I'm a bit disappointed with Ed002's comments below. When discussing potential Lukaku transfer fees Ed002 complained of a lack of understanding of how the process works. Then a poster asked Ed002 if he would explain the process. Ed002 refused, which is disappointing.

Having an Ed like Ed002 is very helpful when it comes to gaining an insight into the back office of transfer dealings and scouting networks. But it comes with a clear trade off, which is an aloofness about knowledge which I find condescending.

If a poster asks how it works on the back of Ed002s complaint that there is a lack of understanding then explain how it does work.

If that is refused then Ed002 is no longer in a position to complain about our ignorance because a desire for understanding has been refused.

The way I see it is this:

There are those who refuse to share knowledge and understanding whilst looking down from their Ivory towers, and those who share their knowledge and understanding whilst looking across from their carved out bunkers.

Whether you're a fan or a supporter, surely knowledge shared is of more use than knowledge hidden.

{Ed002's Note - I have axplained that it is not worth agreeing anything at all to do with the finances nor the mechanisms of the business - particularly to a fanbase that wants the club to follow whatever Watford do - it is quite frankly embarrassing reading.}

{Ed033's Note - This site is for people to talk about Everton FC. This site is not here to moan about Ed002 or to talk about Ed002.
Any additional info/insight you're lucky enough to get from Ed002 is just to be seen as a huge bonus or you can ignore anything Ed002 says.

Haha. All eds stick together.

{Ed002's Note - I would be more than happy to share information about the game, the transfer process and other matters if there was genuine interest and there could be sensible discussion - but what we have consistently on this page is people like who go off and change your name to make a comment. It simply embarrasses the Everton fans further.}

Ed002 don't let the minority ruin it for the majority. As far as behind the scenes business is concerned I don't bother withe that personally the same as setting prices for players again that's between the bidding club and the players current club to negotiate. All I'm interested in is the knowledge of what players we have a genuine interest in from a genuine itk this is a forum not a school playground the Eds are here to answer genuine questions when neended not to make friends. So hopefully Ed002 keeps being informative and witty with the responses to stupid requests and doesn't decide enough is enough and stop editing our page.

{Ed002's Note - Later today or this evening I will look at trying to share some things about teh mechanics of the business - and we will see how that goes.}

ed002, what's your view on how the valuation of a player is made. I would have thought it would be down to contributing factors such as supply and demand current wage structure and perceived value to contracted club. With length of contract players wishes financial state of current employer having additional weight to the valuation. The reason I ask is that we significantly differ with valuations of players from what I have seen on this site. That being the case I am wondering if there is something I am missing if so what. I do realise that there will always be a difference of opinion over values as different people look at different thing within players for their valuation. So I am not that bothered the valuations themselves but just want to understand the processes involved.

{Ed002's Note - There are four potential options and I will try and give examples: (1) The club and player want to part company. An easy one - if another club comes along with an offer that is acceptable to the club and terms that are accptable to the player, then there is little to stop the transfer happening as long as rules and regulations are met. An easy example of this is Granit Xhaka who wanted his move to Arsenal and they met the financial expectations of Borussia Monchengladbach. (2) The player wishes to leave whilst the club are happy to hang on to him - but then an over zealous agent will force the move. An example. The agent of Olympiakos' Omar Elabdellaoui is has been offering the player to English sides due to his home grown status - or perhaps he is attracted by English money. No takers at this time and Olymipiacos are happy to keep him but several English clubs have looked at him in addition to Stuttgart, RB Salzburg and Monaco. They may have to simply accept selling the player at the right price as opposed to having a disgruntled player on the books. (3) The player wishes to stay but the club decides to sell. A great example here from a few years ago is a Bordeaux player who was subject to an illegal approach who used the tactic of the commited C hristian being able to pray with the manager once the move had taken place as Jesus was in both of their lives. No offer from the club was forthcoming but the club decided to sell him as his head had been turned. As an aside the player remains in the football wilderness. (4) Both the club and player are happy to continue the relationship but a predatory club chases down the transfer. A recent example is Pjanic who knew the player was happy and knew that Roma did not want to sell, but the raised the stakes to a level where Roma had to say to the player they don't want to sell but they have an offer they will accept. The package for the player was too good to turn down so the move happened.

In terms of teh transfer process, Clubs will typically informally ask an agent (a) if the player is going to be available, and (b) would the player consider a move to the club. There may be some broad discussion on the sort of deal that would be offered. If the answer is yes, it is then necessary for the club to approach the player's club to ask if they would be willing to sell and if they would grant permission to speak to a player's agent and possibly even the player about actually making a move. This will typically involve either broadly (through an offer) or actually agreeing a fee and responsibility for any significant costs (agents fees etc.). Once this has happened the club will be able to speak to the player's agent and perhaps the player himself to look at the package that will be involved. Many players are looked at and discussed at a high-level with agents and clubs; a subset of those have an offer placed; a subset of those involve discussions with the player's club; a subset of those involve discussions over terms, and; a subset of those go ahead.}}
