Right guys moving on from Sundays disaster to potentially the next one. My team for city game:
Robles (has to be) , Coleman, Jags, Mori and Baines. Barry and Stones holding mid. Delboy, Cleverly, Lennon centre mid. Rom up top. Not a pretty team I know, but we need grafters for this one and people who can attack at pace on the odd occasion we attack. Also think Stones might prove useful in mid, where if he does cock up someone's behind him.
Feel free to rip to bits, I have broad shoulders.

Wouldn't be my team Woburn but I bet if ten of us pick a team Martinez will select a different one.
My view on the game with City's defence we will get a few chances. We can't afford to be wasteful.

robles
coleman jags mori baines
barry cleverly
lennon peanuts oviado
lukaku

then bring on delboy and kone in the 2nd half change to a 442 if we need to chase the game.

If only we had someone who'd put in a shift and run his heart out and nick a goal from time to time. He'd be useful for Wednesday.

Heard Norwich have some Scottish forward, Steven something or other. Reckon we could sign him for £15m.

THE PENNY HAS DROPPED

I suspect like many yesterday was the final nail in the coffin for the Martinez out brigade.

Regardless of Wednesday we should be beating Swansea it's the bread and butter of football.

Cannot imagine there's many a manager out there who will come in January but anyone has to be better than Martinez at present.

Sure he's brought attacking football, often easy on the eye but more predictable and lethargic at present.

What we need is a Moyes / Matrinez hybrid who can add stability but still have an attacking presence.

I do think we should use a 4-4-2 formation though as Lukaku is isolated up top at times and in my opinion the more men we have further up the field the more we can play this tippy tspot malarkey further up the pitch as oppose to in our own box.

Thoughts?

{Ed025's Note - i dont know about a moyes / martinez hybid dixie, that would make us....miserably phenomenal... :)

Just listen to Stan on Talksport and various people that phoned in, they all say the same thing. This load of bovine droppings that Martinez comes out with that young players will learn from their mistakes in game time is absolute rubbish. The time for mistakes is on the training pitch. Also this tippy tappy pass out from the back at all costs causes exactly the sort of mistake engendered between Stones and Howard. I taught my son and now my grand son exactly what I was taught that playing as a full back you never ever pass the ball across your own box when the other team is pressing, either hit the ball long to your target man or straight down the line. Simple stuff that our buffoon believes he knows better.

On Stones

Sell him. £60million

There are several phenomena playing out in the Premier League right now, Everton are demonstrating these more than any team.

1. Ball playing centre halves. A sure way to fool any team into paying over the odds for a decent defender. We should sell Stones for £60million. Teams do not rely on their 'Rolls Royce' at the back for success, they bag you a few emphatic goals, are easy on the eye and on occasion give away a easy penalties.
Funes Mori and Jagielka are perfectly acceptable and a small part of the Stones cash could reinforce the back line. Its rather like the old adage, 'what do you buy someone who has everything? ' The only thing that would excite Barcelona fans defensively speaking is to buy a maverick centre half a la Stonesy. Sell, sell, sell.

2. Wandering/ Revert to the mean. Everton coast quite often. When the game begins and it is nil-nil the team go through the motions. The players seems bereft of ideas and ping the ball around merrily until one of two things happen. A) They concede and decide to chase the game, often successfully then at 1-1 its back to the beginning. B) They score, lead, and then roll the ball around nonchalantly until they concede again (its why over 80% of games have one goal in them) . The Man City win was the only mentally strong performance I've seen, the players looked like they knew they had a lead and wanted to keep it.

3. The Ross Question. Two step forwards, two steps back for this frustrating player. Remember Norwich almost 3 years ago, the Swansea last minute free kick, the Newcastle RotRovers. Great moments but ultimately he still gives the ball away cheaply. For RB it is his temperament that sadly is his downfall, he tries hard but loses belief.
He cannot quite believe he should be that good. Those who watch him week in, week out know that he isn't all that, his goals have not been spectacular this season and he is guilty of crab-football. I want him to succeed and never shout/ jeer at his mistakes, but I do fear he will peter out into an average footballer. I hope I am wrong and that quirky journalism isn't writing 'football obituaries' about him from Accrington Stanley in 6 years time.

Back Ross, Sell Stones and let have a game plan.
Focus Everton

Jack.

{Ed025's Note - thats a good read jack, you need to post more often mate..

