Bargain of the year if we got him for that, just can't see it especially in todays market.

A good signing if it happens. We need some leaders on the pitch and Williams is one.

Williams would be a decent buy. I'd put him in a similar category to Distin when he was signed. Distin done very well for us and was underrated when we signed him.

IMHO Williams is similar. If we sign him I just hope he turns out as good as Distin did. IMHO Distin didn't even get enough credit for how he done at Everton. Was solid and a true professional. £10m would be a good buy for Williams. Still has plenty of years left for a centre half and will eventually take the senior role from Jags if signed.

Just because he's not a big name branded about in the papers doesn't mean he can't do a job for us. Probably do as good a job a some centre half's who would cost £25m.

Agree about Distin but still can't forget that pass back at Wembley.

This is the type of player that's needed for our shaky defence, good sighing if it happens, with the lad from villa things are looking good, like to see another quality striker or 2 if lukaku leaves, and maybe a ball player for midfield,

So who thinks Stones and Jags as a pair would concede more goals than Jags and Williams?

No brainier at £10m in my opinion!

Wakka hit the nail on the head we need the leadership qualities Williams would bring, we're currently a team with very little passion or leadership.

Hi Ed what do you think of Chelsea's offer for Lukaku any truth were holding out for 75 mill.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Bayern Munich have watched Everton's Romelu Lukaku on several occasions this past season and Real Madrid see him as a possible replacement for Benzema - if they are able to sell him and cannot get their first pick. Manchester United has shown no interest nor declared any interest in Lukaku at this time. If the club are to look to a centre forward at some point he may well be one option the club look to in the future - but for now, nothing. PSG have had scouts watch Lukaku on more than one occasion and with Ibrahimovic leaving and Cavani very probably leaving as well they had been working with some "agents" to bring in a couple of very high end players - and Lukaku is an option for them - but with the change of head coach chances of a move to Paris are now unlikely. There is a significant dependency as to whether they will follow this up. There was also a dialog open with Juventus regarding Lukaku and they could have potentially been considered a player in this matter at this time. Tentative Dortmund interest was dependent on (a) Aubameyang leaving, which is looking less likely, and (b) the cost being affordable for them, which I doubt it will be. So for now, not a player in this saga. As for Chelsea, there are no loopholes or secret clauses in his contract that Chelsea can use to buy him cheaply nor are there any "buy back" or other clauses that benefit them in any way. There is still support for him from both his orginal player liaison chap who fought hard, albeit unsuccessfully, for months for Chelsea to give him a second chance after the original incident and from an ex-player who Lukaku has spoken to. The two people at the club who were particularly offended have agreed to sanction an offer although one remains concerned. Whilst not first choice for Chelsea and whilst they will not pay the price being asked, the player wants to return and Everton know that. So it is possible. Napoli remain keen but not at the asking price.}

Ed, do you perhaps know if Everton are looking at any player (s) specifically (either as a replacement for Lukaku or to provide support/ competition) ?

{Ed002's Note - Everton will be looking for another striker, and has certainly been showing an interest in Rolan. I suspect it become clearer over the next couple of weeks.}

Sometimes there is a time to be serious and sometimes there is a time to lighten up, Sid. JCL I assumed we were playing nicely, taken in good spirit by Sid, giving as good as he got. I too believe that Ed (s) do have a fountain of knowledge in particular the young Mr Ed002.

We will not get £75 million for Lukaku but great awareness Everton setting that price, had we said £50 million, clubs would be offering £40 million for him.

If true Chelsea have offered £60 million, then they will return with an increased bid, its like having 16 at pontoon and chancing twisting, I would snap Chelseas hands off for anything over £60 million, no doubting his goal scoring, but his work rate and antisipation of making a run needs a lot of working on.

Two class strikers could be snapped up for that money and probs a goalkeeper as well.

Hi eds

Just read that the gueye transfer is being held up due to villa trying to get more money.
Now I thought a release clause was just that. an amount of money set so a plausers is able to transfer and the selling club get fair recompense.

Can villa do this?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I have explained on many occasions that you should ignore any talk of "clauses".}

30 Jul 2016 12:12:57
It's surprising how many fans believe that transfer deals are simple matters.
The idea that it's like the old days - "sign here, son, and be thankful for what we've offered" - are long gone. The financial (wages, bonuses, fee payment schedule) , contractual/ legal (like permits for non-EU players) , image rights, third-party ownership, etc., etc., issues take time to resolve. Even those deals that appear settled in short order have surely been worked on in "secret" for a long time before everything is signed, sealed and delivered. Or am I mistaken and it's not complicated to transfer a player?

Agree0 Disagree1

30 Jul 2016 16:10:25
Why should it be a surprise Sid. The idea of a release clause is very simple. Granted there are deatails we won't be privy to but in the absence of that info the OP rases a reasonable question.

From what insight that has been said before by Ed is that 'termination fees' are more common than release fees and are only applicable in the country it was signed, so in reality if a French team offer £15m then Villa make double than if they sell to an English side. Am I right in thinking this Ed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

Seems city will not meet the asking price for Stones, however, someone from the other side of manchester, has been alerted by these developments, and is said to be very keen, stright cash, or with a player, I don't know.

Straight swap . Stones for mata/ herrera and schneiderlein.

Id also buy fosu mensah and perreira as well and there's a rb and a spare creative mid covered.

Don't want mata myself. Would prefer us to go for geuye than sneiderlin. Wouldn't mind herrera though. (Auto correct had that looking dodgy then haha. would take mensa as well, but what about Holgate? How highly do you rate him ed?

The media stirring it up again as well, while accepting that the majority of them are serious Journalists, there is a minority (mainly from the papers that only need an Enid Blyton reading ability) that are totally irresponsible in their reporting and muck stirring. 'City give ultimatum to Everton' being the latest stupidity.

If we did do a straight swap for three utd players for Stones, how would they work out the valuation for Barnsleys 15%, utd could value one at £30 million, the others at say £20 million, that would then put the price at £70 million, how is it worked out if Everton just did a striaght swap with three players, instead of cash, am I guessing as I stated above, the valuation of the three players above. would be the price, what's to stop clubs putting a very low valuation say 10 million each player, so we only have to give 15% of £30 million.
