Tonights defeat was mainly down to Moyes. His team selection was wrong full stop. 10 attempts at this cup you would think Moyes has learned by now you take it serious if you want to win it.We play our strongest 11 against Orient and make 6 changes against Leeds a better team??We shouldve put out a stronger 11 to start then bring on the young ones later in the game I am convinced we wouldve beaten them with a stronger 11. The defence was poor tonight, only Distin came away with any credit (very little), the midfield was woefully of the pace consequently anichebe never had a look in.
We couldnt cope with their physical approach (sometimes over physical) it seemed to me like everytime we put a couple of passes together we got fouled, they bullied us out of the game, and we let them. I am a Moyes fan but today I think he messed up and I'm gutted because that is a possible cup out the window, absolutely gutted.
Cant change it now and its not the end of the world, lets hope we keep our league form going and destroy southampton on saturday COYB - blue60

Maybe this is just what they needed too many players beleive the hype before anything has been achieved! I know we were bloody awful but they thought they just had to turn up tonight and a win was in the bag so hopefully a lesson has been learnt! Certain players were given a chance to stake a claim and blew it ! Surely everyone has had a rocket off moysie and also gave one to himself for that team selection but come Saturday they have learnt that victories have to be earnt and they turn over the saints and this sorry excuse for a performance can be wiped from our minds!stefc

So a true dose of reality fellow blues.
Oh well onwards and upwards. This should now focus us. No more slip ups. Prem league and fa cup. No more 2nd teams.
Hopefully a couple of spare pennys will be made available in jan just to give us that extra strength needed.
This exit could be a blessing in disguise. Not nice losing, especially to a side a league below, but what is done is done. If the management and players dwell on this too much it could effect us. Forget it, move on and beat Southampton Sat.

David Moyes and Bill Kenwright have shrewdly got a handful of top players - Jelavic, Baines, Fellaini, and (potentially) Mirallas - to our club with minimal net spending, but we just cannot afford the depth and strength of squad that Champions League clubs are able to build. Without the commercial income from a modern stadium and from regular European football, we'll necessarily fall short on the overall quality front. What we have in abundance (normally) is team spirit, organisation, and great support. When the first two go awry - the third never does - we struggle because IMHO we lack quality in depth. Once a blue, always a blue.

I am so glad i didnt watch that pile of crap. utter garbage. Why does moyes say he wants to win a trophy then goes and makes so many changes. does he ever learn. he done that against liverpool last season and we got hammered and he said after that match he made a mistake. so he goes and does it again. we wont win anything under him. i feel sorry for the supporters who travelled down. dont know what was worse the performance or the weather.

Andy {Ed025's Note - the weather...that was only pathetic..

Yes very poor performance .. But fellaini did not look arsed ... Junior smallest player on the pitch playing centre midfield looked like he had never played that position before .. we defo need another goalkeeper defence straight away had no confidence in him ... Heitenga captain never backed the players up once ... Enough said .. Sorry / piss wet through bluenose xx {Ed025's Note - my heart goes out to you mate..

I prefer Fellaini playing in the more forward role alongside Jelavic. I wish we'd got Vadis to play alongside Gibson in centre midfield. You can't top Pienaar on the left with Baines behind him. Mirallas on the right looks promising. As for the centre backs and right back, I'm not that confident about ours (unless Oviedo could play right back) and IMHO they all have a mistake in them. Howard looks like he's nearing his sell-by date. Osman and Naismith are honest/genuine performers, but the rest of our squad - especially the younger ones - haven't shown they can consistently deliver. I hope Barkley can mature into the great player we all wish for. The others - like George Green and Luke Garbutt - are still too inexperienced for now. Once a blue, always a blue.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree with a lot, but Howard was immense on saturday, best player on the pitch bar none. Howard is fine its Mucha that is useless, Howard needs competition from a young upstart.

What a carry on by some of you...

Coleman has been good in the PL this year. Coleman's 1 v 1 defending is not patient or strong enough by PL standards but he is the best RB fit at the moment. Gueye has never looked sub-standard in any of his appearances in the last 12 months and everyone on here was bagging Moyes earlier in the year for not playing the young guys (like Junior).

Naismith made the error to cost the 1st goal, nothing to do with Coleman, Junior, Gueye or Mucha. Mirallas was not that effective tonight, and he has been great in the last 2 games. Moyes was bagged for not playing Heitinga in the PL and to be honest, I thought he was very poor in both tonights and Saturdays game.

You want to finish top 4/6 and go deep in the cup competitions, you have to use your squad. Its not arrogance or disrespect, its reality and forward planning. You take a risk not playing the FORM team, but you take different risks by not using your squad. Bottom line is the players individually did not play well enough, made a crucial error early which set the tone of the game, and that is not the managers fault.

Maybe Junior is the only player we put out tonight that I could not confidently say is better than his Leeds equivalent. {Ed025's Note - thats a very fair and sensible post mate..

Believable6 Unbelievable0

I don't think we use the word bagging so much in England. I wish Timmy Cahill was still at Everton to translate.

NWS

Agree0 Disagree0

Naismith is championship quality at best

Agree0 Disagree0

Unfortunately fair and sensible isn't the going standard

Agree0 Disagree0

I think you!ll find it was junior who lost the ball in midfield - he was woeful and seemed to have an attitude with experienced players. Definitely way off the pace for me, needs to drop back in 21's. one crap night!

25 Sep 2012 22:05:23
I have to say that David Moyes got his team selection and tactics very very wrong tonight. You can not make six changes and expect to to win, some of those players made their debuts in the starting 11. Surely play your best side, get the goals then bring them on the debutees and give them confidence with playing in a winning side then develop them and get them ready for their debut. {Ed025's Note - good post that mate..

