It would seem that many of us have become financial directors and instead of revelling in the euphoria of recent transfers and donning our napkins to commence the starter at the top table of England's elite clubs are instead becoming embroiled in what Mr Moshiri is prepared to spend on bringing quality to our club.

Many previous transfer windows have been spent bemoaning that we have failed to stump up the fees required to take us to the next level and now here we are listening to people bemoaning that we are spending too much on quality?

come on guys forget the fees, don't concern yourselves with what the club are prepared to pay. this is possibly the most up beat, positive closed season we have had since Lineker joined!

Enjoy what I hope is going to be one hell of a season. and the very start of things to come!

Great post Nev. Couldn't agree more mate. My internet usage has gone up ten fold this summer and I'm literally a giddy mess waiting for tomorrow's game.

Come on you blues!

Agree0 Disagree0

26 Jul 2017 10:48:21
It does not bother me the fee we pay for player, it's when I think can that fee get us a better player from some where else.

And I know we still need to convince any said player to join, also the proven premier experience part always seems to be in people's heads.

But no foreign player is proven till he moves to the prem, and my understanding is that SW was recruited for his skills in spotting these players that can adapt to the prem and the style of play chosen.

every fan is always going to have a say on fees, that's what makes the talk in the boozer on match day, chatting with family and friends, ridiculing other teams spending. In 1-3 months (depending on how well the player does haha) no one will even mention the fee. Unless it's that shower over the park who buy a donkey, never live it down this season if we get off to a flyer.

Almost forgot, we do keep reminding everyone about Colemans price tag hahaha.

I think most fans think they know a better player and I'm no different. What we fans don't take into consideration is the tactics and how these players fit into the managers way if thinking. Add into the personalities and ambition.

Take Hernandez. He stated it was his next contract that is his driving force. Arnoutovic broke his after a season. They're probably not the players you want at your club.

As for the money. It's anyone's guess what players are worth. All I know is we needed to get quality in through the door this summer early and we've done a great bit of business. A couple more and we could do something pretty special. Probably the best bit of business could be Sandro. Fingers crossed for a big season and it could look like a similar catch like Coleman!

This Sigi thing is getting boreing now, Swans ain't going to give up, pay the 50 mill and get it over with and move on to a striker target, no names, as plenty have been mentioned, we want a top 4 team, then we going to have to pay for quality, rant over COYB.

Being an old ( and yes grumpy ) supporter of Everton I can remember when the record transfer fees were less than what the average player now earns in a week ( and you wonder why I'm grumpy )

Anyways that little bit of trivia got me thinking about our previous managers and the faith shown in them by the club owners. I can not remember a time when our club has shown more faith in a manager than what they are now showing with RK. In that statement I do not just mean letting him have plenty of cash, but having the absolute faith in him to let him totally rebuild from the ground upwards. No other manager that I am aware of has been given as much freedom as he has.

It does please this Grumpy old git to see this and I only hope it does not turn into a 3 year joyride when RK leaves the nest he builds, we must not forget that the more successful we become the greater the chance he will be tempted to join a mega-bucks team. I only hope that the working ethos he has instilled into our club remains very much part of it for decades to come.

It's also way too hot here, next door's baby keeps crying . moan moan moan.

25 Jul 2017 18:22:18
Grumpytoffee: the arrival of Farhad Moshiri - plus the massive television income - means that we have the money to back RK in rebuilding the team. It was the same back in the 1960s when John Moores bankrolled Harry Catterick’s transfer spending, although HC also brought through a load of youth players to the first team.
Managers like Gordon Lee and Billy Bingham were given money to spend (e. g. record fees like Bob Latchford, etc. ) and even Moyes was trusted to spend whatever the club could spare.
The one manager who was really “backed” was Howard Kendall, who - in late 1983 - many fans vociferously wanted sacked. The chairman stuck with him and was rewarded by our mid-1980s success.
Pretty much every Everton manager gets about three years to get things right and they've all been given (comparitively speaking) equal backing (moral if not financial) . The only one to be fired (not left of own accord) in quick time was Mike Walker.

