I believe the Everton manager has quite an imput in choosing signings. More than Ed002 understands. (sorry Ed002 I am not trying to be confrontational) . As soon as Martinez arrived we signed: McCarthy, Robles, Kone and Alcaraz all from Wigan. I cannot believe that we had scouted these players previously. and if we had, the scouts needed firing in a firing squad. Added to this, I remember Moyes being quoted as saying that he personally vetted every signing at the club. He checked out their personalities as much as their ability in order to make sure they were decent men and would fit into the Everton way. Players like Tim Howard, Leighton Baines, Jags, Coleman, Distin, Neville etc are players that spring to mind. The list goes on. I do not see that Moyes would have signed Niasse from the trouble he has allegedly caused in such a short space of time. but perhaps that is too soon to judge? Either way, I believe the Everton manager has the final say on signings.

{Ed002's Note - Did I say he didn't have an input in signings? I understand the situation perfectly. What I suspect you don't understand is the influence of Reeeves in all of this.}

Think you've misunderstood, Degsy.

You both have to be correct. It obviously depends on the individual manager. The scouting team under the head scout has the responsibility to watch players and report back to the club, the manager obviously reads the reports. I seem to remember Moyes going out to watch players so sometimes managers will only sign a player if they have seen them in person and sometimes the manager has to rely on video evidence. Once a decision has been made to sign or attempt to sign a player the signing on team in our case presumably Reeves and Harrison do all of the negotiating etc. It would appear that in the case of Martinez that Reeves was trusted to do more of the scouting and decision making than maybe Moyes would have allowed. If that is the case I hope that we don't end up with more Niasse's in this period when we don't have a manager.

I love how the benchmark for poor signings is Niasse.

Well Hugo let's look at the facts. We paid three times more for him than he was worth a year ago. He played well in an inferior league but has not proved he is capable of playing in a good league. He has played very little for us since he arrived. He had wrist problems. He needed time to get fit. He is in trouble with the law. When he played he was rubbish. Have I missed anything out? I do hope that he proves me wrong but the facts so far indicate we made a big mistake in signing him.

I have to agree with degsy I understand what your trying to say EDS but the managed must have the final say like degsy said you only have to look at the sighning of the players over the years they match the manager in charge in every club.

{Ed002's Note - I have explained how the transfer system works at Everton and it is similar at otehr clubs. Feel free to ignore what I am saying.}

If that is the case Ed002 then in my opinion you are both right but the fact that Reeves had influence in Kone and Alcaraz being signed makes me wonder why he is still at the Club. Actually I don't wonder because any new Manager will want to bring in his own Team.

{Ed002's Note - Managers do not have their own teams of scouts. Whilst Reeves arrived from Wigan you can look at any other club and see that is not the case. Do you think Klipperty came with his own scouts? Conte will arrive but not with a bus load of scouts.}

Ed002 has Kevin Reeves not left along with Martinez? I remember reading that he left also.

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware that he has.}

Reeves was relieved of duties before the Norwich game, returned on Monday to clear his locker out.

{Ed002's Note - They will be recruiting someone new then.}

Ed002 hasn't said what some are implying here. What I did see him saying is that managers inputs into transfers vary from club to club. Everton seem to be one of the clubs who have a more traditional approach still going on.

Like the manager having a good say on who to sign. That may change for our next manager. Who knows? Me I prefer the good old system of the manager picking players that he thinks fits into his plans. Seems to complicate things to have a director of football or whatever taking care of signings.
