the winners of the uefa cup don't automatically qualify for the champions league

Agree0 Disagree0

Here's the quote from the UEFA Champions League rulebook. In their terminology, titleholder means winner. England has four places in the competition. There is no provision for the CL runners up to get any special qualification.
"The UEFA Champions League titleholder is guaranteed a place in the group stage even if it does not qualify for the competition through its domestic championship.
a) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the number of places to which the titleholder's association is entitled in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League does not change.
b) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and does not qualify for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the lowest-ranked club of the association’s UEFA Champions League representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into the latest possible round where there is a vacancy). In this case, the association of the titleholder is entitled to one additional place in the UEFA Europa League.
c) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to fewer than four places in the UEFA Champions League and qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, it is entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League in addition to the association’s other UEFA Champions League representative(s). In this case, the combined number of places to which the titleholder's association is entitled in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League does not change.
d) If the titleholder comes from an association entitled to fewer than four places in the UEFA Champions League and does not qualify for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, it is entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League in addition to the association’s other UEFA Champions League representative(s). In this case, the association of the titleholder is entitled to one additional place in the UEFA Champions League."

And here's the UEFA Europa League rule about its titleholder. England has three places.
"Unless the UEFA Europa League titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Champions League through its domestic championship, it is guaranteed a place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. If the titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, the number of places to which its association is entitled in the UEFA Europa League does not change. If the UEFA Europa League titleholder does not qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League through its domestic competitions, its participation in the UEFA Europa League is not at the expense of the contingent of its association."

Now that's all perfectly clear, surely?
:-)

Wow Baron! There's 36 UEFAs in that post mate. That's got to be a record! Haha.

Just look at the eight ties in the fifth round of the FA Cup this weekend.
Two of the current top four teams in the Premier League must go out (Arsenal v Liverpool and ManCity v Chelsea).
At least two of the teams to go through must be from outside the Premier league (Sheffield Utd v Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday v Charlton).
The four other ties are between Premier League teams fighting relegation and either against lower division teams (Cardiff v Wigan and Brighton v Hull) or against another Premier League team (Sunderland v Southampton and us v Swansea).
So, at least two lower division teams (maybe four) will be in the sixth round draw and only two top-four teams. If this season isn't a good opportunity to go all the way, then I don't know what is.

I think most of us felt the same last year Baron when we beat Cheltenham, Oldham and Bolton with Millwall or Blackburn to come after Wigan. We all know how that turned out.

If anything last year's path was 'easier' but we did have the footballing genius managing us. Maybe, just maybe, we have a better chance with RM as he's proven he can win in with a lesser team, although they had one of the easiest passages in FA cup history but so did we. Aside from us they didn't face a PL team until the final, which would have been the case with us had we overcome Wigan and subsequently Millwall.

Could RM become the first manager in history to win it in successive seasons with 2 different clubs?

Hallam hope looks a quality player and should be in the first team within the next year or so. And it got me thinking we have have 4-5 players nearly ready to step up to the first team, and that might explain are lack of permanent signings.

Just a thought anyways, cheers

Agreed lew and mick. Mcaleny. Hope. Browning. Kennedy. Long. We have an abundance of talent just waiting for their chance. The future's bright the future's blue.

Ive said this before. Our youth set up looks very similar to that of Manchester United about 12 years ago when scholes, 2 neville brothers and a certain mr beckham came through the ranks. Consider browning as 1 of the nevilles, lundstrum our version of scholes, barkley our becks not to mention mcaleny, long, hope. Albiet some of those we hype up due to being evertonians, but there is no reason why at least 3/4 of those players would become 1st team regulars not only for us over the next couple of years, but also national squad players.

Agree0 Disagree0

Im looking forward to George Green coming through. He is ment to be a cracking player and if he gets stuck in and continues to learn, then the sky could be the limit for the kid. Ryan Ledson is another getting good hype. Maybe its a good thing we don't have a billionaire owner. We would just buy players instead of giving the kids a chance.

May sound a bit negative, but I can't help but feel that this season was our best chance to finish top 4 and it may well of been blown. I feel that with United and Spurs being below par there was a massive chance to have a go at the top 4, but I feel that United will spend big in the summer, Spurs will spend as will Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

If we don't get Champions League this season then the pressure's really on the club to strengthen considerably in the summer in order to compete next season.

I do keep forgetting this season could be classed as a 'transition season' but we've gone so long without success it's always disappointing when we fall short.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - just being around that top group is an achievement in itself tony, with our limited resources i think we are doing really well, of course we would all love massive investment and big name players but this is what we have, i think we are everyones favourite second club because of the fact we thrive in the face of adversity..

