On the howard and joel situation. In my opinion joel should be first choice. Heres a few reasona why, height, at 6 foot 3 howard is a tad bit smaller than some top keepers like courtois, cech and neuer, joel is 6 foot 5, of course height isn't everything, look at buffon. But when it comes to crosses I always feel worried when howard comes out as a lot of strikers and defenders are bigger than him, of course he has the advantage of using his hands, but as its tim howards hands it isn't really an advantage. Joel Is 6 foot 5 and imp actually looks a lot larger than howard (bigger than 2 inches, don't go there), his arms are longer too. In his games, even vs newcastle (3-2) I thought joel looked very comfortable when it came to catching and punching. Handling, not a strong point of either but joel caught some solid shots in the derby, howard tends to punch them right into the danger zone. Like if there are 5 everton players spread out across the box and 1 opposition player he somehow always manages to give it to the opposing player. Joels catching isn't perfect but it is already level with howards or probably better and he is 12 years younger. 1 on 1s, I've said before howard is actually pretty good in 1 vs 1s, as long as the player doesn't shoot near post of course. I think he edges joel in this regard but it is something we haven't seen joel face a lot and even then howard isn't perfect at it. Reflexes, while howard makes the odd amazing save, it usually stems from him messing up in the first place. Remember Southampton this season? Great save but wouldn't of been in that position if he hadnt messed up to begin with. Joels reflexes against city for wigan were very good, again, not perfect, but he certainly is young enough to improve. Positioning, jesus howard is bad at this. The amount of times he is off his line and gets caught out due to long range shots. Whenever someone fires from 20 yards and over at howard my heart is in my mouth. Joel conceded a pretty silly long range goal vs Southampton but his positioning and wigan and in the games he's played here for me have shown he has very decent positioning. he's better here too mainly due to how bad howard is. Finally, distribution, joel wins this by a country mile. His ability to kick the ball out of his hands and at one of our players to start attacks is dare I say it, phenominal. Howard tends to throw and can't kick at all. Overall, joel is physically better and is better at starting attacks, his actual goalkeeping isn't perfect but is certainly better than howards. Of course this is just my opinion but I think with joels age, height along with everything else for me makes him our best keeper and certainly better than howard.

Hard to criticize that analysis Swan, really good post. Thought Joel was unlucky to lose the shirt after a really encouraging run.
Trouble is objectivity is one of the few long words RM hasn't mastered.

I think you are right Swan. All of us pretty much say that Joel was unlucky to lose his place after 3 pretty good performances. I have to say Howard was dreadful early season but did improve at the end. but surely Joel should be being blooded and given more playing time. He is the way forward. Howard is not going to get better that's for sure.

I agree with everything but your best point here is his positioning. He is caught so many times off his line it is ridiculous. He concedes so many goals from outside the box because is standing on or outside the six yard line. Our goalkeeping coaches need sacking for never pointing this out to him!

Think we should nickname Ed002 regarding these transfer rumours- bit like Moses, always taking us to the promised land!

Maybe he's already heard who RM is looking at & is sparing our feelings?! The names I've seen mentioned don't exactly fill me with joy.

Anything you can do about the Sky pop up as every time I log onto this page on my work laptop I get a restricted warning pop up as its gambling.

Cheers Degs

{Ed001's Note - I will get that sorted for you. It is not supposed to keep popping up like that, I thought we had got rid of it to be honest.}

The ads should be gone now. They are a pain.

Cheers Ed, it did go for a while mate but came back again

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - yes I know, a decision was made to give them another go without my knowledge, as was the initial decision to place them up! They do pay better than the other ads, but I think they are not worth having, no matter how much they pay. I absolutely hate them, and I am going to make sure I have more involvement in which ads go up from now on. There are too many on the sites as there is, I certainly don't want ones like that as well.}

26 May 2015 14:25:16
Thanks Ed001. I use my mobile to look at this site and can't seem to delete the stupid add for betting. I therefore have to leave the site and wait 'till I come home. Drives me nuts?

{Ed001's Note - is it still there now? It should be gone, sorry.}

26 May 2015 15:21:17
Gone for me thankfully, cheers eds.

{Ed001's Note - glad to hear it, it should never have come back in the first place, hateful ads they are.}

Anyone else read or heard the interview with martinez from various everton sites?. He answered a load of things, some I think were decent, others, not so much. He tried to defend putting howard straight back in and said it was good for joels confidence. that's weak. He said eto left as he wanted to play every game and he wouldn't get that here. I think that's another way of saying 'yeah, he p*ssed me off so I sold him'. He thinks kone deserves another year with pre season behind him (difficult with rastaman as he's a muslim). Somethings I did agree with was that if players don't want to play for everton then they can go. He said there is a campaign against alcaraz, as whenever he does well he gets no credit but when the team loses he is all to blame, true. He said players shouldn't be playing games if they are thinking of leaving (remember when moyes put lescott against arsenal when he wanted to go? Jesus). I don't know, he speaks so well and I want to trust him, yet, I can't help but feel wary of him. One interview doesn't change much but I don't believe he is the one to take us forward, he has too many favourites, seems to never get annoyed and is overly positive, to the point where it is creepy.

I agree Swan. I don't know how to take him any-more.

Recently he has changed his tune a little and started to be more critical in front of the camera's. He doesn't have to come out and slate everyone or even point out individuals but he has to admit to us that sometimes it wan't a good performance and what went wrong.

He is right to take the stance of, if you don't want to play then you won't play and you can go, as they will not give 100% and start a rot in the dressing room.

Players come and go all the time and as long as we get the going rate, I'm sure we can go out there and replace them. We don't have any players that are on par with a Messi or Ronaldo so they are no big loss.

As for Alcaraz, there is no witch hunt, he is not good enough for us. Martinez knows that but because of what has happened with Distin he had no one else to fill the CB position when we had injuries or suspensions.

I'm not having a go at Alcaraz but he just couldn't step up to our level and really he should have been let go for his own career last summer. A team like QPR or Burnley would have benefited with him this season.

So he said players should not be playing if they are wanting to leave? That's Garbutt on his way then, It does explain why he played Galloway instead of him against West Ham

He played Galloway to soften the blow of garbutt, who is prob are best left back imo and has 10 years on Baines which makes a massive difference
