Osman was just a yard of pace short of being a great player in his prime, but still gave everything and had good control and vision and scored important goals. Piennar brought out the best in baines and same issue. another yard would have made him a great, but had guile and flair. Pace from a standing start makes so much difference. hopefully our newly created midfield will play less sideways and have some speed and creativity under koeman.
Hope koeman can get Barkley into shape and get him more involved, looked laborious during much of last season, and his head dropped too easily.

I agree. But how many ex players can we employee behind the scenes. The new regime will be running a bussiness more than a retirement home for former players. the 2 player mentioned have been loyal to our club in a world when players jump ship at the slightest oppotunity. wish them well in there futures and thank them for there efforts over the years.

Have to agree wholeheartedly with your assessment mate. I would add the following criticisms of our current players signed by RM. This is why I feel our squad has deteriorated so much and people think I am negative. It is actually a genuine assessment and how I see things. I will also include the players who have since gone. Alcaraz: was never a top player. Was slow and certainly on his last legs. Robles: generally adequate and has improved. Still young and could therefore be of use. Kone: greatly overated by RM and although strong and with a neat touch at times, uninspiring. Very poor goals return for a forward. McCarthy: great engine. Will run and run all day. Tackles back after long sprints regularly. However, seems unwilling to pass forwards and run at defenders. Always holds the ball up and plays square or backwards? Coached or confidence? Barry: was obviously a class act and we have squeezed just about as much out of him as possible. Was never a great goalscorer but again a great engine. But the gearbox is broken. he can't get out of third gear now. Woefully lacking in pace. McGeady: signed on reputation? His fitness was so poor when he arrived and I understand he is still eating all the pies. Confidence shot to bits. Besic: Still young and could play a part. Another great engine but inconsistent. Great game one week terrible the next. Another poor goals return for a player with his ability. Cleverly: another great engine who will play any position and run and run all day. Very poor goals return and not too much guile for a forward midfielder. Funes Mori: great signing and RM's one star in my view. Good all round defender who chips in with a fair share of goals from set pieces and general play. Lukaku: When he wants can be awesome. But he has the attitude of a 10 year old sulking kid who walks off holding the ball saying, "it's my ball, game over! ". Niasse: 13 million? What? I have not seen enough to really judge him, but his feet don't seem attached to his brain. they are working at different speeds! Deulofeu: what a cross this kid has. I wish I could say more about him. When he first burst onto the scene there was real hope. But stop his crosses and you stop him playing. Lennon: became 3rd choice at Spurs for a reason. His confidence was shot to bits and at times he has done a sterling job for us. But is he real top quality? Will we challenge the likes of Spurs by signing their 3rd choice winger? Well that is my assessment of why I think we have gone backwards big time in the last 3 years. The quality of players like Osman and Pienaar who may have lacked a little pace. but were included in a team that maximised the pace of the overlapping fullbacks are retiring. The players brought in are infrior. That is why we ended up 11th. Simple really. We need 5 or 6 top quality players. Koeman had better get on with the job soon!

Hey

. simple answer is "no" we did nothing illegal by discussing RK with a 3rd party (his agent) . if these rumours are true re JS n Barca. then as long as Barcelona approached JS' agent rather than the player himself, then fair enough. IF that rumour is true.

At present, our 25-player aged-over-21 squad contains 6 centre-midfielders:
McCarthy, Barry, Barkley, Clerverly, Gibson and Besic. Each is versatile and some can play as emergency defenders, some as wide players and some as attackers (number 10s) , but they are primarily centre midfielders.
We have several U21/ U18 centre-midfielders - Davies, Ledson, Walsh, Williams, etc. - who can be backups.
So, which, if any, of the 6 older players would you move out and who, if anyone, would you like to bring in as an experienced centre-midfielder?

Out Gibson and mo besic. i'm wijnaldum (newcastlw) and Jordan ferri (lyon player)

Wjnaldum can play cam, cm or on the left. Ferri is cdm bur his range of passing and long range shooting is boss.

10 Jun 2016 18:54:15
I'm not sold on wijnaldum but he does add a threat. As for Ferri doesn't look like he would add goals to our midfield and we need that next season. He has only scored 6 goals his whole career.

I'm holding any thoughts of players until after the Euros. There's no point in rushing purchases.

I'm happy with them all and wouldn't sell any. Barry is on his last season so we will have one less after next season as it is. Barkley centre midfielder? He can be but not in the current 5 midfield system.

It depends what way the new manager plays. Only way I'd like to see centre midfield strengthened is maybe get competition for Barkley.

As I said Barry is gone soon enough so I'd hold onto the other 5 as injuries will inevitably happen.

At long last, Neville Southall included in the hall of fame, absolute disgrace how long ng he was overlooked, one of the finest goalkeepers in the world, better late than never.

Next has to be be the Everton team of 84-85.

10 Jun 2016 16:12:05
There's little doubt in my mind that the overdue recognition of Neville Southall - and the apparent lack of recognition of Everton Football Club - is due to a very large extent to our great mid-1980s side being denied the opportunity to compete in (and possibly win? ) the European Ciup due to the ban on English clubs. We never got the chance to establish the club;'s profile as a major force internationally.
Of course, we've had plenty of time to move on since then, but it really did cause the team to break up with players (and the manager) leaving, which directly led to us also falling behind domestically. Perhaps with Mr Moshiri now calling the shots, we may have the chance to really progress.

