I have to say that in my opinion McGeady cannot play in the same side as Coleman. Does any one else think that he inhibits Colemans play, yesterday Coleman hardly made a move forward until McGeady went off. He then got forward at least 3 times, won and should have had another penalty, and played like suddenly he'd had the shackles removed.

{Ed025's Note - i disagree GTB, mcgeady should be playing alongside coleman...and milkmen, plasterers and brickies.. :)

just a thought but why not play mcgeady on the opposite side, he will cut inside leaving the left flank for Baines to run into, and at the same time as you say will not inhibit colemans runs (win win in my view). Added to this you can play etoo on the right who while not offering raw pace such as megeedy or coleman, offers the experience and nouce to play through balls for our attacking players such as ross, coleman, rom etc.

Nice one Ed, well above your normal standard, but you forgot the Butcher, Baker and Candlestick Maker

I disagree with those posters who only want the club to prioritise the UEFA Europa League (and the FA Cup) ahead of the Premier League. Of course it would be great to win a cup (especially with the UEL winners getting a UEFA Champions League spot), but luck is often the most critical factor in knockout competitions (and bad luck is fatal), whereas it usually evens itself out during a 38-match league season. We could get a tough cup draw, we could have injuries and suspensions at the most crucial times, we could get a bad refereeing decision - all of which might mean elimination. Besides, apart from Chelsea who are romping away, the Champions League qualifying places seem to be up for grabs this season - with clubs like Southampton and Swansea City as well as the usual suspect (including us) all being in the mix. By all means select our strongest available team for the cup matches, but not to the detriment of a good league campaign in my humble opinion.
Besides, this season's UEL campaign is to a very large degree about our squad learning how to cope with midweek European matches (especially the travel for away matches and the disruption to normal training & resting/recovery routines) followed by a (usually very competitive) weekend match in the Premier League. Until we have learnt to handle that, I don't think we're ready for the UEFA Champions League. Still, I am looking forward to us being in it when we are ready ;-)

Can we get off our players backs a little bit? For me we are prioritising the right competition. What is the point in finishing top 6? I would rather finish 12th and win the Europa or at least give it a real go and if our league form drops because of it then what the heck, were we going to win the league this season?
Also I have done a little digging. So far this season across all competitions Aiden McGeady has scored 1 and assisted 3, Pienaar has scored 0 and assisted 2, Leon Osman 1 goal 1 assist. So who exactly do we want as a stand in for Mirallas? To say we should play Naismith ahead of McGeady is short sighted, we need at least one player in the attacking 4 willing to hog the line and try and take a man on crossing from the byline. Naismith, Eto'o, Barkley, Osman and Pienaar are not going to do that so we will have zero width.
We can only use what we have, injuries are a nightmare this season none more so than Mirallas for me as he is the only attacking player we have that can stretch a defense.
I was a bit disappointed when Barry came off that we didn't put Ross in the middle, we didn't need two holding midfielders yesterday, and put Naismith on in the attacking quartet.
Nobody covered themselves in glory yesterday, Coleman my personal favorite was absolutely awful, lost the ball so many times and offered nothing yet he isn't being slated. I thought Ross showed a few glimpses but was fairly quiet, Eto'o did ok and I thought McGeady did ok.
All in all I just find the negativity so annoying, be realistic as to where we are as a club, 2 points dropped last week at home, not this week away.

Great post svenny, agree with all of it

It is evident that Roberto wants to win Europe. At present we are still sat pretty in prem league without hitting any consistent form.
Once this happens a surge up the league will occur and it will be all about keeping the momentum going. I think we may add one or two in January, but we do still have injuries and this isn't helping.
Rom is still young and I thought against Lille he showed glimpses of how his game is improving. Eto will definiately help him.
Ross B still recovering and will find form so at present things aren't so bad but we can do better. Grade - B.

Totaly disagree deggsy mate the diffarence between 12th an 6th is ten million pound an a club with our limited funds ten mill is a huge amount to give up

10 mill the difference between 6th and 12th in the league. what's the prize money if you qualify for europa league or the initial stages of the champions league if we win the europa?

Nice one Shakey, that's exactly the point. The league is guaranteed income. No business on the planet would prioritise less a guaranteed income streem. Especially one that yealds as much as the premier league.

Got to love all the 'sell lukaku' and 'what a waste of money' chants coming from some of you. Comparing him to james vaughan (who never peaked early at all, he was permanently injured) and saying look who we could of bought. don't be silly, we bought a kid, a friggin kid, he's 21 and youse are expecting what? The perfect player? don't be stupid, he's still got plenty of time to develop his game. Yes he's frustrating, but he gets us goals and loves it here, who could we have bought to get us 20 goals a season? Who were the suggestions last season? Rhodes, ings, fletcher, welbeck and remy? I bet rom gets more premier league goals than all them combined (excluding rhodes of course), give him a chance ffs he's only a kid. Say we sell him in january for 15m, who do we sign? Who?, he's our player, he's young and love it here, get behind him. Cheer up, you can watch england draw 0-0 with slovenia soon

Good post Swan I totally agree Rom is still young and has great potential. IOM buying him was a very positive move, how often have we bought an up and comming youngster with a proven record? Give the boy time and our support he will come good again.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to agree Svenny. Too many negative responses on here at present slagging off players. We've produced some good performances of late and not been beat since UTD away.
The Europa should be our priority, at least until January when the FA Cup starts; by which point we should also be looking at the Europa knockout stages. This competition brings a CL place next season as well.
You're correct by saying that 5th/6th in the League is as high as we can reasonably be expected to finish - although as with last season, 4th would be an unexpected bonus.
But let's stop this 'player bashing'. It's what the reds do and we know we're better than that and better than them.

Sure he will get better but if and when he hits that potential, he will want a move to a 'bigger club' with ridiculous wage.

Imagine what player/players we could have bought with 28 mil!. A top class CB and striker would have been within reach with that money

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Remind me but when we bought him I don't recall anybody complaining about it. In fact supporters where begging Martinez to sign him. Naismith, Osman, jags, now Luk. All have had stick and we slag off the Reds? Barkley be ready it's your turn next. Pathetic.

People need to be patient with Lukaku. Can't people see that Martinez has wanted to get him involved in our passing game this season with his back to goal. His touch and his passing is not good, let's be honest but it's still an improvement on what it would have been last season - Lille was a good example on Thursday. The only difference is that last year he was getting in better positions because he wasn't as involved in the build up. I am worried that it will kill his confidence but I have no doubt that he'll be a goal scorer when we start letting him get behind defenders and using his strengths - his pace and power.

Does no one else agree?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Totally Aussie. Lukaku is still a player in the making. He'll come good under Big Duncan's tuition and E'to's nouse.
28m was a big fee but considering his age and the way he was messed about at Chelsea plus the fact the he is still carrying some sort of toe injury; means he will take further time to gel into Roberto's playing style.
I have every belief that he will prove his worth in the long run and people will then look back thinking that the transfer fee was money well spent.

People slag of Mcgeady . But for ffs Lukaku cost us 28 mill I give up 28 mill for what he is playing like a 28 p striker at least Mcgeady was for little or nothing getting really fed up with him I say sell him as soon as we can and get some money back of him . And invest it in a proper striker he is not up to the job simples.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

10 Nov 2014 09:14:30
And buy who? We would get 15-18m at most, who do we buy who is up to the job and will get 20 goals a season?
