Just a footnote to my Bally post.
After the 69/70 championship season, Bally asked
Catterick to build another team "round him"
Instead, the Catt sold him to Ars.
Bally was gutted, & asked the Catt why?
"just good business" he was told.
In those days (no agents)teams agreed a price, &
you just did it.
He never liked London, & always came back to Bolton in the holidays to see his mum & dad, & still
had a night out in town.
How times have changed - for the worse.

Was talking to somebody today at the cricket at Aigburth. My Everton top got him talking to me about Harry Catterick, who the bloke knew.I told him HC lost all credibility at Everton when he sold Alan Ball

Agree0 Disagree0

Times have changed, but imho it's six of one and half a dozen of the other: highly paid players are being drawn to flash night clubs and other "celebrity" venues, but there's also the risk that some people might just want to provoke trouble when all the footballer wanted was just a quiet night out at his local plug or restaurant. I think we'd all get pi**ed off by people constantly wanting photos on their mobile phones or autographs, when all we want is a quiet night out. The price of fame is no privacy.

Agree0 Disagree0

The 1970 championship team fell part much too quickly. In 1970-71, the European Cup loss to Panathinaikos was probably tainted by some dubious refereeing. The FA Cup semi final loss to the dark side was imho the turning point in them becoming the dominant team (by and large) on Merseyside.
But the transfer dealings, such as selling Alan Ball, and the loss of form by key players - plus injuries to others - all led to a long period of mediocrity albeit with occasional moments of unfulfilled expectation. Then when we did rise again in the mid-1980s, we got done by the European ban. Then when we looked to be recovering in the mid-1990s, we had Agent Johnson throwing a spanner in the works.
Hopefully, after a period of stability under DM, we're now on the road forward under RM.

What's happening with Besic, why the silence from the club, bobby normally very transparent about stuff with us fans. The redrubbish are signing all and sundry, we can't close a 4m deal.

I can't remember the club saying they were going to sign Besic. He was linked, that is all. Stop reading the papers and listening to Sly Spurts

Bally for greatest player, also a great bloke.I new Alan when he played for Everton, & when the 1st team played on a Sat. they got Mondays off.He lived in Worsley nr. Bolton & come into the
Boars Head in Bolton on a Sunday night.
He came without any hangers-on, & have a drink with all the lads.Pubs closed at 10:30 in those days, so after we would go across the road to a club until about 1:00.
This is the best bit. he would give a lift home to one of the lads (Jack Hargreaves)an Evertonian,
who lived up Great Lever (in his direction)
On the way home Jack would ask Bally to stop so Jack could a late night curry & then eat it in the car.
Alan for one night just wanted to be one of the lads & his fame & money made no difference to
him, or us.
He would buy his round & talk football & most
important, listen to other peoples point of view.
How many players would do that today?
Football is a lesser place with the loss of people
like him.You might think the is just another tall
tail, but on my life it's true.

While we're patiently awaiting another signing. what was everybody's first game at the old lady? I was a fairly late developer into the football family. My first game was as a 13 year old against Watford in the Championship season which we won 3-2. Seem to remember Mountfield scoring two, one a twice-taken penalty after the wind blew a hessian sack across the goalmouth! Great day and as someone once said, once Everton touches you, nothing else is the same.

1964 v Fulham won 2-0 Pickering and Temple scored. My grandad took me on my 6 birthday and that was that.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was 11 in 1985 mate my first game was a 4-1 win against sunderland and andy gray scored to diving headers what a day. I still remember the feeling as I walked in to the upper bullens and saw the green grass and heared the atmosphere for the first time. Been hooked ever since.

The 8 nil victory over southampton at goodison in 1970 was mine.

