Ed - just wondering if we have an interest in Fabian Delph?

It is being reported on SSN and would be quite an interesting signing - a departure from our ethos so far (bad) , but would improve our squad and by all accounts is an excellent dressing room presence.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach but I am aware of an "agent" having said three sides have an interest in him "if the price were reasonable" - so certainly a maybe.

If my two cents are worth anything Everton should have pushed harder for Morgan Sanson after enquiring.}

1.) 09 Jul 2019 14:16:18
Thanks Ed - great information as always.

Always interesting to hear your views on players as well as they are invariably names that we don't hear much about.

I've recently been reading a brilliant book about the use of data in scouting (Football Hackers: The Science and Art of a Data Revolution by Christoph Biermann) . It talks about teams (Brentford, Liverpool, Dortmund, FC Midtjylland etc. ) and individuals (Lucien Favre, Sven Mislintat, Thomas Tuchel etc. ) using advanced player data models and stats in recruitment and coaching etc. to great success both on and off the pitch to allow them to punch above their weight.

Do you know if Silva / Brands have a similar data based approach to help identify targets?
How sophisticated/ modern is our approach to recruitment, or are we behind the curve?

{Ed002's Note - I don't know TiH but about 18 months or so ago the conference rooms were being used by orgainsations who sell these sorts of software packages and clubs were represented by those responsible for doing the performance analysis of players. The sales pitches were pretty heavy.}

2.) 09 Jul 2019 14:24:32
Do you think we have missed out on the chance of a good player there Ed002? Sanson is not a name I have heard/ seen mentioned before. Thanks for your time!

{Ed002's Note - Most certainly.}

3.) 09 Jul 2019 18:07:17
Although only rumors, there has been mutterings of Delph over the past couple of Days here on Merseyside, for what it’s worth, my understanding is he will be an Alan Harper type utility player covering a few positions.

If Gaye pushes for a move then in my opinion we have an excellent player in Delph to bring in as a replacement, same age as Gaye and a very under rated player.

Like I say just rumours but very strong rumour.

4.) 09 Jul 2019 17:32:02
Hi Ed have we missed out because he is off somewhere else now or just cooled our interest.

{Ed002's Note - Not for either reason.}

5.) 09 Jul 2019 20:33:31
Sanson is quality. I'd be chuffed to bits if we managed to sign him.

6.) 09 Jul 2019 21:56:16
Thanks Ed so does that mean we still may be in for him? Or have we messed around on any potential deal by not pushing hard enough and torpedoed our chances?

{Ed002's Note - there has been nothing from Everton recently.}

7.) 09 Jul 2019 22:54:33
Delph is a wonderfull player but is injury prone sadly, when fit is a true international class player, would improve us greatly if fit.

Hi Ed - just wondering if you will have time to do a full update soon on what transfer business we are looking to do?

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - If you remind me on Thursday or Friday my travels will be over and I will do it then TiH. Thanks.}

26 Mar 2019 14:45:28
Hi Ed, hope everything is good. Is there any chance you could give us a little update on potential ins and outs regarding the summer if you get a chance? Starting to hear a few names being thrown around. Thanks a lot!

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - I would need access to my notes but it is something like this:
Alex Telles (LWB) - can't see any chance of a moved really, but he has been looked at
Velentine Lazaro (RM/RW/RB) looked at by Newcastle, Brighton, Bayer Leverkusen, Leicester and Everton but talks are on-going with Napoli who expect to strike a deal
Bruno Fernandes (AM) - I doubt it will come to anything
Malcom (RW) - something may well be possible
Edin Dzeko (S) an enquiry has been made

1.) 26 Mar 2019 23:03:31
Is lozaro the young hertha Berlin player Ed?

{Ed002's Note - Yes. And you can add RBL to the list of interetsed sides, but Napoli are certainly pushing.}

19 Dec 2017 11:23:52
Eds - two players we've been linked to in the past and wondering if we have shown any interest in January moves for them:

Kevin Gameiro - it seems clear we are looking for a striker and he hasn't had much game time this season.

Daley Blind - contract running out at the end of the season and would strengthen LB and LCB positions.

Any interest shown in either of these?

Thanks!

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Kevin Gameiro is seen by Valencia as an alternative to Sandro Ramrez. He is also seen as an option by Newcastle. If Everton are interested he would likely be third choice after Hirving Lozano and Richmond Boakye, but there is every chance he will move when Diego Costa arrives. Daley Blind was of interest to Koeman but the player had no interest in Everton so I would not expect anything to happen there.}

1.) 19 Dec 2017 11:48:38
Thanks Ed - much appreciated.

