I think from what i saw today, we will be ok if only we can sort out the wide areas. Inside i thought we played ok, Barkley and especilly Idrissa played some quick incisive football, but it all went wide and that's where it ended. Coleman looks so out of sorts, really not him, poor defensively and offensively. How much that is down to having Gerry in front of him i'm not sure, Gerry is awful, can't control the ball today, couldn't pass and all his crossing comes when he waits for the defender to come as close as possible then tries to cross through him? His covering and tackling were non descript, but we expect that. So that's a partnership that doesn't work by a long way. Likewise Baines and Mirallas, mmmm Baines not the offensive wing back he used to be and Mirallass is too many touches, it either stops the flow of the play or he loses it or has cut in that many times can't get his shot away. He covers quite well though. Really if were honest that partnership doesn't work either. This i feel as much as Lukaku's disinterest is where Everton need to look at more than anywhere as its the place everything breaks down constantly and so laboured at times the opposing defence is well se by the time a cross or pass is delivered.

I seen the game today yer we done we'll but it's like my very old school report could have done better. We need some better players I hope this openers it up is Barkley as good as what we think he is or does he stand out in a average team like ours as much as I love the club.

Don't worry blues it's preseason it's about fitness and practicing formations having a look at players getting the rust out of the players yes we could do with a couple of new signings but mark my word you will see a different Everton performance next Saturday we will be flying COYB.

You only see the negatives OX try look at the positives as well mate, it takes time to change,3 years under Martinez he has to put his own stamp on this team and make his own changes we will do well this season but it is next year when we will really push on cheer up mate we are Evertonians and it is never easy being a blue.

Couldn't agree more Efc, how long does this theory of let's wait and see who we bring in before the start of the season as we are leaving it pretty late. We haven't got a goal in us at the moment and haven't put a decent pre season performance in so I'm dreading spurs.

I think there will be a few signings this week. you can bet ronny and walsh were busy last week and I'd be suprised if there's no signings this week.

06 Aug 2016 21:20:11
Efcfanatic I hope your right. We've said this every weekend and still no creative players. You can all go on about being positive but I think it's called being realistic. The season starts Saturday we've made 1 out field signing! Yet again leaving everything till last minute. We need a good start to the season. Would it not of been better to get players in to gel? Call me negative but I think it's a joke the position we are in yet again!

Quick summary of our last pre-season game again.

Everton 0-1 Espanol
5th Minute penalty.

Not a terrible performance, and we probably deserved a draw, but I would say that if we play like we have in the last 4 games then we're not going to score a single goal all season. They did pack a lot of men behind the ball and took no risks all get, but yet again, absolutely no goal threat from us.

Stekelenburg - 7 - Little to do, one great save early on

Coleman - 6 - Small impact, always a yard behind the ball when trying to get forward

Stones - 6.5 - Little to do. Looked composed

Funes Mori - 6 - Little to do. Still looked rash at times

Baines - 7.5 - Couldn't craft many chances but worked hard

Barry - 7.5 - Typical Barry

Gueye - 6.5 - Penalty aside, he worked hard, made some great tackles and really harried his opponent (like early McCarthy) , but his passing was poor at times and he was caught out on the ball 3 or 4 times. Simplified things as the game went on and improved.

Barkley - 7.5 - Showed some brilliant turns and bits of skill (like old Barkley) , but a lot of his typical faults (tackled often and got the ball stuck under his feet) . Missed a penalty, but it was a brilliant save, to be fair.

Deulofeu - 6 - Minimal impact, a few lazy touches and passes. Closer to his game against United than his first 2.

Mirallas - 6.5 - Couldn't craft much but worked hard and covered back well

Lukaku - 5 - May as well have not been on the pitch. Had a good shot early on but was completely anonymous and wasted his only chance of the game after that.

No subs made any real impression except Davies, who continues to look promising.

---------------

I know pre-season isn't a reliable marker for how a season will go, but we've left it way too late to make any signings that can start the season and the team looks no where near ready for our match against Tottenham. We have defended well enough, any of our last 4 games could have gone on for another 3 hours and we wouldn't have scored.

If Lukaku stays, we can expect a season of him putting in zero effort and flouncing every time he doesn't get the ball, if he leaves, we've left it too late to get a proper replacement and Kone looks just as dreadful as ever.

Going to wait and see how things go, but I think we can expect a tough start to the season.