Is it me or is anyone else suspicious of what's going on.Only 3 pre season games? only re signed players so we are well down on last seasons squad size, the constant mentions of the young players; is this how we swell the squad? Only 4 weeks to start of season and not one player bought, not exactly integrating them into Bobby's football methods. Constant rumours of Ross for City, Stones fr Spurs.
There's no smoke without fire and the quieter the club are the worrying it gets.
Hope I wake up and all's well in the end.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I with u, pls, please give us something to hang on to "we expect to be able to announce some signings in the next few . " Is better than the silence. we thought it had changed with bobby in charge.
Bill DM called us the peoples club, that us the fans. "no watch this space"
We understand we can't have names but anything to hang on to.
"We are not signing anyone " is better than no news at all.We might not like it but we can deal with it.
Its a bit like you now the wifes having an affair but you don't know the unlucky buggers name!!

the pre season games is wierd I don't understand it, 3 games is not enough as for transfers, boby said we had money but due to the world cup they will be later deals rather than sooner, which is sort of understandable as players will be on hols and assessing they options, as for barkly and stones, its just same story diff day, they may well want these players from us but we don't need to sell so imo it would have to be one hell of an offer to make us think twice. just take it as a complement to our club and team.

Problem is if they say they expect a few signing in the coming days then no one signs Bk will then be accused of lying to the fans he's in a no win situation just be patient and trust the people running the club to do what is best for us. If we get to the end of the window and still haven't signed anyone then there are questions they will need to answer.

To all those posters complaining about taking on 65 year old Joe Royle: what's his age got to do with it? That's just a number.
If he's physically and mentally fit enough to do the job, then that's all that matters. If he can apply his experience and knowledge of the game, and use his many contacts in the sport, and can spot a player and know how to best develop that player - all for the club he undoubtedly loves - then it'll be another massive tick in the box for RM's work in progress that's taking us onwards and upwards to ongoing success.
Also, the more that RM gets Everton into his heart and soul - just like it clearly is with Joe Royle and so many others at our club - the more likely it is that RM won't be tempted elsewhere and the more likely it will be that RM will bring us repeat success over many years.
The coming season will be challenging and hopefully not a "second season syndrome" fallback to the standards of so many disappointing previous seasons. Thankfully, RM's positivity is more promising than DM's caution ever was.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yeh, well Said Sid. Why not bring an Everton legend in that can guide our youngsters? After all, he brought us our last trophy!

Whatever happened to the proposed transfer of Ryan Robinson from Shelbourne to Everton that was being mooted a short while ago? It was pretty much a done deal - or so it seemed - and now the silence is deafening.
Can anyone shed some light?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Dont worry sid RM has everything sorted well this is what everyone keeps saying.so if he does not fancy him what's the problem.

Not a rumour but saw a report earlier that currently Magaye Gueye is having a "trial" at millwall. Sad to see really as he looked desperate to impress when he made appearances for us. Shows that you need more than potential to succeed. Hope he finds a club soon.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

15 Jul 2014 17:33:50
Yeah, you need even a modicum of ability. He tried quite hard, but was nowhere near premier league standard. Never looked skillful, but he usually did alright against lower league players, so let's hope that's his level and he'll succeed.

If you could magically bring back just one former Everton player - but only as he was during his time at Everton and not when he was at other clubs - into the current team, who would it be?
For me it'd have to be a reliable goalscorer. I never saw Dixie Dean or Tommy Lawton play, so it'd be a toss-up between Bob Latchford and Gary Lineker. If I thought the current team didn't need a centre forward, then I'd have to go - no question - for the great Alan Ball.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd have Dave Thomas in the wing. Really enjoyed watching him and he had a knack of putting it right onto Latchford's head or foot.

Agree0 Disagree0

Alesandro Pistone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Latchford every day. Don't think he ever got the recognition he really deserved, especially from England.

Agree0 Disagree0

Per koldrupp pure class he could even head balls with is eyes closed

Agree0 Disagree0

Can never go beyond Alan Ball, no one else good enough to lace his boots. Been plenty of other great Everton players, some already mentioned but Alan Ball was; the Greatest of them all.

Agree0 Disagree0

Defo Neville Southall in goal. World class shot stopper and acrobat. The confidence he gave the whole team was massive. I'd even go as far to say he was the greatest keeper ever bar one or two other contenders.

