A lot of reports about shawcross and Rolando at the moment. I'd take shawcross in a heartbeat. He may not be the silky passer of a ball bobby likes but he's a very good defender! Exactly what we need at the moment! Get him in bobby!

Love deadline day on this site :D non stop posts, rumours posted tonight won't be visible on everton rumours 3 at the end of tomorrow night, 99% of them are rubbish, hopefully a good deadline day, please bobby, a centre back, right back (or centre back who can play right back, not the other way around), get henen done, i'm hopeful of a goalkeeper, however unlikely, maybe another striker if kone (cammmmmeeeeelllllll) can't get fit, no sales please roberto apart from maybe a silly offer for someone like joel or alcaraz

Southampton are closing in on Alderweireld, Fiorentina on Richards if you believe ssn. If Shawcross arrives let's get behind him, it wasn't that long ago people said he was the answer for England and that Manchester United were going to resign him! let's all support any new faces that may come in tomorrow we need a couple of players in to complete our squad. let's hope it's the beginning of a long and successful season!

The sign of a top manager is to know the right time to move a player out. We will see soon if Martinez is nice or nasty.
Another nice man Roy should have binned Gerrard, Lampard and others but had the decisions made for him. Roy has European qualifiers ahead with only one hard fixture, Switzerland away. He could ditch all players over 28 and still get in top two and qualify.
Will Roy use Stones in the friendly? Will Roy save Jagielka for the qualifier? Will Jags have a blinder or a nightmare? Will the England game make up Martinez mind up?

Got a really sick feeling mccarthy will leave tomorrow, please just be the kebab repeating on me

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If McCarthy does move on, it would have to be because it's the best (only?) way that RM could raise the funds we'd need for incomings to cover/replace the weaker areas (obviously centre back and - one can but hope - goalkeeper) in the first-team/squad. How the loss of McCarthy would leave us stronger - which is RM's mantra about every transfer window - is a mystery to me, but, as always, I'd defer to RM's judgement.

31 Aug 2014 19:57:40
Guys,
We know pre-season was terribly organised and that the World Cup (inc Bobby's commitments to tv) didn't help.
Does anybody else think the loss of Dave billows and Steve tashijan has hindered us more? Have these guys been replaced and more importantly why are our most influential (fitness wise) McCarthy, Barry, Jags looking completely out on there feet 2 weeks into the season!?!?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

At risk of sounding completely naive who are the 2 mentioned?

Agree0 Disagree0

I suppose the fear was that the players might peak too early. Well that fear clearly hasn't come about as far as the defending is concerned! Compare that to some of our attacking play and you'd wonder if the players have all been on the same training and fitness regime.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have been no more affected by the WC loss than any other side with international players?

we need a defence
10 goals leaked in 3 games
unacceptable
this is not everton

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If you'd seen some of the performances - and results - that I have in supporting Everton for over fifty years, then you'd know that this sequence (10 goals leaked in 3 matches) has been exactly how Everton have done on a few awful occasions. But we've always moved on and had plenty of good (some great) days as Everton fans ;-)

What is this fascination with Holtby. If he's not good enough for Tottenham, then he is certainly not good enough for us. Other than his dad is a blue, what else will he bring? Regarding yesterday, it was a freak result, I don't think any one else will score 3 against Chelsea this season, but we have to sort out the back line, Martinez has to bite the bullet and drop Jagielka for Stones. Jagielka has been a liability this season, and you only need to look back to last season to see how successful Stones and Distin were.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Something to do with having extra games and no Barkley and the player himself being avaliable maybe

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry he's still not good enough, lucky he's gone to Hamburg

Just a thought, but Wigan were relatively unfit and poor starters under Martinez and this season it has carried over. I believe that this is because of the replacement of our head of fitness. We now have Richard Evans, the ex-head of performance at Wigan, as opposed to last year when we had Steve Tashjian who has now left the club. This I believe is fundamental to why we have had such a poor start, and the squad still looks unfit despite now playing 7/8 games (including preseason). I'm not sure if this issue will sort itself out but I fear we need a decent centre back to sure up the defence, or we risk undoing all of our hard work from last season. Yes we have played well, but our shambolic defence has cost us four points from two games, in the last ten minutes. (Not counting the Chelsea game because I think they still would've won.) I appreciate the good work that Martinez has done here with the resources that we have, and yes our squad is better than last year, but for actual athletes to fade away at the end of two games, there is something wrong. I hope that by this time in a fortnight, I am proved wrong and I am celebrating a victory over West Brom.

