There is an interesting article in the Mail comparing our position last season at Christmas to this. This season 5th level on points with Chelsea last season 5th level on points with Arsenal. We took 9 points from the other top 6 clubs both this year and last. Last year at this point we had scored 30 goals as opposed to 29 this year. The main difference is we are only 2 pts of the top as opposed to 12 last season though this is probably down to others inconsistency as much us our improvement. Now don't think I am knocking how we have performed this seasons but I think a lot of us have been looking through rose coloured glasses for a while now
and I am glad to hear RM saying there's a lot more work to be done and not getting as carried away as we are.

I agree mate. The Moyes haters would have you believe we have gone from crap to brilliant overnight. Interesting that we had scored one more goal at this point last season. without Lukaku as well! I think this season will be really interesting because all the top 8 or 9 teams are capable of taking points off each other. This will mean clubs like us and those around us have a way of sneaking up the league without being noticed too much. Very happy with RM and our progress, but worry what will happen if we do not replace Distin soon and secure Barry permanently. But biggest worry is how we replace Lukaku.

Just picked this up from the LFC Banter page which I thought I'd share with my fellow Blues : The last three times Liverpool were top of the League at Christmas (90/91, 96/97 and 08/09) they went on to lose it.
They'll bottle it again this year I reckon. Any thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not really bothered about there season we should only be looking at our team and matches it would be a plus if we can bring 3 + players in to strengthen the squad.

Very fine margins this year especially. Had we not conceded that late Sturridge goal in the derby the mighty Toffees would be sitting pretty at the top of the league. Still, they have to go to man city and chelski and we have a very winnable game against Sunderland and then a tricky tie against Southampton. I expect to be looking down at them when we meet next month.

Whilst I'm at it I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all Blues and Eds a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

May Everton continue to prosper under RM well into the new year

I am pleased as punch with the recent result. RM says it is significant. Yes, I think so too. how many campaigns come off the rails at games as these? I am so pleased that the players are adapting to meet the demands of the day, given I saw the miserable conditions of the weather in Swansea. Games to come we must win. COYMB's!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ye, well said Toronto. People often refer to those types of games as 'banana skins', but I'm delighted we prevailed in the end. If someone would have said to me at the start of the season, after 17 games you'll be 2 points off top I would have bitten their hand off.

I hope you continue your run into the new year and beyond, great example of what can be achieved without a billionaire master.
Great day to watch and great for football.
We have done well over the years paying for the stadium and still making the CL without any money from our quite billionaire American owner but you could put us in the shade this season if you finish top four.
Really hope you do, happy Christmas everyone

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers for that, Gunner. I've tipped your boys to win it all season, so if we can't, (a big ask, I know, but it goes to show how Robbie's changed things that we can even think about it!), I'd like to see you get it. Proper club, proper fans, try to play the right way - good luck.

Cheers gunner.you could ask your billionaire owner if he fancies wrapping up 20 million quid and putting it under the Everton Xmas tree lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

I could ask him Dentielad but he ain't much of a talker, but to be fair you properly got more chance of seeing any of his dosh than we have :-)
The only billionaire in football who won't spend :-)
Mind you I wouldn't want success the Chelski and city way to be honest, buying medals and trophies can't really feel that much of an achievement

Quick question Ed's. Whatever happened to the situation regarding Azerbaijani international Araz Abdullayev? I know he was an Everton player between 2011/12 and we loaned him out over two seasons for first team action (whilst he tried for a work permit) but do we still have a first option purchase if we do decide to re-sign him? Do Everton still hold him in high regard? I'm not 100% if he's actually still an Everton player. If anybody could shed some light I would be grateful.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what the situation is with him. I will try and find out.}

Bloody hell! Talk about a blast from the past. I remember him vaguely. I just thought we binned him off because he was crap

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi jack I believe there where a few issues regarding his permit, he needed to play more games for the international team but I believe we are still monitoring his development and may go back in for him when he is eligible

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers for the insight guys, I was curious as he was held in high regard and looked a genuine talent. I hope we are still scouting players like this, you never know someone as potent as Barkley could once again pop up out of nowhere, after all we're Everton aren't we?

Ed002 if you could give us all more info if/when you find out regarding Abdullayev that would be excellent.

Merry Christmas lads/gals/eds.

My feeling is we've already got the perfect Christmas present with the way Roberto has got the team playing. Christmas Eve and only 2 points off top spot and with home games coming up against Sunderland and Southampton.
Just hope the RS are humbled against Citeh on Boxing Day.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the eds and to all you Toffees. Onwards and upwards. COYB.

People keep talking about realistic points targets and what points we should be getting from each game. Why don't we all just take it one game at a time and aim to win EVERY game as we have done so far this season. If we win every game left this season we will win the league so surely that should be the aim.
