Fat figers

- lewin did ok and sandro provided some pace up top. Still think a couple players and time to gel and we could do some serious challenging this season. Just got to get past the banana skins that qualification gives.

Sadly thought the defence was a typical last 20 year Everton defence, looked scared when people were running at them, mistakes, poor passing etc.

This is just my opinion.
We looked very rusty. To be expected so early in the season. Keeper made sone good saves. Thought baines and Keane played well but Williams is awful and Martina looked lost when he went past half way.
Geuye and Schneiderlin kept it right and look like turning into quality players this season. Rooney and klassen ooze quality but only in spurts today. Thought kev and calverrt-.

It's early doors guys and i think we will beat them easily away as they will have to come out. Only disappointment for me was Williams who should get bumped for Jags.

Same here Smit Martina aswell for me didn't look convincing but its the 1st competitive game and there were some bright points namely Sandro and once Klassen finds his feet will turn on well.

We are bound to look rusty. Sandro just oozes silky play. Top talent. Holgate is more than capable at right back imho. One our best players towards the end of last season imho.

My concerns are not with creativity. I think that in the next 2-3 games. as match sharpness kicks in, there will be creativity in abundance with lookman, mirrallas, klaasen, Rooney and Sandro. main issues for me is we do need a proper big CF. and I think defensively we looked poor as a unit. Martina and Williams making some really poor decisions. However, very early days, and they have a week to make good on shortfalls.

But are Martina and Williams going to be regulars? 3 more to. come in according to Koeman.

Be more than happy for williams to return to swansea as make weight in sig deal £40 million + him, gives them a face saver in their crazy £50 million fantasy.

Lucky to get a win tonight. Shows that the team are going to need a while to gel together. And far too sloppy for me. And is it me or has banies forgot how to cross a ball.

Sandro looks really positive but:

-A target man is needed (Hopefully Giroud)
- Siggurdson is a must. Need more quality in the final third.

Believable3 Unbelievable4

27 Jul 2017 22:14:01
Sandro definitely made a difference when he came on with his energy pace and trickery.
I would agree though that the team needs to gel and also needs to get match sharp, few too many sloppy passes which we all know Koeman will not be happy with.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jul 2017 22:14:07
Bit harsh, not really sloppy bar one or two minor blips. Just seemed too casual for me, taking it slow, controlling the game but not looking to attack the final third. Felt like the players were finding their feet and gaining match fitness thinking they'd still get two or three goals which just didn't work out.
Im a little nervy about the away match with no support at a dodgy ground but feel we showed more than enough to be confident of getting the win. As Baines said, now we know more about them and can plan accordingly.
Side note, Super Kev looked to be ahead of the rest in terms of being ready to play and could play a key role this year imo.

Agree1 Disagree2

27 Jul 2017 22:15:59
Don't think they played too bad really. Think we were really missing some creativity out wide. For me tonight, Calvert-Lewin and Mirrales didn't do it but is still really pre-season with something at stake. Get 2 more wide attackers (not Gylfi for me) and it'll all work.

Agree2 Disagree1

27 Jul 2017 22:16:59
Agreed now I've seen a competitive game I really think we need a target man. Just offers something different if plan A isn't working. They sat back a lot and would have been useful to have someone to swing some crosses into.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2017 22:18:01
I thought Baines looked sharp tonight the Baines off old.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jul 2017 22:19:10
I think Baines was deliberately putting low crosses in because we've got no height up top.

Whether it's Sig or someone else, we need more quality from set pieces because the corners and free kicks were pretty dire.

Agree2 Disagree1

28 Jul 2017 11:12:50
Calvert Lewin was played out wide tonight, too wide for me. He is tall and decent in the air so should have been played up top, just in front of Rooney. Sandro looks like a player, Klaasen didn't make a big impression imo. Martina was awful, really awful. Hopefully just a bad day at the office!

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2017 22:05:18
Let's be honest, from top to bottom that was pretty disappointing. From us fans the atmosphere was awful, so flat, giving the game no edge. They will give us a far more hostile environment to play a game of football in. Sloppy at the back apart from the keeper who saved some potential embarrassment. Gave the ball awag cheaply from the back and midfield although in fairness to Gueye and Schnierdlin they were great at winning it back quickly. Up top. Useless. Imagine what Lukaku would have done to that lot. Rooney clearly has the brain and the work rate, I just hope a run of games gives him his sharpness back because the 3 or 4 moments when it was needed it alluded him. Nobody impressed on the flanks. Sandro tried hard, I hate to say this but he should of gone down, apart from that he looks like a bargain. The only player that looked ready for the season was Klassen.
That's the issue with these Europe qualifiers, we are not ready, if we were 100% ready we would burn out by March. So take that with a pinch of salt, but wow when Stoke turn up can we please this season as fans try and make some bloody noise? Not just for City, Liverpool, Arsenal (only games last season we had the place bouncing) but every home game. We the fans made that a pre season friendly as much as the players did. We (players included) need to be much better than that.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

27 Jul 2017 22:19:05
I thought keen was very good at the back, he won ever header and looked good, but williams looked poor, and martinaz didn't win a tackle or stop a cross coming in, but on the ball going forward did look good, klaasson was good when he was involved, Rooney I think was just trying to hard, mirrallis was total rubbish, headless chicken always looking to shoot from stupid angles and never looking for the better option, was worries me is the lack of speed up front, we seem to get caught all the time, another striker is a must .

