We have not been at the races so far this preseason, however a new system and different teams for 1st and 2nd half’s gives MS a chance to see what he has now. Not to say he knows his first 11 yet but I do think he has an idea, don’t be surprised if the team that plays the final game against Valencia will not change for both halves and will contain most of the starting 11 for Wolves. Still think 2 more will come in and we do bang on about giving youth a chance I do believe with the youth we have they can fill the bench and some may even start I for one can’t wait for the start of the season and will judge at xmas 👍.

I think from memory, Jags or Seamus explained this lethargy. Doing double training each day has left them leggy. I hope this is the reason for in the first half (most anyway) against Lille and Lyon they looked good. Game this weekend should tell us more.

Liverpool echo reporting that if mina doesn't sign the club has contingency plans there and they are Gibson, mawson but know he looks of to Fulham, Ben mee of Burnley and Marcos rojo personally I would go for tarcowski think he is class but not rojo he's crap.

Whats everyones thought on Pickford missing the last friendly we have coming up - I know he is due an extended break but I would have thought he would have definately played this next game - for confidence etc. if we do get any new defenders in between now and the first game hopefully communication between them won't be a problem.

There is talk of him extending his current contract but I hope these whispers of Chelsea possibly sniffing around does not turn his head.

Hi Ed.
Not posted for a long long time on the site, i even had to re register. what's your feeling about the forthcoming season? Myself i feel it will take a couple of seasons of transicion.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - im expecting a bit of a bumpy ride to be honest jimmy, we are someway off the beaten track and its going to take a bit of time and patience which is something we evertonians are not famed for, my hopes are for a top half finish with a brand of football that is entertaining but with solidity in midfield and defence, but with the look of our back four at the moment that may be the hardest part of the task, but there is time yet and i am looking forward to the journey mate...great to hear from you..

On a slightly different note. I love this time of year, and on deadline transfer day, I get the beers chilled and takeaway on speed dial, with sky sports news on, Liverpool echo website up, and the rumours site up as well. I've done this for years. and regardless of who Everton buys between now and then. I will be there this transfer deadline day. on tenterhooks, with a full belly, and sweating. 😀.

20 mil Mawson. Can't we just try to compete for centre back please?
What's our issue with our lack of ambition getting the defence?
Why are we always involved in long drawn out negotiations?
Are we not attractive because of our neighbours or something?

Something had better change asap because I'm about to wash my hands of this shambles.

We're far weaker than last year at this point. I just despair at our lack of urgency sorting out targets. This week had best end on a high because I won't accept last season's shambles again. I'd rather tune out all together.

Disgraceful comment. Once a blue always a blue. We have spent 40 million already. Looks like another 25 tomorrow. New manager. New director of football. New stadium. Probably 2 more to come in.
I like many on here have dreamed of times like this.

I would and have followed Everton through far worse than this. We have England’s no#1 GK. We have just signed a £40 million Brazilian forward. We have plans for a new, state of the art stadium. No, our current situation is not ideal, but to think that nothing is going on behind the scenes is just naive. It’s not for you to accept, or not accept. Go ahead and wash your hands of it, you won’t be missed,

Been reading the various posts on here for years now. It's always interesting, sometimes gets a bit fractious, is def hard to understand sometimes, and quite often funny.

During that time we've had so many new beginnings it's hard to remember them all. So much so that yesterday my 12 year old asked me why I bother, why Everton and not Brighton (nearest club) , or Arsenal, or one of the other clubs that win things.

It made me think, and here's my two penneth on why I bother.

For me, it's much, much more than football. I know a lot of clubs do a lot of good work in the community. Everton, though, have a free school that changes people lives by making it cool to go to school when everyone else has failed. The pros in the club paid for housing for homeless people out of their own pockets.

If a request is made by anyone, the club bends over backwards to help. For example, I sponsor a charity that helps kids go to schools they would not otherwise be able to go to because they can't afford the uniform. A request went into EFC for some old/ used PE kit, and we received a response that simply blew us away. Generous is not the word to describe it.

I am sure there are many more examples that are simply not made public.

So, whilst I would love them to win everything in sight, sign every galactico on the planet and be the world's biggest footballing brand, I am quite happy to follow a team and a club that contributes more than that.

So if they don't get into the top 6 this year I'll pull what is left of my hair out, grind my teeth, and then be happy to be blue.

