Feel for lakaku his name should be on all the back pages of the papers, he is busting his b#lls to score every game. Wouldn't blame him if he jumped ship due to our poor tactics and defence and naive manager.

The possible takeover could lead to Goodison Park being redeveloped - perhaps as a hotel. It'd surely be Fawlty Towers, as many fans think we've already got the comical Spaniard ;-)

If we'd won 3-2 against Leicester and won 4-3 against Stoke, we'd still have the same deep concerns about our defending, but at least we'd have proved that we could game-manage and close out victories. However, we didn't, so the weaknesses of our team are blatantly exposed and the emotions of the fans are raw and the need for RM to do something positive is paramount.
Just a thought - I recall that our fortunes changed under Howard Kendall when he promoted Colin Harvey to first-team coach. Is there someone - this time specifically a defensive coach - who we could call on? Also, it was the lack of European football (albeit due to the ban back then) that caused the loss of key players (and HK) and led to our drop into mediocrity and relegation battles.
Will history repeat itself - but this time without the trophy wins beforehand?

My son and indeed another couple of comments from those around me both at the game and on the walk back to the car were we are a mid-table team with a mid-table manager. No we are not and it is unacceptable. I agree totally with the need for a defensive coach but quite obviously Roberto does not. Lukaku is a different player this season and the reason for that is Big Dunc. Mr Martinez should move heaven and earth to bring back someone of Stubbs character and ability as our defensive coach. Stones for one especially after today should be told he is going no where. We are not a mid table team and should not settle for that. I for one will not accept RM turning us into another Wigan.

David weir or promote unsworth as he's doing a good job with the youngsters. Need to replace the keeper coach. Defently need a leader in the back four, even an aged pro, we never leaked goals when people like watson, gough, distin and jags were playing, when ball is in the area first thing is to clear danger not pass it around the box.

Don't think its just as simple as that Swan. Not too many were saying that last season.

He is top class, no doubt about it. Do you not think his first touch has improved this season? I think there is a big difference in his first touch this season.

Also Swan you didn't give McCarthy much of a chance in your assessment. You do realise he set up the first goal? Went off after what 26mins in his first game back for a month and you say he offers nothing.

Team has gone downhill since he got injured against Bournemouth. Downhill big time. Is that coincidence?

Del boy you also didn't rate. He did score and although it wasn't his best game I thought he done pretty well. At least he tries his best to make something happen.

Looked more like something was going to happen off him more than anyone in midfield. Barkley played well but Del boy always looks like creating something.

Kone needs to be told to either pass or shoot. I hope he seriously doesn't think he can tribal the ball into the net.

29 Dec 2015 07:52:18
NBTB, I did rate Deulofeu, I forgot originally but did do it right below my post. I don't think it's a coincidence as we were doing the same last season even with McCarthy.

Sorry, but enough is enough, can't defend, can't (or won't) play a forward ball from free kicks, won't attack at pace (when we do we are very effective) ewe have an assistant manager who was a centre half, and both our centre backs go missing. I can see a mass exodus of the best bunch of players we have had for a long time because of the buffoon in charge. If you change our strip to Blue and White stripes we could be Wigan re-incarnate, and we know what happened there (just hope Tottenham don't do to us what they did to Wigan, I'm old enough to remember 10 - 4) . Time to call the Taxi Bill.

RM blames the defeat on a poor refereeing decision for the penalty. However, we didn't lose 0-1 - we shipped 4 goals!
RM has said that we must learn to defend better - duhh! It's up to him to coach the players to defend better and to motivate them to win matches and to select starting lineups (and make effective substitutions) that deliver winning performances and not just periods of exciting (but clearly ineffectual) attacking play during too many drawn and lost matches.
I live in hope that the high expectations arising from his first season come to fruition, rather the the despondency of his second season carrying on to this (his third) season. Especially disappointing is that a Champions League qualifying position was there for the taking in each of these three seasons - but we just don't appear to have what it takes :- (

Believable5 Unbelievable0

28 Dec 2015 20:37:20
Well we have let in seven goals over the two last home games which included three penalties. Pretty obvious to all of us (apart from the manager) what are the problems with the defense. Howard's lack of command makes the whole defense nervous and it shows in some of the decisions the defensive players are making.
Howard has been a good servant to the club but I hate to see him both making a fool of himself and for him to be subject to the abuse he is getting at home games from the Everton supporters behind his goal. For God's sake Martinez give him a rest against Spurs. Also the sooner Jags is back the better, we mss his maturity and leadership.