RM says we were unlucky against chelsea, and I could live with that, but we were unlucky against Arsenal, unlucky against . anyone see a pattern. Truth is, you make your own luck, and our luck right now is the result of some very poor desicion makeing, not least, our shambolic pre- season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I"ve banged on about our pre season for a while now. While most of our rivals for a top four place were playing top european sides and playing at least three or four more games more than us in preperation with that, we were playing the likes of Tranmere and flying half way around the world to take on Leicester and taking on the might of German football in Paderbon. It seemed to me that our pre season preperations were thrown together last minute like a badly organised stag night.Saying that I am sure that wasnt the case.

31 Aug 2014 15:19:12
Think it's about time somebody other than Tim Howard or Steven Naismith took some responsibility to organise and discipline the rest of the team. Not once has Baines or jagielka or distin had the rocks to shout at their colleagues when they are out of position or not doing good enough. We need 11 captains in the side if we want to be a real force

Believable0 Unbelievable0

That's probably because Jagielka, Distinc and Baines have been caught out of position so often first 3 games of season. Ever hear the phrase about glass houses and throwing stones lol

I have a strange sort of feeling this morning and I want to say a few things which will no doubt rattle a few people's cages.
Firstly, in the old Moyes era, there is no way we would have enjoyed a spectacle of a game as that. He would have played 1 up front and 1 winger, then loaded the defence and midfield to stifle Chelsea. I was probably Moyes' biggest fan, but even I can say I enjoyed that game yesterday and the way we kept fighting back was a credit to the team and manager.
Secondly, Jagielka has shown a real dip in form. That is obvious to everyone. However, it is not just Jag's form that is down, other players look quite out of fitness. I would say that was also McGeady's worse game for us by a mile. Who knows, Jags may regain his fitness and form in a week or two?
Thirdly, I said a few weeks ago that we would make a 10 million center half deadline day signing. let's hope it does come off. We really need it now!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I hope you are correct about the CB signing Degsy. We certainly need freshening up at the back. It will be interesting to see if Stones plays for England and if so how he plays.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Aug 2014 20:32:01
Sorry degs I disagree, I was probably the most anti mcgeady person on here before we signed him, he played a wonderful pass in to naismith for the goal, if that's his worst game then imagine wgat his best game was like, something that annoys me about mcgeady is his crossing, his corners are beyond awful, but just casual crossing, its not the accuracy, its the style, he floats them in which means our players need to be in the air for about half an hour to head it, and they have to generate the power themselves, but i'm becoming a fan of his with each passing match simply because he isn't afraid to take anyone on, will tackle people when needed and can run all game, 500k I think will turn out to be an absolute steal

Agree0 Disagree0

The best corners by an Everton player in my memory were those by Andy Hinchcliffe. He'd whip them in left-footed with venom so they arrived almost right under the crossbar and our players could attack the ball - and put the keeper under pressure, which you could do back in those days ;-)
Just a pity that the rest of his game - while perfectly acceptable - wasn't as superb as his corner kicks.

Agree0 Disagree0

Dave Thomas used to hit some killer corners for the Latch!

The next 36 hours are going to be critical for our season. We do need a centre half who can go straight into the team. However we don't need to panic and bring in players who are no better than those we have. I would like to see Stones given the next 3 games with a new CH as insurance and to replace Distin over the season.

Couldn't agree more. The gamesmanship backfired too. It certainly didn't put him off his game!

