I don't know what the board are really thinking about Koeman, but as discussed below, it's not easy to see who would be an ideal replacement if he were to go now. None of the names mentioned so far are great choices. It seems the fans at least have not learned the lessons of our last two appointments and are still looking only at the EPL for managerial successors, except for completely unrealistic names like Ancelotti? There are some great up and coming managers round Europe at 'smaller' clubs than Everton, though we may have to wait until the end of the season for the best. The key question is what a manager gets out of the players at their disposal. Koeman has never in nearly 18 years overachieved, with the possible slight exception of Southampton. Harry Redknapp could win the Bundesliga with Bayern, we don't need Ancelotti. Not many managers could win the French Cup with Guingamp, get Monchengladbach, Nice or Leipzig into the Champions League, take Atalanta into Europe or finish 4th with Hoffenheim. We should be looking at Nagelsmann and Gasperini; the boat might have sailed on Favre, Hasenhuttl and Gourvennec. There are at least six richer clubs than us in this league so we need someone with a record of overachieving. Someone with some tactical awareness and some social skills would be good too. If it gets too far into a relegation battle, RK might have to go, but it would be very short sighted to sack him only to get in another manager who won't take us anywhere. I would go for Unsworth if we need a caretaker, but long-term, we need someone with a proven record in one of the top five leagues.

Youre right about looking at managers with a proven track record
Its hard to believe that we picked Koeman for any other reason than he is a well known name.

16 Oct 2017 19:25:00
Good post that.

What I would say is that I thought Koeman was one of those managers before he came to us. He did a fantastic job with Southampton, particularly when they sold all their decent players every season.

I thought he'd treat coming to us as his next step and an audition for Barcelona, so I really do not understand where it's all gone wrong. Surely he must realise he's going to get sacked if it doesn't turn round, while at the same time realising it's not going to turn round if he doesn't do something different. It's almost like he wants to get sacked.

Southamptons set up with there director of football is what's working for them, don't they pick they coach to play the way Les Reed wants the team to play. Outside of Poch has anyone who left there made an impact anywhere else?

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Oct 2017 12:55:36
True enough. That's why it's ideal to look for someone who's been able to overachieve at more than one club. There are no guarantees. Rafa hasn't overachieved at Newcastle: they should have won the Championship last season. He was rubbish at Inter, where they were way off the pace having won the treble the previous season under Mourinho. He's always ready to blame the club for his own failings. I'm not saying he hasn't achieved success - of course he has, but so he should have with the teams he's managed and he's often spent a ton of money on awful players and still underachieved. I would be happy to take a risk trying to find the next Pochettino, Mourinho or Jardim if the best alternative was taking a risk on Rafa, especially given the history. Finding someone who can improve us relative to what we can spend is the only way we break into the top 6.

** managerial record did not inspire me.
We have made a huge mistake here and we have never looked so bad.
I don't even know what the solution coyld be but i firmly believe that we fail when we appoint outside of the club.
We are a club that has a great tradition and we need someone that understands what it means to put on that blue shirt.
This losing streak against the "top 6" is embarrassing. We should be competing and challenging for honours. We are even further away from doing so than we were 3/ 4 seasons ago.
140m spent and we have gone worryingly worse.
We are Everton fc and this needs rooting out immediately. We need someone wirj.

Im not sure what is happening behind the scenes but watching us right now is very worrying.
The team itself has no idea how to play together.
It looks like they have simply given up.
I don't believe koeman can turn this round.
I honestly think he is out of his depth.
I didn't want koeman in the first place as his mangerial recird.

Players playing out of position, negative tactics?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

16 Oct 2017 18:06:54
I think we can all talk about who should play and tactics all we want but at the end of the day this is all down to confidence and it’s clear its rock bottom these are good players and yes one or two may be playing out of position but there not doing the basics right, watched MOTD last night and Keown showed a couple of clips where he said the pass should of been there and it was simple passes but would of been space to attack but instead just played 5-10yards back or sideways, only thing I would like to see is rotating Guye and Sniederlen with Davis or Klassen we don’t need 2 players that don’t really give us a attacking threat. Team for Lyon

Pickford

Keane. Jagielka

Guye
Kenny. Baines
Davis. Klassen.

Sigurdsson

Rooney. Calvert-Lewin.

