Who else believes that Alan Stubbs is one of the leading (perhaps even the first choice) candidate to replace RM - albeit a couple of seasons earlier than expected and in far worse circumstances than expected?

Nope he's not for me.

02 Mar 2015 23:05:35
He probably is sid but it would be the first step on a slippery slope for me mate. We need experience and a big name for me but unfortunately as a club we just don't think big as the candidates on the list lasttime proved. Realistic targets should be billic and deboer but to be honest I think martinez will be here at the start of next season regardless of what happens between now and then anyway.

Agree2 Disagree1

03 Mar 2015 08:48:46
I really don't understand the obsession with old players coming back to manage the club, this is from the past and is proven not the way forward in this league today, it is no longer about a 'love or passion' for the club they once represented but about getting results, that is the foremost target and how they achieve and survive. The modern day manager is like a player in his own right, and seeks success and reward in the same way.

Wakka: I pretty much agree with most of your post

However the 'run through a brick wall' feeling for our beloved Everton Football Club, would be a great asset if it was applied by a tactical genius who could instill the aforementioned into the team etc.

Does he exist though?

Me personally :

Short term I prefer a tough 'Pulisesque' type to get this squad organised properly.

Long term just give me a manager who will adapt to what he has at his disposal and doesn't worry about the short ball or the long ball just play the right ball ffs.

To many on here want to look back and not forwards, and not only that it's not as if either Stubbs or Unsworth were great players either and can you imagine good players wanting to sign for them no me either. Just because Martinez is not working out means we to go for yard dogs who are more than likely fully entrenched with hoofball tactics, and this run through a brick wall mentality only Mourinho is capable of getting players do that not two plodders from Everton's not so glorious past.

Agree0 Disagree1

03 Mar 2015 14:42:40
Difficult to say who could come in, a lot of posters fancied Koeman but saints are now starting to falter and with no European commitments, Pulis short term but its back to Moyes style, managers like Mourinho great but will never happen, Pochitinho probably get axed end of season by Levy but realistically no one else at a prem league club I personally think as a long term replacement.
Ideally RM should eat some humble pie take a leaf from Brenda's book and readjust our playing style to suit the players!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Mar 2015 16:36:04
Long term new manager would prefer UK based, the main one for me would be Steve McClaren, who did well as assistant at Man U, did well at Middlesborough and Holland. Encourages good football. I think the only mistakes he made was referring to certain player as Stevie Gee and taking a brolly to a football match. As Derby are looking good for promotion probably wouldn't stand a chance to get him before season end anyway. Gary Monk at Swansea one to look at for future. A 'foreign' manager may well demand a large transfer kitty.
If new manager needed to get out of the mess to end of season, only Peter Reid comes to mind.

{Ed025's Note - reid would be my choice as well keenone..

It boils down to this: we're currently on 28 points and we need to get to the magical 40 point mark and hope that's good enough. That means another 12 points, which could be done with 4 wins. We've still to play four of the teams currently below us - QPR (away), Burnley (home), Aston Villa (away) and Sunderland (home). The points are vital, but so is the need to keep these sides below us. If we can't do that, then we don't deserve to stay up.
Does RM have it in him to make our team get those results? I wonder.
Ho hum.

{Ed025's Note - im sure you were thinking the same before the WBA and leicester games sid...once you are in the mire mate it gets harder, confidence gets lower and players are scared to make mistakes..

02 Mar 2015 22:40:00
Ed025: I know that I've turned completely about-face from being an avid RM supporter to now being a thoroughly disenchanted hyper-critic, but what is it that has turned you against him, as at one point I'm sure you also thought well of him?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i will be honest sid...i loved the guy..i have this terrible habit of seeing the best in people, i really believed his rhetoric and was a sucker for wanting us to be the school of science again, but even mugs like me can only take so much mate, it has got to a stage where i dont like watching the team, and i spend the whole game cursing and moaning incessantly, the enjoyment and magic has gone and its all down to this fraud of a manager..

02 Mar 2015 23:03:59
Ed025: It hurts to feel conned, doesn't it? To the credit to those posters who didn't want him from the start, they're not giving us (the former believers) the "I told you so" treatment" - they're hurting just like every Evertonian and only want the best for our beloved club.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Mar 2015 09:22:13
I think he swept in with his open and positive attitude that was a breath of fresh air from dour Dave, he then got us playing in a more confident style and all was rosy first season, however like teams that adapt this style they get found out, and as our season degraded he sailed on happily with the same style professing that things would improve, what has disappointed fans is that he has not realised the mistake and changed anything to get a different result!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Mar 2015 11:24:05
Good point that Sid, do you think it is because the majority of those who didn't want him in the first place were also taken in during last season?

The couple of lads I know who did not like the idea of him when he was appointed, changed their minds during last season, now they are just concerned about the club like the rest of us rather than doing the "I told you so" routine.

