Osman was awful as were the two centre backs no more Passengers please roberto I have been critical of osman in the past but everyone must agree he is now totality out of his depth and if he bobby Carrys on playing Ozzie we will suffer he is getting totally overrun

{Ed025's Note - im with you richie, im a fan of leon, but today he was very poor..

Our lack of command in the air at the back, was there all last season, at 6.4 and with good reports about his perfomances on loan, it must be time to see if duffy can perform at the top level!

Today's game is proof we can't go the full season with only lukaku an out and out striker. Who would your money be on bobby bringing in eds?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i would be guessing kingy, but some of the guys looked tired to me..how the hell after 2 games i dont know mate but they did!..

Guess I really feel a little angry we threw that away lack of fitness is not really an excuse, very disappointed in jags he is off the pace since before the WC, really thought Naismith played well butrely showed we need another win striker! Time to fill in the missing links before the season closes

So lads, what happened against Arsenal? Couldn't watch the game. Did we fall apart, were they lucky, did they deserve to be back in the game?

Martinez says we effectively ran out of petrol after 80 minutes. Backs up the lack match fitness after a poor pre season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Roberto got his substitutions totally wrong! McGeady should have replaced Pienaar not Osman who was off the pace and totally ineffective.
Besic should also have been introduced to add bite and skill to our midfield when it is fairly obvious some of the team are still struggling for match fitness.
No point realising issues when the game is over.

Well back from a month sailing round the Med, and have to be honest don't see that we have really improved the squad. It's clear we still require a centre half, creative midfielder and another striker. Note to Robbie, Arsenal played an 19 year old in there back four today and he didn't let them down. Time for Stones I think.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If you're referring to chambers then I have to disagree, played Coleman on for the first almost let Mirallas through and looked very rash.

As rubbish as I feel I think there is a negative and a positive from that match,
Negative- we're not fit enough
Positive- we'll get fitter, let's move on, no point dwelling in the past, looked great first half and tired hugely, better times are ahead, let's just hope they arrive sooner rather than later

Well I tell you what if anybody is getting a new contract I hope it's Naismith the lad gives everything for the shirt, about the result I'm not even going to comment because if Martinez can't see where he went wrong in that second half well then we are in trouble serious trouble, but I trust in him to get it right again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The most improved player imo.he is like tim cahill.how many headers did he win against 6ft 6inch mertasaker.wears his heart on his sleeve and will never quit.imo he is actually one of the best thinkers in the top flight and his finishing has a finesse about it.he has stepped up to the mark and won't let us down.motm for me.

Come on steph the are a really good team

And so are we shaky

We got out of jail today and are very lucky this game wasn't a little later in the season as we'd have been finished off long before Giroud got on the pitch.
I know your all gutted tonight and understandably so but your going to be well in the hunt for top four place in April and May.
Good luck for the rest of the season, well apart from when you come to us of course, I think we need it more than than you

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hell of a game gunner.we passed you off the pitch in first half but it was arsenals game in the second half.i enjoyed it apart from result but end of the day your no mugs so well done and good luck for the season

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers mate a game of two halves today well done and good luck for the rest of the season.

Why are Besic and Atsu not being played. I though their apparent attacking nature would suit this game against Arsenal? I think their presence on the pitch would be to our benefit and thought one would replace Pienaar.

Atsu will now not play until middle of september due to ineligibility against parent club next week then the international break so when is he going to get any match practice with the squad we might not see him until October imo.

Not doing ratings, feel sick after that, if it was liverpool, city or chelsea 2-0 up at half time they would of won 6-7 nil, but because we are gutless we fail, yet again, jagielka and distins partnership is becoming most taxing, we are too nice and lack a killer instinct which seperates us from the actual top four contenders, osman should never have been brought on, i'm not targeting him, he wasnt bad but besic should of come on, even if it meant atsu had to wait longer for his debut, we needed a player who wouldn't sit back, positives? Today proves arsenal still have awful fans that only sing near the end, other positives? Wilshere was scared sh*tless by mccarthy today, ozil proved my point of how overrated he is, I will be shocked if he is still in the prem in two years time, we need to think about our defence, we need centre backs, jags and distin are starting to regress and will need replacing, stones is there, alcaraz isn't a spring chicken, time for tyias browning to show his worth

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Got to agree with the back 2, you can excuse distin to a degree with his age but jags as been awful for some time now.I would look at Micah richards to replace jags as I can't remember his last good game.

Agree0 Disagree0

It makes you sick, the problem is that with ten minutes to go sitting here in the US you just know that they are going to score. Why doesn't Martinez see the same, Stones should have been brought on and given us some stability in the middle of defense. Neither Distin or Jags can defend crosses. Time for one or both to be replaced if we have any chance at the top five again.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to totally agree! All the substitutions were shocking. Barry had an excellent game but you could see he was flagging in the last 20 minutes.
Got to say I'm loving Naismith

.I've got a horrible feeling about this season. our defending this far has been shocking just as Wigans was under Martinez, I hope this is a blip or else we'll struggle to make top 10 at this rate. personally, I think Jags doesn't fit into bobbys system & cannot pass or defend anymore & I also think it's the end of Distin - this season is 1 too far for him I'm afraid, to be fair to Sylvain he's been a great servant to the club it's not his fault he's late 30s & has slowed down so much it happens to us all eventually. Time to play young Stones & buy another good centre back. um, also where was Besic tonight?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree Zack. 2 matches confirmed jags not yet rebound from his wc. nightmare. His positioning and participating were poor. Distin look so old this season. I guess Brandan Galloway is planned to replace him in future. But we need now so who?

I'm so disappointed, we were brilliant first half and woeful second half. Caught sleeping at the back again. It's not good enough for a team wanting to finish in the top 4 we need to be able to see a game out until the end. Gutted because of the lapses of concentration and the inability to get up the pitch during the second half, playing defensively. We desperately need another CB IMO

Believable0 Unbelievable0

23 Aug 2014 19:36:51
Think Bobby got it wrong with his substitutions tonight. Gooners were clearly getting on top and we were running on fumes in centre mid and defence. Why didn't we just sure it up with Besic? McGeady and Atsu are luxury players not disciplined when you're under the cosh.

Sure we'll bounce back but should never have let that slip.

we need to learn when we have the 3 points in the bag and hold on to what we have.

Twice this season and enough times to cost us 4th place last season we've tossed 2-3 points away.

what's the point in having defenders on the bench if we don't use them

Does anyone know what happens if a prem team wins the Europa league (us fingers crossed!) and finishes outside of the top 4? Would the team in 4th miss out on champs league or would an extra place be given? imagine taking the place from the rs! icing on the cake!
thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - No, 5 teams would enter the CL.}

However, if English teams won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and the UEFA Europa League (UEL), but both finished outside the top four of the English Premier League (EPL), then both would get a UCL spot alongside the EPL top three, while the fourth-placed EPL team would only get a UEL spot. England can only have a maximum of 5 UCL spots - and normally only has 4 - and only gets 3 UEL spots whatever the scenario.
So, in the above scenario, if other (different) teams won the FA Cup and the Capital Cup, they'd get 2 of the UEL spots alongside the fourth-placed EPL team - and finishing fifth wouldn't get any European football!