{Ed001's Note - he just really was that good. I am astonished at some of the players that are only just getting admitted to this hall of fame thing. It is bizarre that a keeper of the class of Southall has had to wait so long. I guess he just wasn't around at the right time to get the hype.}

As it stands, we have a full (25 player) squad of aged-over-21 players. (I'm excluding Hibbert, Osman, Pienaar and Mattioni, as they're out-of-contract. ) '
So, if we wanted to bring in new aged-over-21 players, we'd have to create space in the squad by moving out some players (on permanent transfers or on long-term loans) .
We have 9 defenders:
Coleman, Browning, Baines, Oviedo, Garbutt, Jagielka, Stones, Mori and Pennington. Some of these can play in several positions, but are primarily defenders (full-backs or centre-backs) .
We also have several U21 and U18 defenders (Galloway, Connolly, Kenny, Holgate, etc. ) who can be backups for the first-team squad.
So, of the 9 defenders in the first-team squad:
(1) Which, if any, would you move out (permanently or loan) ; and
(2) Who, if anyone, would you bring in - assuming you don't rely on our U21/ U18 players as backups?
(Remember that we have to balance the outgoings and incomings to stay within the 25-player limit for registered aged-over-21 players) .

Loan out Holgate and browning and pennington and bring in van dijk and lewiss dunk

We've got ball player and need a couple of yard dog's who will stick there head on a brick if it stops a goal.

Cowpat, how many places have we left if any in our 25 man squad? Assuming all players stay. Interested in how many players we could potentially sign.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jun 2016 21:40:45
I'd loan Browning and Pennington out and try and sign a right back and goalie.

Midfield I'd remain the same. Maybe competition for Barkley otherwise I'd see how midfield fairs for next season under new manager and system.

Up front I would sell Kone and sign a striker instead. I'd give Niasse a proper chance. I know he looks like a lemon but I'd make sure after spending £13.5m so give him a proper chance next season.

That is assuming we keep everyone else. Obviously anyone who leaves apart from them would have to be replaced.

So that's a goal keeper, right back and striker. Competition for attacking midfielder/ Barkley if possible as well please santy! Thank you.

WIth the departure of Howard, we clearly need to recruit an experienced goalkeeper.
We have quite a few young (U21 and U18) goalkeepers at the club, but none of them appear ready just yet to be first-team regulars - or even the backup on the first-team substitutes' bench. It'd be great if one of these youngsters was ready now, but goalkeepers do tend to take longer to develop than outfield players generally do.
So, which of these options do you prefer:
(1) Retain Robles, recruit another goalkeeper, and have the two compete to be first choice; or
(2) Release Robles, recruit two goalkeepers, and have the two new ones compete to be first choice?
(I'm assuming that although one of our goalkeepers might be preferred as first-choice, we would surely need the backup to be good enough to come into the team if injuries, suspensions or loss-of-form occur. )

Perhaps the Eds (who seem better informed and more level-headed) can comment, but here's my take on all the stories that appear in the media about transfers, etc.
Most (if not all! ) of what we ordinary fans hear and read is from the Internet, social media and the traditional media (press, television, radio) . Very few of us have genuine contacts - despite what many fans/ posters claim about who they know or who they're related to or who they've met!
The stories on the Internet are overwhelmingly from websites that trawl for information and just repeat whatever they find. These websites haven't actually sourced the original stories themselves and don't research or check them - they just repeat them. There are verry few truly original stories. The fact that a particular story appears on many different websites doesn't make it any more true, but just shows how the story once started grows like wildfire.
As for social media, that is usually as reliable as a chocolate teapot for accurate stories. I'm not saying there aren't some genuine stories from reliable people on Twitter, etc., but genuinely accurate information is few and far between.
As for the traditional media, these days they too trawl for information and repeat it as "gossip". There are very few instances of a journalist actually sourcing, researching or checking an original story that they report.
An honourable mention should go to journalists on local newspapers (and occasionally local radio) who are genuinely close to their local clubs and do speak with their contacts at them and do try to present original and researched/ checked and accurate stories.
Also, although it may pain some fans/ posters to read this - when I hear "Sky sources tell us" during a report, I tend to believe that their information has genuinely been received first-hand by a reporter who's actually in contact with the club and/ or people involved in the transfer (or whatever the story is) . I'm not saying that these "sources" aren't using the media to manipulate situations, but I do believe that the "source" actually directly involved in the stories being reported - or at least very closely involve d to those people that are - has provided the information.
Once agai, in my humble opinion, just because a rumour appears in many places doesn't make it any more likely.
However, the banter that it leads to is great fun and we all enjoy the craic :-)

Just seen Lukaku's latest comment while with Belgium I think he's start to get worried he isn't going anywhere apparently he was asked which team he plays when on FIFA his response was "I like Chelsea because they are good in defense and attack" then was asked who his 5-a-side team would be made up of and he picked himself and 4 Chelsea players (not all current) talk about dropping hints.

Hes an embarrassment. We need rid of him as soon as we can. It irks me to give in but I truly think we will be better without him. I've not come across someone so brazen about his will to leave whilst our back is turned. Yet when he's on club duty he doesn't seem to send out these messages. All a bit spineless to me.

From an employers point of view, he really hasn't been a good example of professionalism. The way he clearly downed tools when he came back from international duty was borderline deriliction of duty.

I defended this guy vehemently last season and the beginning of the recent campaign when he was having poor performances but amongst the goals. I can't defend this sullying of services to any club willing to pay. Proper Beaut this guy.

At the start of the season there will be a new manager and probably some new players. No doubt there maybe occasions where mistakes are made as players and manager get to know each other etc. It is important the fans recognise this and be patient. then we don't get reports of fans getting on players backs etc.

Some players may be affected by having played in the euros and not having had the same break as others. Please be patient.