25 Jan 2016 21:06:21
We won't sell Stones for less than 50m but I think the only
way anyone would actually pay it is if there were 2 or 3 clubs desperate to get him, but as he is clearly not the finished article I doubt whether there are. Also I think he is listening too much to all the praise he has had in the last 12 months and thinks he can play his way out of every situation. Even the likes of Moore, Beckenbauer and Maldini knew you sometimes had to just put your foot through it and get it cleared.

6 wins in 23 games (26% win) .
34 goals conceded in 23 games.
worst home defensive record in the premier league.

Controversial but I think if we had played two up front yesterday we would have won convincingly. Some of our best games this season have been Kone and Rom upfront as two targets for the wings. Swansea man marked Rom and kept their shape. We should always play two upfront at home against weeker opposition.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

25 Jan 2016 16:37:37
Secondly, don't always roll it out from the back! Mix it up, watch them out of shape and back peddling, let Rom run at the defence; he will get chances and he will be pulled back.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 14:22:26
The time has come to assess what direction Martinez is going to take us, everyone has had a say on Everton, and it's hard to ignore the fact that we are vastly under achieving under Roberto . The style of football he plays can. on its day beat anyone, but over 38 games he has well and truly been found out now, teams come to Goodison and happily let us have all the possession, then just pick us off, if Martinez is belligerent enough to carry on with his playing out from the back philosophy then he is a fool as we will be left with no option but to get rid, and if that happens then I hope we don't consider bringing Moyes back, Duncan Ferguson and Unsworth should be given a crack .

Believable1 Unbelievable3

Fergusson and unsworth? On what grounds should they be given a go? Because they played for Everton?

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 16:39:12
Why do so many want Moyes back when he left most agreed that he had taken Everton as far as he could and we needed a different coach in. Now I think maybe its the same for Martinez, its just its taken him 3 years whereas Moyes was 11.
Dunc and Rhino do not have the experience and I think its just to early for Stubbs.
we need an experienced manager with a winning mentality at the helm to sort the team out.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 17:15:51
Moyes did a v good job last time and made us into a top 6 club regularly from a relegation threatened team on a small budget. Yes he left in an unsavoury manner meeting whisky nose and trying to unsettle Baines and Fellaini. I don't think he had a fair crack of it at Utd to be honest and was always on to a loser taking over from someone of the calibre of AF. Look at LVG a renowned top coach who spent a lot more than Moyes did and has a worse record. Not sure what happened in Spain. But I was a big Moyes fan when he was with us and think with more money he would of broken into top 4. Football fans are fickle no matter what we hated Rooney when he left but a lot of blues would take him back now. I believe if David Moyes was at the helm again people would soon forgive him once he made us a stronger team and showed us how much the club actually mean to him. He is probably a better manager now than first time around and say he just went to Manchester and Spain for European work experience. I really can't see a way back for Roberto now and have given him my full support up until now. But the great Howard Kendall was on the edge in the eighties want he?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

25 Jan 2016 13:06:19
To be fair it was the right back who came on and had 2 clear goal scoring chances which is more than anyone else had! If Coleman put those chances away then that substitution would of been a stroke of genius!

Agree3 Disagree1

25 Jan 2016 13:28:09
I want Martinez gone but I don't think it was a bad sub either. Oviedo has no right foot at all and he wasn't contributing at the back or going forward. Frankly, having watched him yesterday I can't work out why he was ever considered to start at rightback. He can't play there full stop.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 13:54:08
Oviedo should not start there. That's the point he has no clue. Coleman from the start.

Surely if Coleman was fit enough to be on the bench and come on he was fit enougj to start? Why not give him an hour then bring on Bryan? .

25 Jan 2016 15:30:45
All very good in hindsight guys, if he started Coleman and he got injured then everybody would have slated him. Think he did the right thing in bringing him on for the last 30 mins and he actually had 2 sitters when he came on. Plenty do blame Martinez for but let's not pick holes in everything he does.

It's a fine line between being loyal and being weak.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

25 Jan 2016 14:29:12
Add to that his stubbornness and we start getting to the weakness you speak of. Yes Stones was a silly boy (as he has done a few times this season) for the pass but who else saw how slow Howard was to react and it was that delay that caused the penalty. He has been a good servant for us but Martinez obstinacy is costing us points and games.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 18:45:15
Also be interesting to know what the communication between Howard and Stones was if Howard did ask for it because he was slow. You would think with the vast amount of invaluable experience he brings to our young defence he would have told Stones to clear his lines. God I'm beginning to sound like some of the other moaning sods on here. Lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 12:24:45
Martinez moaning about the players being young and the crowd being on thier backs. Lukaku has over 100 top flight appearances, Barkley almost 100 and Stones has over 60, surely they have enough experience. It's not the crowds fault that Lukaku has an off day, or that Barkley can't hold onto the ball, or that Stones now seems to think he is better than he is. And most of all crowd not to blame for Martinez's defensive tactical failings!

