3 points today was the important part of the job. We and other teams will play better as the season kicks on.

Koeman got it dreadfully wrong in the first half. I have never seen us play well in a 3 at the back. Also Williams AND Jags in the 3 is far too slow. It usually works better when Holgate takes up the right 3rd.

He other obsession is playing Calvert on the right. I have no idea why. You can say he put the ball in for the goal but he was pretty much a disaster there today and in preseason. However, move him to the centre and he's a different animal. He could and should have had a hatrick today. He's a kid still and I think in a couple of years he could be a top striker.

Wayne was great today. I didn't want him and he's still got a lot to do to justify the move but I'm praying he proves me wrong and today it was great.

Sandro needs discipline and he needs to be more composed especially with his passing. I think he's got bags of potential but Koeman needs to get him in a role and drill him on it morning noon and night. He will score goals and he will cause many problems for teams. His pace is stunning but it's like he's had a box of proplus before the game.

Martina started the second half slow and lead footed but eventually got going and delivered some great balls into the box. He also listened to Keane instructions and did relatively well the Stoke sub whos name i can't remember but looked pretty nifty on his toes.

Keane is good in a back four but was left exposed in the three in the 1st half. I really like him and he is constantly talking to his keeper, other defenders and men in front of him. He looks like another captain in the squad already.

Gana was MOM for most. I probably just give it to Rooney but he was very tidy. He contributed to a poor 1st half though and he's got a habit of looking backwards with the ball instead of forwards. I'm still not convinced we need both him and Snids in the middle especially against teams like this at home. Snids looks a couple of weeks away in mental sharpness to me. Still was good in the second half.

Right with all this said I'm saving one player for last.

Pickford.

Wow. Everytime that ball came in the box he caught it. If he couldn't catch he punched it. If there was an opposition head getting to the ball he punched through his head. If an Everton head was getting to the ball he punched through his head as well. He didn't hesitate, panicky and didn't take risks.

Then that moment in a game. It's all about to go horribly wrong. Doom is emerging. Self destruction. 'Not on my watch' you could almost hear him say. The save was brilliant. Teams now know that penalty box they need to get into has a new Lord and master and he owns it.

Utterly woeful 1st half but a better second. A solid base to work from but much more needed up front to compete.

However, loads of promise and a glint that this season could finally bring some kind of success.

The signing of the summer for me Pickford, his distribution, confidence and commanding of his 6 yard box is what we haven't seen since Nigel Martyn.
The shape in the 1st half was poor and square pegs in round holes with Calvert Lewin on the right was not good and the backwards sideways passing was Martinezesque.
Schneiderlein to me looked a little off the pace today also, 1st game done, 3 points, clean sheet so not all bad.

Think Schneiderlin has been off the pace in pre season games as well as yesterday.

People are going on about our defense and the changes needed. Played 3 competitive games so far and yet to concede. Give the team a chance until / IF they mess up. Still wouldn't get on their backs as they need our support all season.

I'm not having a go at the defenders. As I said they played well. However, the 3 at the back was a shambles and we look much better with four. Even Koeman admitted he got it wrong. You'd be absolutely stupid to not realise it wasn't working in the first half.

It's okay to call players/ team on something if it's not working and the post was not negative. I highlighted the good and bad.

Would anyone take a punt on Sam vokes as a last resort for a target man?
I'd like to finish the transfer window with:
Moussa dembele-Celtic
Gylfi-Swansea
Lemos-las Palma or Ben Gibson-boro or Davison Sanchez-Ajax
Giroud or benteke or Dolberg-Ajax or bas dost any chance eds hahšŸ™šŸ¼.

From what Koeman has said he was a left footed CB so out of that lot Ben Gibson is the only one.
The dream signing for that left CB position would be Van Dijk barring disaster that's the position for the next 5 years
Wesley Hoedt looks impressive and solid at Lazio, great tackler good range of passing as well
Now don't shoot me for this just wondering on other opinions but if we look for a temporary solution, Mangala on loan?

Wayne Rooney was by far and away the best player on the pitch today.

Got his goal, first touch and second touches were so clever.

Knew when to draw the fouls and when to kill the game (staying down maybe a little longer than he should have) .

Didnt light the game up with skill but ran the show with his experience at the top level.

Gueye was absolutely top drawer as well, God knows how many tackles and interceptions he made.

Keane solid and Pickford assured.

Wasnt the best first half, but after the change half time, things picked up and we dominated.

Good confidence going into next week.

Up the blues.

Wayne is pure class just what we were missing last year, if we get another striker in and he drops back we will be a force to be reckoned with. far better second half, good times ahead, GuernseyBlue.

I've been a supporter of Koeman but what was he thinking with the team that started the game? It was obvious from the first few minutes that it was not working and totally unbalanced. Much better second half due to the substitutes. Great save from Pickford, great goal from Wayne, Keane looked class, Gana was all over the place defending, Calvert-Lewing great pass for the Rooney goal and looked much better in the center second half than on the wing for the first half. One thing we have to improve on is our pace, we looked pedestrian even compared to Stoke specially in the first half and the was too much backward passing. Koeman has to improve, I would give him a 1out of 10 for his team selection.

Your right there Mike mate we were hardly at the races in the first half, we definitely need a top class striker and another defender with Sigurdsson in the middle then look out Premiership, cheers GuernseyBlue.

Just got back from game, first half was awful attacking wise, second half much better. Pickford, Keane, Rooney and Gana stood out for me, thought Sandro looked class as well, Calvert-Lewin had a great 2nd half when played in his right position. Davies made a difference. Koeman needs to start getting tactics right from the start though in my opinion.

{Ed002's Note - They will be looking to sell him.}

Would love dzeko at Everton. Hopefully he's one of those signings that slips under that radar until he's arrived and he's holding that Everton shirt. He's one of the best names we've been linked to, I just fear it's all noncencce.

Why do people go on about the new kits the colour the design it doesn't matter how it looks it's about the 3 points a a game nice kits don't win you trophies it's the people who perform or don't in them coyb.

Shirt sales are a big part of the club's finances so it kinda helps if people like it. From what I've seen on here the views are a bit mixed.

If you ask they will get the game on for you, only downside is if there are other games same time ko like the reds, Utd, Chelsea etc, they tend to put on first, not looked at other fixtures today but there's nothing those Turkish tv cannot get on, find a place with no footy on already and ask if he can get the match on normally around 10 mins before ko avoid a big pub look for a smaller almost empty bar, more chance guy putting it on in there, good luck Geoff.

Got to say I'm really disappointed in the 3 Kits we have. The home and away kits are just boring and as for the third kit, well I'm just really disappointed I won't have it for the game today cos' its bloody lovely!
For the past 3 seasons the best kit we have had has been the 3rd kit, so who decides which is the away and which is the 3rd kit because who ever they are they really need to take a look at themselves.

While I, like many on this site, am frustrated with the amount of time the Sigurdsson deal is taking, I don't understand the people saying "it's just 5 million in today's market, just pay it and move on". This summer we spent about 5 mil on Sandro and he will be worth ten times that amount in 3 years. The board know that Sigurdsson wants to be a toffee and they're not going to be rushed into spending more than they have to. The revolution is upon us, and I for one couldn't be happier with our summer (Unless Giroud could have been convinced) .