Players attitudes were awful tonight, always seem not to bother with the league cup

ToffeeMike {Ed025's Note - it did seem that way mike..

Believable4 Unbelievable0

I think moyes got it wrong tonight with his starting 11.should have started strong like against orient then made his subs.felt sorry for the young kid in midfield.he would have been better in a three.
coleman is one lucky lad to be playing professional football never mind premier league! gave away another needless and costly free kick.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think most of the lads were more intrested in not gettin an injury, and maybe thinking its only leeds we dont have to try as hard and still win. think we'll see a big improvement on saturday moyes wont let that happen again.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Sep 2012 21:53:59
why does moyes keep saying he wants to win something when he clearly is never gonna with these team selections and as for that defending ive seen better defending from 10 year olds in the local leagues totally gutted

If i was david moyes i would have pinned a photo of el hadji diouf and neil warnock on the changing room before kick off and asked do you want to lose to this pair of gobby persons? Well get out there and smash them off the pitch. Too many changes tonight with a sub standard performance from all involved. Note to moyes, we want a trophy any trophy, so pick strong starting line ups in all games. Cheers alastair

Diouf was quality tonight and got under evertons skin {Ed025's Note - he played well...but hes still a scum bag..

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Sep 2012 21:51:00
I really cant understand that selection and performance tonight!! Moyes says hes taking the cup seriously and then serves up a nightmare like that, Gueye was shocking at best, junior was a disgrace and im gonna pray every night now that tim howard doesnt get injured cause mucha should not be called a goal keeper. The rest wern't much better

There was an arogance about us tonight that i didnt like, we seemed to think we only had to show up, we were second best to everything and this is a very poor Leeds side, we made diof look like a world beater and resorted to lumping the ball 60 yards.

I really dont want to go into games this season wondering what Everton is gonna show up, thats a cup that we quite seriously could've won!

Such a disapointed toffee tonight

Kurajan {Ed025's Note - the long balls from defence were terrible to watch, it was wimbedonesque..very disappointed..

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Leeds fan here just wanna clear up a few things! Yeah it is a poor Leeds side (7 first team injured) but it only proves how poor Everton were when they had all that firepower on the bench! I've always liked Evertons attitude towards football and the only thing you have lacked in the past few years is depth in your squad but there's no point in having a good squad if there on the bench when you need them most! That was a great performance from all the Leeds players and I think we could have given any1 a good game last nite! As for diouf yeah a terrible past and demeanour but no denying, a good player!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yep Diouf did play well but the lad's a first class prick, a sewer rat is too kind. A despicable excuse for a human being.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh how bitter , diouf pure class ,get over it, and for a fraction of the money being paid to your so called prem stars, lol

j0hn80y

Believable4 Unbelievable2

25 Sep 2012 21:50:05
Oh well...normal service has been resumed. Our selected first-choice players have a poor game - perhaps they believed their own early-season publicity - and the others in the squad prove to be not good enough. I posted a few weeks ago that Leeds would be up for it and we'd see the effects of our games last Monday night and Saturday lunchtime. Our defence will have to be better against Southampton or they'll score.
Cowpat Sid {Ed025's Note - for me...the whole of the defence was clueless, and no one in midfield took a grip of the game...hurry back gibbo!..

Believable1 Unbelievable0

25 Sep 2012 21:49:25
After Steve Round saying that we were gonna be positive and look to win the cup I thought great great chance of winning some long sort after silverware. After that performance some players need to realise what it means to play for our beloved club. No desire, no will, no passion, no commitment. We will never improve unless the players look at themselves.

You cannot underestimate any team in football and that's what we did. All credit to Leeds though. I may be being overly negative after just one game, but our beloved club deserves 110% commitment everytime they pull on the blue shirt

Great game today, showed promise in the new lads!
Oviada looks good, quick, needs to start partnering Pienarr / Baines to get Experience.
Naismith needs a goal to get his Mojo on........

Junior looks out of his depth.

Leeds where always gonna come at us, they did a great job and played like we normally do.

I cannot think of a time, when we strung together 4 passes in a row during this game???

Gods Doctor {Ed025's Note - i was not very impressed with oviado to be honest, but it was his first full game, the rest need to have a good look at themselves..

Believable0 Unbelievable0

25 Sep 2012 22:06:34
Unfair to have a go at Junior. First half Fellaini and Naismith did him no favours. Neville was little better in the second half.
Would have preferred to see Vellios tonight as he has the motivation of something to prove, the way Moyes has treated him.
Hope this doesnt derail our season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Let's get this right, the only player to emerge from that shower with any credit was fellaini and he was nowhere near his best. That long sought after trophy will continue to be just that as long as Moyes keeps playing sunday league standard players on nights like this when you need some fight, commitment and desire and the only players to show those qualities were in a white shirt. Coleman, Gueye, and Junior simply not good enough and shouldn't be anywhere near our first team. Naismith also looked poor on this occasion. But in the end you have to congratulate Leeds as they wanted it a lot more than us and thoroughly deserved their victory.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure Oviedo was that great but he will be better for the run. Whole team playing crap doesn't help the younger guys getting support. When the entire team is looking off the pace the 'replacements' will always stand out.

The depth players cannot make up for the whole left by the senior/regular players, if they had that ability they would already be the senior players.

We're now in at evens for a top six spot in from 7-1 when we were rumoured (on here) to be signing Naismith - I've laid off my stake now so it's only upside if we do finish top 6 - and no loss if we don't! :) happy days!
