I know we have paid out a lot of money on Lukaku but the facts are he was here last year so was Barry we have lost Del Boy but Astu should replace him. So Besic is our only real addition and in numbers he replaces Traore.
I don't like huge squads and think all you do is waste money on players that never walk on the pitch but I think we are about 3 players short for the start of the season

Not a great game today but it's preseason what do you expect. Everyone was fairly average except Joel is the worst keeper I've ever seen, Mcgeady was anonymous till 80mins then was the best player on the pitch, Naismith put in a quality performance and Besic will be a fan favourite great signing. For them Oliver Torres (30) looked a player.

Despite all the excitement of last week's signings, I am worried on two counts. 1. We haven't increased the size or quality of the starting line-up - Barry and Lukaku were already there and we've added Bescic instead of Delafeou. 2. The quality of our pre-season preparation seems to be poor. Going to Thailand to play Leicester was clearly a commercial rather than a football decision. Meanwhile, all the four teams who finished above us last season are in the US taking part in a top class tournament. I think we need to bring in another 2 or 3 top quality players but that would now seem unlikely. Anyone else concerned?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Arsenal were in fact in London. But regardless of that, I think towards the latter stages of the season, your squad will be grateful they weren't dragged along to several foreign games like the other top teams

In regards to Martinez saying we will only bring 1 winger in, I still think we will make some deadline day signings, because he said he would like to bring one winger in before the start of the season, but the transfer window is still open after that, so hopefully during this time, he brings at least another player or two (preferably a striker) to help us deal with both domestic and European competitions. Based on today's showing, I think we still look light up front. Bešić for me was definitely a standout performer though.

Remi, Depay, Milner, Vlaar, Hernandez, Nani. Just a few names I wanted to offer in terms of others' opinions, including yours, Ed. cheers.

Liked Besic today, good feet. great brain, very calm. Naismith ran his heart out, but we need the Rom up front! Could not make the match today, but why oh why did I have to watch it on Arabic TV?, would have been happy to pay Everton TV.

The proceeds were for Charity so they wanted as many bums on seats as they could get. But the kopites couldn't make it :o)

My view of that game, even though it is a pre season game I think there's a few points thst can be taken,
Joel-couldnt catch a cold.
Tony-everton legend, wouldn't feel too confident with him starting a competitive match
Alcaraz- .
Jagielka-solid
Distin-big and solid as ever dealt with most things
Baines- he will always perform
Besic-he could be an Everton legend
Barry-today looked a little off the pace
McCarthy-continued where he left off
McGeady-few flashes. poor overall
Naismith-clever, good finish for the goal
Ossie- best Everton player, obviously
Barkley-will be vital this season

I thought we were poor. And judging by Bobbys interview after the match, I don't think he was too impressed either .

In fact I thought he looked quite worried. As I am after that performance with less than 2 weeks to the start of the season I get the impression that Bobby was expecting us to be a little further down the line in preparation.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mate I would say joel is probably one of the worse keepers we have ever had, and we've had some bad cats over the years with the likes of Dai the drop davies, Dave lawson, Paul Gerrard to name a few. I posted a while back that I was concerned that Bobby hadnt tried to buy a reliable experienced keeper as back up for Howard, because this lad doesn't cut the mustard and I doubt he ever will. One of the loudest cheers today was when he caught the ball from a header right at the end.

Agree0 Disagree0

I seen the interview toffee I got the same impression as you, he did seem concerned judging by the way he spoke and looked.

Agree0 Disagree0

Toffee ace, I thought we were very poor too, think we got taught a footballing lesson today really, everytime we had the ball they had 3 men on him and got it back almost immediately. Whereas we didn't really put pressure on them and let them boss us around and that kind of shows us the level we need to get to in order to compete at that level, I also believe bobby said 1 more signing.?! We need at least 2 a winger and a st, I will be worried if we go into the season with all these games with only Koné as backup especially as he, should he manage to stay fit will leave to the afcon for a month ish.

