Whatever happened to manager's working their way up to top jobs? . these days if your foreign or been a half decent footballer you get a crack at the big time.
Silva is a typical example of how we have had to move with the ever increasing demand for instant success. he has done nothing, he has won nothing yet we spent a fortune tapping him up and giving him a contract with millions on transfer fees and in all honesty he is No better than the previous 3 managers.
Wrong appointment and wrong approach.
He will not succeed and will be gone by middle of next season (with many millions) . we are forever going back to the drawing board and ironically find ourselves In the exact same situation as Man Utd who created this by tapping up Moyes.
I really don't know what the answer is but I can assure you it ain't what we have now.

I have been one of EFC's biggest critics in recent years Tricky. Post Moyes I thought we signed some quite dreadful players under both Martinez and Koeman. I was branded as a "negative" and depressed! I constantly commented about some very poor (in my opinion) signings and repeated many times that I thought both Lukaku and Barkley had saved both managers from the sack many times. We were particularly poor at signing quality forward/ midfielders. I could write a list of many of the average/ poor players that would fill a whole sheet. But I can see that we are now starting to sign some half decent players. I can also see some kids coming through. Our stats show that we are attacking much more and playing more football of quality. eg I think we had 16 attempts in one of our last games. Compare that with last season and when we went 4 games without registering a single shot on target. I agree with you that we were very poor as a club last 6 seasons. But if we can get the players fit who signed recently and have a run of a few games with the same players, then maybe sign another couple next window without losing any of our current lot. who knows what we can achieve? As for the manager, he is just part of a bigger picture and I guess all members of staff in football clubs are overpaid these days. But look at the positives mate. It is 10000's % better than the tripe served up at the beginning of last season. before we signed Tosun, Walcott, Richarlison, Bernard and a couple of defenders too.

6 games and you're writing Silva off. The football is 100% better all round than the last 6 seasons. I enjoy watching the games.

{Ed025's Note - me too mowfee mate..

It all depends on what you are expecting us to be achieving TrickyTrev?
After 7 games are you expecting us to be pushing top 4?
Steam rollering everyone when we are still building a style and the players are still learning how to play as a squad.

If you don't know what the answer is then at least give this manager a season to show us we are progressing before shooting him down.

I am enjoying the way we are playing most of the time, last season I couldn't even watch the games. I personally feel we are just 1 or 2 players away from really clicking as a team. We may already have those players (gomes, mccarthy, mina, bernard) or we might have to go and buy a couple more but we are infinitely better than we have been for the last 3 or 4 seasons.

Great post Tricky Trev, so many on here just cannot or do not want to see the truth sadly.

I'd much rather have Rose-Tinted glasses on than the Manure-Tinted ones Tricky Trev7 and the band of doom merchants appear to be wearing. Maybe it will transpire that you lot are right and Silva will be an abject failure and do nothing but drag our beloved club down, who knows? From what I have seen so far I doubt it personally. When the guy has only been here five minutes you have to at least give him a chance surely? You never know, he may surprise you.

The problem is there is no cast iron guaranteed way to pick a successful manager. Guardiola had only managed Barcelona's second stream before he took over there, Ranieri hadn't won anything until Leicester, ex international players are a mixed bag Wilkins, Strachan etc offset by Hoddle, Deschamps and dare I say it, a certain Mr Kendall. Lesser known players very mixed results, a lot of them one season wonders who slide downhill just as quickly.

The answer - I haven't a clue and don't envy the chairmen / boards who have to decide. I do know that whoever they decide on we have to get behind them. I know I am saying this a bit tongue in cheek because of my lack of support of Allardyce but when he joined I tried to understand the need and certainly hoped he would be good for us. Unfortunately he, very quickly, drained my love of football and served up some of the worse football I have seen from us, and I'm in my sixties

So, I might indeed be being 2 faced when I complain about the Silva detractors but I would say the football is miles better, the strengthening of the squad by him and Brandt is 'encouraging' and I have my love of football back and that's after only 6 league games. It might not work out, nothings certain in this world, but we are so much better than last year. Give him a chance. I still think we will be 8th or above with real enthusiasm/ hopes for next season

Enjoy the ride with me and the other rose tints or stay depressed It's your choice.

A win tomorrow and Silva will be the best manager we could have got. A loss and the Big Sam lovers will be wanting him out. How many times will we have to change a manager until all are happy? Just go with the flow and see where we are at xmas.