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Aug 2014 13:33:10
Woke up this morning and felt like one of those Sunday mornings when you can remember parts of the night before after a skin full. Naismith superb again, 3 fantastic goals, he's the new Timmy, hit the post, hit the bar, Eto scored for us and for large parts of the game dominated a Chelsea team tipped to win the premier league. Then slowly you start to remember the dodgy bits you would rather forget. Like our defensive side of our game. I wouldn't single out one player, I know Jags is getting a lot of stick on this forum, but I felt that our midfield let us down yesterday, it was very static compared to the movement Chelsea had with Willan, Fabregas and Hazard. Playing with two wingers against this lot maybe was not one of RMs best decisions as Barry and the immense McCarthy (how much did we steal him for?) were overran each time Chelsea attacked.Maybe an extra central midfielder, Besic ( oh sh::#, just remembered, what the f@:K was he doing) or Gibbo may have offered our back four a little more protection.
The interesting part for me is reading the papers this morning and listening to RM after the game, it is the first time he has acknowledged how poor a defensive unit we were yesterday. In my humble opinion, If he is going to play with two wingers then he needs to play three at the back.
Can I just say though I thought Costa was superb. I hope Rom gets a bit of that fire in his belly, he would be twice the centre forward he could be. Going to sleep off the rest of my footy hangover. keep the faith boys.

Let's not be too down with last nights game. Firstly we gifted the premier league favourites a 2 goal start and showed great spirit with the performance from there on in. There second goal was offside but then so was our second against the Arse so that's football. I agree with an earlier post that its very rare to see composure as that shown by naisy in front of goal, the man is exceptional as was eto's cameo. Also let's be honest and say howard should have been sent off and then who knows what scoreline we would be looking at. The most disappointing thing was that I doubt any team will score 3 against chelsea and let's not forget hitting the post and bar. If mirallas's effort had gone in it would have been 4-5 and who knows what would have happened then. The killer is that each time we came back they scored again. I though there 4th and 5th goals were in slow motion, our defence looked so slow and that's the third game in a row fitness levels looked drained towards the end of a game. Having said all that I still think we are only a couple of players off being our strongest squad for years. A decent CB and preferably another ST or attacking midfielder would be the final pieces of the jigsaw for me. We had 3 points after 3 games last season so let's not beat ourselves up over the 2 points we have at the moment. Just imagine us sorting our defence issues out and we will be right up there. COYB

Didn't get to the game as I work away, but my brother phoned on his way home, so depressed I thought it best to tell his wife to take his shoe laces off him. I watched motd and like everyone else, couldn't figure out why it was so easy for Chelsea.
Our closing down was like a pre season friendly, close to within 2 yards so as not to pick up an injury and then let them pick out a pass. The first goal being a prime example, plus Jags thinking to himself, shall I move out now and play Costa offside, ermmm ok then, too late! Bainesy did the same on the 2nd, admittedly he did catch him marginally off, but moved out way too late. 3rd goal McCarthy let the guy run right past him as if he had lead in his boots, Seamus unlucky though. 4th goal Matic with all the time in the world on the edge of the box, shall I go right, no I'll switch to my left peg and hit it with that. Jags and Buzz stick a leg out but half heartedly. 5th goal, McCarthy again chasing players but not with any urgency, watched his man play a one two stands there ball watching and his man runs in behind him and slots home. 6th Besic what was he thinking? Jags slips on his backside but calm finish from Costa. Positives, we scored 3 great goals, Rom was unlucky with the header off the bar and the move where Super Kev hit the post was an unbelievable save and a fantastic move. Some of our guys look like they need to run up and down the sand dunes at Southport more often, train harder, get fitter, play like its an honour to put that blue shirt on and not look for the next contract before slipping into holiday mode. let's start today! Come on you blue boys!