Even our most successful manager, Howard Kendall, needed players who truly believed in "Nil Satis Nisi Optimum". Players like Southall who demanded excellence from himself and others. Players like Sheedy who could effectively deliver their superior ability on the pitch. Players like Gray who would put their bodies on the line. Players like Reid who would drive the team with sheer grit and determination.
Is there any current player this season that has performed consistently of their best? More importantly imho is just how much of this under-performing is down to RM messing with tactics, formations (square pegs in round holes), killing confidence, selecting returning injured players too soon, not using the players' individual and collective strengths, etc., etc. It's no wonder that he now says that the players aren't enjoying the Premier League matches.
It's no good asking RM - and, indeed, BK and the board - to wake up and smell the coffee, as they've clearly lost their sense of smell because the fans know that too many performances at Goodison ths season have well and truly stunk the place out.

02 Mar 2015 22:59:24
Though it saddens me to say this, our club's primary (perhaps only) aim for for the remainder of this season MUST be to stay in the Premier League. The Europa League - no matter how tempting the rewards are - MUST not be allowed to adversely affect our fight against relegation. Whatever it takes to survive - even the most boring negative "parasite" football as long as it gets results and points, or a change of management, or the dropping of favourite players, or whatever else it takes - is all that now matters. Our club's very existence is at stake in my humble opinion, as relegation would be a financial disaster and we might be a long time outside the top tier.
Once we've survived this season, then let's have a major reassessment of where we stand at the end of the season and where we want to be and how we get there - with no avenue to be left unexplored.

I thought the game finished 0-0 though. The first goal was a corner, and as we all know, goals from corners don't count. And there wasn't at least 30 needless passes for Rosickys goal so that doesn't count either as it wasn't eye catching enough.

Well earned draw.

Next up is one of the parasites. Goals from headers don't count in that game and you aren't allowed to kick it over head height. See how Stoke deal with that. They don't stand a chance against our total football.

I was an early supporter of RM's appointment, but I am now a bitterly disenchanted critic.
I used to admire his positivity, but I now cringe at his excuses.
He's blamed the referees, the Europa League travelling, the players (for playing without intensity, for showing no intent, for not enjoying Premier League football), he's moved out staff who appear to have disagreed with him, he's dropped (or transferred) players who appear to have challenged his tactics. When is he going to take personal responsibility for the bad results and for the poor (in the fans' eyes if not his) performancss this season? He's the manager and must take resonsibility for building the squad, selecting the side, preparing the players technically, tactically, physically and mentally, for the organisation and formations of the team, and, ultimately, for the results. A little bit of humility and realism during his interviews would not go amiss at present in my humble opinion. Now, I've never been under pressure as a Premier League manager, so I'll not claim to be particularly insightful, but I (along with many other fans) can see the obvious faults. If he'd produced a team that had performed well this season and had better results, then he'd be lauded as the man to continue taking us forward - but he hasn't and so he isn't.
Even if we survive in the Premier League, I wonder if he's too far gone with most supporters to be anything but a manager waiting for the taxi to be called.
Ho hum.

I hope we do get a result against Stoke but if we don't, you have to wonder what is in our illustrious Chairmans thinking if Roberto does not sling his hook.

Agree2 Disagree1

02 Mar 2015 22:03:00
I have been a stanch supporter of Roberto, but not anymore yesterday's game wasn't the final straw, but the interview he gave in the Echo was, you know the bit he said he's not willing adapting his tactics no matter what the circumstances. That really riled me as it seems he's selfish, arrogant who puts his own needs before the clubs. He needs sacking now before he's allowed to do anymore damage.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - arrogant is the right word mike...i like you was taken in by the smooth talking persona of this charlatan and like many swallowed it hook line and sinker, he was the next coming, a man who with a good squad could achieve CL football on a regular basis...oh how wrong i was. the guy is a fraud, the nick leeson of football, so bill if your reading these pages....SACK THIS FRAUD NOW...relegation could see the demise of this wonderful club, we dont want to become the next leeds utd do we?, act now before its too late..

To use travelling and tiredness as excuses for poor performances is an absolute joke. They don't exactly travel tourist class, tolerate queues at check in to find a flight is 2 hrs late as Joe public who live in the real world have to put up with eg Thomson holidays etc. Other than to Russia and Eastern block countries most journey are within a few hours. Didn't hear travel complaints following the jolly break in Qatar recently.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