If there not going to play for the shirt lukaku and stones need to be gone.
It'll sow discord in the team if they stay and it's two crucial positing we need players in who are going to work for the team.
People will say "where will we geta 20 goal a season striker from" or "stones will be a world class cb were will we get a replacement" it's simple, well have to find one.
Neither player wants to be there and may well be a hinderance over time so I don't see the point in keeping them when we can take the money a buy suitable replacements

Anybody remember when we kept lescott and played arsenal 1st game of the season? . we lost 6-1 and lescott cost us 4 goals because his head wasn't right. Don't want stones doing the same.

Sorry Fancy but surely that's why players have agents. so I for one am not buying that they did not know that they were not getting extensions. To then go public and tarnish the club that has paid you handsomely for the past 3 years whilst you have hardly played is not the actions of anew Evertonians IMO. He still gets access tour Finchley Farm for his rehab on his injury wereas if it was me it would be on a waiting list with the NHS. So yes Tony the people's club or the underdog tag has gone and football is a business and in order to be successful in business you have to sometimes be ruthless.

These bony rumours make sense, city want Stones but more than likely due to pride or face won't now offer 50mil for Stones. Give us bony + 35 mil and both teams are happy plus our cut to barnsley I assume is on 35 mil only, so save some more money and with Holgates performance against Manchester United compared to stones's I wold rather keep Holgate than stones anyway.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

06 Aug 2016 12:17:18
Holgate is young mate don't expect too much too soon he has to be blead in properly can't just throw him straight in, the UTD game was a friendly the tempo was slow but in the league it will be much more fierce good player though but will need time adapt it will take a bit of time.

I agree stef, if the so called rumours are true and we want Williams and kone or even bruno Indi then that's are starting CB pair with a developing Holgate as back up with galloway and even browning. Add jags, mori pretty healthy mix of CB's.

The cut to Barnsley would be 15% of the £35 million PLUS 15% of the value of the player thrown into the deal. An independent panel determines the value.

Im a Hibbo fan and agree its a terrible way to be treated to find out your not wanted by the club. However that's the Hob nobs at the club doesn't have anything to do with the fans or anyone else at the club. One thing that comes out in the article is he hasn't asked anyone of the Hobnobs to explain to him why it was done the way it was, but has decided to keep shtum n train on his own embarrassed. Grow some Hibbo, you were no nonesense when you played so go in and demand reasons if your so aggrieved, i know i would, stop waiting for them to talk to you it won't happen. Hibbo hasn't played hardly for the club the last 3 years, through injury and form, i was there along with thousands to see his Testimonial and goal riot, we all felt then it was a last hoorah, so how else would he like to say his cheerio's, thought that was as good as it gets for a player at a club to be honest. Get some backbone Hibbo, not go moaning to the Papers, got to the Hob nobs themselves at the club.

They were both told back in March that they would not be offered a new deal. I just do not understand why this story gets repeated and rehashed.

Agree3 Disagree1

06 Aug 2016 11:58:35
His agent is well paid to look after him, he would have known before we released players, he had an extra 2 years contract from Everton, he had a testimonial, even uses finch farm after being released, and he repays the club by moaning in public to the press, rightly or wrongly, going to the press instead of the club is the wrong way to go about it.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Aug 2016 13:11:56
Can't understand the way some of you are turning on TH over this. The club, if the claims are true, have acted in a disgraceful manner in the way they dealt with the release. People's club? Not a chance.
After 25 years at the club he has earned the right to be told face to face that his services are no longer required. Basic common decency.
It doesn't matter that he was given a two year deal despite injuries and loss of form, it doesn't matter that he had a testimonial or that he has been using FF to recuperate, he had every right to do that interview to put across his side. The club has dropped a bollock on this, you can't blame the lad for airing his views.

Great answer Blue :) , he needs to man up with his millions, paid thousands a day for playing football, my heart bleeds for him, he should try continental 12 hour day and nights for ten years where when your wages go in at the end of the month you are still overdrawn, idiotic statement from a spolit rich boy, embarrassed himself and take a while to come back from that.

06 Aug 2016 09:09:14
It is very sad that Hibbo felt that he should go to press with his comments. Especially the "horrible ruthless business" bit. I suspect his many years at the club have made it very difficult for him to come to terms that his career is now over. The timing is also sad with the takeover by Moshiri and Bill Kenwrights poor health and a change of manager. I suspect there have been some changes within the "people's club". I also suspect that Hibbo is being "wound up" by his missus or mates who can see his "hurt". But hey, I also suspect there will come a time in the future when he can look back with fond memories rather than hurt and then he will regret his ill-advised comments to the press.

