Listening to the reaction to Andy Townsend's comments about the Cole/Baines choice and having heard other so-called experts (mostly out of work managers or former players - in the main has-beens and never-wassers IMHO) on TV and the radio, I've come to my personal conclusion that the best one is Jimmy Armfield on tv Radio Five. He was a one-club man during a long playing career, played for (and captained) England, and had reasonable success as a manager - as well as carrying himself in an exemplary manner, as I understand it, both on and off the field. He always seems to hit the nail on the head with his analysis and is scrupulously unbiased in his opinions. Maybe I'm too fuddy-duddy, but I'd rather listen to him than some of the 'persons' on other footie channels.

Do you plan to enlighten us as to what Mr Armfield's opinion was?

We should be happy that Baines is not first pick for England less chance of him getting injured the same with Jags too

Townsend is simply expressing his ex Chelsea bias and generally the 'pundits' (if you can call them that), always tend to back the London based players, as do the FA. That's why I tend to follow England at arms length, because they are just a London based, FA led, corporate machine. (Wavertree Blue)

Ed and Blues, they were saying on TS that Roy should try Cole LB and Baines LM, I know Baines is the best LB in the world but I think he would be amazing in LM too.

Personally I think he might struggle in midfield. He is so effective because he comes from deep to join the play

That suggestion on a web site shows why they're not working as coaches or managers, but rather being pundits, because they couldn't hack it in the real world of football. Even I, as an Evertonian who thinks he's a superb player, couldn't support Baines being in England's team as a midfielder ahead of those other players who regularly play in midfield for their clubs in the Premier League, Champions League, etc. Playing Baines instead of Cole at left back for England is the core issue. Now if Pienaar was English instead of South African, would the Baines/Pienaar combination be England's first choice pairing on the left?

I wasnt saying Cole should be before Baines as I rate Bainesee ahead of Cole, we have no chance at present because Cole is their favourite.

I was saying that I would rather have Bainesee in front of Cole as a LM than on the bench or waiting for three years before Cole retires from England.

We cannot do anything about biased blinkered commentators who cannot see that Bainesee is probably in the top 3 left backs in the world.

We (being England) should just be thankful we have two world class left backs. Obviously i'm biased towards Bainsy, and I genuinely believe he is the best around as I see him week in week out. But I take nothing away from Cole. He has been class for over a decade, no question. As for both playing, I've always thought that. But not sure it would work for reasoning already mentioned, both like to run from deep. Put men right in front of them and there isn't the natural trickery of a winger there to skin them.
