I know not as glamorous as VVD or as long term as someone like Michael Keane, but I think we should go in to Jose Fonte now he's put in a transfer request.

Improvement on jags, class at euros, natural leader and rk knows him very well. In fact he was one of best defenders in league under rk.

Doesn't solve issue of ageing team, but would massively improve back line for very little outlay.

Ed, do you know if there is any interest in him? I know utd were linked in summer?

{Ed002's Note - There is interest but not from Everton. If that changes I will let you know.}

1.) 05 Jan 2017 16:38:04
Thanks for the quick response ed. I hope it does change!

{Ed002's Note - Everton are looking to the future with Adam Webster supplemented by interest in the likes of either Michael Keane or else Ben Gibson for the summer - that is the sensible approach and the one I think you should get behind ST.}

2.) 05 Jan 2017 16:58:58
I am fully behind that approach - and Keane or Gibson would be great signings. I've never seen Webster play so can't comment on him

But I do think that Fonte would improve our defensive options particularly for the next 18 months and do so potentially fairly cheaply with jags seemingly going downhill fast.

But it's good to hear that we are working to get good options for the future as well!

3.) 05 Jan 2017 17:01:51
Can we have both in the summer please ed👌.

4.) 05 Jan 2017 17:28:55
Michael Keane seems a real talent. Thanks as always, ed.

08 Dec 2016 07:54:41
Quotes coming out of Holland saying that Riechedly Bazoer Is likely to leave Ajax in Jan. Very highly rated 20 year old, cm in the mould of Vieira. Was chased by all the big clubs last year but has gone off the boil a bit this year. Already a Dutch international with 60+ appearances for Ajax.

Could be another option instead of schneiderlein and would be an upgrade on McCarthy. can any of the eds shine a light on his situation?

{Ed002's Note - I would not hold your breath.}

31 Aug 2016 22:56:33
Disappointed we didn't get targets today, but let's get realistic - it's been a good window and we're definitely stronger now than end of last season. Both on and off the pitch.

Sissoko always seemed like a 3rd or 4th choice. And surely you can't blame him for choosing champions league football. Some of the anger towards him is pathetic, he owes us nothing and owes us no loyalty. If our top transfer target became available today we would have ditched him and moved onto someone else.

And anyone thought that we didn't close the deals because they weren't right for the club? Every player has their value, and if we weren't willing to pay over the odds then that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

We're only disappointed because the media circus around deadline day whips fans into a frenzy.

Let's stay positive. 7 points from 9, stronger on and off the pitch. Things are still looking up. COYB.

1.) 31 Aug 2016 23:10:12
Good post that ST.

2.) 31 Aug 2016 23:11:16
If we had any less than 6 it would be a disaster. You can't judge anything after 3 games.

3.) 31 Aug 2016 23:12:50
Spot on ST we are in a better shape now than we have been for a very long time.

4.) 31 Aug 2016 23:36:05
Good post st and I'm sure we will get 3 points in our next game RK has us playing as a team all we need now is the news of the new stadium and the feel good factor will be back after today's events.

5.) 31 Aug 2016 23:42:17
Bang on Southern_Toffee.

All these absolute belters going on about how we are a laughing stock cause we didn't go an spaff 100m on deadline day.

I would rather keep hold of the money and spend it when we know or have a clear inclination that the player will suit the club and take us to the next level.

We have had a solid window. Stekky has started very well, and he is better than what we had last season.

Williams is a leader, rarely misses games, voice on the pitch and makes us much more solid.

Gueye works his bollocks off and is a steal at 7 million when you look at the likes of Ryan Mason going to Hull for 13 million.

Bolasie gives us something different and makes us a threat on the counter, just like Koeman wants us to play.

Every Newcastle fan i know couldn't wait to see the back of Sissoko, saying he never turned up, only when it suited. Do we really want a player like that, or do we want someone who will play for the shirt and the fans.

Seriously with some fans you can never win, we have made 4 solid signings and then by all accounts another young gem.

