I was watching highlights of Georginio Wijnaldum's time at Newcastle and what jumped out at me was that on nearly every one of Wijnaldum's goals was on the end of a Moussa Sissoko pass. If I recall correctly even one of his penalty shots was from a foul on Sissoko in the box. This is the guy. Forget Witsel or Carvalho. Sissoko gets my vote. He does it all. I know he's been inconsistent, but I think even Messi would have some downs if he had to play on that Newcastle team. Thoughts? Who should they bring in as a 'Barry replacement'?

Newcastle looked dreadful in the 1st haalf of last season but in some games later on, they started to come together and nearly avoided relegation. They have some good players. The Premier League has never been tighter and top to bottom is a whiskers difference. Sometimes one player on form eg Hazzard at Chelsea can make all the difference. get 2 going well or 3 then you win the league. Vardy, Mahrez and Kante for example.

In your opinion Eds, what chance as a percentage would you's say we have of getting:

Witsel
Koulibaly.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I cannot answer such questions.}

24 Jul 2016 21:00:01
Ed's,
How exactly do these negotiations between clubs to buy a player work? Do we have a dedicated negotiating team talking to a number of clubs or is it a director? Are the talks done via skype or on a face to face basis? Also how much autonomy do the negotiators have? Do they have the clearance to say yes or no if they are close to a deal? Lastly how many negotiators does a typical team have or is it done via agencies?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - It varies club by club. Typically one person, cometimes with a lawyer will be responsible for most discussions. Some clubs have more than one person who gets involved. Some clubs it is a director and otehrs not - and sometimes a third party does critical negotiations or negotiations with specific clubs.+

24 Jul 2016 22:23:34
Many thanks Ed 002. Are you one of Evertons negotiators by any chance?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Jul 2016 03:00:30
From what Kenwrigh has said in the past I think he had a lot of involvement in negotiations for transfers in and out for Everton. I believe that Moshiri identified this as one area which needed improvement which is why Steve Walsh was brought in.

Agree1 Disagree0

25 Jul 2016 09:58:05
So will it be up to Steve Walsh to conduct the negotiations from here on in? if so surely it must all be done over the phone as we may be in contact with a number of clubs.

25 Jul 2016 12:36:38
I understand that BJU but if we are interested in a player and negotiating with his team in Russia, Who is negotiating with our interest in say Italy, Spain, France and other parts of the world. I was trying to find out how the whole process works. How is first contact made to let the club know we are interested? I am 100% sure that SW will not be jumping on a plane in the hope that a club will see him if he knocks on the door.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It doesn't work like that - Everton does not have teams of negotiators running around the world. And the negotiations don't involve people sitting at tables for weeks on end.

Clubs will typically informally ask an agent (a) if the player is going to be available, and (b) would the player consider a move to the club. There may be some broad discussion on the sort of deal that would be offered. If the answer is yes, it is then necessary for the club to approach the player's club to ask if they would be willing to sell and if they would grant permission to speak to a player's agent and possibly even the player about actually making a move. This will typically involve either broadly (through an offer) or actually agreeing a fee and responsibility for any significant costs (agents fees etc.). Once this has happened the club will be able to speak to the player's agent and perhaps the player himself to look at the package that will be involved. Many players are looked at and discussed at a high-level with agents and clubs; a subset of those have an offer placed; a subset of those involve discussions with the player's club; a subset of those involve discussions over terms, and; a subset of those go ahead.}

I love these types of stories. While coach feedback will obviously feed into management on terms of player analysis. There is not a chance that there is a big conference between the manager, scouting teams, all of the coaches, the cleaners and the staff over the road every time a potential player is identified.

Not sure what you are basing that view on Mushy. I hope you are right - but I was there yesterday and saw some of the old failings. We were lucky not to concede 2/ 3 tbh. But this is only pre season. Long way to go yet. Get Rom back in and a couple of significant signings and we make make an impression this season.

Being honest, I don't think there will be much movement. I think he will be looking to move people on first whilst looking at the team over the 4 games. Think the only position he will be sure on recruiting for at the minute is keeper as he didn't look happy with robles.

I agree if you go by what the press said 12-18 months ago we have got the strongest squad in our premier league history so with that let's add the perfect missing links to our already very good squad.

Agree0 Disagree1

24 Jul 2016 12:53:33
I feel we need to strengthen our core of the team. I would be happy if we bought Witsel and Carvalho for about £50m and sold McCarthy. Then sell Stones and include Bony in that deal, so we have a very good back up striker for Rom or we could have the option to go 2 up front. We should then look to buy a quality expensive CB like Koulibaly or Rugani, one of these 2 to fill the void left by Stones. For me jags, mori and one of those 2 would be strong enough and it could allow opportunities for the likes of Pennington who looked strong in the last few games at the back end of last season, Holagte, Galloway, Browning etc, to get some game time under there belts if called upon. I think Goalie wise we should be looking to buy Forster from Southampton as he's quality and Ron trusts him but surely Joel would then be moved on which I feel is unfair as he's done a good job in between the sticks, so I for one would not be surprised if no other goalie was brought in. This would then Improve the core of our team and make us a very strong outfit and teams would strugle to break us down next season. If I'm being greedy, I'd love another wide player who gives us a bit of an excitement going forward, Mata, depay, Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Yarmelenko spring to mind. We should also be looking to sell players like Kone, Niasse, McGeady, Oviedo to create squad space for the new signings. This could all be done within budget and with that kinda quality added to our already fairly strong squad, we could start dreaming of champo league football. Views?