28 Dec 2015 21:44:22
Didnt think it was a penalty at the time and now that I am home definitely not a penalty but no excuse and this is also the dodgy electrician remember we never get anything out of him. Who remembers Caragher on Lescott.

I am disappointed at the result today and I am very melancholic over our season. It may be luck or Tim or martinez or barkley or whatever but I season has not hit the height it should do with players we got. Rom is playing like a world beater. I'm not going to ramble on but I just wish we could get some consistency and string a few wins together and we be up top in league. Just can't see it with fixtures in January. Some tough ones. play city 3 times away to chelski.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

28 Dec 2015 19:54:22
I know 2 games vs city in cup but losing destroys confidence and we almost schizophrenic anyway. Hugely confident going forward but dead nervous defensively. I don't know what the answer is but I agree we need new keeper and the manager to have plan b or c. Even 3 at back is a different plan but he stopped using that now.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Dec 2015 20:27:36
Keeper is a must at this stage. We play Barry to sit in front of back four but he can't defend either. Why not play stones in holding roll and get jags back or a shawcross who can actually defend. We should b far more solid as a result . That's the way Spurs use dier and they have best defence in league.

Agree3 Disagree1

28 Dec 2015 20:40:12
That was a very good game to watch but disappointing in our defence ergo disappointed with our Manager. The bloke has had 3 seasons and managed to destroy a defence that was previously at home especially all but impregnable. We are a lovely team to watch going forward but all so frail at the back. We have a 40 million man at the back that cannot jump, cannot tackle consistently and indeed was responsible for the penalty. Barkley was superb, Lukaku was excellent and had a pop from all angles today. We had a team against Newcastle that kept a clean sheet, we had a team that created chance after chance and then today Mr Martinez makes 4 changes. I can only say we are wonderful going forward but fall to pieces in defence. On the way back to the car in the usual crush, got talking to a guy who hit the nail on the head, we have a Team and especially a defence of talented individuals that somehow Roberto has been able to maintain as individuals but destroy as a cohesive unit. The lad Galloway had for long periods to deal with Shaqiri and Johnson running at him. Kone was hopeless, tried his best but just not good enough. Can only reiterate that yes we play wonderful stuff but would much rather win 1-0 playing ugly football. Finally how the heck Mr Martinez does not warrant criticism from any soccer commentator or pundit is beyond me. After today if anyone does not see the similarities between a Martinez Wigan and Martinez Everton they must still be full of Christmas pud.

28 Dec 2015 19:26:53
Before the ball gets to TH we need to defend, we don't and when it gets through he hasn't done well, particularly the 3rd goal. Martinez keeps saying we need to defend better, but its difficult when he tells the whole team to attack, we lose the ball and there is no semblence of an organised defence there, they are all over the pitch. Stones was an accident waiting to happen today, think all the accolades have gone to his head. He seemed to think he had all the time in the world when clearly he didnt, his positioning for a defender was awful today and the least said about his distribution the better. A kick up the backside for his first really bad game for the club, get back to who he is not who everyone is making him think he is!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

28 Dec 2015 20:45:10
Spot on Howie. Something we can agree on. But what is the answer. Roberto did well the first season and I have argued that was because our defensive leanings were still playing on Moyes time. Since then the same group of players have lost all semblance of a together defensive unit and this is two seasons on. The bloke just does not get it.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Dec 2015 18:55:49
Despite all of our much-lauded possession football AND for all of the plaudits about our football being a "good watch" these days AND for all of the envious eyes cast by "elite" clubs on our better players, we do not consistently win matches.
Whatever RM believes in about the style of football he wants and his dislike of scoring from set pieces rather than open play, this is a results business and he must be judged on that criterion. Sure, he's brought good players to the club and is developing good younger players, but he still needs to deliver reasonable results in the meantime while he brings through the much-heralded "golden generation" of Everton.
The current board won't sack him - especially while there are takeover talks in progress - but he needs to get the team right before our season drops into league mediocrity and cup elimination from January onwards. No amount of exciting moments of exciting football will be enough to assuage the frustration, anguish and despair of the fans.