Valencia might not be the striker we were looking for, but he is certainly a better option than Niasse or Kone. Pace to burn and can find the net, given the service.

Great start to the season and i think we have a solid side. We have only just come into money, as soon as our league position improves from bottom half of the table, players will be more attracted to us.

Rome wasnt built in a day.

6.) 31 Aug 2016 23:46:46
And when you look at the team Koeman is already having an effect and getting more from the side! Mirallas looks a different player!

7.) 31 Aug 2016 23:54:55
We have drawn 1-1 with Spurs - decent. Scraped wins against an out of sorts Stoke and poor West Brom. And smashed the mighty Yeovil I am over the moon.

8.) 01 Sep 2016 00:44:33
Even though I like our new signings and your post. I cannot help to be cynical. It's seem to me that we have to sell to buy. Also think that the Sissoko deal was smoke screen for us to believed we were in for a big player. When we only getting a loan deal. I just hope that th ground at the dock get the go ahead.

9.) 01 Sep 2016 00:49:06
I think we should be due some commission from Newcastle for getting Spurs to stump up £30m!

10.) 01 Sep 2016 01:47:33
If anyone thinks we have come out of this window well they are deluding themselves.

11.) 01 Sep 2016 03:09:04
Are you kidding? We have come out well.
We have an awesome manager who can change a game and is already improving the players
A DOF to start pushing the club forward
A premier league hardened CB probably one of the best out there
A bargain Midfielder in Gueye who has already been immense this season
A Bolassie who will torment defences all season
We kept Lukaku
And we have some exciting talents in the fringes of the first team!
We have a major shareholder who is wanting to fund new players and a new stadium
Still have a chairman who loves the club, and is at heart an Everton fan
And we haven't forked out on any panic buys!
This was always going to be a tough window and I feel we has come out stronger and stable.

12.) 01 Sep 2016 06:35:15
And we got almost £50m for Stones! (Who wanted to go)

13.) 01 Sep 2016 07:32:14
Agree with all the above ST and I'm sure once the disappointment fades (as usual) we will all crack on with it
Despite a billionaire investor
Despite the highest TV money ever

We have hardly spent a penny. Don't care what you say but THAT is unacceptable.

I get some of it is sound bites from ITK's etc. But Moshiri himself said was anxious to add to squad ( after Bolasie) .

For once we seemed to have money to spend. And yet again it didn't happen.

So crack on with your optimism but I and many more saw this as a real chance to improve and to push ourselves towards top 6. Don't see that happening now, least not this season.

Hopefully by January SW has unearthed a few gems.
Hopefully in near future we will hear about plans for stadium.

But being an Evertonians is like being a crap boxer who keeps having to get up off the canvas.

14.) 01 Sep 2016 07:37:28
Well said southern toffee agree with everything u said this summer had been a summer of change for Everton and a change for the better we have a world class manager a new director of football who arrived late in summer and a owner who has big ambitions for are club with stadium and returning are glory days so the deadline day didn't turn out as we hoped but the work in the transfer market before deadline day has made r squad stronger steklenberg has been class in goal adrissa looks the buy of the season Williams is a vocal leader we have been needing for ages and s one of the best defenders in the league and bolasie gives us another dimension going forward with his pace and power and hopefully enner Valencia can repeat his form from his first season at the hammers where he was excellent what ever happens he still better than kone and niasse know we have some serious pace in the attacking and going to be a big threat on the counter attack in away games. Don't forget this gives Walsh some proper time to addentify his targets for January and summer windows and have deals already set up.

{Ed025's Note - well said duke..

15.) 01 Sep 2016 07:52:33
I'm OK with not spending £30 million on Sissoko. Looked good in Euros, poor in the prem. Just hope big Ash kicks him all over the place in the new year. What does annoy me is how we were allowed to be strong along by Napoli and Porto.