24 Jul 2016 13:45:21
Is it just me or does anyone else think all this criticism of James McCarthy, and wanting to sell him, is completely unwarranted? The lad is everywhere on the pitch, every game he plays he gives 100%, even last season when he was injured he still wanted to play. Granted he didn't have a great season last term (who else did apart from Rom and Barry? ) but he worked his socks off whilst carrying injuries. He showed us what he was capable of in his first season when he was free of injury, and for me he was our player of the season behind Barry that year. He embodies everything that is Everton. His work rate, professionalism and honesty is something that all footballers should aspire to.

Couldn't agree more jd an spot on with the player's your proposing. I like Jimmy Mac but think there are better out there in that position. Think if we had witsel and carvalho either side of barkley we would also see a better player in ross as well.

Yes he works hard, gives 100% but is he good enough to be in a team trying to get into Europe and more? In my view he is just not top grade.

24 Jul 2016 16:09:38
Isn't there some statistic that we have lost a ridiculous low amount of games with McCarthy in the team. Coincidence or is he not getting the praise he should?

We'll find out this season IMHO.

Agree3 Disagree0

24 Jul 2016 16:18:15
Well we were trying to get into Europe the year we come 5th milomj and not only was he a regular, but the stand out player in most of his games. If you get rid of players like him, who will give their all for the club it's a recipe for disaster. I agree he hasn't got bags of ability but you don't know how he will fare under Koeman, as with many other players. I'm more than willing to give any of the players in this squad a chance under new management, especially the ones who want to be here and play for the badge. COYB!

24 Jul 2016 17:15:57
I like McCarthy but he is limited. Everybody remembers his last ditch tackles but this is usually him not marking people properly in the first place.

His passing is very limited and one dimensional and he deosnt offer anything other than a good tackle. We can't have two of this type of player on the pitch and would rather us get a more cultured midfielder that offer more going forward.

As an example Stones in this role would offer the tackle but also a driving force going forward. Its that type of player that clubs pay top dollar for, not a McCarthy.

Agree1 Disagree1

24 Jul 2016 19:09:04
BlueJohn every good team has a McCarthy type player. And anyone that has played football at a decent level will tell you how invaluable thay are.
McCarthy does a lot more than last ditch tackles to cover his non marking. He had a very poor season because of the high standards he has set since joining. But then the whole squad were poor last season.
I have no idea how or why you think Stones could do a better job, his positional play last season was nothing short of atrocious. So imagine how bad it would be if he was played out of pisition.
If McCarthy plays as well as we all know he can then he would be an automatic starter in most EPL teams.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jul 2016 22:30:42
Joe i'm not saying put Stones in his position. I'm saying someone who puts a tackle in but is also comfortable on the ball is a better player.

You show me one player in top football that has someone that only tackles but can't play as well.

Anyone who has played football will tell you that if you want to play at the top you can't be a one trick pony.

He has moments but if you can tell me a game he grabbed by the scruff of the neck, made a quality pass, a marauding run, a generals performance then I'll jump on your ship. I want a Xavi not a vinny jones.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Jul 2016 23:36:16
He is not the one at fault in marking its the system that was the problem he was having to mark 2 men most of the time. The guy was been looked at by arsenal and Spurs so anyone that thinks he's not good enough for our team needs to stop talking crap. I am sick of hearing he tackles but then passes 5 yards sideways I'm sorry should he tackle and run 70-80 yards beat 7 players and lob the keeper get a grip. The game of football has many different positions he is great at doing the things nobody cares about. That is not to say that they are unimportant it just means he ain't taking the ball down from 70 yards with one flick of the boot and then rifling in to the top corner. To you wannabe managers Stick to football manager.

It has stuck out so brightly that Tom Davies is a special talent since the Norwich game. He has everything in his locker from coolness on the ball, great control, passing vision, energy, intensity when needed, so skillful, a total footballer. I just hope that the first two games we've seen him play at right back aren't a sign of things to come, as it would be a total waste of talent sticking him there as cover for Coleman. He needs to be used where he can be having an effect on a game, as he did V Norwich where he virtually dictated the midfield. He needs to be used wisely however not overplayed as a first Season. The future is bright for Tom Davies, hopefully in the right place at the right times, please not at right back though!