I told that to my son, and the look he gave me made it clear he thought I was bonkers and very strange all at the same time.

What about you, why do you bother?

Agree2 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 18:31:47
Well said! Need a few more like this. We aren’t going to win league or CL. Probably not a cup but if the players and fans show pride in the blue and play quality football I’m more than happy. We are losing the league to American, Arabic, Russian, billionaires. There clubs are no bigger than ours. We have to build and have to come together as one!

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 18:46:45
Great post Sussex.
I, like you, don’t buy into this idea that it’s all about trophies. It can’t be. Many, many fans support teams far lower down the footballing ladder than Everton and moan far less. In my time as an Everton fan, over 30 years now, I’ve had pride in the way the fans and the community has conducted itself. Current expectations of some fans though are unrealistic and unhelpful.
True fans back the team through good and bad.
I’m feeling positive about the new season - at the very least we know Silva will go out to win games, press teams and excite the crowd. Bring it on!

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 19:05:57
I bother because when I was a kid growing up on the most deprived estate in the country, only one pair of trousers one pair of shoes and a bike made up of stolen parts (sorry about that by the way) . I could go to school and compete in football bragging that made me forget that I had nothing.
I could hold my own and no one could argue.

We won stuff, we played the best football you’ve ever seen. And I was equal to those who had.

If they never play like that or win anything ever again in my lifetime I will still be grateful and loyal. Although I yearn for silverware right now.

My son is a red, but he knows not to ask why I’m a blue. And if he ever did he’ll just be told that I didn’t make the choice. I was chosen.

Agree2 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 21:51:18
That post really struck a chord with me Sussex.

My dad was a blue, his dad before him also, and I became a blue as a result. I was given a season ticket at 5 and went to near on every home game till I was 18 and moved away for Uni. For those 12/ 13 seasons, I mainly saw relegation battle after relegation battle (which was horrible and stressful) until I went away. That happened to coincide with our upturn in fortunes and we finished comfortably in the top half.

I’ve not had a season ticket since or managed to get to a game for 12 years or so as I live on the South Coast. 4 weeks ago my son was born and I have been thinking of whether I push him to become a blue or let him decide his own fate.

I can’t claim I was in it for the trophies (the year we won the FA Cup I was on a school residential and couldn’t go the game) but I remember some great games and players over the time I watched. I missed out on the golden 80’s squads but remember watching some great players who inspired me to kick a ball about in the park. Whether it be Hinchcliff whipping the ball in, last ditch defending by Ball, Watson leading from the back (what a cracking player he was) , Davy Weir, Richard Gough (old timer but great understanding of the game) ; the likes of Beardsley, Parkinson, Kanchelskis, Speed, Arteta or Cahill running the midfield; Cottee, Fergusson, Radzinski (loved his pace) up front; or two of the best players I saw pull on the shirt, Martyn and Southall. all these players brought me entertainment and hope at 3pm on a Saturday. That’s why I stuck with the blues. Sure for every one of those named there was a Barlow or Angel but they were my team.

Do I allow my lad to follow in these footsteps or carve out his own heroes? The big advantage I had was the affordability to go to games to see all these players. In this day and age I feel the games on TV are going to capture the imagination of youth - the more you are on TV, the bigger your support base will be. Where that will leave us. anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

Hi Ed025, I still log onto the site every day to keep up with what's happening but I haven't been posting much lately.
To be honest, I miss the funny banter that we used to get a few years ago. Everything seems to be serious and intense lately. We're known for our sense of humour, (& being Evertonians we've needed it over the years! ) , but there's not been much evidence of it for a while.
I've found myself wondering what happened to some of the old gang whose stuff I used to enjoy like MC Rizzla, Wizard of Osman and Cowpat Sid to name just a few. If you're still out there, lads, all the best.
Well, the new season's looming up fast. Let's hope for some better football than last season and a few good signings to cheer everyone up!
Cheers, Ed.

{Ed025's Note - i miss them as well tezza and yourself since you have not posted much, things have not been great for a while at everton and there has been a lot of dejected posters because of it, im hoping things change under silva and brands and we have a bit to shout about mate, im very optimistic that it will but feel that we wont see the benefit immediately, nice to hear from you though my friend..