Interesting to hear about Lozano - have we shown an interest in him?

Also I thought he was playing as a winger for PSV - are we interested in him as a main striker?

{Ed002's Note - Yes, Everton have enquired after Lozano and he can play in pretty much anuy forward position.}

2.) 19 Dec 2017 16:13:26
Never heard of them before ed. Are they highly rated how old are they and would the consider a team like us at the minute?

{Ed002's Note - Lozano is young (22 or 23) and having a very good season. Arsenal are keen on him as well.

Boakye is about 25 and scoring at about a goal a game for Red Star. Marseille have spoken with his club and Newcastle have an interest although it is Rennes that have put an offer on the table. he has made clear his desire to play for Chelsea. Howevr, he has only really turned it on gol wise this season and there is always a risk in taking a raw talent and asking him to step up.}

3.) 19 Dec 2017 17:02:15
Agree ed on player who hasn’t had prem experience is a risk even more so with our lovely weather up north 🙈. But we are in need of striker who knows where the net is. So we will be taking risks. We took on on Sandro and it hasn’t worked out for whatever reason but at £5mil it was an easy risk for the club to take. I can se eus going for benteke if the price is £30mil and I hope we do not sign a number 10 as I want to see Dowell in thisnpositins next year.

19 Dec 2017 11:21:00
Ed - I've read some reports linking us to Stefan de Vrij from Lazio. His contract is coming to an end this summer and would be an excellent signing to shore up our defence.

Have we shown any interest in him?

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware. Liverpool enqure but discussions are in hand with Inter right now.}

1.) 19 Dec 2017 11:48:50
Thanks Ed!

Exciting season ahead!

Chelsea, utd and Spurs all with poor windows. Us, West Ham and Leicester all excellent windows. Plus Fulham and Wolves unknown quantities.

Don't think we will finish top.

Mina, Gomes (loan) and Zouma on loan would be a fantastic deadline day but would be happy with just Mina. Others joining would surely mean selling/ loaning others (Schneiderlin? Pennington? Besic? ) post-deadline day in UK.

Saying all that, the dream would probably be Mina + Deondecker. Apparently Wolves have agreed 18m fee for him - so he's not ludicrously expensive, plus can cover CM, CB and FB positions.

Will trust whoever Brands and Silva go for though!

Agree with degsy below - for me we should be focussing on thinning the squad and improving it with a few well placed signings.

So my opinion on where we need strengthening:
CB - Essential. I like Lascelles but I think we actually need to sign someone who can build a strong partnership. I would go for Ben Mee. Probably means Funes Mori and or Williams leaving.

LB - Don't think this is as big a weakness as first appears as I back Robinson to come into 1st team squad this season. Still wouldn't mind an extra body (especially if they can fill multiple positions) . Juan Bernat from Bayern is one that has interested in the past.

CM - to play alongside Gueye and play the ball forward. William Carvalho would fit this bill, or Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria. Would mean 2 of Besic, McCarthy and Schneiderlin moving on.

WG/ ST - some pace who can fill in on LW and ST positions. Marcus Rashford on loan would be a dream. Otherwise Justin Kluivert or Lozano. Trust Tosun to lead the line next season. Caveat to that is if Batshuayi becomes available!

Out for me:
Mori (one of few squad players who could fetch us some money)
Williams (past it)
Martina (never had it)
Schneiderlin (same reason as Mori)
McCarthy (could fetch some money, plus I think Besic offers us something different)
Mirallas (not needed and potential to cause trouble)
Niasse (hard worker, but not good enough and rumoured trouble maker)
Rooney (sad to see him go, but time to move on)

1.) 05 Jun 2018 13:15:52
Agree with most of that except McCarthy, I've seen more from him than I ever have from Besic. Both injury prone so if were keeping one it would be Mcarthy.
Batshuayi can't play as a lone nine so forget him.

04 Jun 2018 07:02:34
We need to stay well clear of Arnie. Disregarding the money, the guy is 29 and has had 1 good season in his entire career - and even that one he was injured for a large portion.

Players that age we should be looking for consistency who have done it year on year.

Perfect manager for me would be Ralph Hasenhuttl - who has just left RB Leipzig.