Believable4 Unbelievable1

24 Jul 2016 14:05:56
It may be that he will be a sub during the season. If needed in midfield, he can certainly do buisness there, but RK will know that if anything happens to Coleman, then Davies can fit in at full back and do a job there. I fully expected to see him playing first team this season.

See we are linked with everyone again this morning Blues, you may know that i'm probably one of the most patient laid back posters on here but if we have not signed anyone by next Saturday i'm going to pop 💣💣💣💣💣

Good to see Ross tracking back and tackling yesterday, totally different manager now and even with the same players we will see a massive improvement, Ross will be awesome this season and Delboy up front, could be interesting if we play him off Lukaku, I've no idea what formation or team he will play, but the man is a legend so leave it woth Ron

How much longer do you think we will have to wait for stones and lukaku to decide where they're moving to. Do you think our own deals hinge on them moving first as we don't seem to be very active yet?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

24 Jul 2016 10:22:26
I think the club have decided to cash in on Stones as the money being spoken about is insane for a player who in reality has achieved nothing, and decent defenders are out there for the taking. I reckon they'll dig their heels in over Lukaku and price him out of a move. 20 goals a season strikers are as rare as hen's teeth and he would be the more difficult of the two to replace.

Morning fellow blues.

Just a few quick thoughts on the new stadium. I, like most blues would love a move to the docks. It could be a world class, iconic stadium. With the Liverpool Waters scheme by Peel Holdings with a reported £5bil I couldn't see any reason why they wouldn't want a world class stadium in and around their development. Also, the new Titanic hotel personally seems a little too far out of the way for a developer to send all that money on unless something special was happening. I can fully imagine that the hotel would be sold out around match days. Signature Living who own The Titanic Hotel (the company I work for do quite a bit of work for Signature Living) are a very good organisation and don't waste money with risky business ventures so hopefully they have known relatively early on and hence built a 4 star hotel 2 minutes walk from the proposed site.

Please let me know your thoughts and any other theories.

I am personally very excited by the new stadium and I'm searching for updates on a daily basis.

Thanks guys. COYB!

I mentioned the site at the waterfront when we announced Walton Park. It has a lot of scope for restaurants and bars BUT the council have said no retail.

That means the stadium would have to be multi functional and a kind of 365 day stadium facility. That may be subject to issues being raised by the Echo arena if it involves similar funtions to them.

The other site is different in that the scope is pretty much limitless. No restrictions on retail with an ability put anything on the table.

The cost of the waterfront will be a lot more plus peel will want a premium for the land and possible joint investment in the surrounding area.

The other site is more an investment in jobs and community.

Its a tough decision and one we should take our time with and for us to understand that what might look good on a postcard may not be right in the long term.

I know one game does not make a season, but already the signs were there. The system was obviously different. Quicker through the lines, but not getting caught out the back. Barkly looks like he might have shed a few kg. (I am certain he is a star) . (Not sure why Wiltshire would get a game before him) I also liked Mirrallas attitude. He is too good a player sitting on the bench. Del Boy up front with Lukaku might work. Tom Davies I thought was one the best of the young lads. It seems now very obvious that the players last season could not stand Martinez and didn't buy into his system. Martinez was a loser. Played in crap sides and sent one team down. Koeman was a winner, played in the highest quality of leagues, country, won everything and was universally known as one of the best players in the world at the time.

It was a good run out. But there were plenty of mistakes at the back, we just weren't punished for them. I think we need to do better at stopping crosses because we are second best to headers in the box and Robles is hesitant at coming for crosses.

The young kids did well and you're right there is definitely a change in attitude in the players that is translating to better performance on the pitch.

We desperately need attacking options on the left because we need to stretch the opposition more by switching sides regularly, and with Gibsons passing range I can see him used more this season if he stays fit.

I think we still need to recruit the whole spine of the team this window to be as competitive as we can, and someone on the left wing too. Just my thoughts.

Agree2 Disagree0

24 Jul 2016 09:45:33
I thought Grant was good as well. Very confident and wasnt afraid to support Barkley further forward as well.

I do think we need an alternative this season to Barry and McCarthy. Barry is too slow and will find it difficult to keep up with the pace of the game.

McCarthy gives his all but you've got to have more in your locker than a last ditch tackle. Only has a short pass and usually sideways and offer nothing at the top end of the pitch. We'll see what Koeman does with him this season.

Agree1 Disagree0

24 Jul 2016 09:55:43
Totally agree BlueJohnUns. I would expect Bessic to feature more and if we sign Witsel or another central midfielder with a goal or 2 in his locker, that will help. Barkley was over-used last season (s) and when his form dropped and he obviously needed a break, fans got on his back. Yes McCaarthy is over-rated in my opinion. He does have fantastic last ditch tackles. but what are center halves for? His passing ability is quite poor and so he nearly always plaays the simple option. And yes Barry has slowed down too much to be on Premier League pace. He does well to compensate, but anyone can see he is behind the faster top midfielders. eg Kante or even our noisey neighbours captain.