Having missed the game in my home town as I'm on holiday, I've just watched the highlights and thought I had to make a few comments.

I know it's easy to knock our lads and the manager at the moment, and it's true that there is still a lot of work to do, but I think we were unlucky there.

The tug on Sigs was a blatant penalty - Brighton look a really dirty team and they got away with a lot - the Knockheart foul on Kev was a disgrace - the FA love introducing new rules every season - how is a foul like that not a red card offence? not an attempt at winning the ball. He gets MOTM for that.

The elbow on Calvert-Lewin was shocking - he sized it up, wasn't even looking at the ball - a grown man assaulting a kid. How he was still on the pitch I don't know.

We still have a long way to go, but there are signs of good football - we need to get behind these lads. COYB!

Believable2 Unbelievable5

16 Oct 2017 17:38:45
The elbow was purely assault BT. Looking straight at the player with complete intent to hurt him.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed025's Note - your right pierre he wasn,t even looking at the ball, he was bullying a young kid and thats where you need a big dunc type in the team to grab him by the throat and shake him, im not condoning violence but you look after your own and that encourages team bonding knowing you will have your team mates to back you up mate..

16 Oct 2017 18:06:42
I share that view, Ed. I don't condone violence on the pitch, but after that takedown on DCL this is the only time I can think of where Joey Barton would be handy to have around. At least good to see Jags step in and have a word.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i was happy to see jags step in OHEFB but with the severity of it i would have expected a stronger response from the other players to be honest..

16 Oct 2017 18:34:32
Sadly, Ed, I think that speaks volumes about the current negative mindset infiltrating the whole squad. Under Moyes and even Martinez, the likes of Baines, Jags etc wouldn't be afraid to make it be known they weren't happy with a bad tackle. I don't understand how we can have brought in so many 'leaders': Rooney, Sig, Klassen, Williams, etc yet not one of them can lead. Is it also telling that Jags, who has perhaps been out of the first 11 more than the regular starters, seems less affected by the malaise? Something is seriously rotten behind the scenes. Koeman isn't from Rotterdam by any chance is he?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - your right mate about a lack of a leader, on or off the pitch..

16 Oct 2017 14:56:24
I think Koeman will go soon but would you trust him to spend money in jan, after signing 3 no 10,s and then looking to sign another midfielder [if the press are beleived] Koemans has over inflated ego ie, slagging players off in public instead of the training ground tacking a strop with players and forcing them out. These are more the actions of knob head rather than a strong manager and that's beside what he is doing to the team. I would prefare him to go rather than loose players like Lookman and i am definitly in the Unsworth camp.

Lukaku mindset different going to Anfield comedy gold, so far your the same player, that was the same Lukaku when we were playing big teams useless like Henry said he had a big chance to score and fluffed it that's why he is not a big game player. Pundits that were raving about him will now know what he is about and he is not going to win the big games for Utd, they didn't look like a team that wanted to win the game from what I saw, Man City will play them of the park from what I'm seeing at the moment.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

16 Oct 2017 15:50:20
At the same time, TB, the service to him was woeful. JM set out for a draw even though the mancs have been banging goals in. Rom will always need a few shots before scoring, similar to Andy Cole who didn't fair too bad in his prime. Rom will score in the big games if the tactics are right, Jose set them up like we play against the top teams so he was never going to bag a shed load. Still a top player and has plenty of time to improve. He is the exact type of scorer we are crying out for right now.

Agree0 Disagree1

16 Oct 2017 20:31:10
Even Harry Kane misses chances in big games, especially in September! Rom will come good despite what us blues think, maybe we should be talking about why our players aren't scoring, in any game never mind big games, rather than a player who has probably scored a similar amount to our team combined.

16 Oct 2017 13:12:26
I do so hope Koeman has people that read these HYS. Schneiderlin is the weaklink as a DM (current form) . Sandro/ Calvert Lewelin needs to start as the focal striker point and to get the best out of them we need fast wingers, Lookman and Mirralas. It really is that simple.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

16 Oct 2017 16:30:23
We do not need two defensive midfielders, get a line of four defenders, 4 midfielders and two attackers, we are overcrowded and that is where the problem lies, too many playing in a congested midfield.

