Hi Eds,

Any idea if Gueye will leave this window? From what the media have said it looks like he is keen to move to PSG (who wouldn't)

This does worry me as we will desperately need a replacement, and I know there's interest in Doucoure but they aren't particularly the same type of player

I have seen links to Wilmar Barrios and Thiago Mendes, are they players we are keen on/ in talks with? Can't imagine we would sanction a sale for Gueye if a replacement wasn't readied.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - it does look like we may lose him blu and if we do we need a replacement in, who that will be i would be guessing but we have known this for a while so there should be someone lined up mate..

10 Jan 2019 20:46:07
Barrios will add that bit of steel we need in front of back 4.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 23:35:18
Wonder whether Baines could convert like lahm did? Could offer a temporary solution if we need to wait until the summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 00:34:10
Doucoure is available and would be the man for me. He would offer the attacking threat that Gueye never could and is a decent age also.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 07:20:42
We have a ready made replacement for Gueye in front of back four or even a partner should he stay. Note the runs Zouma makes forward, it is no coincidence. Chelsea have played him in front of the back four and it shows.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 10:56:31
Baines and Zouma are obvious possibilities. but isn't McCarthy fit again? didn't he play that role when Barry was with us?

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 13:48:22
He did degsyp and could do it again. Needs an iron hand though to prevent him galloping off and around although not the Davis headless chicken game.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 19:01:16
Davies has ability DFS he just needs to listen to his coaches. If you remember the goal he got against Man City when he first burst onto the scene, he was 18? Ok he is 21 now and does as you say run around a bit too much, but I thought Gomez would be able to help him positionally. we will have to wait and see. In theory Davies could do the holding midfielder. He is strong, good engine, fast enough and can tackle a bit. With good coaching over say 2 seasons he would be an excellent holding midfielder. if he listens.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - hes a bit lightweight for me degsy and gives the ball away too much, im not giving up in him just yet but its time for him to step up to the plate mate..

10 Jan 2019 16:39:09
Good post BigH mate, the goals will be difficult to get with this current squad, I reckon Marco will be in for at least one deal this window and maybe more depending on who goes out, but as degsy says we have to address our defence we cannot keep conceding so many goals, still a lot of work to be be done, but hey most of on here realise there is no quick fix, top 10 finish this year and then kick on as the team gets strengthened.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

10 Jan 2019 19:24:38
Cheers GB. As you say, tighten up, consolidate, then push on.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 19:38:40
Yep mate, hopefully it will soon be Marco's own team, not an inherited one eh.

11 Jan 2019 07:33:02
Oh so Silva is going to buy a whole new 11 first team players. I don't get what you mean by soon be Silvas Team. Sounds very like a ready made apology to me. The stubborness in sticking with a zonal marking system is ridiculous, it doesn't suit the players he brought in, that coupled with no direction on the pitch, still leads to our inability to deal with set pieces. I assume most saw the SSN analysis.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 11:00:42
I never saw it DFS but have been banging on for ages that everyone keeps talking strikers when we need to go back to basic defending strategies! That will win us more games. Silva is not stupid though. He needs his players in to do the job he wants in the way he decides. So far he has turned us round from and ageing bunch of no hopers who could not get a shot on target to a quite entertaining up and down the pitch team. If he sorts the defence we will win a load more games. That includes defending set pieces better and having a keeper who communicates better and makes better decisions re coming off his line. I know Pickford is Englands no 1 but in the Premier League he has been to blame for many goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 13:52:35
Not sure Pickford is a full shilling in as much as his ability to absorb and retain advice. When you look at some of his actions, it is difficult to believe he has not had the advice and coaching over and over again on the same mistakes and decision making. That goal in the cup didn't need to happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 19:02:44
Agreed, Ed002 said something about him being as thick as custard or similar words!

10 Jan 2019 12:32:58
Gonna play Devils Advocate for a minute here. There are 17 games left (if my maths is correct) and we need at least another 15/ 20 points to be safe (preferably more) . If we don't get a goalscorer in the Jan window where are they going to come from?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - i wish i knew mate..