Like most now i'm begining to see that howard should be rested, like wise barkley, got the skill but not the football insight at moment, maybe it can be coached into him or age may bring it on, but needs the quickness of mind to match his agility, sorry for all those I may have upset, son included.
Also why play kone? He, s better as a sub? I would have took a draw today because I knew stoke would sus us out with our only plan A approach, gutted at that pen though and the late calls by the linesman, very strange. oh well got to sit looking at my smug red work mate now saying how well we played, its getting to me now, ill never learn! hope we start getting a few more lucky breaks and maybe we can also compete with our rivals.?

Were you at the game! Barkley was superb today, he really was. What I cannot fathom is why a team as brilliant as us going forward cannot find it within themselves to press high up the field when the opposition have the ball. At times today we practically had 11 players in our own half.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Dec 2015 21:44:26
As I said mate " sorry if I offend any one about barkley, just my un qualified opinion and I really do hope he turns out a revelation and prove me wrong, really I do. but maybe its the coaching or something. But timing needs to be instinctive. I would love to get on the band waggon but can't at mo. but I had doubts about rom at first and was gladly proved wrong so hope the same happens again, and I gorge myselfe on humble pie but let's try other avenues with who starts were and when, the element of suprise can sometimes be the answer when your least expecting it.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

28 Dec 2015 18:21:50
It's a cop out to blame just one player, penalties get converted more than they get saved. The manager is to blame and that's the bottom line mate. His tactics are one dimensional, he has no plan B, he picks his favourites over those who deserve a chance and he selected such a weak bench today it is untrue! Three cm's on the bench is stupid, especially since there, apparently, was nothing wrong with either Lennon or Kev. Direct your anger at the right person, it is he, after all, that picks the team and sets them up each game.

That statistic is very telling.
For all of our exciting attacking football, we are failing in key aspects - most notably our appalling defending (and goalkeeping) , our inability to convert periods of supremacy into goals scored, and our abysmal set pieces - especially corners.
Based on current form, I can't see anything but a comfortable win for Tottenham against us this coming weekend - we might score a goal, but we'll surely ship a few :- (

Agree0 Disagree1

28 Dec 2015 18:02:20
Howard-1-I'm done, 1st goal not his fault and neither is the 4th, however, 2nd and 3rd are a whole different story. Shaqiri is going nowhere so what does Howard do? Runs away from his goal giving Shaqiri the chance to score, and boy did he. 3rd goal, what is he doing for that cross? What on earth is that supposed to be? Why is he still on his backside when Joselu shoots? . He did some weird hand motion in what I assume was an attempted punch for a first half corner. He's the worst Goalkeeper in the Premier League, if anyone can name me a worse Goalkeeper please do. No doubt his loyal followers will say it wasn't his fault at all.

Coleman-5-Worst crosser in the team and I've said this before, doesn't aim them and they have no pace.

Stones-3-Worst performance by a Centre Back since Heitinga against Villa in Moyes' last season at Goodison. I love Stones but no hiding today he was abysmal.

Funes Mori-5-Won everything in the air and that's about it.

Galloway-6-Did nothing wrong.

Barry-7-Alongside Rom and Tom the only one who has a shred of dignity left.

McCarthy-6-Why did he start? He did nothing and was clearly not fit and Cleverley came on and actually changed the game.

Barkley-7-Kept it well but again not enough going forward.

Kone-6-Worked his socks off but wasn't good enough, some of the abuse he received was disgusting from scumbag fans.

Lukaku-8-On his own again dragging us through everything and gets let down by the defence. Leave Rom, go and have a career.

Cleverley-7-Great ball and hope his injury isn't serious, growing on me each game.

Naismith-6-

He has to go, why were Lennon and Mirallas not in the squad? . Why did McCarthy start? . What were the tactics? . Sick of it all now, wasting this squad and the funny thing is he's in no danger, safest job in Football. More chance of Ranieri being sacked tomorrow than him.

Kone 6? Really. We don't want someone to work there socks off. We want someone who has the ability to score goals and worry defences. He clearly can't.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Dec 2015 05:26:04
Completely agree with you Swan. The part that annoyed me most was when Howard sarcastically clapped us in the Lower Gwladys early on. If you're going to turn on the fans you need to be playing well, not dog s**t.

Worst game I've seen Stones play for us since he was right back a couple of years ago.