For what it's worth, Pickford, Kenny, Holgate, Jags, Baines, then Davies Gaye, Siggerson and Mirallas, with Calvert Lewin and either a Lookman or Rooney up top. I would even try Luke Garbutt at left back.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Oct 2017 17:00:07

I think Vlasic has earned his place. He has some of Coleman's swashbuckling attitude and approach. Adapting to PL quicker than most new signings, some of whom have been playing in PL for years!

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Oct 2017 23:22:53
Don't think Garbutt needs to play. Baines isn't doing that bad. The whole team is awful so you can't really single him out. The only two players worth a mention are Schneiderlin, who considering that he is one of our top earners needs to buck his ideas up, and Williams, who at least needs a few games rest and at worst may be past it.

I have tried to search for it but with no success, a while ago I seem to remember you writing that the club made a mistake in appointing Koeman in the first instance?

Firstly, apologies if I have got that completely wrong and two, if I haven't could you tell me why you think the club made a mistake?

Believable4 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - It is never a good idea to look to a manager who has far higher aspirations and is looking at using the club as a stepping stone to a job at Arsenal. Manchester United or Barcelona - wherever. It is particularly true if it is a manager who is stubborn, which Koeman is, or a manager who has walked out on clubs when the situation becomes difficult or does not suit him - again something Koeman has done over and over. Since before leaving Ajax 12 or 13 years ago his career has been embroiled in conflict and questionable decisions. Everton should have taken better advice at the time he was appointed - and the correct advise and timing could have opened up several very good options as I suggested then.

Stability is now important and this is not the time to be changing manager unless someone could persuade the likes of Chis Coleman to step in.}

I agree just been having this convo at work and have whittled it down to 5 possible solutions in my mind they all have various pros and cons
1 stick with koeman scares me to hell this 1 yes it's a new team and new style and it will take time but how long there's no signs of any improvement and it can't carry on
2 anchelloti yes big name big reputation is he the right fit it's all well and good operating at the highest level but he would face numerous new challenges if we could get him that puts a question mark against him for me
3 moyes very controversial left a bad taste when he left guilty of setting a glass ceiling but after nearly 5 years i would kill for the passion he got the team playing with and the players he did bring in on a budget are considerably better than now and with money could he do the job
4 dyche doing a great job at Burnley big step up if he was to come can he do it
5 unsworth fantastic job with the kids can he make the step up would have massive support from fans but I think it's too soon
Now probably the option I'm leaning towards which is probably the hardest sell to the fans is
6 benitez yes there's an issue with his past and that lot and some stupid comments but his pedigree at top end is clearly there and he's done the dirty work at a lower level and proved he can do that controversial yes but I think from the viable options he has more positives than the rest.

Personally I think if RK were to leave/ get sacked, then I would be happy for Rafa to make History and become the first manager to of managed both sides of the park. I also think he would have a big point to prove to that lot and that would help with his self motivation.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - second, the first manager to manage both Everton and Liverpool was both clubs' first ever manager, William Edward Barclay.}

16 Oct 2017 16:03:24
Grumpy how did you not know that mate, your teenage years too, shame on you lad :)

Ed001 do you reckon Rafa would come mate, I was strictly in the no way to Rafa jus because he managed youse but completely changed my mind now, personally I don't think he would do it anyway.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he would love to return to Merseyside mate. As he knows there is no chance of ever getting the job at Liverpool again, I think he would. This takeover at Newcastle is creating a lot of uncertainty right now.}

16 Oct 2017 17:03:32
You are indeed correct Ed001,
I didn't count him as he only "managed" us for 22 games whilst he was forming LFC.
That would be a great question for a pub quiz, shame I don't go to pubs any more.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I know mate, it was a different era and the boards picked the team then, but still he has his place in the record books. To be honest, I never knew until I was doing the research for the series of articles I am doing on former Liverpool managers. Though I did not do much on him, as he was joint manager of Liverpool and I thought I would leave him until I am doing the Everton managers. Amazing how connected the two clubs are at their roots though.}

16 Oct 2017 17:15:00
I said Rafa when Martinez got sacked and I would still go for him now regardless of his small club comment. If we don't go for top managers/ coaches are we not just confirming what he said about being a small club? The man is a winner and a proper tactician and would bring the stability and respect back to the dressing room and pitch.

16 Oct 2017 17:28:57
For me, it would take a huge and dramatic up turn in out fortunes for Koeman to keep his job. There’s kind of an inevitability about him going. I maybe wrong, and hope I am.

