I will start a new thread on the Tony Hibbert contract extension discussion. I see there are arguments for and against his 2 year contract extension. My point is the same as I have often pointed out with regarding other players/members of staff. Any club should only "get rid" of any player or member of staff if there is a better person lined up or already on the books. I know Hibbert is 2nd behind Coleman, but do we have another better right back ready to play 2nd choice behind Coleman? I believe the answer is no. I also believe that RM knows the chances of us signing a better 2nd choice right back when we are using all our negotiation people trying to sign a center forward and a holding midfield player are slim. Hibbert is Blue through and through. He is happy to start 2nd choice, but I will bet he will do his very best to push for a starting place. What happens if Coleman gets a ban or is injured? Should we get our scouts out looking for a suitable 2nd choice right back? I think they are busy looking at the other positions I mention. Has anyone seen Hibbert in training recently? I trust Rm to know when Hibbert is past it. I think the club has indeed done a great job in securing this experienced, loyal, hard working player. I agree he has limited ability, but back to my original question.who is better that we have or can instantly sign? Nil Sati Nisi Optimum. yes. but "the best" sometimes takes a little time and patience.

Agreed degs, people seem to involved in this modern day full back stuff, hibbert can't go forward fair enough but he's solid at the back, its not just for cover but he obviously has a massive impact on the dressing room and he is a model professional that will teach the kids a few things, its not big news he's signed a new deal but its happened, he's staying and if bobby is happy to have him around then why not

Agree0 Disagree0

Roberto said he was very impressed what seen from Tytis Browning last season if so then he is surely going to be number 2 right back 2 Seamus. I would suspect if Seamus is out Stones will fill in for him firstly.

Browning a centre back mate

Agree0 Disagree0

Swan, great to have you back mate. I have missed our banter. although I know we have sometimes got a bit frictional! I will do my best not to be so confrontational in future! The only thing I would add about Hibbert is that yes you are right that he is not as good going forward as Coleman, but in the last couple of years, he has really worked hard on this part of his game. Just before Coleman cemented his position, Hibbert was in fact getting forwards more and putting in some decent crosses. Added to which, can anyone name me a better tackler/blocker who slides in and just stops wingers getting crosses in from the goal line. I can only think of maybe two. Coleman and Zabaletta. Perhaps Hibbert still looks better in training than Browning? I really don't know.

one more from Fleetwoodblue.
best ever Everton goalkeeper?

HOWARD, SOUTHALL, DAVIES, WEST, DUNLOP.
any others?

Fleetwoodblue.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - southall for me hendo..

02 Jul 2014 22:18:23
Southall easily but no mention of nigel martyn? He was superb

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Jul 2014 22:24:04
Southall is probably the best goalkeeper ever, never mind just for Everton. No point debating that. Although I'd say Howard and West for second and third best Everton keeper.

Agree0 Disagree0

Southall light years in front of the rest,

had he been English he would have owned the keepers shirt hands down,

Just as an aside Andy Gray joked about him wearing a red shirt in the Cup winners Cup final as a kind of faux pas

He wore it only to honour his Welsh background!

Big Nev. not even worth debating.

Agree0 Disagree0

Big Nev followed by Martyn.

Agree0 Disagree0

Anybody that does not put Southall first did not see him play or have a very poor memory, in the worlds best 5 keepers ever.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2014 09:24:48
Big Nev, no contest.
And he wore the red shirt in '85 because it was the only option left to him.
Back then there were only 3 colour shirts available for goalies, green, blue and red. In the ECW final Everton wore blue, Rapid Vienna wore green so New only had one option left unfortunately, red.

Agree0 Disagree0

Southall was the best by a country mile. Given the silly numbers bandied about for average players. How much do you reckon would have been offered for Southall if he was in his prime now. I reckon if Shaw went to Utd for £27m Southall would have to be worth £40m minimum.

Agree0 Disagree0

Southall, but jim arnold gave him a fight for the no 1 jersey

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2014 10:13:50
I reckon Big Nev would still be awesome in goal, he would definitely not leave much room to get the ball past him into the net.

Best goalie by a mile

On his day Gordon West was as good as any, his problem was his nerves. Anyone remember when Jack Charlton started the trend to stand in front of the keeper for corners. West told him 'stand in front of me, and I'll go right through you'. From what I recall Charlton never stood in front of him.

lets look at playing 3 at the back with 2 wingbacks
next season.Use the best we have.
jags, stones, dustin the back 3,
coleman & baines, the best 2 unused wingers in the Prem.3 in midfield our strongest option, but we need 2 real pacemen up front, we have Kev,
but need a.n.other.This would give us 4 + Barkley on attack, & 5 + defensive midfield in defence.
This system is dependent on mobility, pace & fitness.anyone agree?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