16.) 01 Sep 2016 08:08:47
I like the way everyone trying to be happy but let's get it right this was a shocking transfer window considering we were meant for a busy summer an top signing, we only strengthend with gueye, bolasie has 2 good game go missing for 6/ 7 game for 30mil we over payed, sketelburg is as good as Howard make some good save but always makes a mistake, we have no back up striker if lukaku get injured no back up right bk no top class keeper an with jag or William get injured were bk to square 1, the only good thing about this window is we got a top top manager in Koeman, Koeman has to be gutted.

17.) 01 Sep 2016 09:05:06
No evidence anything has changed. We had to sell to buy and didn't spend any more than we got in. I want to believe it'll be different but don't see any evidence that it is. That's why I'm confused as to why so many fans have blind faith that money will be available and we will have an impact in the transfer market.

18.) 01 Sep 2016 09:33:28
ROBBO05 who did we sell to pay for Sissoko i'm pretty sure we would have actually paid for him but he decided to go elsewhere you statement is flawed.

19.) 01 Sep 2016 09:39:03
Rob I believe there is money there just don't know how much could be 100mil could not be who knows Everton certainly never came out with how much we have to spend plus rob did u expect us to go do a spurs from a few years ago when they sold bale and go buy for sake of buying which didn't turn out to well for them I know there's a lot of frustration but we need to be patient and let Walsh do his job in the upcoming transfer windows and line up some transfers.

20.) 01 Sep 2016 10:01:41
spot on duke. It appears most people who are upset are upset because we didn't spend every penny available to us - regardless of who we spent it on.

I for one would prefer to keep the money to spend on the right players in January or next summer, rather than spend it for the sake of it.

Also - after the Emirates move we saw Arsenal spend drop. We've seen something similar this season with Spurs, Chelsea and to an extent Liverpool (all with new stadiums/ stands to fund) . It could be that money is being put aside for a stadium. We don't know what is going on behind the scenes.

And if that is the case then I would prefer a Bramley Moore Stadium over Moussa Sissoko any day of the week.

21.) 01 Sep 2016 10:33:21
Am up set that the team wasn't strengthend an that we didn't get good player to cover area what are needed.

22.) 01 Sep 2016 12:30:54
But we have a good team already! I am glad we didn't blow £100m just because we have it!
Koeman said there is time needed to build and money doesn't make you an overnight success. Valencia on loan makes sense to me, little outlay for a decent backup who if needs be we cut next summer when we are in a better position!
I am sure Moshiri will have learnt from this as well and feel our pain and Walsh hasn't had much time to work yet so let's get behind the team and be positive!

23.) 01 Sep 2016 12:47:52
Be interesting to know if we had drawn or lost all our games this season fans would be so understanding about not bringing in quality players. It's a marathon not a sprint. I just hope we don't get injuries to our top players and lukaku pulls his finger out.

30 Jun 2016 12:15:31
Ed - can you update us on whether we have any interest in Schneiderlin and Grosicki? I've been seeing it in a few places now so just wondering if there is any truth behind these rumours?

{Ed002's Note - (a) I am not aware of any approach for Schneiderlin. (b) Rennes say that two clubs including Everton have enquired after Grosicki and it is known that RK was interested when at Southampton.}

28 May 2016 08:14:39
Odds for Mancini have shortened significantly in the past few days, do you know if there's anything behind this eds?

{Ed025's Note - its just a guessing game at the moment ST, only the guys at the top know whats really going on and they are keeping their cards close to their chests mate..

1.) 28 May 2016 09:12:10
I'm actually in awe of FM's resolute way of doing things .

# He removed RM sooner rather than later
# He keeps tight lipped on his intentions
# He as we know is nobody's fool
# He doesn't cave in to the pressure that he must now feel on the 'manager question'.

2.) 28 May 2016 11:35:06
I think we'll start to see some movement next week as contracts in football tend to run from June to June.
Something I did hear midweek was that Peel Holdings bigwigs were in town and not very discreet about their enthusiasm on the docklands project and they expect rapid progress.

3.) 28 May 2016 15:17:48
Is just a basic move by betting companies for poeple to think that someone is a dead cert only for them to go back out in the odds and someone else to become short odds, nothing new they do this all the time.