As regards Kone he did work hard and deserved a 6, he's just not quite good enough. 3 or 4 times in the second half he got the ball just outside the opposition area with loads of space, then turned like the QE2 and was surrounded.

Lukaku is the best striker in the Premiership at the moment. Imagine how many he would score with a competent team around him.

The worst part for me about our situation is that we have a great side, Martinez just doesn't have a clue how to manage us. Anyone can see Robles needs a run in the team as Howard is awful. He constantly drops players who are playing well, plays unfit players, and sticks with his favourites irrespective of how poorly they are playing. We should be challenging for top 4 given the way this season has gone for everyone else so far.

Dare I say it but stones and Barkley have to go to fund signings. Both are good but vastly overrated. two Stoke midfielders that controlled the game could have come to us in the summer for less than 30mill but oh no you all wanted the bafoon Barkley instead. Oh ang how many teams showboat when they are 3-2 up at home against a decent Stoke side. Barkley needs a kick up the arse and shown the door and yes I agree for the first time that Martinez is not good enough to be in charge of this great club.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

28 Dec 2015 17:55:17
Don't think Barkley played too bad today to be honest mate. Stones has looked under par for a couple of days but we don't have the cover to take him out for game or two. Not that RM would drop him anyway. Totally agree that RM's time is well and truly up.

Agree2 Disagree0

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Dec 2015 17:43:34
Results are becoming as predictable as they are tedious. To score 3 goals at home and lose is nothing short of criminal. We can say Howard was again at fault, that Stones is looking more like a 5m cb and that Kone is just not good enough. But the buck stops with the manager and he is proving to us all that this job is too much for him. He is turning us into Wigan, no doubt about it. They played decent football, got the odd high scoring draw but, ultimately, it was the defence that let them down. RM hasn't changed his style that got a team relegated, without Rom's goals we would be near the bottom of the table.
Enough is enough, the man needs to be gone from our club. 3-2 up with ten minutes to play you should shore up the defence and close the game out. How many times do we have to sit through us conceding late goals that cost us points? Carry on in this manner and we will be lucky to finish top half of the table. Martinez needs to go.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

28 Dec 2015 17:27:47
Here's a post that will get a response. Does no one want Moyes back? Wouldn't let 4 in against Stoke with him at the helm. Not in a million years. We are looking more like Wigan than Wigan themselves!

Defence is dire. The players are obviously better than how they are playing. It comes down to coaching then obviously.

Martinez good at coaching attacking football. Brutal at defense.

In dream world you'd have Martinez coaching attack. Moyes coaching defence. Royle picking the team.

In a dream world like. Not a chance of it happening.

As a pundit on sky sport said this evening, Martinez has turned Everton into another Wigan. He will have formed his own opinion and not said this by listening to fans. Results just not good enough no matter what the score line says. Without Lukaku would be relegation candidates.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Dec 2015 17:49:00
Whoever the manager is, it's the quality of player that is crucial and the question is which of our better players will leave if (more likely "when") we fail to qualify for Europe - in particular if we're not in the Champions League.
Lukaku will surely move to a "big" club in the Champions League.
Stones might be great on the ball, but defensively he still has to improve and be consistent. However, he'll surely want to move to an "elite" club.
Deulofeu has flashes of brilliance, but often fails to deliver telling crosses and he has a bad habit of diving.
Barkley is the only one of out "awesome foursome' (aka the "Fab Four") who seems likely to be loyal, but even he might have to do a "Rooney" and move to play for a winning club.
Tellingly, our best player this season has imho been Gareth Barry and surely he only has another season or two in him at most.
Too many aging players in our squad alongside too many injury-prone players and our many promising youngsters still need time to develop - let's hope we can keep, everything together.

28 Dec 2015 17:58:26

Forget Benitez, the man is a loner who falls out with his players on a daily basis, no man management skills at all. He has won things, no argument from me there, but he has also ruined a couple of teams. His ties are too strong with our neighbours to even make him consider coming to us. A real non starter tbh.

28 Dec 2015 17:09:49
To score 3 and concede 4 is wiganish like. This club under Martinez will not progress anywhere. Your best form of attack is defence. We just seem to attack and leave holes everywhere. His selection of players is baffling. Kone and Howard should not be playing. As mentioned earlier Howard 2nd goal conceded was just embarrassing and the third could he got more of a fist to it. (Not sure) . But this season is wasted that's for sure and if we don't win a cup of some description this would have to be the most underwhelming season ever. When we made champions league eons ago, our side was ordinary but defended like there lives depended on it. This side concede goals like a bottom 3 club.

