talking first team and therefore Henen wouldn't come into the equation.

Agree0 Disagree0

He said one winger and david henen for under 21s

I for one won't be dissapointed if Atsu does not sign as I thought he was average at best at the World Cup. If McCarthy is off to utd as gutted as I would be about him leaving, I would ask for kagawa and Hernandez as part of the deal

04 Aug 2014 18:00:59
Why replace him with a striker who doesn't suit our system in any way and a midfielder who will play 3rd fiddle to barkley and naisy? that's like city selling aguero and buying carroll and nolan, it would be pointless

Agree0 Disagree0

We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I think kagawa and Hernandez would be quality signings for us

Just read an article on Naisey, not sure how old it is so apologies if I'm recycling old news.
Apparently he's bought a load of Everton match tickets and distributed them to various job centres across the city to give out to the long term unemployed who the job centres feel would benefit from them.
What a top bloke! Christmas dinner for the homeless and match tickets for the unemployed.
Any chance of him getting a mention in the New Year's honours list?

Great gesture from Ste Naismith bying tickets for the unemployed n homeless.
No doubt the usual posters will pipe up with, 'and so he should aswell as all the others, the money they're on and how they will be highly paid TV pundits when their career is over'.

Well done Naisy lad, a good honest hard working striker as he showed yesterday in a friendly.

This is one good guy, puts to shame the greedy ego nutter, who seem to think we should kiss there a.

Martinez has today said we want one more signing "before the Leicester game" as appose to one more before the end of the window. I have a feeling that once Van Gaal has decided who is surplus to requirements and perhaps how seeious their interest in McCarthy is we will have a busy deadline day again.

ref. pre season training.
Alan Ball once told me a funny story about pre season training at Everton.
After the last game of the season Catterick told Wilf Dixon to weigh all the players & make a note of their weight. On the 1st day of pre season training Wilf to weigh them again & they were find for ever pound they had put on. So Alan went into training a week early, & trained with plastic bin liner under his track suit, he said it didn't make him any fitter, but saved him a few quid!
He also told me that the player who always had to pay up was dear old Johnny Morrissey. I loved that lad, one of the best crossers of a ball I ever saw.
I think big Joe liked the crosses too.

a few people seem to be worried with the depth of our squad (kids on the bench yesterday ect. ) well from that team yesterday we have lukaku, mirralas, coleman, gibson, kone and oviedo all to return, plus galloway (i know he's only young but he will get a go) and 2 more signings, we will be fine

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We actually have a decent squad for once if we get a ST, LW and GK in
Howard, GK
Coleman, Hibbert, Browning
Jags, Distin, Stones, Alcaraz, Duffy
Baines, Oviedo, Garbutt
Mcarthy, Barry, Besic, Gibson, Ledson
Barkley, Naismith, Osman
Mirallas, Mcgeady,
Piennar, LW
Lukaku, ST, Kone

Try living down here, so many RS and Manchester United plastics it's unbelievable . Loads of whoppers who have "always" been Chelsea/City/ Whoever is doing well at the time .

Viva Everton!

Danny P

ps although I do find it funny whenever I see someone in an Everton shirt - I always think he/she is down on holiday/work and not a local like all the RS

After the match against Porto my assessment is you can still see rustiness in some of the players but we are also playing better opposition than we have at this stage of the pre-season than usual and it showed at times with them bossing the game for large periods although chances were few and far between. OK last season we played in the USA against both Real Madrid and Juventus but normally we have played 2nd and 3rd division teams until the last warm up match. I would have liked one more friendly in between the Leicester game and this but that's where we are. My stand outs were Besic who looked like he will be a real asset in the middle of the park and dare I say it may be a better option to start with McCarthy than Barry, and Naismith who was tireless in his running on his own upfront with a great 1st time finish for the goal. Low point was Robles need I say any more than he is the worst I've seen in a keepers jersey in a long time so we really need a better reserve keeper or he will cost us in some of our cup/europa league matches where he will undoubtedly play. Celta Vigo will be a good test midweek and is the time for any players hoping to put a marker down for the 1st match against Leicester, by which time we may have signed at least 2 more players fingers crossed.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - good post that mate..

Houghty I agree with you. Porto were the better team throughout although the fact that we were changing players every 20 minutes didn't help. I also thought Mo Besic looked great when he came on. Strong in the tackle and skilful with both feet taking people on. Robles looked dodgy in the second half, catching the ball once (which brought ironic applause from the Park End where I was) but still choosing to punch the ball needlessly. I was also disappointed with McGeady first half. He had chances to take on Martins Indi but didn't want to know. Great show from Leon Osman on his day - and he could have scored with that header late on. I was also expecting a bigger crowd this close to the start of the season.

Hi ed when I was last on I said we should buy bony as well as lukaku and some fans said we would end up like leeds and Portsmouth . Some fans won, t like this but I would sell mc, carthy and play besic in his position. Sell mc, carthy for 25mill and you have your money for bony. I would play both lukaku and bony together with mirallas on one wing and hopefully Atsu on the other.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i cant see bobby playing with 2 out and out strikers vinny, and i cant see either of them playing second fiddle to the other, for me macarthy is our engine room and allows barry the luxury of roaming, he is very important to the structure of the side imo mate..

You right about not liking the McCarthy being sold quote.Besic will be a long term replacement for Barry.McCarthy and besic are our engine room future.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sell Mccarthy? Unless he demanded to leave Vinny there is no way should we even contemplate the thought not even for a ridiculous offer imo.We keep hearing we don't have to sell anyone so why should we sell one of our best players to some other club to make them stronger. As ed025 said he is our engine room mate, you can build your team and style of play around a player like jimmy mac.

Agree0 Disagree0

And where would Barkley play there with Bony and Lukaku up front? Barkley has to sit behind Lukaku in a 4-2-3-1

Agree0 Disagree0

Blue Vinny you've got to be joking. JMcC is all about Everton's future alongside Coleman, Lukaku, Besic, Barkley and Stones. Why sell to a rival to make them better? I see Jimmy Mac as a future club captain orchestrating the team once Barry retires alongside Mo. To sell to the Mancs would send out a negative message to the rest of the PL about us, having announced Ross' new deal allongside Likaku and Besic's arrivals last week.

DannyP, any chance of you moving to Fleetwood to help me out with the cod heads?

Years ago I started a blue club in Port Dickson Malaysia. Went on holiday to see a mate of mine
who lived their. We went to the yacht club one night, I had my Everton shirt on & all the local lads loved it. we all got pissed & ended up singing
"we shall not be moved in Malay (I think)