I would love Benitez at Everton. I think the comments made about is being a small club were slightly lost in translation. He was making the point that because Liverpool were flying at the time, teams of lesser ability weee setting up to stifle them and spoil their play. We were streets behind them at the time and did what’s we had to do to try and scrap a result against better clubs. That is what I believe he was getting at.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Oct 2017 08:45:05
I personally believe Ronald Koeman has lost the players. I think it all stems when he treated Niasse very badly, publicly shaming the poor lad. He has also made an example of Ross Barkly by his comments. Mirallas also seems to be on the end of stick from Koeman. Poor old Lookman don't know what the young lad has done, except give the ball away in one game and has disappeared. We all know Koeman was a superstar when he played, but I think his people skills have a lot to be left desired. I honestly believe he has lost the players and he needs his contract terminated. I look at moyes and all the players gave 100% nearly every game. If he is sacked I also think Barkley stays! I would replace him with David Unsworth as he has a grip on all the players. Then see where it goes from there. But one way or another Koeman has to go.

You could add McCarthy to that list Aussie Toffee. It seems everyone thought at the beginning it was Koeman just picking the players that he didn't rate for the future. Not giving them game time and letting it known they weren't in his plans.

Now it actually looks like his man management and attitude towards players is ignorant at best. This comes from someone who wanted Koeman and thought he would be good for the club.

In hindsight it looks like the group of people feeling the wrought of Koeman is growing to the determent of the club. McCarthy, Barkley, Niasse, Mirallas, Lookman have all seemed to of gotten hard times from Koeman. You could even add Davies to that list who in my opinion is getting a raw deal also.

Koeman needs to turn things around. The ever so humble Niasse who got treated the worst by Koeman saved his bacon a couple of week ago. Who will save him now? Only himself as far as I can see. Maybe its too late for that.

How is this for a theory!
The board as always at Everton are a total joke BUT perhaps they realise RK must go but are being clever .
If they sac him today it means the incoming manager which would have to be DU and JR ( as it will take too long to get in anyone else) would then possibly get off to a horrendous start ( especially as Moshri said he expects to loose to big clubs ) eh we were once big!
Therefore by waiting till the next few fixtures are out the way which they expect us to loose then bring in DU when there are more realistic fixtures!
I would not be suprised if DU has already been given the nod to get ready!

I think Koeman is trying to accommodate to my big signings that are either not sharp enough or are struggling with their form, to improve we have to play only one defensive holding midfielder, drop Sigurdsson drop Schneiderlin drop Rooney, we need a better balance and outlets, only an opinion, but something needs to change because I can't see us improving or creating a better team performance regardless to what any team we play against, if we played the bottom Club in the Championship league we would still struggle to win.

Uran for me its the Schneiderlin Gueye combination that needs to change. RK does sub one of them if he needs too so hopefully he will consider starting with one on the bench especially at home when we need to get the crowd behind us early doors. I don't have any issue with Sigurdssson and Rooney as the striker but would prefer one of them sitting behind DCL.

I say this with quite a bit of trepidation considering the strength of feeling some of you have towards him but I honestly think we are missing Ross Barkley. defences had to worry about him in the attacking third he could inject pace and run at people, I know he lost the ball a lot but when he had the ball we were on the attack and his crossing ability puts most of the team to shame.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Koeman have a terrible start with Southampton one season, turning it all around by beating us and going on to claim a spot in Europe.

I think he and the team need the time and space to develop and find their way, not all this negativity. I'm sure some players buy into this negativity and it impacts on the team spirit.

16 Oct 2017 09:31:51
I totally agree Mannoblue, after the expectations and posativity at the beginning of the season it seems that most, on here anyway, thinks RK has lost the plot. Even the some guys that started the season saying it would not be easy to integrate so many new players into the team or that this was a two to three season project seemed to have jumped on the get rid band wagon. Negativity breeds negativity, which is not what we need at the moment. Yes we are not playing well but its still only October, RK can do better as can the players. It is too early in the season too contemplate a relegation battle yet a lot of you have us relegated already. Its also nice to see so many willing to waste other peoples money. Rant over and to finish on a positive note we are the only team this season to have taken points from Man City so we can complete with the best when in form.