what a crazy game that was, we looked excellent going forward and will score lots of goals this season, naismith was excellent again I can see him getting around 15 this season, mirallas was superb too, eto'o looked like a star as soon as he came on. I can't figure out why we have started so poorly in defence, jags and distin do not become bad players over night, it must be lack of communication or lack of fitness, for the west brom game I would bring osman in for barry and stones in for jags, just to change things up a bit, we have squad players to use so let's use them.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

31 Aug 2014 13:28:38
Not many teams will hit chelsea for 3! however our defence was poor Jags has absolutely no confidence since the word cup and was caught several times, also think Besic now neeeds some game time as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Aug 2014 11:40:09
If we attack west brom and palace like that we should take 6 points and start to get back on track. October through to February are not bad months for us in terms of fixtures. Last year we had dropped 6 points at this stage to 3 relegation contenders, this season we have dropped 7 but played 2 of the top 3 in my opinion.

Yesterday we showed every team in the premiere league how not to play against Chelsea.

Just a thought; I think Martinez has been a great success for our club, but do we think he will be as successful with his defensive purchases as he has been with midfield and attacking? Just looking at his premiere league stats, his teams have conceded 324 goals in 193 games. I was surprised with how few goals we conceded last year, however changes now need to be made. Stones has to come in, even if he makes the odd mistake it can't get any worse than yesterday.

On a positive note Eto'o has just scored for everton! never thought I would say that! And he looks quality. Naismith has got to be the first name on the team sheet a great role model for youngsters at the club, he has worked hard to improve his game and his confidence is sky high.

Ok I'm going to be brave enough to say this because I firmly believe it.
It Is time for jags to move on!
I have always regarded him as one of the best centre halves in this league but he is now past his best and is making too many mistakes.
We need a commanding centre half who can organise a defence that is capable of Martinez's style of play.
In my opinion john stones should start every week!
We could've and should've took 3 points for
Leicester, arsenal and Chelsea!
If we'd have stayed tight at the back then I am certain we had too much for Chelsea in the second half.
What do you think blues?

The spine of the team is the key to a good side. We have, Howard, Jags, Barry and Luk. So in reality we are on crutches. It's easy to say get rid of him, bring in him, but is it that simple. For some reason that defence just isn't working, they don't appear to be able to play Robs way. I believe this league season will see us mid table, mainly because we will draw more than we will win. However, I watch the under 21 and under 18 teams play, and they can and do play the Robbie way. The future is bright guys, it might just take a couple of years of pain first.

For some strange reason i'm not too bothered about the chelsea game .we played them an arsenal an leicester off the park .its the same as last season it takes us 6 ish wks to look fit and ready.jags is a major problem because he's so nervous anytime the ball or players go near him he's putting howard off his game. Naismiths stepped up in barkleys absense and were the second highest scorers in the league .so loads of positives and to be honest if your going to get beat that's how to do it

I noticed Swan didn't do it so here's my ratings for the Chelsea game.

Howard 3- Let down a lot by the defense but was very poor. Looked uncomfortable and clearly has no faith in his defense. Should've done better and more composed between the sticks.

Coleman 7- Attacked really well but defensively it wasn't his best performance. Looked a bit intimidated by Costa's size.
But all in all played reasonably well.

Jags 0- Worst performance I've seen from him! Always aloud them too much time, couldn't pass and constantly put Tim under pressure with his back passing. Sorry no positives for him today! Needs a spell on the sideline.

Distin 3- Much like Jags but seemed to add a bit of a physical presence during set pieces.

Baines 6- Looked good in attack but clearly misses Pienaar. Some good movement down the left and signs of good link up play. Defensively looked unsure at times and was trying to play the offside trap but Distin kept playing them on.

Kev 8- Played well, looked like one of a few players who looked up for it today. Took his goal well.

Barry 4- Looks way off the pace and didn't provide enough cover defensively.

McCarthy 5- Same as Bazza defensively but some good link up play in attack for the last 30 mins.

McGeady 6- Showing signs of improvement some intelligent runs but just needs to get the ball in the box earlier.