What has the wages he's earned got to do with it? Every footballer in the top league is on decent money, no matter how good or bad they may be. The point of this saga is that, despite being at the club for a quarter of a century, nobody has the decency to say 'thanks for the service but you are no longer needed at the club'.
How many on this forum have had a go at the club because they feel they don't keep the fans updated with what's going on behind the scenes? Plenty of you. So if you lot feel the need to moan on here why have you got a problem with an ex player doing the same? Double standards.

06 Aug 2016 06:46:48
So Tony feels the clubs not the same any more? Good years of, let's stay in the comfort zone and, accept our club will never be a top side again.

Feel more sorry for BHS staff now they did get totally shafted.

Believable5 Unbelievable2

06 Aug 2016 08:44:44
Bad press for the club for sure!

However these things happen and the players and/ or the managers involved get miffed throw hissy fits when they get the chance to etc. . . usually because some 'workaday' hack
smelt an easy griping story!

So Tony we ain't the 'Peoples club' anymore?
Methinks that was an idealistic perception of a newly arrived DM who was desperate to get the fans to warm to him!

The so called 'peoples club' label was just too 'underdog' for me and perhaps depicted a plucky wannabe outfit that is and always will be in the shadow of something bigger!

Maybe this is not the case now?!

Agree4 Disagree0

06 Aug 2016 09:22:55
The club made a mistake by not being human enough to tell him personally. It's not difficult to do so they should take full responsibility for letting themselves down.

However I find it strange that Hibbo was so vocal about it. I'm a bit dissapointed by his naivety there. Saying stuff like this in the press often looks a bit desperate to me.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Aug 2016 09:32:35
I'm gutted that Tony and Leon didn't have the chance to say goodbye. However, they both new they were not going to be offered a new contract otherwise they would have been offered a new contract before it went up on the website.

The club may have thought the manager had already sorted this out before he was sacked or a number of different reasons.

Personally I wouldn't have gone public no matter what had happened. I probably would have asked for a meeting to find out if there were any plans and if not made plans. The fact he hasn't made any plans is a bit daft but I'm sure the money in the bank will get him through.

As for the people's club. The players are not the people. What the club does for the local community is second to none in football and for him to call the club on this is both selfish and unfair. If the club has changed in how it treats it's players then maybe they were too soft in the first place.

05 Aug 2016 23:37:04
Just read the daily mail article with Tony Hibbert and for all the great things happening at the club I hope it's not true and don't want to lose what's great with our club it's a shame to see great servants being cast off and I know we need to move forwards but don't lose our integrity.

Sorry Tony but it doesn't take a genius to realise that after being injured for most of the last 3 years that you weren't going to get a new contract. If by January you hadn't heard anything regarding this then you should really be getting your agent to put the feelers out to see who if anybody would like you?

To me this stinks of bitterness from a player who was paid handsomely for being a tackler and nothing else. He now goes to the press, injured i may add and moans that we are no longer the peoples club and that it's a dog eat dog club, why? Because we don't pay players to attend the treatment room?

He is still able to use the facilities for rehab to his injury, well if I was the club I would now send him packing to the NHS waiting list see how he likes to live like us normal people do. Used to think he was a good down to earth lad from Huyton who never forgot his roots, that opinion has been tarnished by airing your dirty linen in public, and probably for a nice fee too. Must be mates with Ryan Taylor there stories are very similar!

May I just say if it has not been said already, I am absolutely disgusted that this Club I have supported for over 60 years has not bothered to talk to those players of some standing such as Hibbert (25 years) that they have let go (and not even face to face) without a face to face or even one and one.

I have to agree that the way he and Osman were treated was not good but I am more disappointed he has spoken out. He has been injured for almost 3 years and hardly played. He received a testimonial and was paid every week so I do not think he has anything to complain about. He was an ordinary player at best and his woeful performance against Chelsea in the FA Cup final was one of the reasons we lost. I would have thought better of him if he had kept his gob shut.

Agree2 Disagree0

06 Aug 2016 04:11:47
His woeful performance against Chelsea was as such IMO down to total lack of cover by a certain Mr Osman which left him as the sacrificial lamb at half time but having said that when will these people learn that they are paid vast amounts of money whether they are playing or on the treatment table and that to represent our great club is an honour and not something to go bleating to the press about .