Looking at Europa league squad, I think we are still short in a number of areas and could do with 4 more signings:

Left sided CB (especially with Mori out - maybe Martins Indi? )
Left back (capable of challenging Baines)
Target man (Giroud would be the dream)
Lacey ST/ WG.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

25 Jul 2017 16:31:20
southern_toffee: Martina is a right-sided defender, so we probably could do with a left-sided centre-back - unless RK sticks with Besic.
It looks like Connolly is RK''s backup for Baines.
RK likes Calvert-Lewin, but we he needs time to develop as a Premier League target-man, so another recruit is likely.
A pacey forward would be nice, but RK has said he doesn't want a large squad and prefers to use the youngsters as backups - which surely means that Lookman and Dowell will get chances.

Agree0 Disagree3

25 Jul 2017 17:02:31
Martins Indi - Porto defender who did well at Stoke last season, not Cuco Martina.

Connolly as back up for Baines is ok.

Dowell has been excellent in pre season but doesn't have the pace to stretch a team. Also with him, Klaasen, Sandro, Rooney and Mirallas all capable of playing 10 just off the main striker I really don't think we need Gylfi (disregarding debates about price and quality)

Would much rather spend the 50mil on Giroud and Dembele.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jul 2017 17:19:21
I agree fellow Southern Toffee Martins Indi would be a great addition and I would keep an eye on the Ben Gibson situation.
For me LB should be fine for this season more likely to reviewed next season.
Giroud has to be the stand out striker, if the press are to be believed then perhaps some swap deal with Barkley might be on the cards.
If I was seeking a bit of pace I would also want some trickery perhaps a Ryad Mahrez, Ryad Boudebouz or Jonathan Vieira type?
This would be once Gylfi is signed and sealed
Just my thoughts but I don't flash the cash for the signings so will sit back and see what happens.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2017 17:51:54
Connolly is more like a left sided midfielder, even though his position is left back, if he is cover for Baines, I would be afraid, he got skinned a few times for England u20s and Everton U23s, hence not playing in the last few games for England U20s, Garbutt would have been a better option there, Connolly needs either another season on loan or left in the U23s but that's just my opinion and excellent analysis from a mate who follows Wigan Ath stating the same, Connolly played attacking down the left and played well but is no left back, switch the guy to left midfielder and you have a decent player there was his reply.

I think it will be a tough season for us especially the way City and Chelsea are improving with some good signings. I think the top 4 have now become the top 7 with Westham knocking heavily on the door.

grumpytogfee I disagree regarding West Ham I think they will finish top 10 but not get close to top 7 I will withhold judgment on Hart although I think his confidence is shot think Chico might struggle as they don't scream creativity since payed left and Arnie has 1 good game in 4 think they have improved but not enough to challenge top 7 this season.

Our squad for the Europa League third qualifying round has been registered and is listed on the UEFA website.
The List A part of the squad (which essentially are those players aged-over-21 PLUS any aged-under-21 players who haven't been with us for at least two years yet) comprises the following 21 players:
Pickford, Stekelenburg and Robles.
Baines, Keane, Williams, Jagielka, Martina and Holgate.
Schneiderlin, Barkley, Mirallas, Lennon, McCarthy, Gueye, Barry, Klaasen and Besic.
Sandro, Rooney, Calvert-Lewin and Lookman.
Obviously, injured players like Coleman, Funes Mori and Bolasie have been omitted for now.
Other players - like Davies, Dowell, Kenny, Connolly, etc. - are aged-under-21 AND have been with us for more than two years, so will no doubt be on the List B part of the squad, although that's not shown on the UEFA website at present.

Barkley has been included am I right in saying if he plays he will cup tied from the Europa league for any other team if he moves.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2017 18:05:55
BLUE79: Barkley (or any other player) being cup-tied for the Europa League (or the Champions League) depends on the particular set of circumstances.
These are covered by the “Regulations of the Europa League 2015-18 cycle: 2017/ 18 Season”, “Section VII - Player Registration”, “Articles 41, 42 and 43”, which are far too long to post here, but can be easily accessed on the UEFA website.
However, here’s part of the regulations that might help with a basic understanding:
“As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i. e. UEFA Champions
League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for more than one
club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally, however, a player who has
been fielded in the first, second, third qualifying round or the play-offs of the
UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to play in the UEFA
Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club as from the group stage. ”
The regulations are much more in-depth than this, so you'd have to read them all to be absolutely sure about a player’s eligibility. Happy reading!