02 Mar 2015 12:56:29
So, on Wednesday we're away to Stoke City - who will surely be very challenging opponents and no doubt are what RM considers a "parasite" team. Is anyone really confident that we can get a result?
We then have a week-long break (due to the weekend being the FA Cup quarter-finals) until we play at home to Dynamo Kiev. That's plenty of time to rest and recover beforehand - and to let any niggling injuries settle down - and to prepare well for the fixture. Our Europa league results have been good, but these opponents are a cut above and will be tactically set up to handle us and we might not get the good fortune that we've enjoyed against previous European sides. Unless we are "phenomenal" or "perfect" - or just plain lucky - we might get taught a harsh lesson by these seasoned European campaigners.
Then comes the acid test imho: the Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. It's at home and follows a home Europa League match, so no excuse about travelling! However, our form in fixtures immediately after Europa League matches is poor and Newcastle are the sort of unpredictable side who could exploit that.
We then travel away to play Dynamo Kiev - whether the match is in Kiev or moved to Cyprus is still unclear - and we'll see just where our Europa League aspirations truly lie after that.
Then comes another test: the Premier League fixture away to QPR. I can hear the excuses already: the travelling back from Europe, the disappointment (possibly) of being eliminated from the Europa League, the tiredness of the players, the lack of "intensity" and no "intent" in our play, etc., etc., as another poor result (especially in a fixture immediately following a Europa League match) drops us deeper into the relegation dogfight. I'm thinking that we'll make them look like world-beaters - just like against so many inferior (on paper!) Premier League sides this season.
And all the time, RM stubbornly sticks to his footballing principles - even though our players haven't delivered results under them - while the "parasite" teams scrap for their lives and claw themselves to safety.
Europa League results have been the one good aspect of this season, but to place all of our hopes (especially the fantasy of a Champions League place) on that competition is sheer madness if our Premier League membership is not secured.
Football results are very often down to very small margins - a defensive error, a poor refereeing decision, a "worldie" from an opponent, etc., etc. - but a run of bad results and a pattern of poor performances are surely down to a manager not doing his job well enough in preparing (tactically, technically, physically and mentally) the squad, selecting the team, organising and motivating the players, and managing the game situation (e.g. adapting to the opposition's tactics, effective substitutions, etc., etc.). On top of all that, it's a results business and RM has therefore failed in the Premier League this season.
Such a pity, as I had high hopes when he took over and, even more so, high expectations after last season.
Ho hum.

hi Sid, you just described what Mr.Bean did with Wigan.
he put all his eggs in the FA Cup basket, & fair enough won it, BUT, got Wigan reagated.
his obsession with this Euro cup at the risk of relegation is jus pure stupidity.
Do him & Kenwright not look at the bottom of the Prem table?
Palace & West Brom now gone above us by 2 points

Looking back at this season we have only beaten West Brom, Burnley, Crystal Palace away. Queens Park Rangers, West Ham, Aston Villa at home. Only West Ham are in the top half and they had Sakho song Valencia and downing out injured. This season has been the worst I can remember in a long time. Zero entertainment in the league, it's a credit to our fans that we have filled the ground nearly every game. Quite clear that Bobby has prioritised Europe at the detriment of our league form. Would love to see us win in Europe but if we get into champion league we will be embarrassed by the likes of Real and Barcelona.

Here's a thought: if our Premier League campaign to date was being judged like a boxing match, would it be stopped now in order to avoid further punishment - not least to the long-suffering supporters? We could become the first team to be relegated by a Technical Knockout (TKO) decison! Then, like an over-the-top boxer, we'd be cannon fodder for the up-and-coming challengers - only ours would be lower-tier football clubs with ambition and attitude and a workable strategy, while we languish - punch drunk and forgotten and forlorn - as a former "big" club with its history a fading memory and its future a bleak prospect.

I was looking at the league tables with a villa fan in work today and we were going through teams who started the Premier league when it began and also teams that have had a run in the top flight. We looked at your Leeds, both Sheffield clubs, Coventry, Bolton, Swindon as he was under the impression that if both of us did go down we would bounce back up. Not many teams do and I don't believe we would if we fell. Could we be the next Leeds United. I hope not, but fear it is inevitable with this clown and his circus.

Just a thought let big Joe take over the rest of the season with Dunc. In a couple of weeks time if results don't improve Martinez will be saying " our main aim is to avoid relegation". This is failure as a manager and would result in the sack with no compensation in the real world.

1 win in 11 games in the league. that's the first thing to hit me as I woke this morning. Its a frightening statistic, a statistic that would see most managers relieved of there job. That deja vu feeling came to mind, while Wigan under Martinez where sweeping teams aside in the FA cup when they won it, they where in free fall in the leauge and on there way into the championship, alarm bells ringing yet?. While i'm clinging on to the belief that there are three teams worse than us and we will be safe, the stark reality is we could go down if Martinez doesn't pull his finger outta his ar*e and that doesn't even bare thinking about.

I get why everyone is complaining, but I for one think we should give bobby till next Christmas, the players can have some time off and bobby can have some thinking space, I don't think we should sack him from one although terrible season, right now look at Dortmund, they were bottom of the bundesliga not so long ago and their fans stuck by their manager and players and now they are 9 points off champions league, what I'm trying to say is we all know that bill isn't about to sack Bobby so there is no point kicking off, booing him or the players, we might as well get behind them and make sure we're safe then reassess everything in the summer

I am so so sad at the moment like the rest you. Also very angry that this farce is being allowed to continue. The situation is spiralling out of control and if Bill can't see it then maybe someone needs to tell him or show him. What other fans in the league would put up with this. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and I know i'm not alone in feeling desperate to get this man out of our club. Sorry clutching at straws, feeling very helpless here watching the club I've loved for over 30 years being slowly destroyed week after week.