We kind of should realise where bigger in our own eyes than the eyes of others.
The koeman and Sam days have lowered our profile unfortunately undoing all the work like it or not moyes achieved.
I'm sure there are players that will know what brands can do for a club, and there's players that will think what if what happened to klassen and some extent lookmam and vlasic, will think what if that's me and I end up on the bench.
If lookmam goes and becomes world class it's how it is, he has hardly kicked a ball for us so like klassen won't be a loss we will notice.
It's an impossible task if the supporters have doomed us before the seasons started, win loose or draw the team needs to know it has our support,
Lets give the guys a chance we won't be great this year and have to accept that, and just hope in 2 to 3 years the last 2 to 3 years are a distant memory overwritten by our future success.

Believable3 Unbelievable2

30 Jul 2018 14:02:12
I think Moyes lowered our profile to a plucky underdog team that punched above its weight. It was never the case.

We are an important historical team but one that is in major transition. It will take time AND trophies to change opinion.

When you win a trophy and do it consistently you raise your profile. Just look at City and Chelsea.

Agree2 Disagree1

30 Jul 2018 14:31:04
I think Moyes raised our profile with the underdog tag, before that, especially in the premier league era, we flirted with relegation far too often. I agree with BJU, time, patience and trophies will, hopefully, raise the profile again but some fans need to understand that things won't change immediately overnight.

Agree1 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 15:53:15
How does Moyes get so much stick from us still, he saved us from going out the league and slowly built identity and a work ethic and had us playing some great football in spells but even when it was not pretty we were organised. And difficult to beat and had us regularly challenging for Europe, and bottom line on the pitch we were in better shape then we are now.

Agree3 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 16:47:31
How could Moyes lower it after Smith's diabolical reign and that Of a few Howard the 3rd and walker eras? I like to dig Moyes out too but I won't 're write history to do it.

Agree0 Disagree1

30 Jul 2018 18:36:44
"If I was still manager i'd let the player go to a bigger club and not hold him back" after offering peanuts for our players and probably explained why Arteta went for £10m.

"Managing Everton is like taking a knife to a gunfight" he made me feel on top of the world with this one.

"This is as far as this club can go" after finishing 7th. Couldn't wait for the next season to start.

-Moyes

Go and pick a thousand quotes from proper Everton managers. Take a look at what Royle and Kendall did.

Both of them even though they had bad teams and poor investment didn't degrade the club and made the players realise they WERE at a big club. Both had genuine success.

I'm not saying he didn't a good job. However, he didn't do anything but create an aura of mediocre, even though at times we weren't.

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Jul 2018 00:42:23
Moyes was a great manager he built a team that we could be proud of with very little money. We where allways competitive and he was very clever in the transfare market.
I thnk he would make a wonderfull football director now for our club. He knows the club inside out, knows the fans and a great talent spotter.
It will never happen of course because after Brants will be another European in the job.

30 Jul 2018 15:48:06
Mawson, Gibson is too much of a similar buy to Keane last summer bought on basis of a really good season, I mean look at Burnley they replaced with a reserve and they did even better. Keane should be the leader at the back now but looks no where near being that. Our defence is like a house that’s completely crumbled over the years let’s be fair 3 of them have been there over a decade, but instead of rebuilding a bit by bit, it was left to rot and now apart from Coleman and Holgate I don’t see anything good about defence and that’s worrying, it can’t be neglected, 2x CB’s is vital and get rid of Williams and jags, maybe keep jags as i think he will go on to coaching team.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Mawson is heading elsewhere - it is likely too late to get involved now.}

30 Jul 2018 12:40:16
I have a question for Ed002. Even if Usmanov still has shares in Arsenal I presume he, through his companies, can still provide the funds to build Everton's new stadium, obviously if it was a good business opportunity for him?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - He could but why would he provide funds to build a new stadium for Everton?}

30 Jul 2018 14:40:05
Thanks Ed. I did say "if it was a good business opportunity". I have no idea if it would be or not. I was really thinking of the opportunity to build up the surrounding area for business, pleasure and housing and not just the stadium.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Why would he want to go in to property development - something he is not involved with anywhere, let alone in England? I truly have no idea about your thought process here Mike.}

30 Jul 2018 15:02:19
Probably because I old Ed. My question really was about the legality of it and you answered that question thanks. No idea why he would want to do it any more than why he would want to sell his Arsenal shares and invest in Everton. All seems very unlikely to me.

