I can't believe the Henen deal fiasco. The player supposedly really wants to sign for us, the price said to be £3 million. Everton haggle on and on because he is "one for the future" and, presumably, think that £3 million represents too much money to take a punt on a player who may or may not be good enough to play for us. We then sign Eto'o on loan, whose wages in a few months MUST be equal to (or let's be honest, quite possibly, more than) the difference between what Everton were prepared to pay for Henen and the £3 million price tag. Result: highly promising young player signs for another club AND THEN Everton set about trying to loan him from them, PRESUMABLY FOR A FEE (!?!?!?). To cap it all off, the Echo is saying that Martinez was backing the proposed loan move so that Henen could " continue his development on Merseyside. and Martinez was happy to proceed in the hope that the forward could develop into a potential option for the first team after Christmas". WHAT? So we passed up on a hot prospect striker who could have been in the first team by Christmas. Why? Are we now so skint that we could not afford to bridge the gap between our estimated valuation of the player and Anderlecht's £3 million valuation? If so, I find this a bit disturbing as the sums we are talking about in terms of the Henen deal are not huge in terms of modern football (and we had sold Duffy for somewhere thought to be just over a million just before the transfer deadline). I can only conclude that, either, our finances are stretched to an almost precarious degree or that it was just good, old-fashioned "cock-up a l'Everton". Again.

{Ed025's Note - we dont know the full story cagey, maybe after his trial he was not as good as first thought?, eto was ready to be a first teamer so thats the big difference between the two mate, we have to trust bobby on this one, im sure if he really wanted him the dosh was not a problem..

1.) I agree cagey. You would have thought that after weeks of haggling this deal for Henen would have gone through last night. Instead he ends up at Olympiakos of all places and we're talking about trying to loan him back for this season? This deal should (and let's face it COULD) have been concluded weeks ago. And what was all this nonsense about trying to sign Tom Cleverly last night when with the departure of Duffy, there was a clear place available for a decent CB. Toby Atterweirald? who the ends up at Southampton on loan. Strange goings on but hey, at least no one was poached at the 11th hour from our squad.

we all know about the undoubted talent of ross barkley and the posts here show clearly the concern about the effect his injury might have on the start to the season for us. this got me wondering-and there is no hidden agenda here- what people thought about the idea of building a team around barkley and his (current) great ability and immense potential for the future; foolish not to do it or too risky a strategy?

If we were going to get Wellbeck, I assume as a striker because he does not want to play anywhere else, then why did we sign Eto'o? According to Grauniad, United won't let him go to a "top 6 club", although they did not say whether this meant top 6 last season or this, so we may still have a chance.

Don't know the ins and outs of our finances, but there can't be much left after 40ish million quids worth of signings, plus improved deals for younger players, plus Eto'o's wheelbarrow full, but I fear it's all academic anyway- supposedly, he's signing for Arsenal.

Er… Ronaldo of Brasil is a former Barcelona striker who has won plenty of trophies and I, personally, would not give him a two year deal at this moment in time… If memory serves me correct, Ronaldo was always happy to get on a plane to the World Cup and not be involved in a player revolt over wages, which led to a German coach having to receive his national flag on the tarmac in Cameroon? According to the BBC website, his national coach declared, when dropping him, “We also have to change the spirit of the team, we have to change the mentality of the players." Just the sort of bloke we need, then…

Eto’o at Finch Farm. Hoping that this is a nightmare that I will wake up from shortly. A two year deal for a “33year old former international”-wwwhhhaaattt? I will be honest from the start, I cannot believe we are in for Eto’o unless it is on a “pay as you play” deal, which it clearly won’t be given his shop steward role at the World Cup. The Echo has an interesting take on it this morning, saying that “Eto’o closes in on Everton FC move”. Surely that would normally be the other way around? It sounds to me like, “someone is taking someone for a walk”. God knows what the weekly wage will be-I don’t know if we would ever find out- but it seems to me that if you added it up over two years, it would cover a small fee and wage deal for one, if not two, reasonably priced young prospects (as well as solving the issues in the Henen deal who, even though he is ear-marked for the U-21 squad, would still make more sense to me than Eto’o). And before I am told to keep quiet and trust the manager, may I take this opportunity to say that this is a forum site and I am entitled to voice my opinion. Ah… I feel much better now!