10 Jan 2019 12:40:08
Scary thought isn't it.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - it certainly is..

10 Jan 2019 13:10:24
DCL richarlison bernard all chip in.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 13:23:13
Hope so Johny. Gylfi could get some. Walcott could start repaying the blind faith MS has in him and bag a few. It could suddenly click for Tosun and he gets some. Clearly I trust we'll be okay and was just asking the Question. On paper we have goals in us, we just need to start converting some and stop the errors at the back.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 13:43:20
The next 5 games we should win so let's see after them where we stand. Who's going to get the goals? We do need a out and out striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i wish i was as optimistic as you penysarn..

10 Jan 2019 13:48:51
Look at your post again BigH. You say we need 15 to 20 points. if we don't get a goalscorer where are they going to come from? In my knowledge of football, if you stop the other team scoring you get at least one point. Likewise, if you score the same number of goals you get one point. If you score 1 more than the other team you get 3 points. I apologise for making this sound so simplistic, but we have scored 31 goals in 21 games. that's not a bad return really and we should be a lot higher in the table with that stat. Our problem is we have also conceded 31 goals. Even with Harry Kane in our team (prob the best center forward in UK at the mo) we might pick up a few more points, but would prob still be conceding around 31 goals. Chelsea have only scored 38 goals. but only conceded 16. that's why their points tally is 14 better than our own. I agree we need a decent center forward. but my priority would be to tighten up at the back. Specifically at set pieces. Pickford and the center backs have been to blame for many of those goals no matter how good they have looked through some games. We seemed to tighten up when Mina started playing but Silva then dropped him? 3 teams above us have scored less goals than us. Another has only scored 1 more than us. So by tightening up a bit we could be in 7th easily. A good center forward would be nice. but tightening up a bit at set pieces would be better for me.

10 Jan 2019 13:53:11
Haha that's not like you Ed. Trust me mate 5 wins before the rubbishy game.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - you know i will hold you to that mate.. :)

10 Jan 2019 14:03:04
I know you will mate : (.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 14:23:52
Fair points Degsyp. I am in full agreement that tightening it up at the back has to be a high priority. If we can get that problem sorted we should win more than we lose and be okay. I hope so anyway.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 16:37:34
penysarn am with u all the way pal 15 points next 5 games tgere ya go done haha.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 19:13:46
Tallk about optimistic Penysam / Johny lol. Here's hoping you're right guys, then we can relax and push on for another 30+ in the final 12 COYB!

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 22:00:23
We were not that bad just as we were not that great when we won a few games in November. We are inconsistent mid table team. Win and defeats in equal measure at moment. As for goals we have 2 of top 10 scorers in pl this season so not bad.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 21:38:07
39 points is enough to be safe. Is that what you are suggesting when you say safe?
8 home games left, we should win 4 at least of those equalling 12 points. That puts us on 39.
Throw in 2 or 3 away wins and some draws and we should be fine.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 00:19:35
I'm sure we will be fine Smit, and of course I hope we are more than just 'safe' and we finish as close to the top 6 as possible. I was just putting it out there mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 08:11:08
Degsyp, I have addressed this before but of we want to tighten up, my solution with the players we have would be a back four Kenny Keane Mina Digne with Zouma in front of the two CB's. Gueye Siggy and then Riccy Tosun/ DCL Lookman. Gomes currently out of form is my reasoning but if in then in for Siggy.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 11:05:32
Who am I to argue DFS. But I also think Pickford has to shoulder some of the blame for dropping points. I also blame the zonal marking situation. But we need to stay calm in all this. This is a situation whereby the manager needs time and space to sort his own things out the way he wants. I trust him at the mo even if I disagree with some of his choices. This is not the same situation as last season where Allardyce split the fans as much as Brexit! We are pretty much united behind Silva and all want him to succeed. that's a positive in itself!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 13:57:45
17 games left and 13 points to get are not the problem. I would be shocked even with Silvas record if we cannot record 4 wins from our remaining. What is a requirement is points, position bring £££'s and importantly the decisions made need to be judged correct.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 09:22:10
Hey Ed 025 have you read the latest report on SSN re our Everton Team, it goes on to give a detailed analysis of of our matches so far, it gives loads of figures etc but it's not very good reading when it gets to our defence, very poor if we can go by that, if that is correct surely we will try and sort it out we definitely need a couple of tweeks mate in this window cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - im not so sure GB, the problem with our defence is that silva does not know his best set up, he has tried loads of permutations but none of them seem to have worked yet, on paper there seems some very good players but as a unit they just dont knit and thats a big worry, i still dont think we will be very active in this window mate if at all..

