My Mum, 2 sisters my brother myself along with our children are truly humbled by the response and good will we have received from the members of this forum, I now know why dad always talked fondly about this place. All of our kids (Grumpy's grand children) have learnt a valuable lesson, By sticking with what you believe in, even when standing apart from others, will always gain you respect in the long run. If this post goes off on a tangent that is because there are 4 of us trying to write it, Mum, Jackie, Jane and myself. Words fail us in trying to express our gratitude to each and every one of you. I see the posts about dad have now reached a full page on here, dad would have a lump in his throat reading them and be embarrassed at the same time, he didn't like fuss.
Someone asked for some insight into dad and after everything you have all done we feel it is the least we can do. Dad was born in Bootle and lived there until he was about 9 or 10 then moved to Speke, he kept saying to us kids he was born in the rubble and had a house brick for a pillow. I do not really know when he went to his first match as he always told us he was born an Evertonian. He would go to almost every home game and about half the away games every season, his party trick was to recite the full squad from any year people chose.
I don't know if he ever told you but when he is not at a game he listens on the radio and when Everton Score he did the "Conga". Mum told us that a sales rep from dolphin showers was at the house one day and dad had the match playing softly in the background, she said Everton scored and dad jumped up grabbed this poor salesman and started doing the conga. If you saw the size of dad you will see how he managed it, he was very very big. No matter what after doing the conga he would start laughing and it was so infectious you could not help but join in. In the 80's and 90's dad had a couple of businesses and every Saturday when Everton were playing he would get the staff a lot of drinks, that is those who attended. Part of the conditions were they had to recite the current Everton squad, those that did not would have to continue working and not be allowed a drink.
Dad loved playing devils advocate and always had the ability to see what he thought others had missed, he was so passionate about Everton that he refused point blank to hear anything bad about them. I could go on forever.
The one thing I do know is that when dad touched your life his way and manner would grow on you, I know he was my dad but he was the nicest, fairest and most genuine person I have ever known. I should be holding my head high with pride, instead we all feel devastated.
Thank you again
Tony.

{Ed001's Note - at least that explains a lot, no wonder he was Grumpy if he was from Bootle! Which part was he from?}

if it's any consolation i will always have respect for your father for not budging on what he truly believed in, especially in this day and age where people value acceptance from society rather than fearlessly expressing themselves, please take this as a lesson from your dear (grand) father :)

My goodness. I’m not ashamed to say that I’m crying my eyes out reading this. What a man!

Thanks Tony for helping us to see what a real man your Dad was. Looks like you have many more fond memories to cherish.

Ace. Tears flowing here too.

Tony, thanks for all info. Just a shame we couldn't meet up with him and have a debate over few pints. Would have been fun. Seemed a lovely man and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. The blues have lost another good one.
Hope he sending some good vibes down here today to help us beat Swansea. If we win I'll certainly be dedicating it to our grumpy.

Again condolences to the family and we'll all try to keep his spirit alive through these pages.

Really touching words lump in the throat and tears in the eyes. We all know he had his views on here which he expressed in a considered way with Everton at heart but sounds like a top person and a great family man. You should all be proud.

And this is why we are Everton, we are a family and we don't need to meet in person to feel saddened at the loss of one of our own. I always enjoyed Grumpys posts and his stance was nothing short of stubborn and after what you said about him Tony I now see why, he was a true Evertonian. Keep up the tradition your dad set and post your views, not everyone will agree with them but I guess that's what kept your dad coming back, he had his views and always stood by his posts. Will miss his posts and thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

Just on here from the Liverpool site. Never saw Grumpys posts but he sounds like an incredible character and a very sad loss.

We may be rivals from across the park, but we are also a family.

My thoughts, condolences and best wishes go out to you and yours, and I hope you continue the family tradition on these boards (and ours) mate.

RIP Grumpy.

Saddened to read the news about Grumpy. I don’t post here a great deal, I prefer to read most of the posts, but I always enjoyed his posts and am certain he will be greatly missed on this board. It’s fair to say that even though you don’t actually know a person properly on a forum such as this, but you do feel that you do and it’s really saddened me to hear about him.

No matter how much he will be missed on here, that is nothing compared to how his family will miss him and feel his loss. My thoughts and sincere condolences go to them right now.

RIP Grumpy, 💙💙.

Filled with sadness after what's happened to Grump and seeing the posts just echoes what a great guy GT was. Tony, I am so sorry to you and your family but I'd just like to say what a great man your dad seemed to be and still is as he is sits with the legends up there. Stuff like this puts life into perspective. The game tomorrow seems absolutely nothing but I'd just hope the lads show the fight and passion GT did his whole life and I hope they give him something to cheer about tomorrow. RIP mate x.

WTF do I take the mick out of now. Yes it happens and I am not a religous person but sometimes you have to wonder what it is all about. Condolences seem insincere from those of us that are anonymous to Grumpy's family but believe me they are meant. I for one am now going to take a break from this board. Perspective.

Dear Tony,
As you haver seen from the many posts your Dad Grumpy was a great friend of many on here. Yes we did have our minor differences but all, especially your Dad, are fervent Evertonians. Some of us were born to be Evertonians, my Dad took me to my first game When I was six, one year after came home from the war as a soldier. Others of us for, whatever reason, ended up supporting Everton rather than some other team
Talking about those days your Dad was 75, I am 78 so we are both war babies, born at a difficult time for our parents who had no idea whether we would end up being overrun by the Germans or beating the crap out of them. Football at that time was the furthest from anyones mind. However the war had one positive aspect in that banter between football supporters was much more friendly, never nasty but just good old fashioned banter. Your Dad had very definite opinions and he made sure we all knew what they were but I did not need to be told what age he was, nor the era he came from, he was a gentleman.
All of us are united in our passion for Football and most but not all, are passionate Evertonians even one of the Ed's. Non of us knows details of any other member of this forum and rightly so. However your Dad, Grumpy was such an integral part of our daily life as an Everton supporter I would hate for him to leave without knowing little of his past. We don't need to know personal details but were he was born for example, how he became an Evertonian, his first game and so on. I know you are grieving right now and busy with personal thinks but sometime in the future if you could give us a little background on your Dad it would be appreciated.
Mike a friend of your Dad's.

Woke up this morning still saddened by the news of grumpy passing. As I said never always agreed with him but respected him a lot.
Spoke to him and others on this site more than the wife so he felt almost like family.
Sending love to your family grumpy. Have fun up there and hopefully we can be successful soon with you looking down on us. RIP bud.

A sad end to the day finding out about the loss of Grumpy. Lived by his name when it came to Everton FC but only through the love and passion of wanting the best from Everton "Nil Satis Nisi Optimum"
A big loss for this forum. So I can't imagine the impact on his family and friends.

To Grumpy
You're going to be sat with the Everton legends come matchday. So now you can tell them all about it lol. With your input you're going to be missed here mate. But our loss is their gain.
Til kick-off.

{Ed0333's Note - My deep condolences & sympathies are with Grumpy’s family & friends at this time. Yes Mowfee I echo your sentiments, it will be a big loss for everyone on this forum. RIP.

I echo all of the above and below statements about Grumpy. RIP mate, you did say you wanted to see our new stadium, but as far as I'm concerned you will have the best view in the house up there, and there will hopefully be a few "I told you so's" to everyone. Deepest condolences to your family, you will certainly be missed by all on here.
