Just had a quick look at the prizemoney for the Europa league this year - nothing to be sniffed at in my honest opinion as if you can get through the group stages and progress there are millions to be had - nothing compared to champions league but still a nice little pot of money to be had plus the possiability of winning a trophy and hopefully attract some better players to the club.

Is there an update on what would need to happen for 7th place in the PL getting a Europa League slot? Would it be a play in game during the middle of preseason like before?

Not sure what you mean new blue?
If city win the FA cup, 7th gets a Europa league place and that would be 2 qualifiers (I think) before the group games.

I think we need to finish 7th and need City to win the cup but would need the Ed’s to clarify.

{Ed002's Note - No. Runners up no longer qualify for Europa. Finishing 7th will do.}

City must win FA Cup or else Watford and the top 6 get European slots. If we finish 7th and City win, we would get into the second qualifying round of Europa League. From there, we'd need to win 3 2-legged matches to make it to the group stage.

Happy to finish 8th as not sure we have the squad to deal with Europe, look what happened last time.
Even if we have a good tranfare window we will still be a bit light I think.

Well that reply just baffles me DC.
You have put so much emphasis on Silva doing better than Allardyce did last season. Are you Ok with him equalling his 8th and no better?
You also lambasted Silva because he doesn't blood the youth but a Europa league campaign would no doubt require some of our younger players to play.

I cannot believe anyone would rather us finish 8th than 7th. What it brings is far more rewarding for our club.
More money, attracting better players, more games for us fans to watch. It's the natural progression in the league.
Unless we are you going to finish in the top 4 next year then I'd rather us be in Europe and I would hope every other fan thinks the same.

So what happens if city win the FA cup and the premier league
Spurs finish third and win the champions league
And say Arsenal finish fourth and win the europa league
Would that mean more European spots?

Wow, that's a terrible way to look at things. We need to aspire to play and win in Europe every season, not look at past failures and assume they will repeat. And, it's not like we got relegated last time; we finished mid-table, just like all the other recent years. This team and fanbase need to dream bigger. We have the pocketbooks to compete and hopefully have some guys in place now to properly yield that. If you don't want to win in Europe, what do you want? 8th place every year? That's incredible.

SA. The way i understand it, and one of the Eds may be able to correct me if I've got it wrong.
We have our full quota of Champs league places (4) if Spurs win it, we still only get our quota (4) . The winner always gets a place so if Spurs weren't in the top 4 they would take the place of the 4th placed team.
4th would then get a europa slot.
Europa is the same (2) plus (1) for winning the FA CUP. If a team wins the FA CUP that already has a place then the plus (1) goes to the 7th best team.

i think that is correct, although it hasn't always been that way i don't think.

{Ed001's Note - the maximum is 5, if the winner of the CL finishes outside of the top 4.}

so what would happen if arsenal or chelsea win europa as well.

11.) 24 Apr 2019

I heard it could be 5, lot of ifs and buts though.

12.) 24 Apr 2019

Smitt is correct. If the winner finishes outside the top 4 the 4th place team will go into europa league. This rule was made when Everton came fourth and Liverpool were given a place despite finishing behind Everton. Then the laws were changed to ensure no repeat.

But a fifth spot can be gained only if a team outside the top 4 wins the europa league therefore winning a place in the champions league.

To add on to what others have already said, in no scenario do more than 7 get into Europe. In the case that 5 go to UCL, only 2 would get into Europa.

The strangest scenario is if (i) Spurs win CL but finish outside the top 4 in the league, and (ii) Chelsea or Arsenal win Europa but finish outside the top 4 in the league. In this case, since a max of 5 can go to the UCL, the top 3 plus Spurs and Europa winners would get into UCL next year, and the 4th place team would go to Europa along with either Watford or the 7th place team.

What I said had nothing to do with Silva, some our obsessed with my opinion of the man, I was making a comment about playing in Europe next season that was all.
Also comparing him to Allerdyce over a season is sill as Sam was not here a season and this I also did not say.
Please read what I say and comment on that but do not decide what you think I think I comment on that.
As you lot seem to mention Silva I am not totally happy with him as you know but should be allowed another season as not good changing manager all the time. Saying this does mean I like the guy or am happy with him, most do agree with me I know.

15.) 25 Apr 2019
25 Apr 2019 19:45:28
My comments DC were merely pointing out that earlier in the season you commented that Silva had to better Allardyces 8th place considering the money spent. You also said the other day that Silva had a black mark against him for not playing youngsters.
I would think that us getting into Europe would aid Silva in being able to play more youngsters.

Aside from that, it does baffle me that you wouldn't want your team playing in a top European competition. One that will bring so much to the club.
It just comes across as too negative for me.
If that's how you feel than that's fine i just don't see the logic of it.

16.) 25 Apr 2019
25 Apr 2019 22:39:57
I stand by all those comments but thinking on Sam was not here a season, and we are in 9th today I believe, a lot can happen in three games.
I can understand why you feel that Europe is a good thing but I do not agree with you at this time.
My comments about young players is 100% valid I feel, ok so not allways a positive spin on things but just a realistic view as I see things.
I hope this time next year I will be wanting Silva to get a longer contract and you can say I told you so but I will not be holding my breath.

17.) 26 Apr 2019
26 Apr 2019 06:55:01
I will never say I told you so DC because I have always said I would make my mind up about Silva at the end of the season. I am already sold though, I am loyal to everything Everton and Silva comes in that bracket.
All I hope for is that you have a brighter outlook about Everton sooner than later.

I agree with you smit, I don't understand how anyone cannot. Cementing our spot as best of the rest, playing in europe when the FA cup winner allows us and good cup runs/ wins is our best realistic target for the next couple of seasons.

Then push for the top 6 to turn into the top 7 unless another team fades away but I don't see that happening.