Ratings:howard-6, joel-4-god he's awful, please either sell him, bring in a new keeper or loan him out, hibbert-6.5-made some decent runs forward and showed hebis faster than indii, thank god we didn't buy him, jagielka-7.5-few misplaced passes but very solid and doing cruyff turns in his own box, alcaraz-6-few decent passes and a good tackle but nearly scored an own goal, lost the ball a few times and was beaten for pace numerous times, stones-6.5-typical stones performance, great lad, distin-7-showed no signs of slowing down, couple of good interceptions and put a few players on their asses, the tank, baines-6-decent link up early on but didn't really do anything, browning-6.5-got stuck in, seems very quick and was unlucky with his shot, osman-7-solid game from him, very unfortunate not to score, made up for him today, barry-7-typical solid barry performance, mccarthy-7-typical mccarthy display, besic-7.5-you sexy badass, ripped 2 players early on and got stuck in, went past people and has a great pass on him, looked very very good, barkley-6.5-looked lively and went past people, few bad passes but nothing to be worried about, mcgeady-6.5-wasnt happening for him, awful corners and didn't run at anyone, felt sorry for him, very frustrated with himself but worked hard and late on had a few good runs, unlucky today, pienaar-6.5-good link up and worked hard, naismith-8-great finish and worked his socks off, won headers and never gave in, oh how he has changed since el tactico took over, decent work out, very impressed with oliver torres (number 30) today, glad to see lukaku back, for a few seconds, thought it was a disgrace that alcaraz was completely ignored when his name was read out, yes he hasn't had the best of times but after all that talk about supporting whoever martinez brings in, I must of been the only person that clapped him, least support the lad, he wants to do well, just hasn't happened thus far, made up for ossie today, deserved it, besic looks boss and mcgeady no longer has tits, good day all round really, onto celta vigo!

Regardless of the game being a friendly and who didn't play and who did.I thought we looked really off the pace that I would of expected us to be at this stage with only two weeks to go till the season starts.Suppose that's what you get when youve only played Tanmere and flew half way around the world to take on leicester.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Aug 2014 19:13:13
Agreed mate, this should of been our last friendly, should of played tranmere then went abroad and had 3 or 4 games there then played porto, instead we are travelling everywhere

Agree0 Disagree0

I know we have players to come back like but I thought we looked woefully short up top. Imagine an injury to Mirallas and Lukaku? We'd be absolutely goosed. Our starting 11 is great, we need attacking quality ASAp imo.

I agree that we appear to be behind where we should be at this stage. We simply haven't played enough pre-season games. Most teams have played double what we have.

Hi Dtm, saw Ossie on tv say he was from Billinge, didn't spend much time their myself, just long enough to be born, & my mum to have her 21st birthday (God rest her)
Any other Evertonians born Billinge 1947?

Not a rumour as it is literally just my own thought but I have a sneaking suspicion that today's matchgoers may be treated to the unveiling of Christian Atsu

dont think he will mate, it will mean overshadowing Ossies testimonial, today is all about him

I pod, what's it got to do with you what name I use? & what's I pod for a name?

Anyway good luck to Ossie today, born in Billinge

As most of you know I am by no means leon osmans biggest fan but he deserves his day today, worked extremely hard to get where he is and has been a magnificent servent to the club, away from osman I am looking forward to hopefully seeing besic today, from porto, if they play, I will be keeping an eye on quintero, mangala and herrera, plus former everton targets christian tello and bruno martins indi, exciting game it looks like but most of all, I can't wait to be back inside goodison in preperation for the new season, good luck ossie, lads and let's get a win

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree Swan. Today is a special day for Leon Osman and is a testimony to his tremendous service and loyalty. Porto will be a stern test, but it's great to welcome back all the World Cup players after the summer and no better way to introduce the new signings. Let's hope for a decent crowd who'll get behind the team. I expect there to be a lot of changes throughout the game. COYB.

Agree0 Disagree0

As you know I am one of Ossie's backers and fans. Great to see some of the new signings, well Besic hopefully, but again, we've bought Lukaku, but can still only muster Naisy as only Striker, shows we still need to get more in or have we blown it all on Lukaku. Not long to start of season now, a lil bit worried that's all.

Agree0 Disagree0

We probably need another striker. But don't forget we have Lukaku, Naismith, Kone and at a push even Kevin Mirrallas can play up front. I have also pointed out in the past that Barkley has the attributes to play up front. Big strapping lad who can ghost past players. Good shot. Strong on the ball. I know he is our no10, but if the push comes to a shove, I would bet he could do a decent job. The squad is starting to look like one that can challenge.

Maybe its Rom and he hasn't had time yet?!
