What does anyone make of the Martina signing? I understand the requirement for depth in the squad and you'd have to assume Koeman knows what he's getting, but I'd like to have seen Kenny getting game time until Seamus is back fit. And Holgate is a decent back up right back too.
Saints fans are more than happy to see him go.

Just another body in the squad to cover injuries and suspensions, etc with a lot more games this season.

Just because he was free doesn't mean he can't do a job for us. If he had cost 10m would it make him any better or worse?

No offence meant Tadpoleblue, its just that some people assume because a player is released by one club he can't possibly be good enough for theirs. It happens with all fans of all clubs. He has obviously been broght in on a 3 year deal because RK knows him and not just as a stopgap until Seamus recovers.

I think Martina is a good addition, especially as he was a free transfer. I don't believe it will impact on Kenny or Holgate, it's great for a player to have competition to prove he is worth the place in the team, and if Kenny gets in ahead of Martina then we know he is doing well in training. Also, it's nice to have that safety net for Kenny, what happens if he gets put in the team and the pressure gets to him, it could hamper his development and knowing that Martina is there to also do the job means Koeman doesn't have to persist with a player who is not quite ready yet, i think of Pilkington here in that he was highly rated but was just awful when given the chance, i don't think it was his fault, he just wasn't quite ready yet, but it's evidence that slow integration to the first team is often necessary.

Kenny is very young and can't be expected to be ready for a champions league chasing side. A few league cup games and eased into the pressure of the premier league over the next two years.

This Cuco will do a job covering Baines and Coleman and is quite versatile.
