Although we should aspire (even try) to sign the best players, do you agree that we really need to be in the Champions League in order to attract those players to Everton?

Its not about agreeing. It's been a fact for over 20 years.

The very best will only play in CL.
Wages can help sway but some players stay in their domestic leagues because they are guaranteed CL. All the Greek and Turk teams. The Scots and most of the Scandinavians.

A 3rd place or above I'd the spot to get. That is a sure fire way to sign a top top player. Nice and early in the window. 4th (as we know from back in the day) for a team like us isn't enough to attract anyone. Especially (as we did) you get beat in the qualifier. Makes it all pointless.

money wins over champs league for some players so it depends on the individual really.

only thing about that is some 'big' players that are swayed by the cash and not the competitiveness sometimes come and just take their pay packet and go home.

Just take a look at the players who have gone to China, it's certainly not for the standard of football they are going to play, offer big money and you have a good chance, but if you only offer the same or not a lot more money than the team in champions league then obviously they will go to them.

yeah but as my point above look at how they've performed in china.

4th place goes straight into group stages from this year.

ToffeeAL: I believe there is a scenario (which didn’t happen this year) where English clubs win the UCL and the UEL - but they finish outside the PL top-four.
They get 2 of England’s UCL places, while the top-3 in the PL get the other places. England only get a maximum of 5 UCL places. The PL team in 4th goes into the UEL.

My reply was with the understanding that no English clubs would win the two European competitions, if Liverpool lose the final then all four places go to the four best placed teams in the league standings and they all go straight to the group stages.