I may also be wrong but I thought that the deals were kept separate on purpose, not that it matters today. going to have to pay the asking price if we want GS. Hope we do and then concentrate on a good quality defender/ s, not VVD, he's a carthorse.

Conte may be targetting Tom Davies, priceless gem and even Mr Abramovich couldn't afford this lad.

25 Jul 2017 11:18:06
Can only give Swansea credit I think sticking to their guns on their valuation an if we want GS we have to pay the asked price or move on to another target. I can't see us moving on after going to the reported 45. I honestly thought that would be accepted but clearly Swansea are in a position where if Everton walk away they are financially fine (I could be wrong) .

But they are playing us at our own game we never sell on the cheap so only but praise for Swansea in my eyes.

Hopefully GS in before first game of the season could do with his quality in our next 5 after our first game.

Everton the gear.

25 Jul 2017 10:51:01
As I said earlier, maybe we should have stuck to our guns with our £100m valuation of Rom? Probably going to end up paying the £50m but it needs doing today for everyone's sake. Hopefully another couple as RK has hinted at. Irrespective, Mr Moshiri, thank you for the best transfer window ever. I don't think he and Mr Walsh have received the credit they deserve.

Some media saying that United waved a £10 million fee for Rooney to get the Lukaku deal done. So maybe we did get the £100 mil we were looking for.

25 Jul 2017 12:22:11
I expect this to be done soon enough. We've negotiated well this summer and will do again with this deal. No need to get hung up on the figures. What he's worth to RK is what we'll pay whether it be 50, 60 or 100mil.

It will all be within what we can afford to pay or else we won't get him.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2017 12:36:31

Cheers billscocodiletears and Toffee Ace so i was not mistaken, he did cost £100m. ToffeeAL you need a fridge, i can't even afford one.

I don't mind Swansea playing hard ball and demanding a certain price for their player. In fact, me that's hung up on money, I respect it. The part that gets me is moving the goal posts. Seemingly they have uped the price from their original asking price.

The business I'm in and pretty much any business I've ever come across that is a big no no. Someone offers you the price you asked then you accept. Simple as. Works the other way too. When you offer a price you have to stand by it and do not kick on the deal (which is actually worse imho) .

If I was buying something and offered the asking price and then the seller suddenly decides to up the price after its been matched. I'd tell them to stick it up their you know what.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2017 20:56:12
Then again we are all individual creatures and have our own opinions. In the event of signing GS i will obviously support him. Also if he costs £50m and does the business with us next year I will gladly eat my fair share of humble pie with a tasty dollop of cream on top from ToffeeAL's new fridge.

Wasn't sissoko top drawer in the Euros? Maybe the pressure of living up to so much hype has got the better of him like so many before him. Maybe a nice stint at a smaller club would get him back to where he needs to be.

Just thinking. There's has to be at least 50,000 everton supporters right. If we chip in £200 each and write a cheque for 10 mill sent with a very, very nice letter to the board asking would they put another 10 mill towards getting Moussa Dembele. At 20 million he has to surely be a punt with over 30 goals a season. Even if he did 50% for us that's still 16 goals.

Please take a punt at Dembele.

I don't think he's good enough for the EPL yet. He's playing in probably the worst scottish league I've ever seen. He'd have been better staying at Fulham playing against better opposition. Right now he's picking up bad habits in a bad league.

We need a more experienced striker that's proven at a good level.

Personally think Perez would make an ideal partner for either Rooney or Sandro. Any combination of those three would give us goals. On another note, think we will end up paying what the Swans want for Gylfi. Whether that's right or wrong who knows. I suppose if City are paying 100m for two full backs, then 50 for a creative midfielder is fair?