30 Jul 2018 12:09:06

If he goes they need a sell on percentage clause.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - That will reduce the sale price.}

30 Jul 2018 12:50:07
I’d rather a buy back clause, but I’d imagine that’ll drive the price down lower.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Right.}

30 Jul 2018 13:05:11
Or a buy back option like Barcelona? Not a bad thing to reduce the price with that clause, it’s like a bet and if I was a gambling man I would say Lookman will have a successful career and move on to better things he has all the attributes.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2018 13:30:06

Then that makes you think who do we compare with, Leeds - Villa both of which have chased the dream of champs league and have either had a couple of season doing well and fallen away, obviously in both cases they have had financial meltdown aswell,

Which bring me to my point all plan have to be built on solid foundations, without sorting our defence out we are going to struggle, if you look through our spine we are weak in most areas not all but certainly Cb, Dm No10,

beyond our first 11 we have players that would be possibly top championship players maybe bottom prem, and that isn’t good enough, I know time catch’s up with everyone and players move on but we seem to have be caught in the headlights and not really noticed what’s been going on over the past 4 years,

So you blame the supporters for the poor performance of the managers? Sorry they buy the players, they pick the team and they decide on how that team will play. If as has happened the team turns out to be poor then to blame the supporters?
All supporters have a right to express there discontent if they see players/ manager underperforming or just looking disinterested. Which happened a lot last season.
Liverpool did it with Koop in his first season. City did it with More than one of their managers, and now United are doing it with Jose and the season hasn't even started yet.
Simple solution, play to the best of your ability and give 100% each game and you will get the full support of the fans. Just look at Niasse, limited ability but gets the full support of the fans because he tries.

{Ed002's Note - The support of the fans means a lot to the players and the fans of certain clubs are happy to cause as much damage as they can - Everton has been such a club recently. Try searching on toxic.}

Sorry did I say the club and supporters were lacking in patience not just the supporters. You have every right to voice you opinion Woburn if the team has not give 100% and I don't have a problem with that. My concern is with the replacement of managers without giving them enough time to build a team that they actually want. For me its shortsightedness which has brought us to where we are today.

Well if the support of the fans means a lot to the players. Then perhaps the players need to understand that their performance means a lot to their supporters. Look up professional footballer.

{Ed002's Note - I can see where players will have problems with the attitude of the toxics like you.}

Not a toxic ed just a realist. I have been supporting this club since the early sixties, and still own shares in the club. I have in the past had a share in a private box at the club, though health issues limit the amount of games I can now attend. Hence the reason I now live in the south of France.
All I ask of any player who pulls on the blue shirt is give me all you have got, and I in turn will give you all I have got. Might not be much, but when you multiply it by 36,000 other souls it’s an awful lot.

{Ed002's Note - I am afraid the to say that the toxics and people like you have held the club back.}

30 Jul 2018 15:30:07
Don’t be afraid ed, you don’t know me and I don’t know you. I’m sure you are a nice guy who has some knowledge of football.
However, you have no knowledge of me or what I do or have done. It is people like me who have invested more than just time, but also significant amounts of money into this club that got it through its dark days.
If your going to make comments like the ones above then do your homework, and learn a little more about its history please.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - You might want to look at the damage done by the Everton supporters in recent years rather than trying to trash the players as being unprofessional. It is a trait of many modern football supporters - in particularly norther clubs.}

30 Jul 2018 20:08:02
So you don’t hear Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs supporters complaining then?
I’m not trashing the players, merely asking them to give 100% when they play, and that was evidently not the case last season from some.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Not to the extent of the toxics who deliberately try and damage the club. Hardly decent supporters - this has all been explained before. Perhaps you should go after the journey manager who has had 6 jobs in 4 or 5 years?}

30 Jul 2018 22:25:00
Didn’t we just recently try that?
Personally I like the look of Silva, and I know he has the full support of the board, and that they are prepared to take any flak should the team make a bad start. But they will not lose another manager without giving him the time to build his team, regardless of what supporters say. I fully support this and can only hope others do too.
Now if that makes me toxic then fine.

Thinking about where we are as a club at the minute and the current premier league it’s not that much different to times gone by,

If you think about it Burnley are basically us under Moyes, buying players that are either not fashionable or have something to prove giving them a platform to excel and then selling them on for a tidy profit.