Believable3 Unbelievable0

25 Jan 2016 13:59:15
I don't think the crowd want to get on the players backs, more they are frustrated with the managers selections etc. Start the next home game with Howard on the bench may provide a different atmosphere.

If anyone needs to get on anyone's back, then it is the board who should be on Martinez and remind him he said he would get the club into Champions League. This season has been a badly missed opportunity to achieve that goal.

I also feel the club will regret selling Naismith unless a better replacement is brought in during the next few days.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 13:19:14
I blame the pair of them for the goal PB78. Yes Stones back pass was poor, but you see a pass like that every couple of games from any player. Howard made 3 mistakes.

1) He hesitated before moving to the ball, this meant he got there late
2) He was not aware, I'm convinced he didn't see Ayew until the last minute
3) Ayew was going nowhere, why did he feel the need to take him out?

How many times has Howard given away penalties this season for being stupid when players going nowhere.

Also the Costa one against Chelsea, he made the wrong choice yet again.

Stones makes a mistake yesterday I agree, but it was an easy situation to recover.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 13:43:33
Stones I feel was more at fault than Howard. It was the wrong option. Apart from kicking it him himself it was the worst option Stones could of taken.

But the reaction Barry gives to what Howard does tells it all. Howard had no reason to be pleading to the ref. Should of went in with his hands.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jan 2016 13:57:00
People moaned at Stones doing Cruyff turns in his box, now we know why he did it, that's what happens when he gives it to Howard.

Howard steps back for no reason, sees Ayew, reacts late and decides to kick him for no reason.

Show me how Howard isn't at fault whatsoever? .

Agree0 Disagree1

25 Jan 2016 13:57:24
how could he go in with his hands? it was a pass back! all he had to do was use his body, hold ayew off and see it out for a corner at least, absolute no need to lunge in at him like that bad pass from stones but easily dealt with, howard is costing us so many points its torture, him and martinez need to do one before we get dragged into a relegation battle.

Unlike most people on this site, I've been a big fan of Martinez and have consistently said that he is building something very good. However after yesterday I am seriously questioning whether he has it in him to guide us up the table.

I think 1 of 2 things needs to happen:
1) Get Frank de Boer. The only manager available that would suit our team and style perfectly and be a significant upgrade on RM.
2) Sort out the backroom/ coaching staff. I'd be happy to keep RM as manager if he has a team behind him that can instil a bit more bite and defensive nous into the team. I am not convinced at all by Graeme Jones (especially compared to Alan Irvine) and think RM could be a real success if he has staff behind him to complement his attacking style.

On a side note, the idea of Moyes coming back is ridiculous - much better to be entertained and finish 10th than bored to death and finish 9th in my eyes.

Liverpool fan here! Just writing because I see a most of you asking for the manager to be sacked and thought I'd throw out an outsiders view on the situation!
I do agree with a lot that's been said on here. Results haven't been good enough, and while you are playing some attractive football with young talent, you seem unable to hold on to leads.
I understand the frustration with this, I am a Liverpool fan remember, but while you are falling well behind where you should be in the table, you're in a cup semi final!
Now Everton haven't won a trophy since 1995, far too long for a club of your stature, so personally if I was in your situation I'd prefer mid table and a trophy to getting into the Europa League!
Obviously you may not win the trophy, and obviously I hope you don't, but there's been a few posters talking about bringing Moyes back. Now that I don't understand!
I remember reading this site when Moyes was still in charge and everyone complained about him not taking the cups seriously, complaining about he putting out weakened teams in the league cup when it was your best chance at silverware.
To be honest, I'd stick with Martinez! I'd rather have a go at winning than sitting back and taking a draw. I'd rather play a strong team and go for a trophy than play a weakened team and bow out early!
But that's just a Liverpool supporters opinion!