Naismith 10- Couldn't fault him today. I always had faith in him and he's beginning to show what a class act he really is. Works his socks off and his composure in front of goal is one of the best in the prem.

Lukaku 4- Showed glimpses of what he can do with his hold up play but for me hasn't done enough so far to justify his price tag. Seems way off the pace.

Besic 0- Didn't get much time but what a mess of the time he had. Everyone keeps questioning Bobby about not playing him but showed why he hasn't been getting game time. Some time in the reserves. Looks like a typical young guy trying stupid things to impress.

Eto'o 10- For the time he was on looked like a great acquisition. You could see his experience and knowledge with his great reading of the game, smart through balls and a world class header for his goal.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - very harsh that dunc, dont get me wrong the defence was poor, but we never got beat 20-0 mate....come back swan all is forgiven.. :)

Besic got two mins, needs full game before you can make a statement like that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Besić was only on for 5 mins, you can't judge him off that

Agree0 Disagree0

Bit harsh on tim defence left him with no chance jags I agree should be dropped terrible in all three games give stones a go I thought mcgeady had a good game can't judge besic on two mins maybe he should be given a start some players just don't look fit at the moment eto'o looked really good don't think we need to worry to much yet had a tough start with Chelsea and arsenal if we can keep attacking like we have bin I can see a lot of goals coming for us

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry Ed I'm just furious Goodison is usually a fortress no matter who we face but to concede 6 is terrible might aswell have been 20. I will be over it by our next game though haha

Have to say when we lose I am quite down for several days, but I am not down today as much as usual, Taught there were some really good displays today, Coleman was superb unlucky with OG, great ball for Mirallas goal. Barry was exceptional with his passing and movement, Naismith was brilliant incredible workrate and 3 goals in 3 games, and will make it hard for Barkley to get back in if he can keep it up, McCarthy was super except for been caught on his heels when Hazard ran away from him for the OG goal, but he put in some great tackles and won a lot of ball back for us and rarely lost it, Mirallas was outstanding, took his goal really well, he was creating all over the pitch and unlucky with the chance there keeper pushed on to the post, which I believe was the pivotal moment in the game, as they scored seconds later so instead of 4-4 it became 5-3, McAidey played a part in two of our goals, and had a couple of decent runs, but faded in and out of the game a little to often. Lukaku put in a good shift and unlucky with a super header from corner, Distin knocked in the rebound but was offside, Eto was immense when he came on and what a quality finish his goal was, really excited to see more of him in our famous blue jersey, Baines worked hard, but struggled to get back when they broke and was caught up field on a couple of occasions, not 1 of his better games but was not all bad, Distin struggled with the movement of Chelsea front four, and did not get close enough to Mattic for his goal, that said was the better of our centre backs, felt a bit sorry for Besic but a crazy first touch, he will learn from that and get better, good to see he did not shy away and did ok after that, will still have a good future for us, no doubt, Not 1 of Tims better games either but made a good save from Costa early in the second half and did not have much of a chance with any of the goals, but could of been sent off when he clearly handled outside the box early in the game and nearly lost his head with Costa and got booked on another day the ref might have reached for a red a little bit lucky twice, finally to our skipper, Jags had a nightmare, does not seemed to have recovered from a poor WC, Very lacks at times, seems to be on a different page at times to the rest of the team playing players on side, been very quiet, his confidence is clearly shot and he needs to be taken out of the firing line for a while, I am sure he has the character to come back stronger. Its time for Stones to come in and show the form of last season, its a big call for Roberto to make but I am sure he will, I think the scoreline flattered Chelsea, we look really good going forward and I still expect a big season from us, and remember we won't be playing Chelski every week, good time ahead, COYB

In all the fuss, I must have missed it, but where is the apology, none from the manager, none from the players, none from the owners. All people who will not fail to pick up their wages. A ticket for that joke performance, cost some people, 15-20% of their weekly wages. Some of those players should consider where their £50,000 plus came from, sleep well lads, thanks for your "efforts"!
