Some people who run football clubs are genuine fans, but don't have the wealth to finance progress.
Others may have the wealth, but aren't fans and are only in it to make money.
Apart from Steve Gibson (Middlesbrough) - and perhaps the Coates family (Stoke City) - who else has the wealth AND is a genuine fan of their club?

Usmanov, Ashley, Kenwright and Moshiri are genuine fans of the clubs they are invested in.

Kenwright is.

Smit666: Kenwright is a fan, but is not wealthy enough. The other three are wealthy enough, but I doubt that Ashley supported NUFC and I doubt that Moshiri supported EFC before they became owners.

I’m not making any particular point - I’d just like to see how many clubs have wealthy fans as owners - which probably means they have the best interests of the club at heart and the wherewithal to realise it.

Mike Ashley is a Chelsea fan. Genuine.

It's a much more common trend in lower league clubs. My cousin bought his local club a fair few years back and said it's his biggest regret, it's just a money pit. It perhaps suggests that not supporting the club you buy is the best approach because if you support them you will likely end up throwing in everything you have causing financial ruin, instead of attempting to run it as a business.

If fans were told they could run their club, but would have to fund it by mortgaging their homes, or giving up their life savings, or have money taken out of their wages, how many - even the diehard fans - would do that (even if they could afford to do it) ?
Fans are great at expecting other people to finance their club. Buying a season ticket and the replica kit is as far as most fans can go. Running a football club is a money-fit in almost every case - and fans don’t like owners to take money out.