Agree0 Disagree0

I was too young to watch Kendall, Ball & Harvey but that would've been my dream. I'd love to have had Lineker for a second season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Never really had the chance to see the real true greats at our beloved club (live) so my choice would have to be (spelling) Andrei Kanchelskis or big Dunc.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2014 01:10:09
The Golden Vision . Alex Young . could use head or feet equally well to score . Magic player

Agree0 Disagree0

Kendall Harvey and Ball? Probably Howard as the best player never to play for England. Bob Latchford is probably need more though at the moment!

Agree0 Disagree0

'Tricky' Trevor Steven for me. A tremendous player bought for a snippet and HK developed his natural talents.

{Ed025's Note - great player davey...but at this time it would be the latch for me mate..

Have stopped watching tv now that bloody Transfer Rumour board is driving me mad. I keep praying the guy will press the badge and give me some good news, but seems to press everyone but ours. I know that's not so but that's how it feels. Come on Bill let's crack on please!

There's plenty of speculation in the media about clubs (Man City) bidding for Barkley and clubs (Tottenham) bidding for Stones. As far as I'm concerned, they can bid all they like - they're going nowhere. We're not under financial pressure to sell and RM has said that transfers will only happen for football reasons. Even if he thought the money being offered could improve the squad, I just don't see any incoming players being better than Barkley and Stones. Anyway, as RM has consistently said, the interest in our players is a compliment to how well they and the team are doing. I reckon that as long as we are challenging for trophies - and playing in Europe (preferably the Champions League) - then we can retain our best players for many years to come.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Well said Sid, as has been mentioned on here before, the extra tv money goes to all clubs so we are not in a better position to compete for the best players, but in the real world the economy is roughly the same. So our other costs should be a lot more manageable and therefore we should be able to keep hold of our best talents now and in the future.

So ed what's the hold up with the Besic deal? The lad looks really good so I hope its not another deal that we manage to cluck up!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - its still in abeyance mac..but we do need to get a rattle on mate..

15 Jul 2014 11:42:43
A few rumours doing the rounds about us being interested in Christoph Kramer - he's the lad who was taken off in the World Cup Final not knowing who or where he was. Another defensice midfielder on the radar is Adrien Tameze. Young French lad. At this rate - we'll be playing a new formation with 4 or 5 holding midfielders. The papers are putting 2 and 2 together and making 0. No chance of Stones or Barkley leaving unless the money is astronomic. No panic yet - but would be nice to see a bit of action having seen the business being done elsewhere.

So far, Vellios has been released, Gueye has left by mutual consent, and Junior has had his loan extended. That's pretty much most of the dead wood (in many fans' eyes) being moved on.
A few of the youngsters will surely get a chance to impress during pre-season and, although they might go out on loan during the season, I don't foresee any of them leaving on permanent deals just yet.
IMHO, that just leaves Duffy - who's now an International player and did do well at Yeovil - still to become an established member of the Everton first team squad. Does anyone see him being above Jagielka, Distin, Stones - even Alcaraz and now Browning, let alone any new signings - in the pecking order for centre back? Surely he's done enough on loan at Yeovil - and for Ireland - to have given RM ample time to form an opinion?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think shane will b on his way if not now then January and I'd think 2.5 to 3 mil would b a fair enough price.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2014 12:46:30
suppose Duffy may be 4th choice centre back behind Jags, Distan and stones, but Martinez doesn't want to admit defeat in showing trust in Alcaraz. The amount of centre backs we have we could play: Jags and Distan in the league, stones and Duffy in the Europa and Alcaraz and Browning in the domestic cups, thinking about it we could probably do the same with the two centre mids: Barry and McCarthy in the league, Osman and Gibson in the Europa and Green and Kennedy in the domestic cups.

From the official Everton club website:
"Francisco Junior's loan spell at Stromsgodet has been extended by a further month.
The 22-year-old midfielder joined the Norwegian outfit in February in a deal that was to run until 15 July.
All parties have agreed to lengthen the loan, which will now expire on 15 August.
Junior has played 10 times for Stromsgodet in the league, notching his first senior goal in March."

I cannot imagine that he will ever be part of the Everton first-team squad again. He'll surely be moved on after this loan spell. He'd have been at pre-season training in Austria with the others if he was rated by RM. Does anyone truly believe that Junior has a future at Everton?