Agree1 Disagree1

27 Jul 2017 21:10:10
Sandro, Davies and Lookman on. Give them a go now.
Kev, Klaasen and Calvert-Lewin off.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed025's Note - i would not take klaassen off kingo..

27 Jul 2017 21:19:30
He's here there and everywhere but with little end result. I think Davies may add that little bit extra last half hour. Not saying I don't like the players, just a different dimension. Not too many decent chances on goal at the minute.

It's clear to me why we are going after Sigurdsson (even if I don't necessarily agree) . His stats suggest he is a consistent high performer in the premier league, particularly from set pieces. Some posters have suggested these should be ignored, but I actually think the fact he is so prolific from set pieces is a big reason that RK and SW are so keen on him.

In addition to this, I think his relationship with Llorente last season (I think they combined for most goals last season) is why we are keen on both Siggy and a target man (Giroud) . I think this shows a clear transfer strategy towards being able to deliver higher productivity.

My question to Eds is this: do you believe these 2 signings to be linked? As in, if we miss out on Sigurdsson, do you think this will change the type of striker we are looking at? Or are we more likely to just move down the list of creator/ target man combo if we miss out on first choice (Jonathan Viera / Benteke for example) ?

Personally I think if we get Siggy then signing we definitely won't be after a smaller, quicker striker (Dembele, Gameiro or others that have been linked on Twitter) . However if we do miss out on him, then that could affect our targets as it would mean RK may not be able to implement his preferred playing style.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no, Koeman likes target men anyway.}

27 Jul 2017 16:34:49
So excited to watch the boys play tonight. Think it will be a cracking match.
Very happy with the signings so far, I think if we get 6th in the Premier league this year it will be a successful year. First year we have spent money freely, need to remember the teams above us have been doing this for years and are still doing it. So for us to get 6th will be a cracking result. We need to keep spending though. We need to get another striker who can score 15 goals plus next year. But most excited I have been for a new season in years. And transfer season isn't over yet!
Come on blues tonight.

Can't wait to watch the match tonight, time seems to be on slow motion, just hope the boys come away with a win, not expecting fantastic football as they are still getting used to each other, but a win with give them all a big big boost.

I think you've bought well, 6th doesn't sound ambitious enough to me. Arsenal and Liverpool look vulnerable to me.

Sanchez from bayern seems abetter investment than Sigurdsson., who will have little resale value down the line. Okay it is potential over known premier league record, but 50 mil is about having the best bargaining position more than the real value of the player. He can't be the only option available when you go beyond the 40m mark. surely Walsh has other irons in the fire.

27 Jul 2017 13:12:00
I will support any player that RK and SW want to recruit for Everton, but the rumours about them wanting James Collins just baffle me.
Do any of the regular posters here really think he'd be good for us?

Ed or Eds any sign of outgoings from the club? Namely Niaase, Garbutt and Rodriguez, no offense but it doesn't seem any of these 3 are in with a shout this season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - a few will be moving out NBTB with the likes of niasse and barkley top of that list, a lot will depend on who we bring in though mate..

27 Jul 2017 16:58:51
I was coming from the angle of squad numbers. They are the only players over 23 that have basically no chance of getting a chance in the first team this coming season.

I'd imagine squad numbers are getting scarce and their leaving the club may be needed to accomodate new players coming in. Squad seems to be filling up. I'd love to know exactly how many spaces we still have left to fill.

27 Jul 2017 13:52:57
Whats happened with Garbutt Ed, he was meant to be Baines replacement, went away last season to Oldham I think but injured, is he still out of action.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - im unsure about him degs, he was looking good at one stage and i know he has had some injuries but his progress seems to have stalled a bit mate..

27 Jul 2017 09:06:58
I was wondering if any of the Eds could please give us an update on Evertons striker targets (or if this even a priority at the moment) ?

I know we had previously been linked with the likes of Giroud and Benteke but based on recent comments by the managers of those respective clubs those players moving don't look likely.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed025's Note - the striker position is very important CT and i believe giroud is still the main target, other names are being bandied about but really only walsh and koeman know who they are so just throwing names out there is pointless mate..