4.) 28 May 2016 21:23:45
Absolutely spot on Mike. Just bookies drumming up custom to boost their profits by installing false favourites.

So it looks like Rom has almost certainly gone. I for one think he has been excellent for us and we have been excellent for him and I don't bare any grudge against him. Time to move on to our next CF.

Eddy posted a great list of possible strikers to replace him a really days ago. So who do people want as our new CF?

Personally I'd be delighted with 2 of
Rashford loan
Dembele (Celtic - but I think unrealistic)

I also like the look of Patrick Roberts as a left footed winger that we need.

What are other thoughts?

1.) 06 Jun 2017 17:13:14
Batshayui and ihenacho I'd like but West Ham look favourites for inenacho! They seem keen on this William Jose fella never seen him play or even heard of him before ed002 told us. I would also try to get Nathan ake our zouma from. Chelsea I just hope we get the replacements in on the 1st of July to get decent time together before the europa and so we've got a striker in to play.

2.) 06 Jun 2017 17:18:19
I'm with you ST hold no grudge just get frustrated with the situation an the way that agent goes bout his ways.

Giroud for me would be a quality signing, maybe unrealistic though. I personally don't think we will end up with any of the above. Can't see rashford on loan happening. Ihenacho I can't see RK agreeing to a buy back option. Batsuayi could be a shot an he looked good when he played worth a risk I think. I'm not even sure the type of striker we need.

I would take Vardy for a season or 2. doesn't look like he's lost a yard an stays injury free. Good stop gap for me.

Everton the gear.

10 Jan 2017 19:25:13
Ed002 made a comment earlier that a lot of our fans are ungrateful - and I completely agree.

Maybe its because I'm too young to remember our best years. My my earliest Everton memory is dad jumping around the house after barry Horne scored against Wimbledon. I don't remember the FA cup win properly. My Everton childhood consisted of players like Pistone, Gemmill and Gary Naysmith with Steve Watson finishing the season as top scorer.

If you'd told me then we would be spending 11mil on teenagers and 20+mil on french internationals from man utd I wouldn't have believed you.

For the first time in my 27 year life we are looking up as a club. We have a man who owns nearly half the club who has a proper plan of improving us as a club top to bottom. When you look at the likes Blackburn, Leeds, Charlton and Forest this is a remarkable thing in the world of football nowadays.

So I'm massively enjoying where we're going, even though there will be bumps, and am grateful that this is happening to my club. And taking longer than 2 weeks to sign Morgan Schneiderlin isn't going to change that

1.) 10 Jan 2017 20:26:42
you missed a treat. Howard, Kendall, Ball.

2.) 10 Jan 2017 20:39:06
Southern feel a little sorry for you mate. I've been watching the blue boys side 1964, and in that time I've seen some wonderful players/ teams and it has to be said some dross. Still remember my first Wembley trip when we beat Wednesday after being two nil down. Even then my family were saying don't worry we will beat this lot.

3.) 10 Jan 2017 20:49:04
1966 Woburnblue, I had joined up in June at the age of 16. Just come in from Jankers (always in trouble) heard it from one of the lads that had a weekend radio, made my day, even promised to be a good boy for a while.

4.) 10 Jan 2017 20:53:23
Hi Woburn those were the days mate, GuernseyBlue

20 Dec 2016 12:27:44
So this may be a controversial post, but I think nothing sums up our current situation more than Aaron Lennon last night.

First things first, I'm not blaming him for the defeat, I actually quite like the guy and he was by no means one of our worst players yesterday, but.

. I don't think we are where we are because Ross has gone off the boil. If Ross was playing at his best or if Rom closed down more, would that make us a top 4 team? I don't think so.

I think the problem we have throughout the team / squad is far too many bang average players. Sid put a great post earlier about how many of our squad "must be kept at all costs", and the consensus was 3, maybe 4, which means 21+ players that we feel can fairly easily be replaced.