Well said Ed, we all know that Rome wasn, t built in a day this is Roberto, s first season and I for one am full of optimism for the years to come, well done Everton, GuernseyBlue

. have to say from lukakus most recent interview that his attitude stinks a little. seems to think he is entitled to play only for a team that is in the champions league?? Um, wakey wakey mate - start scoring again & putting your chances away instead of missing them, then you might well be in the champions league. Sorry, but for me these comments confirm my suspicions with this guy, I certainly wouldn't 20 million on him but would spend 8-9 million on Batyshuai instead.

seems to fancy himself, can't wait for him to go back to chelsea and hopefully get a proper striker in rather than that donkey lukaku

Agree0 Disagree0

I must admit the I've been a bit disappointed with his performances recently.
Why can't somebody invent a footballer "blender", then we could put Rom & Naisy in it & then hopefully, (we are Everton after all!), end up with a player with Rom's physicality & skill & Naisy's effort, commitment & work rate?!
Ah well, as Cliff Dick used to sing, "Dreamin'. , I'm only dreamin'. "

Lol. love it toffee Tezza.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree "delusions of grandeur" springs to mind. Not as good as he thinks he is although I think he will eventually fulfill his potential.I don't think we should spend £25 mill or whatever figure chelsea want and would much prefer Batyshuai for a third of the price.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lukaku needs to prove that he's a Champions League quality player first, needs to show on the pitch that he's good enough, he was poor in the games leading up to his injury. £20 million is too much I agree on his performances, but when he's on form it isn't.

Agree0 Disagree0

To squish Lukaku and Naismith into one player could only be called Lunaisy! Thank you, thank you. Yes, I am available for parties, weddings and bar mitzvahs.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - good stuff OHEFB, but dont give up the day job just yet mate.. :)

Makes me laugh this I specifically remember mike biting my head of for commenting on lukakus true value a few weeks ago. What has changed since then mike? You said he had everything and when I compared signing Morata vs Lukaku you said there was no competition. And do you still believe he is valued at 25-30 mill and can be compared to Shaquiri, gotze and whoever else you said.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Feb 2014 21:50:57
no you said he is worth 10m max overall, he is 20 and has everything, does he use it? no, he also has a woeful first touch and despite being 6 foot 3 he is terrible in the air, I had a go because you said we should sign morata for 10m, when we have no chance whatsoever, I don't want lukaku permanently and if martinez spends 20m on him I will be annoyed, judging by his interviews I don't know where he is going, one week its 'i had an argument with jose', next its 'i would love to stay here', then 'me and jose never argued' and then its 'i want to play in the champions league', the boy needs to get his act together, I also never compared him with gotze and said he is worth 30m, but most of all, when did I mention shaquiri, xherdan shaquiri? the poor mans arjen robben? he is terrible and overweight, I don't consider him in the same league as mario gotze

oh sorry I said to degsy I would go in more detail, for shaquiri

positives:
quick
skillful
beast left foot
still young

negatives:
fat
inconsistent
weak
lazy
scared of being tackled
greedy
greedy on the pitch too

Agree0 Disagree0

I think is said he was worth 10-15 mill due to the level of performance he produces. But with him being Belgium and in the favoured big powerfull striker mould his value is massively over inflated.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh and sorry mate I must be getting mixed up with Shaquiri haha

Agree0 Disagree0

Okay, nothing to do with Lukaku, but if any of you think Shaqiri is 'fat', you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. He's a physical beast. That is all.

Spurs fan here.

Fair play, you put in a good performance, however, in my opinion, you didn't deserve to win (I'm not saying we did). You played better all round football than us yesterday by far, but lacked any cutting edge. (Mirallas opportunity, was probably the best if he would've played Naismith in). But for all that better football, you had one more opportunity on target.

We had 1 clear cut opportunity, and it was taken, and that's what the game come down to. We played badly, but managed to take all 3 points.

I think Clattenburg had an all round bad game, (personally I think he's about as useful as a chocolate fire blanket), few decisions went both ways that at the time none of us were happy with.

I like Everton, I like how the club runs, and I especially like RM. I think if anyone can take you places, it's him. But I see a fair few of you who dislike him, and I don't really understand why?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Nice one.

Agree0 Disagree0

Always easier to write something like this after winning, just patronising really

Agree0 Disagree0

Dislike Martinez? What are you droning on about? Save the pity speech mate, I saw one team play something remotely close to decent football. Your lightyears away from being a team that warrants it's ridiculous price tag and you will not finish in the champions league. And when you sack your manager because of it we will be standing by ours. Strange that considering how much we dislike him right

I really feel that there will be a few more twists and turns Degsy its up to us to grab the opportunity when it comes.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree. At least 5th. Some of our players coming back from injury have had a much needed rest and can really shine in the last 5 games when some of our challengers will be knackered.

Clattenburg should never be allowed to referee any game again let alone an everton game! Unlawfully biased, every time I've seen him referee our games he always seems to be 'against' us. I hate nothing more than a good game getting ruined by a poor/biased referee.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agreed! He blew non stop for any small contacts by us (including just 50 50 chases etc where we just happened to win the ball) but let them push and shove us off the ball all over the place.
He blew against Naismith for just winning a fair ball about 5 times at least. Their goal was similar.

Just doing that one thing can really help one team over another.

I think someone should investigate whether he was a Liverpool fan as a kid, because there's something behind it.

Agree0 Disagree0

The spurs goal was also taken about 10 yards from where it was supposed to be. Plus when we tried a quick free kick it was pulled back! absolute BS!

Agree0 Disagree0

Of course he's a RS, it's pretty common knowledge!.