Would love a team built around young, exciting players like Leipzig have been. And we have the players already to do it - Pickford, Kenny, Robinson, Holgate, Connolly, Davies, Baningime, Vlasic, Dowell, Lookman, DCL.

Eds - are you aware of any interest in him from the club?

Toffee in Herts

{Ed001's Note - no mate sorry.}

1.) 21 May 2018 15:52:21
I mentioned him the other day but still think it will be Silva.

2.) 21 May 2018 18:17:44
Hassenhutti have to google him but great name.

Excellent signing for that price. Better than Jimmy MC, Morgan and Besic - so immediately improves our squad. Adds valuable experience as well.

All accounts are that he is an excellent dressing room presence as well - from both Guardiola and Southgate. Look at how good Miller has been for Liverpool, and how good Barry was for us.

Think he's a quality player - but isn't our problem too many no 10s / centre mids?

We need to sign players who fit the system and provide balance across the squad, not just for their quality - otherwise we will make the same mistakes as last summer.

Toffee in Herts

{Ed002's Note - Only one side has approached Chelsea about RLC and it is not Everton.}

Very British level of arrogance that we think 2nd tier in England is better to play in than top 6 in Germany!

I'm divided over this to be honest. I would love Lookman to stay and play a major role in the 1st team this season. But considering that isn't happening under Sam, then half a season on loan with one of the most exciting teams in Europe is surely the next best thing.

AWB will be £40m+. We should be investing that sort of money in other areas of the squad first - if at all. With the way Coleman has been playing he's still got another year left in him, and we have Kenny and Holgate behind him as well. If we look to replace him then it shouldn't break the bank (already have Gomes + Zouma + striker to sign)

Plus, very much doubt AWB will come to us. He will have a number of Champions League teams to pick from. And from his point of view - why would he leave his hometown club for Everton - not quite a sideways step but certainly not the jump up in stature or money he would probably want.

Toffee Ace - Agree. It's going to be a very interesting season next season. Liverpool and City will be challenging again, and if Spurs can keep hold of their stars then they will be up there too.

Utd will throw money at the problem - then it's up to Ole to make it click. Arsenal will improve under Emery as he builds his team and Chelsea have the transfer ban to deal with.

With any luck we can capitalise on a slip - but you would put us in a group alongside Leicester and Wolves as the teams to take advantage. Wolves look best placed right now if we're honest. And dare I say whoever doesn't finish 7th (and get Europa) this season may have the best chance next.

But we shouldn't kid ourselves how far away we are. Even with the great wins we are 15 points behind the top 6. I'm a fan of Silva and Brands and think we are heading in a positive direction, but let's focus on improving and continuing to build a young exciting team - if we do that then who knows what can happen.

Silva doesn't give youth a chance?

On average, we have the youngest starting XI in the premier league this season (alongside Southampton under Hasenhuttl and Fulham) .

I actually think Silva has got a very good blend of youth and experience in the squad.

Pickford is very young for a premier league GK (25) - only Kepa is younger (by 6 months! ) 1st choice in the league.

Zouma, Mina, Digne are all 25 or under. Keane has only just turned 26. Kenny is 22 and played 10 times this season. Again - very young average age for a defence (supplemented by experience of Jags, Baines and Seamus) .

Andre Gomes is 25. Davies is 20 and played 15 times this season already. Again supplemented by experience of Siggy and Gueye.

Richarlison is 21 (with 8 caps for Brazil) , DCL is 22 (just! ) . Bernard is only 26. Again supplemented by more experience of Theo and Cenk. And of course there is Lookman who should be getting more game time.

And of all of Brands/ Silva's signings, Bernard was the oldest at 25 (at the time he signed) .

While most of these aren't raw youngsters, most of them have their best years ahead of them in the next 5-6 years

And of course we have Dowell, Vlasic, Holgate, Williams, Onyekeru, Robinson and Baningime all out on loan getting invaluable experience.

You can accuse Silva of a lot of things - but not giving youth a chance is not one of them.

Could not agree more with your opening line. For some reason half of our fans seem more concerned with being anti-Liverpool than pro-Everton. Every time Everton is criticised they respond by attacking Liverpool (case in point the "stepping stone" debate below) , rather than accept / challenge the criticism of Everton.

Personally it doesn't bother me one bit what Liverpool do. If they play the best football and are the best team in the league this season and win it - well done them, but it doesn't affect Everton at all. The only thing that would bother me about that is my red mates not shutting up about it!
