Rumours of Joe Bryan and Luke Shaw as summer targets for depth at left back
I hear Luke Shaw is out of contract but there is a year option whether he is likely to come to Everton or not could one of the Ed’s enlighten me, do these options mean that the club can simply extend for another year and in doing so would be able to get some fee of can the player refuse the option so he is a free agent? 🤔.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it depends on the contract. I believe in Shaw's case it is the club's option to decide whether to extend or not. Some are automatically extended when a player hits some kind of target such as appearances or goals. If I remember correctly Shaw's is simply a club option to add on a year. Depends on how badly they want rid I guess.}

Thanks Ed just had me intrigued.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate. Usually they come down to finances - is his value to sell worth more or less than getting his wages off the books? Having to take into accounts agents fees, the players 5% of the fee (unless he puts in a transfer request) and all the other payments sometimes it is worth just letting them go.}

So things like the agent fee and the players 5% does that come out of the fee or is that then on top of the fee?
So when a manager is told they have fund from any player sales if they lose £20m of talent what they get in is actually quite a bit less to use on new players.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - the 5% comes directly from the fee received. Plus there is another 5% due to clubs that have developed the player as a youngster. So you sell a player for £20m and the maximum the club can receive is £18m, before any taxes, agent fees, solicitors fees etc. Sometimes a club will also have to factor in paying some of the sold players salary to get them to go, such as when Leeds paid a significant portion of Robbie Fowler's wages for years after they sold him. Which is why, in the end, it can be easier to just release them on a free, especially when you look at some of the agent fees currently being charged. They can amount in the millions on their own very easily.}