10 Jan 2019 11:47:41
Hey Ed025 and GB. Do you think maybe the problem with the defence is this zonal-marking malarky? As you say we have some very good players who should be working together much better by now.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im not a big fan of zonal marking BigH so i would say yes, when i played you were assigned a man and he was your responsibility then if he scored you knew who,s fault it was, one of our main problems as i see it is that there is no leader in there either, i dont see anyone getting in the players faces and organizing them like a mick lyons or a dave watson but maybe thats me being outdated mate..

10 Jan 2019 12:12:13
I'd like MS to drop this system for now and as you say go back to basics - man marking. At least then you won't have the smallest guy on your side marking a 6ft 5+inch bruiser sneaking in at the back stick. I have a feeling as I have said previously though that MS is a bit stubborn and he'll stick with the zonal.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - your probably right mate..

10 Jan 2019 12:23:29
PS Ed. you're right re a leader. Someone needs to step up and start taking charge. With Jags barely featuring who else is there? Keane doesn't strike me as leader material. Zouma is temporary - for now and Mina has only been here five minutes so may not feel it's his job.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i have to say mate that even though i hated john terry and everything he stood for as a human he was a great leader on a football pitch, its a player like that i think we are missing...but not the man..

10 Jan 2019 12:38:46
Good example with JT. Can't abide the man himself but as a leader he was top dog. Most if not all top teams have someone like him and we need to find ours.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 12:38:50
I’d have Martin Keowne back. That guy is scary when he’s smiling!

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 13:53:48
Mina was looking good until Man City. but to be fair they make lots of defenders look bad. I think he needs to go back to a traditional back 4 and with Mina plus another. He is a bit of a leader so is the natural choice. I would also go back to traditional marking. The players clearly cannot cope with zonal marking. When the ball hit Gomez on the shin last week he had no one to mark and was surprised the ball came at hi. He was flat footed. Most goals conceded have been from set pieces. It is so obvious to me what is needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i vote for you to mange us next degsy.. :)

10 Jan 2019 15:14:43
Zonal marking doesn't work for us as we don't have a keeper who controls the 6 yard box, look at how many of the set piece goals we have conceded and ask yourself 'should the keeper be going for this?
We had the same issue with Tim Howard who was an excellent shot stopper but conceded far too many goals from positions he should have been commanding.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 15:18:53
Love it Ed, Degsy seems to tick all the boxes for manager lol, only joking degsy mate, i am not keen on zonal marking, i still reckon it was Mina and Zouma's fault for the goal last week, its only my opinion though.

Agree1 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 15:19:55
Old i know but Kompany is a leader.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 04:57:36
He definitely is Smit. Now go get him for us lol.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2019 11:07:31
Hate to say it but a taller keeper would help in this situation. Played with Mina of course. And yes if they get rid of Silva I will apply lol!

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 09:22:57
Nikola Vlasic has been rejuvinated somewhat after failing to impress in the few games he played for us and some say he may be worth giving a second chance to. He felt unloved when Fat Sam took over and even went as far as to say; '' The football played under Big Sam was awful, if it could even be called football '' and '' The football team was terrified by all, including the fans '' in response to the displeasure at that time from the terraces. He likes the way the team now play under Marco Silva but doesn't think he is part of any future plans and expects to be sold asap.

may be showing it in the Russian league mate but our league is a completely different kettle of fish, although I am a fan of the lad and could seriously be considered to play a part in gylfis role.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 11:56:37
I agree that just because things are going okay in the Russian League it doesn't mean much, but I'm torn. I don't think he had a fair chance with us but on the other hand maybe that league suits him and the level he's at?

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2019 12:12:42
Maybe Marco sent him on loan with a view to looking again at him in the summer. Maybe he just doesn't fit his style.
I don't remember seeing anything special from him last season, well apart from when he played against us.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - hes a skillful player smit but i dont know whether or not he fits the premier league, hes too pretty at times and one of our problems is that we have too many of those mate, give me a peter reid or a tim cahill who will work their socks off and are not scared to leave the odd foot in mate..
