Early days yet but what's everyone's opinion on what is deemed a successful season?
Personally I think we have to finish 7th but I want us to look at one of the cups this year, so many off the top 6 don't care about it and I don't get why, they are so determined to get champions league. Winning a trophy is so important that's what you play for to win things, even a league cup. That's what we want right to win trophies, you don't get remembered for finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

I think 7th could be attainable considering our challengers for it, i.e Leicester (sold their best player) and Burnley (Europa league distraction) will be wide of the mark this season.
Maybe someone like a Newcastle or Bournemouth could have a good season.
Other than that, I'm struggling to see anyone who could get really close.
It's up to us to gel and play as a team. If we do, with our quality, we should be looking at 7th at least.
Arsenal have Chelsea next, and if they lose could have their confidence knocked. Couple that with all their new players and manager and they could struggle to make top 6.

10th to 7th. It's going to take this season to get the squad working how Silva wants it and the next two windows to replace any players who don't fit.

I've got plenty of patience for the people in place.

If you to know what a successful season would be, it would be prem champs and both domestic cups won, but I'll settle for a good cup run and a euro place.

Hard to beat will do for me this season with plenty of goals.

Top 8 and beat Liverpool twice. I’d be fine.

{Ed0333's Note - you wouldn’t even beat Liverpool ladies mate. You might get top 8 tho.

Progress but its hard to define progress isn't it? I think we've had a good close season and have strengthened the squad considerably but they will take time to settle in and all the squad still have to get used to Silva's style of play. Patience and understanding will also be required.

Having said all that I agree with a lot of the posters that this season there is a good opportunity to look at moving up in the table. Man City and Liverpool both strong and have added to their squads but Spurs, a new stadium and no additions, Chelsea and Arsenal new managers and some unrest, Burnley distracted by Europe, Leicester losing Mahrez and Puel unpopular, West Ham bought a lot but I think they will struggle, Newcastle weak in backup to the first team. The rest focussing on survival

Could be the time to be positive but really all I want is progress I can see

I honestly feel like we have already made the progress we needed. We have a squad with players that cover the whole pitch. Our age group of players is now in the right area. But most importantly we look like we can actually play football that allows us to sustain pressure onto the opposition. I know we have only played 1 game, but when we went down to 10 men, we carried on trying to score goals in a game away from home. It is early days, but I have seen enough to suggest we are heading in the right direction. I know we have some great youngsters who will undoubtedly make it to the top. League position this season is irrelevant. More important is that we continue to strive to attack and create chances and goals. As a supporter a trophy or European qualification would be nice, but I can wait a season or two.

To me a successful season would be one that sees us comfortable in the league, pushing the top half, playing good football, hard to beat, a good cup run, and the manager still there at the end of the season.
Then hopefully next season, really push on and hopefully start pushing the top 6.

I hate to admit it but I agree in a way with where Ed0333 is coming from. Given the abundance of pace and attacking talent they have over the Park it will be difficult for a lot of teams to beat our neighbours. However, nothing is impossible, and I feel we can put up a better fight of it this season. They may end up bore draws or preferably high scoring nail biters. Can't wait to find out :-p.

Well I said earlier on that I expected Holgate to step up a level and be involved more this season before a ball was kicked. At 22 he has all the attributes to be a top defender. I can see him developing into another John Stones and probably playing alongside him for England. This leaved the manager with one of those luxury problems of who to pick to start at the weekend. I believe Holgate deserves to start after his performance last week. I also expect us to absoultely batter Southampton and this is coming from negative Degsyp. But that is really how I feel. Now we have the players in, I can only see us getting better and better. I hope I am right!

Hope your right Degsy. I think Keane will keep his place, too early for Mina so, it's between holgate and Zouma to partner Keane.
I too think we will be too strong for Southampton and I'm saying, optimistically, 4-1.

I am going for 3 nil Smit. I think we will play Holgate with Keane and keep a clean sheet. Its obviously guesswork but what the heck. I am smiling and happy after 4 years of Martinez and Koeman!

I'm really looking forward to the weekends game against Southampton, I think we can gauge abit better now we are going to do if we can keep 11 players on the pitch, I'm hoping for a good performance, plenty of goals and none conceded.
Will be interesting to see the line up, personally, aparts from jags, I think the team will be very much the same, hopefully couple of new ones on the bench.