I got well and truly shot down recently over my personal views, which is fine, this is an open forum for us all to air our ideas of how we think our Team should be playing. I now firmly believe that it is time to replace Martinez as he has no idea about how to set up a team to defend. The basics of football has always been to disposess the man with the ball. not allow him to run 40/ 50 yds into our half without a single tackle being made, match after match! Tired of the tecnno bullshit on the touchline with ipads etc. We should NEVER play with just one man up front at home, as this gives the opposition defenders more time to play the ball, not enough pressure and Lukaku has to cover more ground than he should need to. Ross Barkley needs to learn to tackle a lot more and his decision making is a joke at times. He believes all that the press have been saying about him this season, and has forgotten to actually go out and play. Stones is defo playing for a ticket now, and is deliberately annoying the crowd so that he can say "the fans drove him out". If Chelsea or anyone else for that matter want to pay £50m for him. then let him go, and if Lukakus' agent likes the idea of him playing for PSG then £65/ 70m will allow him to go also, because today they didn't look at all interested. Its like watching Wigan play at Goodison under this fella and cannot see us winning at City on Wednesday. Martinez does not seem to see in the teams performances, what the fans see. Too many players now have had their heads turned and if they don't want to play for Everton, then let them go. I agree with other remarks on here. Mark Hughes would be a good choice. Just my opinion folks.

I agree with all of that mate ecept the bit about Stones. tactically you are 100% right. We back off and back off. RM picks forwards for only their forward paly and not their ability to defend. All the pressure is on our defence. Deulofeu has no ideaa how to taackle. Barkley has no idea haw to jockey. Our defenders and in particularly Stones have too many decissons to make. And he is 22 years old so will make some mistakes. I actually agree with RM on that. but you are 100% right about our allowance of the opposition to run 40 or 50 yards unchallenged. Quote Bill Shankley, "The best form of defence is attaack". Our other big problem is that we have all these technically acceptable players he has signed and only a couple get into positions to put the ball in the oppositions goal. It is no surprise to me that we regularly have 60 to 70% possession in games but get about 2 or 3 shots on target in the 90 minutes. It is all well and good allowing the opposition the ball in their half. then when you finally close them down just pass it all over the pitch like a training session. from keeper to full back to center back to other full back to holding midfielder then back to centeer back then to winger and back to center back. Whilst we are messing round doing this, the opposition are organising themselvee to block out Lukaku because he is the only one who regularly puts the ball in the net. Jeez it is so obvious to me. I am not going to list them again, but all bar 2 players signed by RM have a very poor return rate for goals scored in the relative positions. Only Mori and Lukaku give a decent return. He just let one player go who gave a decent goals to minutes ratio. Apparently Mirallas is another he does not like. the only other player in our squad left with a good goal ratio. oh except Osman and he cannot be expected to even play these days. We need to sign some players who know where the goal is and stop leaking goals the other end due to tactical errors and players we are signing. Simple.

With 5 in midfield we should be able to carry one flair forward Deulofeu particularly as he is the biggest threat to the opposition and provides the final ball that can get us goals. Playing at home 5 in midfield to me is a mistake. the opposition just sit back and double team Rom and look to hit us on the break. Without a second striker we have very little chance of moving defenders around to cause problems. Additionally our defense pushes up too high and when we get caught our decision making usually gets punished. Yesterday with the exception of a couple of individuals we were shocking.

The reason we were steady under Moyes and not so steady under this fraud is simple. You did not play in a Moyes side unless you put in a shift, we were practically unbeatable at home under Moyes (except against our jinx side Arsenal that is) . I am old school and believe in hard work bringing rewards. Football is a competitive sport so for me I would rather win than lose or draw and if that means 1 - 0 and shut up shop then so be it.

You know I think the problem is we supporters have fallen for all the media hype around our players. When the reality is there not as good as we think.
Stones a 50m player, not really. Barkley a 50m player, no. Lukaku world class, no. They are good players in a poor team. But they certainly don't provide the drive to win games. Dare I say it but Suarez would have had a hatrick today with the balls Dela was putting in, because he is world class.
The reality is we are an average team with an average manager, and where we are in the league is where we should be. Results don't lie.

Totally agree think it's 3 wins at home out of 14 . That's relegation stuff never mind top 4 crap . If they want to go cash in and get Koeman or someone in to build a proper team with heart and desire.

With Martinez tactics not enabling us to hold onto leads, when we lose a game it makes it difficult to see where we are going to get the 11/ 12 points required for safety yes folks safety. This is supposedly the best Squad we have assembled for years and yet Mr Martinez has somehow turned us into a mediocre side incapable of getting into the top 8 never mind the Champions League. He is now more and more resorting to blaming the referee, the circumstances and anything and anyone rather than himself. And to make the situation worse we are falling further behind the Teams above us while the Teams behind us are gaining ground and soon will overtake us. Hate to say it but we are now Wigan mark 2 and could well finish 15th or lower.