Believable4 Unbelievable0

28 Dec 2015 17:09:38
I'm one of these that doesn't believe in sacking a manager and giving him time but I have to say Martinez's decisions are costing us points. To start Kone is a disgrace, we are already playing with 10 men before a whistle is blown. If we lose Lukaku, which I truly do think is going to happen in the summer, where are we going to be without his goals. I'm starting to feel worried, to me we have a very strong team and yet others are surpasseing us with the clear intention of improving as a football club, leaving us to slide down the table. Apparent from a keeper and the obvious lone, I can'tell see where our team needs to improve through players given our financial and attraction state.

lukaku? I can see 4-5 players wanting to jump ship. They all need a stronger coach. Not an Everton fan could blame them. Stones needs to be developed tbh whoever pays 50 million are getting a far from complete player . (we have been completely shocking since we lost jagz) . How long can we scream for a strong centre back. This was all so predictable. We needed an experience premiere league defender, we got a very nervous South American for close to 10mil . Riverplate must be laughing their cocks off us.

totally agree, we are weak and that stems from manager, people are saying get jags back ect but he won't change it we was leaking goals with him in the team, prb I've got with Martinez is same I had with moyes both stubborn, both havnt a clue of how to train a team to defend (Martinez) or attack (moyes) , am hoping who ever is looking at taking over is watching the games closely and realising what we are as fans, we had same prob under moyes board had no bollocks to change then but its a collective prob ist Martinez and his back room staff just not good enough.

Getting very fed up with our inability to hold to a lead. What the hell is going on! Howard needs dropping and the sooner Jags is back the better. No doubt RM will only see the positives out of today's performance. It's all becoming very tiresome.

You can't afford to ship four goals at home to anyone let alone a decent side like Stoke City. You also can't afford to have terrible set-pieces (our corners are still rubbish) or have poor delivery from wide areas. Some of our players did some good things, but without Lukaku we'd be in dire straits. If we continue defending this badly - and don't create AND convert more chances - then our results during the coming run of tough January fixtures could be very poor. I await with interest what RM will say about today's performance and result.
Oh well, let's move on - albeit more in hope than expectation.

Well it had to happen didn't it. We Nick it against Newcastle in the last minute, then Stoke Nick it (actually get given it) in last minute. Only Everton can do this. Difference is though, how the hell can you concede four goals playing at home ffs. People saying this is the best group of players we have had in years? Not in bloody defence it's not.

really getting of tired of hearing how Everton's games are so exciting for the neutral and that we are unlucky but play great football, sorry we need to turn these games into wins, conceding four at home is unacceptable, this needs sorting out now!

Well I can say ibe had enough. can't believe we led and let it slip.
I know people will complain but john stones isn't that good seriously jags made him look better.
No1 in the team can score lukaku aside.
Martinez needs to address defence.
We are the only team who play 3 dm and concede every game.

Stonea in brilliant at bringing the ball out but defending (his actual job) he is pretty poor and always has been. We need a ball player like stones and a mountain like shawcross.

. well, here we go again, we're losing yet again, conceding needless goals. & all this after the clueless 1 insisted after our last match we had learned our lessons - but the fact is we just got lucky in the dying seconds of a match we could of lost from a corner. what a load of tripe. we should be doing so much better than we are with this current crop of talented players. the sooner this takeover happens the better, then the pressure really will be on the clueless 1!

Del Boy stay on your feet! I don't care how much tallent some people think you have if I was manager I would pull you straight off the pitch when ever you decide that throwing your self to the ground is better than having a shot or crossing for someone else to shoot
How long do you think it's going to be until you have a nailed on pen turned away because of your constant cheating?

Going to put this out there as it would be interesting to see peoples opinions so. if as expected Benitez was sacked by Madrid, would people be against him replacing Martinez if we were to sack him? Given his past of not only managing the other lot but the small club jibe, all that aside there is no doubting he is good at what he does, ok he didn't do as well at Napoli but before that with Chelsea and even the other lot would he not be a better manager to move us forward with the current squad we have? I would say yes let bygones be bygones and let's have some success to go with the possession and maybe a plan b. Thoughts people?