Our squad is full of Aaron Lennons (or for Lennon read Kone/ Stek/ Valencia/ Cleverley etc etc) . They work fairly hard, and difficult to fault them on that front, but they provide a painful lack of quality. Lennon is considered by most to have had a good game last night. Yet he didn't create a single opportunity or really cause them any problems at all - he showed zero quality in the final third. But we expect that and so therefore he did alright.

The problem last night wasn't effort or work rate, it was just a woeful lack of quality - and that's not we need to address, particularly in the final 3rd. We need midfielders who can create and (shout out to Degsy) score goals! We need a GK and CB who can command the box (Williams is starting to do that now) .

So apologies for picking on you Aaron, but for me he is a symptom of the wider problems that we need to fix.

1.) 20 Dec 2016 13:03:32
I think it is a symptom of the entire team ST rather than just one. I'm not sure if it's the system we use and the players aren't good enough to implement it or the system just does not work. Even under RM, the likes of Ross, Gerri and Kev weighed in with a few assists. None of them have got many this year, possibly Bolasie has made the most goals this season. RK has got a bigger job on his hands than any of us imagined.
Last night, we played quite well without really threatening their goal. Our lack of creativity is worrying as the longer the game goes without us scoring we just know we are liable to concede. I can certainly see a lot of this team being moved on and replaced over the next few windows.
It's no use pointing the finger at individuals but I felt we went too defensive, maybe too pedestrian when Barry came on. Jimmy Mc will always cover more grass than GB and we lost that energy and intensity. It is what it is I suppose, we will bounce back and our manager will sort out the mess eventually. Hopefully!

2.) 20 Dec 2016 13:09:33
Bang on 100% right on all points in my view mate. Would add a few more comments but what you say is so very true.

3.) 20 Dec 2016 13:14:21
That's a top post. Couldn't agree more ST. What I would do for a Timmy Cahill right now. Too much is put on Lukaku shoulders. We need a window for creative players. We need midfielders and wide men with an eye for goal. And we also need to get into the penalty area more often with more players. Let's get some pens and cause the opposition havoc.

4.) 20 Dec 2016 14:51:43
This is also the reason why I would be so disappointed if Ross does end up leaving. He is one of the very few in our squad in can provide that quality, even if it has been a while since he has. There should be a lot of players in front of him on the list of departures to improve the squad.

16 Aug 2016 09:40:09
Anyone else keep checking Danny Gabbidons Twitter? Haha there's a sentence I never thought I'd say!

I know it's all a load of rubbish and nothing that exciting will happen. And yes Twitter is the worst place to get the truth. But sometimes it's just really fun to live in a crazy dream land where Everton are linked with James, Draxler and Isco!

I know it will never happen but let's enjoy it and have a laugh while we can!

1.) 16 Aug 2016 10:29:58
I think Gibbidon has left himself wide open with his comments last night he has us all on the edge of our seats wondering what is going on behind the scenes and who the player he has alluded to is. For me i will wait till a player is wearing the blue jersey but can't wait for sat and west brom.

2.) 16 Aug 2016 11:35:24
James Collins? Hahaha.

3.) 16 Aug 2016 12:57:20
haha Fazza, knowing us it will be Gabbidon himself coming out of retirement.

The excitement of forming a formidable partnership with Jags was just too much for him.

4.) 16 Aug 2016 17:31:41
James can't see him getting a game with Arouna Kone there!

09 Aug 2016 12:43:53
Good luck to Stones - wish him all the best. Has the potential to be world class in a year or 2, but realistically he was never going to reach that level with us so good luck to him. Under Guardiola and with a team who will defend less and where he will therefore be under less pressure I think he will thrive. Although the fee is massive I think it is a good deal for all parties.

Williams is a fantastic signing - a leader and exactly what we need. Would be delighted with him and Indi.

Don't need Kone as well, 18mil is far too much. Between Jags, Funes, Williams, Indi, Holgate and Pennington we have CB covered. Also think Galloway on loan makes a lot of sense to give him 1st team football with a strong squad. Also points to Holgate being given a bigger role to play.