02 Jul 2014 22:28:50
I wouldnt, we have struggled whenever using a back 3, our centre backs don't know whose doing what and our wing backs don't know whether to be wingers or full backs, kev should never play up front, 4-2-3-1 when we are not on the ball and a 4-3-3 when we are on the ball

See Ryan Gauld has joined Sporting Lisbon for 3m and they have inserted a 60 million euros release clause. A player we had looked at apparently

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Jul 2014 01:41:17
He didn't fancy playing in England, he has said for a while that he wanted to sample football abroad. We were one of a number of teams that looked at this player

Not posted for a while. Just to say how horrifically disappointed I was to read this morning that Sporting Lisbon had signed Ryan Gauld for £3m. I maintain he is the most talented player at his age I have ever seen from a stand and with a €60m buyout Sporting seem to think so too. this kid is destined and I'm absolutely gutted for that money it's not at Everton, I don't even know if we tried. Knowing us probably not. good luck to him tho.

Oily we would rather give contracts to vetrans mate.

All portugese teams do this, hulk had a 70m one, moutinho 55m for porto, benfica in the past, sporting lisbon have done it with capel etc, they sell for big, personally thought gauld was again, doing well in a poor league, players like max meyer and stuttgart have a 17 year old striker whose name excapes me are both much more talented than gauld and much further ahead in maturity and physically, not by any means trying to argue, I didn't watch him every week but whenever I did he seems quick and all but certainly doesn't suite the premier league, spain or portugal will be good for him

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Jul 2014 23:55:06
So Hulk 70m, Moutinho 55m and Gauld 60m. So he's rated in the same bracket as them at 17. Not bad. As far as your analysis of Gauld as a player and the Stuttgart 17 year old 'whose name escapes' yet you think you know enough to declare he's much more talented: I disagree with every word. But not by any means trying to argue.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2014 01:45:38
Moving to England was never an option as Gauld himself has declared that he was interested in moving abroad. Not even worth arguing about boys, it was never going to happen. If he did intend to move to the EPL then the majority of teams would have been interested, not just us

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jul 2014 07:54:40
Timo werner, that's his name, roberto could give alcaraz a 1 billion buyout clause which rates him in the same bracket as messi of course? No of course not its just making sure if you do sell him, its not cheap, they won't get 60m for gauld, probably not half that, buyout clauses don't represent for a fact how good a player is, its just making sure that players are not cheap and as someone said, its pointless, he himself said he doesn't want to play in the premier league, robertson, souttar and gary mackay i'm always injured steven are other dundee talents we have 'looked at', just hope we get someone soon

With a bit of luck an American Billionaire will have watched the game last night, fell in love with Howard and decides to invest in Everton as a result!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He is a national hero in America now, I'm sure if he was to make a plea for investment for Everton over there now it would be successful, I think Bill might have found his best salesman for the club now.

Agree0 Disagree0

The best salesman for the club imho is Roberto Martinez. If he gets us the success - and raises the club's profile accordingly - then we'll become a more attractive proposition for new investors. If we move to a new stadium as well, then we'll really be on the upward path.
In an ideal world, I think many fans would like any new owners to have the funds to invest seriously, but retain the love of the club - and the patience with how RM is taking us forward - that BK has clearly shown.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Jul 2014 06:15:46
What is going on at our club. 2 members of coaching staff gone Martinez in brazil no new signings and only 2 per season friendlies sorted. Thought it would have been better than this after the way we performed last season

{Ed025's Note - chill john mate..things are happening behind the scenes..

A bit worry too Johnny.Even trust Bobby but everything seem too quiet. For Barry if doesn't want to join us.Let's him go.

I Watched the Germany Algeria game and I admit, I got a bit excited whenever Yacine Brahimi got the ball. Sure, he's an unfinished article, with some rough edges, but he consistently makes positive things happen and his control is at times stunning. He's not a prolific goalscorer as yet, but he's definitely got ability and great desire and has stated that he knows what he needs to improve on and wants to learn with a more established club. I know all these transfer links are mostly horse excrement, but this is one signing I'd love to see.

Me too mate. Think this guy could do really well for us. Especially with McCarthy and hopefully Barry playing the holding role. Him and Ross in the middle, Baines, Coleman out wide, all we need is two good strikers to put it in the net mate.

Tim Howard was immense tonight for the USA, even though they lost, in what has got to be one of the best games of the World cup so far. He's become a phenomenon already on twitter, with some more overzealous fans promoting a campaign for Howard for President. If he wasn't already, then he's undoubtedly a national hero now, making a record 16 saves in a World Cup game. Americans tend to go utterly bonkers for that kind of stalwart heroism. They've already dubbed Howard 'a real American hero'. Blimey. Easy, tiger. I'm made up for the lad, but it makes me worry that he might be off back to the states for good sooner, rather than later.