Pleased with the business starting to be done!

1.) 09 Aug 2016 13:09:45
Kone would be a great signing. Had a good season with Sunderland and is a powerhouse.

2.) 09 Aug 2016 13:57:37
Jagielka has had his day I'm afraid. Don't be surprised if he went in this window. You'd want Williams as a Captain and I wouldn't be surprised if that was a part of him coming. Funes Mori needs more time out of the first 11 so Kone would be my preffered with PL experience.

3.) 09 Aug 2016 13:57:51
stevie - can't say I saw much of him other than when he scored twice against us. I know he is highly rated in Sunderland. My opinion is mostly based on the fact that I had never heard of him before he joined for 5mil just 7 months ago! Probably a fairly ignorant view haha

Happy to put all my trust in those in charge as they clearly have more knowledge on the player than me. And if he does join then I hope he adds steel to the defence.

Also the more I think about it - having pushed the Stones price up to almost 50mil, we can hardly complain about being pushed up to 18mil by other teams!

Completely agree tadpole. We need someone a bit more experienced and proven at this level at least in the squad.

Also think we should be having 3 strikers. Assuming 1 is Sandro, the other 2 should be 1 youth and 1 experience, offering different skillset (i. e. 1 pacey and 1 who can hold it up) .

Ideal would be Dembele and Giroud alongside Sandro!

I think he would be a fantastic signing Tbone. He's a lot better than what we already have.

I think he has probably become a bit complacent in the past few seasons with no challenge at club or international level. But ignoring all the TV adverts and the media stories he is a top quality goalkeeper.

He makes mistakes like all goalkeepers, his mistakes are a lot more high profile. but would be a great signing and potential number 1 for the next 8 years.

I think Loftus-Cheek has the potential to be a quality player with playing time - but I agree with CFCAdam that he probably isn't good enough for us yet. I see him joining lower Prem team for a season (Brighton? ) .

A player in a similar position that could be a very good squad signing for us would be Chalobah. With McCarthy and Besic maybe moving on and Barry now past it, I think he could be a really good option for back-up to Morgan, Gueye and Davies.

bluegray - I get where you're coming from, but you have to start somewhere. No one is going to come fresh into the Champions League and win it - no matter how many seasons Europa League football they have played. The jump in quality to the very top is just huge.

Take Spurs as the example you brought up. They are perennial qualifiers for Europa League and have a number of years experience in that competition, yet they didn't do well this season in the Champions League.

But, even though they really struggled, I bet their team is significantly stronger as a result. They would have learned more from playing in the group stage this season than 2 seasons of Europa (not that I'm knocking Europa - I just think there's a massive jump up to the top 16 in Champions League) . I think any team would improve more from a painful night away to Bayern than they would a comfortable night playing someone more at their level - and so I would prefer that.

Saying that I think we're currently short of Europa standards - we'd do well to get beyond group stages based on where we are today. So if we get into Europa we'll develop and learn a huge amount from it. As degsy says - we are many many years from being a top European club again, but you only get better by playing teams better than you.

Ed - is there any update on Zouma and Batshuayi since them being on a plane towards Liverpool?

{Ed002's Note - No sightings as yet - we need the feedback of the people on the ground.}

Ed - if that's true then I will be absolutely delighted. Do you know if they are discussing loan or permanent moves?

{Ed002's Note - The plane would have landed by now - I am suprised there have been no sightings. Is there a private airfield in Liverpool as well has John Lennon? A Ringo or something?}

Agree johny. My gut feeling is similar to when we were after Gabbiadini. We have a prolific striker at the moment - we don't need to break the bank for a 2nd. What we do need is a foil for Lukaku, a partner who can support him, have the movement to take players away, work hard to close down so Rom doesn't always have to, and also take some of the goal burden by scoring ~10 a season.

No idea if Belfodil will provide this, but it appears to me that this is the road they are going down with him looking at his stats.
